Project Mexico Missions Trip:

June 18 - 24, 2019

Holy Trinity is looking for volunteers to participate in the

Project Mexico mission trip this year. Deadline is March 1,

2019. Contact Joe Pavia for additional information - Phone: (317) 665-1956 or e-mail: [email protected]

Project Mexico is a multifaceted organization with three main goals. First of all, Project Mexico spends every summer building homes for impoverished families in Mexico without adequate shelter. Secondly, we provide a safe and healthy home for the boys of St. Innocent Orphanage who would otherwise not have one. And finally, we involve volunteers of all ages in participating in these ministries, allowing them to grow in their faith through works of mercy!

K-8 Orthodox School

Now in its eight year, Hagia Sophia Classical Academy (HSCA) is an Orthodox K-8 classical school located here in Indianapolis. The Academy prepares children to excel in a competitive world. High academic standards and Orthodox Christian values are the emphasis. Children develop their minds at peak capacity and learn life-long Christian values of honesty, patience, kindness, diligence, purpose and love of God. Student enrollment is now open for the 2019-2020 year. For information, contact Fr. David Wey at 317-627-2282.

Church School

On Sunday, February 17 Triodion begins. This allows us four weeks to get ready in mind and body for the Lenten fast.

Lent is a good time to check off requirements fo r the Di ckos Church Schoo l Award. Instructions are in the Education Wing.

We are also preparing the 1st - 6th grade students to sing Communion Hymns. Students will be singing the hymns on Sunday, March 10 & 31. They will also be singing for the Metropolitan's visit on March 17.

Festival – Open Meeting

Tuesday, February 19, 7pm

Library

Holy Trinity Cathedral hosts a magnificent festival each year for the greater community! How can we make it better for our visitors, our volunteers, and our Parish? Come to share your ideas about what works well and what we might improve for our festival in 2019.

Everyone who has not yet completed a 2019 Stewardship Commitment Card is encouraged to do so. Blank cards are available in the Founders' Walk following the Divine Services and online at

https://goo.gl/oLGnGf.

Large Liturgical Furniture

New large liturgical furniture is the last project identified in the Spring 2014 survey. Our goal is to raise the funds by the beginning of the Great Lent (March 11), ensuring their delivery before Easter (April 28). The General Assembly approved the $65,000 project. To date we have raised $45,915. This project will complete the enhancement of our magnificent Church. All glory to God!!

Save the Date for Trivia & Fun On Saturday, March 9, Philoptochos will host an evening of Trivia, fun and an opportunity to show what you know! All proceeds will help fund Philoptochos projects to feed the hungry.

Missions Breakfast

The first Missions Breakfast of 2019 will be offered on Sunday, March 3 after Divine Liturgy. The menu is French Toast Casserole, Eggs, Hash Browns, Sausage, Fruit, Cereal, Milk, and Juice. The cost is $7 per person at the door (kids under 5 eat free). Those thinking about going on a mission trip should save March 2 - 3 and May 18 - 19 for the set-up, serving, and cleanup of the Mission Breakfasts. Participation in the fundraisers qualifies Holy Trinity Cathedral Stewards to receive a subsidy, deferring the mission trip cost. Also if planning on going on a Missions trip, please contact P a u l a K o n e d a b y e m a i l ([email protected]) or phone (317) 910-8725 by March 1, 2019 for registration and qualification information.

Holy Trinity Lenten Psalms Reading Group

Each volunteer participating in this Lenten Psalms Reading Group is assigned to a Kathisma (a specific reading assignment of selected Psalms). He/she will read the designated Kathisma each day during the Great Lent. When each Kathisma is read each day by everyone, the entire Book of the Psalms is read by the group every day throughout Great Lent. Along with the Kathisma, each person will pray the Trisagion Prayers and pray for everyone in the group by name. These prayers are offered individually in the privacy of everyone's home. If interested in participating, please e-mail Presbytera Barbara Filipovich at [email protected] with your name, baptismal name, and email address. A minimum of 20 volunteers is needed to begin this group. Reading assignments will be emailed before Clean Monday (March 11). Deadline to sign up is Wednesday, March 6.

Why do Orthodox Christians Fast?

Fasting is a regular part of the lives of all Orthodox Christians—we fast on all Wednesdays and Fridays, and during four major seasons: The Nativity Fast, the Great Fast of Lent, the Apostles Fast, and the Dormition Fast. With so much time devoted to this spiritual discipline, we might ask “why do we fast?” The answer is that fasting is letting go of one thing, so that we may receive something even better.

We unburden our:

Schedules: we do not spend time in entertainments, parties and celebrations; we eat simple meals with less time spent in preparation

Bodies: we abstain from certain kinds of food; we also reduce the quantity of the food we eat

Budgets: we save money by not spending on entertainments and social engagements, and by purchasing simple, low-cost foods.

We receive in our:

Schedules: time for increased prayer & spiritual study—this focus during the Fast builds our relationship with God, allowing for undistracted focus on Him.

Bodies: self-control and a redirection of our desires—this focus during the Fast builds our relationship with our own selves; fasting foods are less likely to make us quick to anger and laziness, and the smaller quantities we eat is gives us a lightness of spirit as well as reminding us of our reliance on God.

Budgets: what we save by focusing on our spiritual life, and by eating simply, allows additional money for almsgiving—this focus during the Fast builds our relationship with others. The Great Fast is preceded by Judgment Sunday when Christ tells us that we will be judged by how we care for others in need as for Christ Himself.

There is a saying in baseball: practice never won a game, but nobody ever won a game without practice. We could correctly say that fasting never saved anyone, but nobody was ever saved without fasting—precisely because we need the blessings that come only through Fasting. We see the Fast is not simply about ‘giving something up;’ rather it is about emptying ourselves in order to be filled with the Grace of God Himself !
