Since its debut in 1938, Thornton Wilder’s Our Town

has been embraced as an American classic, and this year The Heathland School decided to perform it as the annual school production. With constant rehearsing and an excellent play it was always bound to go well, and we had a full house both nights! Our Town is a thought provoking play and throughout rehearsals we all discovered how much we

under-appreciate life. Two of last year’s Sixth Formers and have gained work placements at Sky Television on the ‘Fast Forward’ programme, with Payam Edalat entering the ‘Entertainment’ department and Jasmin Hinds taking up her position within Sky News.

Payam feels that his work skills have gone from strength to strength since starting in 2011, adding ‘You take an active role in the department, not simply shadowing or watching how others do their job’.

Jasmin spoke highly of the benefits of entering a job at such a prestigious company. ‘ I’ve had an insight into how a news company operates, whilst meeting industry professionals who make the news their passion on a daily basis.’

Mrs Hallen will fly out to Tanzania this February to brave the freezing winter temperatures and climb the formidable Mount Kilimanjaro. In an attempt to set a Guinness World Record by getting 5 amputees to the summit, they will also raising money for the charity ‘Pilgrim Bandits’ who support injured servicemen.

Big Prizes are also up for grabs in the canteen this year. All students and teachers

who purchase items in the canteen receive ‘Healthy Eating’ points. The more nutritious the food, the more it is worth. For example, a salad will earn you 10 points, a bacon roll is just 1. And the big prizes are just that, BIG! The year before last a bicycle was awarded to the top boy and girl. Last year, £200 worth of sports vouchers. The top 3 prizes for 2011/2012 are just as exciting, see posters around school.

Nabeela Mulbocus also showed her amazing talent as a writer, by

being selected from amongst thousands of students to have her work printed in an anthology of poetry. The Poetry Matters 2011 competition was held by the Young Writers Association and invited pupils 11-18 to submit their work to be judged and if lucky, published. Nabeela (Y10), had her poem selected by the panel, and it appeared

in the collection ‘Across The Globe’, which celebrated writing inspired by different parts of the world.

Members of the School Council who are on the SNACK Committee

met with Mr. Shaw (Dining Hall Catering Manager) and Governors who form the Premises Committee. The students made constructive comments about the meals provided in the Dining Hall – paninis are clearly top of their list – and were given more information about the restrictions the Government has

placed on the food that can be offered to pupils.

On behalf of the Governors the Headmaster said he would follow up points made by SNACK Committee members with Harrisons Catering.

(Pupils who attended the meeting): Liam Gourlay 9TU, Omar Ibrahim 10AD, Krishna Bhangu 11HO, Samantar Nur 11TU, Hannah Farah 12JE, Gowthara Ravindran 12KE, Gurpreet Sachdeva 13BA.

Charity Week Piles Up the Pounds

Charity Week 2012 proved yet another success as it drew to a close at

the end of half term. Pupils saw the hall become a hub of lunchtime entertainment with the now legendary Strictly Come Bhangra competition – won by Mr Parfitt and Miss Thorne respectively. Equally thrilling were the pupil based competitions, Heathland’s Got Talent and So You Think You Can Dance whose champion Jamaal Jacobs performed an amazing routine at the end of the show. Events took place around school throughout the week,

with pupils aiming to beat last year’s total of 15,300.The annual event included MUFTI Day, which saw many pupils attempting to raise even more sponsorship money, with a variety of weird and wonderful fancy dress outfits. Importantly, many students kept in mind why we were all having so much fun. All proceeds from the week will be split between the three charities voted for by the school, Olympic Legacy Trust UK, Three Wings Trust and Hope For Children. A big Thank You to Mr Jolly for organising this fantastic event.

On Wednesday 11th January Year 9 had a real treat! They were invited to watch Take

Two’s production of Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare.

We had been studying the play and watched on as the story came to life in our school hall. Knowing the language and the plot made it easier to understand.

The famous love story was received with enthusiasm by the year 9 audience and the actors praised us for the respect we gave them during the performance. This was an amazing production enjoyed by everyone. Ayaan Hussein

Ever wondered how to get more involved with your favourite subjects? Ever wondered how to get top tips and advice or the low down on what you need to know? Then look no further than your friendly Sixth Form Subject Captains. Each Head of Department has nominated two students who really know their stuff to provide help and advice to the rest of the school. However, not only can they help you, they also want your help in return! If you have ideas for extra curricular events or activities you are interested in, then talk to the subject captains to help make it happen! To find out more, look for the photographs of the captains on display in each department, or identify the students by their purple badges.

Year 8 celebrated in style this winter, with a whopping 40 students achieving ‘Excellent’

Attitude to Learning grades in their last report. In recognition of their feat, Miss Legg accompanied some of the pupils to Hampton Court Palace, where they honed their skating skills on the Christmas Ice Rink, and enjoyed some festive cup cakes.

Year ten were also invited to take part in a special conservation/fashion cross over challenge. The aim of the workshop was to develop an understanding of small businesses, and how integral creativity, art and the environment are in this this. Pupils were split in small groups of 5 or 6, and given the task of creating a poster to advertise the forthcoming Gala concert. They were then assigned the difficult job of creating an outfit made entirely from materials that had been thrown away – to emphasise the importance of recycling.

This term, a selection of Year 10 students took part in a scheme called

Sky Lawyers, to learn about the complex justice system. During these six weeks, topics such as discrimination, false accusation and rights of the law were covered. The workshops helped

the students get a look at what they would be handling if they decided to become a lawyer. Just like the laws of human rights, animal rights and a country’s rights we also learned people’s rights, your rights and my rights. By Nabeela Mulbocus

Jessica Pearce and Nabeela Mulbocus from Year 10 represented the school in

January at the Jack Petchey Speak Out Challenge Regional Finals 2012. Both won their individual heats in November, when the Speak Out Challenge visited The Heathland School. The competition took place at Brentford School For Girls, where they competed against other students from around the borough. Miss Carter, who accompanied them on the trip noted that ‘both girls performed extremely well, they did the school proud!’.

In the Autumn Term, three Year 8 students became the first students in The Heathland School to successfully complete the Arts Award. Micha, Sadaf and Daniel created a portfolio focusing on their love of Music looking at their work as performers to their musical heroes Joshua Bell and Jimmy Page. As part of their portfolio, they performed to their friends as well passed on their skills to others, with Daniel showing off his ability as a Guitarist, and Micha and Sadaf demonstrating their keyboard skills. As a result the three students now have a QCF Level 1 Qualification. Well done!
