(NAPS)—Whether the holiday party isat your place or you’re just decking thehalls, you may have found it’s time toclean up baseboards and door trimaround the house. Baseboards, chair railsand door trim elements do take apounding over the years. If you’re looking for a way to

immediately improve interior aesthetics, trim replacement may be one of thequickest options to make a noticeableupgrade.

How To Do ItA good place to start is with baseboard

removal. An important tool in this effortis an oscillating multi-tool. With its range ofblades and cutting accessories, this tool canreach into cracks and crevices where otherpower tools just can’t. Bosch, a leading makerof oscillating tool blades, offers a completeline of plunge blades and half-moon cuttingblades. For example, the OSC118F bi-metal plunge

blade can cut nails or wood to remove longruns of baseboard, door casing or chair rail. The thin-profile metal blade can be wedgedbetween drywall and existing trim to makeclean removal of wood without ruining the

wall beneath. The blade cuts nails andseparates old baseboard from drywall withthe fast side-to-side oscillating motion.

Chair Rail and TrimThe process is the same for chair rail or

other types of trim that aren’t baseboard, except many times people want to save chairrail and reuse it. The material is oftenhardwood that incorporates an intricatedesign or a unique edge. In older homes,

hardwood trim may be impossible toreplace or replicate because its design isunique or rare, so saving it is crucial toproject success. The same is true for crownmolding.Additionally, baseboard or other trim

removal may be af fected by flooring—carpet, lino leum, tile or other material. That means scraping and materialremoval, sometimes at poor angles. TheOSC2FSC oscillating blade does a greatjob of getting underneath the material thatneeds to be removed and then channelingthe action to the tip to ensure efficienttransmission of power. Scraping away theflooring material around the baseboard is

a key part of a full-room renovation.If it’s time to update your home’s interior,

there’s no better place to start thanbaseboard and trim.Removing the dents, gouges and general

eyesore of decades-old molding can makeyour home sparkle during the holidays and allyear long. It’s easy to do with the right toolssuch as those from Bosch.

Learn More You can find more facts and tips online at

www.boschmultix.com or by calling 877-Bosch99.

Time To Replace Your Trim

Cutting baseboard and nails with anoscillating tool is easy and quick.

(NAPS)—Although tax seasonlaunched later than usual, taxpayerscan still look forward to good newsthis year. For many Americans, taxpreparation can be stressful andcostly, but filers may be able to havetheir taxes prepared at no cost, plusqualify for refunds and credits worththousands of dollars.

Now in its fifth year in a row,MyFreeTaxes.com provides free taxpreparation and filing assistance forqualified individuals, both online and inperson.

1.) File online for a faster refund. The IRS recommends taxpayers file

online with direct deposit to receive theirtax refunds faster. More than 80 percentof taxpayers filed electronically last year. On MyFreeTaxes.com, youcan file quickly online in less than an hour, plus receive chat andphone help from certified volunteer tax advisers.

2.) File your federal and state taxes free. Many paid tax preparers offer free federal returns or free e-file,

but then charge for the state return so aren’t really free. TheMyFreeTaxes Partnership offers two ways to file both federal andstate taxes for free with no state or federal tax preparation or filingfees. Taxpayers can file online at MyFreeTaxes.com if they earned$57,000 or less in 2012, or in person at a community-based taxpreparation site with IRS-certified volunteers if they earned $50,000or less. Visit MyFreeTaxes.com to find in-person filing locations inyour community.

3.) Get extra help if you need it.MyFreeTaxes.com also offers

accessibility assistance for taxpayers withdisabilities, phone assistance with taxsoftware questions by calling 855-My-Tx-Help, plus help finding an in-personfiling site in your community.

4.) Ensure you receive re funds and credits.MyFreeTaxes.com offers a handy

checklist so taxpayers can gather theright information, from W-2s to bankaccount numbers for direct deposit of arefund to Social Security numbers foreach member in the household. Plus, eligible taxpayers can qualify for

valuable tax credits like the Earned IncomeTax Credit and Child Tax Credit, whichcan be claimed for up to $5,891. One infive Americans are unaware they qualify

for the EITC and lose money they could be receiving in a refund.

5.) Consider a tax-time savings bond.In addition to saving money by not paying a paid tax preparer,

taxpayers can also consider using all or part of their tax refund topurchase Series 1 U.S. Savings Bonds for as little as $50 and up to$5,000—saving more money for a rainy day. The MyFreeTaxesPartnership is powered by the Walmart Foundation in cooperationwith United Way Worldwide, Goodwill Industries International andNational Disability Institute, with tax filing software provided byH&R Block®. The online and in-person tax preparation and filingser vices have helped 4.5 million individuals and families claim nearly$6 billion in tax credits and refunds since 2009. To learn more, visitwww.MyFreeTaxes.com or call 855-My-Tx-Help for moreinformation.

Five Tax Tips That Could Save You Money

Whether you are preparing your taxes onlineor in person, it’s important to have the

documents you need—such as W-2s, 1099sand last year’s return.

(NAPS)—If you’re like most Americans, you’ve lost somethingvaluable because of clutter, according to a recent Harris Interactivesurvey. The most common thing lost? Important documents and bills.

So that you don’t have to deal with such difficulties, here are 10 tipsto help you get organized:

Tip 10: Start small when starting to declutter. Pick one area or roomand sort through your stuff. Purge items no longer used and assign thekeepers a place.

Tip 9: Keep things orderly. Create zones for certain activities orcategories and store all related items in that zone.

Tip 8: Have a young family? Make it a game with your kids to getorganized. Create a treasure hunt and you may rediscover items oncethought to be lost.

Tip 7: Organization needs consistency. Talk to your significant otheror roommate about maintaining a united front on keeping thingsorganized.

Tip 6: Enlist help for larger organization efforts. Invite friends overto help clear out clutter; pay them with pizza and cold drinks for theirwork.

Tip 5: Donate duplicate or unwanted items to a charity that can thenuse your extras to support those in need.

Tip 4: Pick your battles. Start with what is manageable, like a closet, and work your way toward larger projects, such as the basement orgarage.

Tip 3: Create routines. Make it a habit to tackle a new area of thehome every month.

Tip 2: Put it away now. Done using something? Instead of lettingthings pile up, put them away immediately. You can have plenty ofplaces to put stuff when you get storage units, shelving and orga nizationkits from Gladiator GarageWorks. View them all at www.gladiator-garageworks.com.

Tip 1: Enjoy the spoils of victory. Cleaning and organizing is adaunting but rewarding task. Enjoy your accomplishment.

Ten Tips On Clearing Out Clutter

A neat and manageable garage, basement and lifecan start by your straightening a single shelf.

(NAPS)—A clever way to save energy can help youkeep your home heating money from going out thewindow. That’s because windows provide the biggestopenings between indoor air and the elementsoutside and the biggest opportunity for valuableenergy to escape, accounting for approximately 25to 50 percent of energy loss in a home.

Inefficient, single-pane windows are the biggest culprit for energyloss. Replacing old windows with double- or triple-pane insulatingglass is the one way to reduce energy costs—but no longer the onlychoice.

Storm windows have been around for generations, offering extraprotection against wind, rain, snow and ice. Until now, however, theydid little to protect against energy loss and were often difficult toinstall, with metal pins holding them in place. Today’s stormwindows are designed to dramatically reduce drafts, and energy-saving storm panels are typically installed in place of window screensas an added layer of insulation for existing windows. These days, they can also be installed in seconds from inside the house with aunique press-in-place style that’s quick, easy and safe, even on upper-level windows. They’re handy for renters, too.

The panels from ScreenIt Again.com are built to order andavailable in a variety of colors and sizes, so they fit the opening andthe style of the house. They also come with a heavy-duty cardboardsleeve for simple season storage year after year.

(NAPS)—You may be able to avoidgetting hot under the collar when you seeyour energy bills if you heed a few hintsthat offer a good way to focus yourhome improvement efforts where theycount. • Upgrade Your Attic Insulation. Heat

escaping through the attic may accountfor half your home’s heat loss. Make surethere’s at least 12” of insulation up there.Upgraded insulation can even helpsoundproof and weatherize your housefor optimum living quality.• Install Storm Windows and Doors.

This can cut heat loss at those sites inhalf. If you can, replace single-pane win-dows with double- or triple-pane win-dows.• Install an Automatic Setback or Programmable Thermostat that

can adjust the house’s temperature around your schedule. Whenyou’re away or asleep, program it to a cooler temperature. Whenyou’re around, raise it and you could save up to 10 percent of yourheating and cooling costs.• Check Your Furnace. Change filters frequently. Also clean air

registers, baseboard heaters and radiators as needed. Change forced-air heating system air filters monthly as well.• Take Advantage of Solar Energy. Simply opening the drapes on

sunny winter days can let sunshine in to naturally warm your home.

Similarly, closing them at night canreduce heat loss.• Use a Humidifier. If your furnace

doesn’t have a built-in humidifier, getone for frequently used areas. Theadditional moisture can make it feel asmuch as 8° warmer than the actual temperature.• Insulate the Concrete Slab That

Supports Your House. It’s estimatedthat 10 percent or more of a home’senergy loss can come from an uninsu-lated foundation. By adding theEnergyEdge system from CertainTeed, you can cut back on bills and help savethe environment. Featuring PVC railswith expanded polystyrene insulation,it can be applied by handy homeown-

ers or professional contractors to the exposed slab edge or other ex -posed foundation of the house. The system provides an R-10 thermal resistance value and meets

International Energy Conservation Code requirements. Plus, the TaxRelief, Unemployment Insurance Reauthorization and Job CreationAct entitles you to an energy tax credit of up to $500 on this kind ofenergy-efficient building material.Learn MoreFor further facts on foundation insulation products and sustain-

able efforts, visit www.certain teed.com or call (800) 233-8990.

Boost Energy Efficiency At Your House

(NAPS)—Recently, the Propane Education& Research Council (PERC) commissioned asurvey, “The 2012 Energy Habits, Awareness& Perceptions,” with Harris Interactive tosee how concerned Americans are withdomestic energy and greener living.

The survey found that Americans areincreasingly purchasing more green productsnow than before. In fact, approximately sixin 10 survey respondents said they havepurchased more environmentally friendlyproducts this year than five years ago.

With store shelves and online shoppingsites filled with a variety of eco-friendly andgreen products, consumers have a plethora ofchoices. And, according to the survey, families are especially benefiting, withAmerican households of more than threemore likely to purchase green products thanthose in households of two or fewer. Thesurvey also found that households withchildren indicated they are more likely tomake green purchasing decisions thanhouseholds without children.

As Americans are becoming greenerconsumers, they’re also adopting habits toreduce their carbon footprints. The surveyfound that most American households aretaking small steps in their everyday lives tobenefit the environment. Some of the thingsAmericans are doing to live greener are:

• Turning Off the Lights Roughly nine out of 10 Americans indicate

that they turn off the lights when they leave aroom.

• RecyclingJust over eight in 10 Americans recycle.

• Washing Clothes in Cold WaterApproximately three-fourths of Americans

wash clothes in cold water to conserve energy.

• Setting Thermostats ColderAbout seven in 10 Americans set their

thermostat colder in the winter.

• Taking Shorter ShowersMore than six out of 10 Americans take

shorter showers to conserve water. Not only are consumers making the switch

to greener living, many industries andbusinesses are, too. For example, leadinglandscape contractors are beginning to utilizealternative fuels such as propane. Propane-fueled commercial mowers emit nearly 50percent fewer greenhouse gas emissions than

gasoline, which can attract new customerslooking for green companies.

The school transportation industry is alsoembracing cleaner alternatives such as propaneautogas with significant results. In the state ofTexas alone, there are 2,078 propane autogasschool buses in operation.

Propane autogas-fueled buses produce 80percent fewer smog-forming hydrocarbonemissions compared with diesel, while alsolowering fuel costs.

As Americans and businesses continuemaking green purchasing decisions andadopting greener lifestyles, more remarkabletrends are sure to follow. Certainly, all of theseseemingly small efforts will make a bigdifference toward a healthier future.

Americans Get Serious About Going Green

(NAPSI)—This holiday season, youcan give yourself and your family thegift of a more secure home. Considerthis: Across the U.S., on average, morethan 400,000 burglaries will occurduring the holidays, according to theFBI.

What’s more, the holidays are among thebusiest times of the year for home invasions.Burglars are more likely to target homesbecause there may be high-priced gifts insidethat are unattended for a long time.

Fortunately, most break-ins can beprevented with a successful home securitystrategy that involves several layers ofprotection, from having a trusted person bringin mail and newspapers, to controlling lightingor installing home automation systems foradded security. To help you prep for a safe andsecure holiday season, Lutron Electronics, aleading manufacturer of lighting controls andhome control systems, offers these helpfulsecurity tips:

1. Connect lights to timers to give theillusion of activity

Dark, empty, single-family homes aretargeted more often than those with brightinteriors and exteriors or with people in closeproximity. To give the illusion of activityaround the house, many homeowners use lighttimers. Timers can easily be installed on lamps(most just plug in) and are an inexpensive, DIYsolution. Set two or three light timers ondifferent floors to turn on at varying timesaround dusk and off at bedtime.

2. Turn lights on from the car andalways enter a lit home

Wireless controls allow lights to beturned on with a remote, up to 100 feetaway from home—excellent for turninglights on from the car, so you don’t have toenter a dark home.

For example, the Maestro Wirelessdimmer with Pico wireless control is aninexpensive, remote solution that replacesany light switch. It can be installed in foyersand mudrooms or used with outdoor, hard-wired lights that line walkways anddriveways. This remote-control solution

ensures you’ll always enter a well-lit homefor added peace of mind.

3. Integrate security and homeautomation systems

Connect your home automation system toyour home security system to control lights, shades and temperature from your securitykeypad or mobile device—great for travelers.

For example, the RadioRA 2 total homecontrol system lets homeowners press abutton on the way out the door to ensure alllights are turned off and all window shadeshave been lowered. Likewise, if you areheading home in the dark, you can turn onyour lights and raise your shades through asmartphone application. An added benefit isyou can link it to a security system so if thealarm is tripped, the lights automatically goon to full bright or flash and shades areraised, to draw attention to the house.

If you take these home securityprecautions, your home is less likely to betargeted during the busy holiday season andyear round. For more information on lightingcontrol options that best fit your home andlifestyle, visit www.lutron.com.
