Dear Parishioners and Visitors, We continue to hear from Jesus' Sermon on the Mount. Jesus sets the bar high for his disciples and all those who call themselves Christians. Danish Theologian Soren Kierkegaard once said: "Most people believe that the Christian Commandments are intentionally a little too severe, like setting a clock half an hour ahead to make sure of not being late in the morning". There are those who think that the Ten Commandments are outdated. Just think and say, which of the Ten Commandments you want to scrap from the list? Jesus did not find anything to be removed from Old Testament Laws. Jesus shows us how to go to the roots of the Commandments. Command-ments are for our good and without them all is darkness. It is not just a question of filling the checkboxes of rules and regulations but to live our lives according to the spirit of it, both externally and internally. In today's readings we are reminded that we have a choice, we can choose for God or not, for sin or not. In the Gospel Jesus challenges us not to live on the surface in a legal way, instead to live from the heart. Jesus was very critical of the religious practices of his time because many had prac-ticed the Law in the externals and abandoned the spirit of the Law. We can easily fall into the same trap. We can fulfill our religious obligations of go-ing to Sunday Mass and giving to charities. But if the rest of our life does-n't reflect our faith, then our religious observances do not mean much. Just fulfilling the external obligations is not enough. It must go deeper than that. When Jesus tells his disciples that their righteousness must surpass that of the Scribes and Pharisees, He is saying that there is something more important at stake than the letter of the Law. In other words, Jesus is trying to teach us the underlying purpose of each Commandment. This in-vites us to examine our religious observances.

God Bless you. Have a week filled with Grace.
