ALLEN PARK, Mich. – Behind consecutive strikes

by Tommy Jones, Pete Weber and Scott Norton,

Billie Jean King’s New York City WTT KingPins

defeated the top qualifying team, Kevin Hart’s

Philadelphia Hitmen, 222-198, to win the PBA

League Carmen Salvino round at Thunderbowl

Lanes.

The second of five rounds of PBA League compe-

tition aired on ESPN.

With their win in the Salvino round, the KingPins

(John Szczerbinski, Jack Jurek, Jones, Weber and

Norton) earned 12 points toward the Elias Cup finals,

which will be held March 31 at Woodland Bowl in

Indianapolis. After two events, the KingPins lead

Jesse Williams’ BROOKLYN STyLES in the points

race, 24-20.

“This was a blast for me,” Weber, the KingPins’

franchise player, said. “There was no choice but to

have Scott (Norton) bowl anchor. He was the hottest

bowler in the building during the Detroit Winter

Swing. And I wanted John (Szczerbinski) to lead off

because he’s that good. He showed us where we

needed to throw the ball and that’s what we fed off

of.”

Szczerbinski is an experienced team competitor as

a Team USA member and a former collegiate All-

American at Wichita State.

In the semifinal match, Jurek, Jones, Weber and

Norton put together a string of four strikes which

helped the KingPins topple the hometown-favorite

Motown Muscle, 225-192.

In the opening match, Norton struck in the fifth

frame and three times in the 10th to lock up a 223-

191 win over Terrell Owens’ Dallas Strikers. The

Strikers, who finished eighth in the Salvino qualify-

ing round, earned their berth in the stepladder finals

when Rhino Page out-lasted a field of 11 in the Clash

eliminator, where each player threw one ball and the

lowest scoring player was eliminated until only one

player remained. Page nipped the Silver Lake Atom

Splitters’ Chris Barnes, 10-9, in the final round to win

the elimination event.

16-year-old Jake Rollins 290-770

In Youth Travel At Holiday BowlBy Vince Albrecht

OAKLAND, NJ - The Stan Niemiec youth travelers, led by 16-year-

old Jake Rollins, broke loose at Holiday Bowl for ten “600+” sets and

thirty-seven deuces. When the pins looked from their pin deck to see

Jake preparing to deliver that thunder ball of his, they wanted to find a

place to hide, but alas, they were rendered helpless when the talented

Rollins fired his ball down the lane. After a 212 opener, Jake, whose

Glen Rock team won the Bergen County Boys championship on

Saturday, zoned in from game two’s second frame through the finale’s

sixth frame, stringing seventeen strikes en route to games of 290-268 to

finish with 770, lifting his twenty-one game average to 244...yikes! His

Fair Lawn teammate Steven Plaszky added 204-200, but it wasn’t

enough to overtake Holiday I, which won five points with a 1002-2827

effort. Anchor Anastasia DeLeon powered her mates with 266-225: 678

and was assisted by Nick Cilento 222-204: 618, Graham Mulligan 206-

205 and Lilly Sigona 185.

In a key position week match-up, Bowler City II took over first place

by sweeping past Boonton. Southpaw Justin Garcia led the onslaught

with 234-220: 622 with ample support from Jonmikal Sepero 222-222:

612 and Kyle Schellberg 207; Boonton’s only deuce was Karl

Kattermann’s 203.

Bowler City I blitzed Bowler City IV with 983-2811 behind Rob

Gilbert, Jr 247: 686, Ryan Perez 247: 602, Eric Grabusnik 222 and

Vinny Santoro 216-203. BC III’s best came from Patrick Sucero 204,

Arielle Wallace 202 and ten-year-old Louis Ferrante 166.

Montvale opened with a stellar 1010 handicap score and went on to

take five points from Holiday II. The victors were buoyed by Katie

Didonato’s 224: 580, a season high, along with deuces from Matthew

Russell 216 and Kyle Ladewig 213. Holiday II registered six “200s”, but

couldn’t bridge the gap, dropping the finale by five pins. The quartet all

had a hand in the comeback effort: Kevin Macchia 243-214: 651,

Colette Malyack 234: 605, Joe Malyack 213: 600 and Frank Olandesi

214-202.

Bowler City IV earned seven points by comfortably surpassing aver-

age thanks to Nick Ferrante 214, Caitlyn Tombo 202, Greg Khan 201

and Nathan Tombo 199.

Bergen County Boys TournamentBy Vince Albrecht

HACKENSACK, NJ - Lyndhurst sophomore Jordan Lopez

refined his two-hand delivery, resulting in a record 300 game, 802

set in the morning session of the Bergen County Boys Tournament

at Bowler City. He became only the third bowler to register a per-

fect game in the tournament and the first since Ridgefield Park’s

Steve Fernandez in 2003. Lopez’ six-game 1427 is the highest since

1988 when Cliffside Park’s Mark Orofino posted 1434. The fresh

oil was advantageous to the players, many of whom rang up

impressive numbers early. Bergenfield freshman Nick Reyes’

twelfth delivery was a tad high in the pocket, leaving him with 299

and Glen Rock freshman Evan Strassberg strung the first ten before

settling for 289.

The afternoon three-game block proved to be more challenging

for the participants who needed to adjust to the drier lanes. When

all was said and done, Glen Rock captured the Group I-II title and

became the first small school to win the overall championship since

Queen of Peace in 2006, when they outdistanced Group III-IV win-

ner Hackensack, 6022-5866.

Snares Individual HonorsBy Vince Albrecht

HACKENSACK, NJ - Paramus Catholic finished third among the

eight teams advancing to the Baker Format quarterfinals and with

Holy Angels to reach the finals against upstart Westwood, the fifth

seed. The Cardinals shocked defending champion Ridgewood and

In the morning three-game block, Teaneck’s Dana Marie Laloo
