Check under the hood: Sort of. Most people dontknow the difference between filter- and disposal-based systems,so be sure to look at the bottom of the dishwasher, as thedifference is significant.
Filter-based systems, which use water filtration to separate foodparticles from the water washing your dishes, are generally quieterand more energy efficientbut they also require a periodic rinseof the filter.
Disposal systems, which use a blade to chop particles and
separate them from the water, do notrequire the same amount of maintenance,but can be louder and less efficient.

This phantom load, particularly from power adapters, computers and TVs, can account for asmuch as 10 percent of your homes energyconsumption. Place power stripsthroughout the house and shut downpower at the outlet versus on theappliance.
Also, make sure your appliances areoperating at maximum efficiency. Cleanyour dryers lint trap after every load andscrub it with an old toothbrush once amonth to get rid of the film left behind bydryer sheets. Clean your refrigerator coils,which can accumulate dust, at least once ayear. Pull the refrigerator away from thewall and unplug it. Then remove the coverpanel on the back to expose the coils anduse a long-handled brush or handheldvacuum to remove dust.3. Be water wise. According to the U.S.
Environmental Protection Agency, a family
of four in the United States uses about 400gallons of water daily70 percent ofwhich is for indoor use.
Your green action: Install low-flowplumbing fixtures. High-efficiency clothes
washers and dishwashers are ideal but theycan be expensive. An alternative isinstalling low-flow showerheads andfaucet aerators. A low-flow showerheadcan save a household up to 2,300 gallonsof water a year. A faucet aerator attachesto the end of a faucet and slows the waterflow, while adding air to maintain waterpressure. Americans move each year, with most moves occurring during the summer months. Withan average of 60 tasks to do to prepare, important decisions can slip through the cracks inthe moving crate.
To help, HGTV designer Lisa LaPorta and new-product journalist David Gregg, senioreditor, Behindthebuy.com, recommend a few tips. These experts say that moving doesnthave to be stressfulas long as you incorporate the right technology with the right designelements.
Both Gregg and LaPorta recommend getting the appointment to have cable television,phone and high-speed Internet services connected before the move. Having them installedon your arrival day means you can go online to determine room layouts and shop forfurniture, call out for pizza, and entertain the kids while unpacking. Theres a website,www.cablemover.com, that makes the process easy. And while youre there, youll discoveradditional tech and design tips.
Gregg suggests that moving is a great time for introducing new technologies to organizeand de-stress your living environment.
The average person has five to six remotes sitting around on the coffee table, he said.Moving is a perfect time to clear out the clutter and get down to one. Upgrading to auniversal remote is affordable and newer models are simple to both program and use.
Also, Gregg recommends hiding all your tech equipment be hind closed doors or inother, less-traveled rooms. Using a radio frequency extender, you can keep your DVDplayer and other electronics from view and still operate them from up to 100 feet away.
As a designer, LaPorta agrees. Because technology has become woven into so manydifferent facets of our lives, theres a lot to think about from both a design and technologystandpoint when setting up your new home, she says. In fact, designers have coined aterm for this phenomenon: techorating.
LaPorta urges movers to think about the electronics they own and what they will dowith them in their new homes.
For instance, its both costly and a hassle to move a 15-year-old, heavy, space-and-energy-hog TV set, she says. Consider purchasing a space-saving and de sign-friendly,slim new ENERGY STARrated TV. It can put as much as $58 per year back in yourwallet while cutting your carbon footprint.
