Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time (Cycle B) A Sunday Reflection Have you ever wondered how you can thank God for His many

benefits? In the First Letter to the Corinthians, St. Paul tells us how: “Whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do everything for the glory of God” (10:31). This is advice we should take to heart as we approach the beginning of Lent.

The gospel presents us with a great example of humility and trust. The leper knows Who he is addressing, but does not want to force himself on Jesus. “If you wish, you can make me clean” (Mk 1:40). In other words, “I know you have the power; but if You decide not cure me, I accept Your will.” This is a model for all our prayers; tell the Lord what we want in the knowledge that it is in His power to do it, but that He may decide to do otherwise; and we accept His will.

Lent, a gift from our loving and merciful God, is the perfect time to reflect on these things: whether we trust Him, whether we accept His will; whether we do all things for His glory. May this Lent bring us closer to the Lord day by day.

My sincere appreciation to the 61 families who have contributed to the ABCD campaign. If you have not yet done so, I invite you again to pledge $1 a day for a year. The Lord will reward you. God bless you!

¿Se han preguntado alguna vez cómo darle gracias a Dios por todos Sus beneficios? En la Primera Carta a los Corintios San Pablo nos dice cómo: “Ya coman o beban o hagan lo que sea, háganlo todo para gloria de Dios” (10,31). Es un consejo a tomar en serio al acercarnos al comienzo de la Cuaresma.

El evangelio nos presenta un gran ejemplo de humildad y confianza. El leproso sabe a Quién se dirige pero no quiere imponerse a Jesús: “Si quieres, puedes curarme” (Mc 1,40). En otras palabras, “sé que puedes; pero si decides no curarme, acepto Tu voluntad”. Este debe ser el modelo para toda oración, diciéndole al Señor lo que queremos, reconociendo Su poder para hacerlo y al mismo tiempo aceptando Su voluntad si decide no concederlo.

La Cuaresma es un regalo de nuestro Dios amoroso y misericordioso. Es el momento perfecto para reflexionar sobre lo anterior: si confiamos en Él, si aceptamos Su voluntad, si lo hacemos todo para Su gloria. Que esta Cuaresma nos acerque día a día más al Señor.

Mi más profunda gratitud a las 61 familias que han contribuido a la campaña del ABCD. Si aún no lo han hecho, los invito nuevamente a comprometerse con $1 diario por un año. El Señor se los pagará. Que Dios los bendiga.

ASH WEDNESDAY AND GOOD FRIDAY are days of fast for all Catholics between 18 and 59 years of age. One full meal and two smaller,

meatless meals are permitted. Abstinence is to be observed on all Fridays of Lent as well as Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.

Catholics 14 years and older are bound to abstain from meat.

What You Need to Know About Lent

EACH YEAR CATHOLICS (and many Christians) commemorate the season of Lent, a special time of preparation before the glorious celebration of Easter. Here are the basics of our Lenten journey toward Easter.

According to the norms established by the Council of Nicaea in 325 AD, Easter Sunday falls each year on the first Sunday following the first full moon of Spring. Easter Sunday is celebrated this year on April 4; counting 46 days back, we get Ash Wednesday, February 17.

Lent lasts 40 days in imitation of Jesus fasting in the desert, and ends on Holy Thursday. The six Sundays in Lent are not considered part of the official “Lenten fast”. Holy Thursday marks the official end of Lent and the beginning of the “Triduum” that culminates at the Easter Vigil.

The three pillars of Lent are prayer, fasting and almsgiving. Lent is a time to practice these essential spiritual practices and clean out our interior house.

Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fasting while all Fridays in Lent are days of abstinence from meat*.

Lo que debe saber sobre la Cuaresma

CADA AÑO LOS CATÓLICOS (y muchos cristianos) conmemoran la Cuaresma, un tiempo especial de preparación para la gloriosa celebración de la Pascua. Aquí les presentamos algunas cosas básicas sobre nuestro caminar de Cuaresma hacia la Pascua.

De acuerdo a las normas establecidas por el Concilio de Nicea en el año 325 dC, cada año la Pascua se celebra el primer domingo después de la primera luna llena de la Primavera. Este año la Pascua cae el 4 de abril. Si contamos atrás 46 días, llegamos al Miércoles de Ceniza, 17 de febrero.

La Cuaresma dura 40 días en imitación de los que Jesús ayunó en el desierto, y termina el Jueves Santo. Los seis domingos de Cuaresma no se consideran parte oficial del “ayuno cuaresmal”. El Jueves Santo da fin a la Cuaresma y marca el comienzo del “Triduo” que culmina con la Vigilia Pascual.

Los tres pilares de la Cuaresma son la oración, el ayuno y la limosna. Es el momento de retomar estas prácticas espirituales esenciales y limpiar nuestra casa interior.

El Miércoles de Ceniza y el Viernes Santo son días de ayuno, y todos los viernes de Cuaresma son días de abstinencia*.

Ash Wednesday this year is February 17. Due to the current pandemic, the Holy See has issued new instructions about the blessing and distribution of ashes. After the blessing and sprinkling of the ashes with holy water, the celebrant will pronounce the imposition formula once, instead of individually. After that, he will proceed to impose them on each person in the usual manner. Este año el Miércoles de Ceniza es el 17 de febrero. Debido a la actual pandemia, la Santa Sede ha modificado el rito de bendición y distribución de la ceniza. Luego de bendecirlas y asperjarlas con agua bendita, el celebrante pronunciará la fórmula de imposición una sola vez, en vez de hacerlo individualmente. Luego procederá a imponerlas a cada persona de la manera acostumbrada.

Schedule for Ash Wednesday: there will be Mass in English with imposition of ashes at 8 am and again at 5 pm in the church. Imposition of ashes outside of Mass will take place at 12 noon, in the church. A bilingual Mass with imposition of ashes will take place at 7 pm. Please sign up as for Sunday Mass. As part of our Lenten observance the parish will hold bilingual Stations of the Cross on the Fridays of Lent at 6:30 pm, in the plaza. Como parte de nuestra observancia cuaresmal la parroquia celebrará el Viacrucis bilingüe todos los viernes de Cuaresma a las 6:30 pm, en la plaza.

To observe the year dedicated to St. Joseph, we will start preparation for consecration to the saint on February 15, using the book “Consecration to St. Joseph” by Fr. Donald Calloway, available through the EWTN catalog. Consecration will take place on the feast day of St. Joseph, March 19. Wear a face mask and keep it on during Mass. After receiving Holy Communion, step to the side, lower your mask and consume the Host before returning to your pew using the side aisle.

Keep social distancing of approximately 6 feet between persons, except for people of the same household. And use hand sanitizer.
