JOEL KARSTEN - PRESIDENTDAVID P. WEISS - FIRST VICE-PRESIDENT CHRISTOPHER MICHALAK - SECOND VICE-PRESIDENT GORDON D. BUSH - TREASURER • DANIEL D. FUSZ - SECRETARY

Can you guess what private club did this in the last six months? Hosted events featuring an impressive lineup of prominent sports figures including Coach Jeff Fischer and running back Steven Jackson from the Rams, Cardinals Manager Mike Matheny and General Manager John Mozeliak, 1968 Masters winner Bob Goalby, SLU coaches Jim Crews and Mike McGinty, the premier sportscaster in America Joe Buck, Major League Baseball Players Matt Holiday and Max Scherzer, and soccer legend Mia Ham… That’s correct! Your Club, the Missouri Athletic Club.

We all enjoy watching, listening and talking sports at our Club. Fellow members, and sports fans around this city, and nation, are watching to see just what we have lined up next. Our platform is a large one when it comes to sports programs in this city, state and nation. Local media outlets like KMOX, KFNS, TV outlets like Channel 2, 4 and 5 all have recently done stories from our Clubhouse. Cardinal broadcaster and fellow MAC member Dan McLaughlin recently did an hour-long, commercial-free radio show on the MAC Hermann Trophy Awards, and our staff and Board members were able to share stories of their daily experiences at the Club. Also, Dan helped put together a TV show on Fox Sports Midwest recapping the awards presentation, and produced the promotional video for the MAC Gala.

“Athletics” is our Club’s middle name, not only because we do

an excellent job of hosting sports banquets, but also because of the wide array of athletics, fitness and opportunities sitting in front of us, as members, on a daily basis. Daily group emails go out that talk about who is playing pickup basketball, squash, racquetball, tennis and handball. Or, who is meeting for a fitness class or workout with a fellow member, followed by a cold beverage and dinner afterwards... This is camaraderie in action at our Club.

Through the first four months of our fiscal year 2013, the MAC continues to benefit from you, the members, choosing to spend your hard-earned money at our Club. One number that I like to keep a close eye on is Departmental Revenue per member. This calculation is a simple one: You divide departmental revenue by current number of members. In fiscal year 2012, this was up 11 percent vs. the prior year. In the first four months of FY 2013, it is up eight percent. In the words of Past President Scott Engelbrecht, you the members are thinking of the “MAC FIRST.” You are booking banquets, company meetings, and hotel rooms for yourself and out of town guests. The staff enjoys hearing the positive feedback from your experiences.

While members continue to use the Club more often, let me also draw your attention to an important subject that needs improvement. In fiscal year 2012, our member headcount was down five percent, and in the first four quarters of fiscal year 2013, the member head count is down three percent. So please continue to bring your guests to the MAC so they can see first hand the benefits of the MAC membership. It is always easier to “show” than just “tell” them. If you are already enjoying reduced dues by being a Platinum

Partner, congratulations and thank you! Remember you can have two new friends or business associates join at the same time, and they BOTH receive the Platinum savings of $1,200 a year!

Exciting additions are coming to the West Clubhouse, which, in my opinion, is a gold mine when it comes to the MAC membership package. Your comments and suggestions were heard loud and clear by the Board and Management in the recent survey results. After all, 70 percent of our members live within five miles of West, and we believe when everyone in your home uses the family membership, your membership value is greatly increased. Upgrades are planned for the Stan Musical Grill area. Our fitness equipment will be second to none, come March, when the new equipment, and fitness area, get a much needed upgrade. The new pool furniture and additions around the pool area will be ready for use by the start of the 2013 pool season. A strategic plan is in the works to create a better bar setting at West, so that your first choice for business meetings and couples dining in the West County area will clearly be your Club.

I want to personally thank all the members that stepped up to support the Club with their prepayment of dues. All together, $405,000 of dues and capital fee prepayments were collected. These funds are extremely beneficial during this time of the year when our real estate and personal property taxes at both locations are due.

In previous columns, I asked you to consider running for the Board. The Club election is in May, but the deadline for entering the race is fast approaching. If you are considering running, please contact Linda Van de Riet (314-539-4448 or [email protected]), in the Membership Office, in February. For those that have the time, dedication and passion to serve our Club, it is a truly rewarding experience.

Stay connected to your Club, where camaraderie is experienced and relationships forged.

Celebrate Valentine’s Day at the MAC

8 FEBRUARY 2013

Love is in the air at the MAC. Valentine’s Day means many things to many different people. For some, it is a special holiday meant to shower their significant other with gifts and love, while others like to keep it more low-key and relaxing. No matter what your celebration style is, the MAC will make your day a special one for you, and your sweetheart. Check out your guide to a MAC Valentine’s Day.

Valentine’s Ball Instead of spending your Valentine’s Day at an overcrowded and overpriced restaurant, treat your special someone to an evening of elegance at the MAC Valentine’s Ball on Saturday, Feb. 9. The beautiful Missouri Room will serve as the backdrop for this intimate evening. You and your sweetheart will feast on a delicious three-course dinner and then dance the night away to music by the Ambassadors of Swing. Call 314-539-4470 for reservations. This year, the Dance Club is pairing with the Charitable Society for Children for their annual check presentation. At the Valentine’s Ball, the Charitable Society for Children will present the checks to the three charities from 2012: Southside Early Childhood Center, Walker Scottish Rite Clinic and Our Little Haven. The charities selected for 2013, Boys Hope Girls Hope, College Bound and Voices for Children, will also be recognized. All Charitable Society for Children members and contributors are invited to attend. Dining Make it simple and treat your valentine to a romantic evening at the Club. Both clubhouses are offering special dinner menus to celebrate the amorous holiday. For reservations in the Jack Buck Grill or Rendezvous Room, call 314-539-4417. For reservations in the Dining Room at West, call 314-539-4441.

FEBRUARY 2013 11

From the General Manager’s DeskWally Smith

Dear MAC Members: Each month I start working on this “Manager Update” about one hour prior to the absolute, no more time, cut-off deadline for the Cherry Diamond publication. It’s not that I like pressure, but I’m composing this two weeks prior to you getting it, so dealing with that gap is always interesting, and causes pause. Case in point, next week we have a huge event coming up (The Gala) that we are all really working hard on. It has not happened yet, but as you read this, it did and is actually history. We are excited about it at this point. As we prepare, we hope that it was awesome and that you all enjoyed it. Time travel type stuff - Wow! Speaking of time, my one-year anniversary with the MAC is two weeks from today, but as you read this, it has already happened, too. I’ve enjoyed being introduced as the New Manager, but I guess all good things must end. After a full year, and having been through the entire cycle once, my rookie status is gone, and it’s time for full speed ahead. So as we roll into February, every new day is no longer a total mystery. I’ve been to boxing night, seen the elections, experienced opening day with the Cards, Rams and Blues, experienced the Jack Buck Sports Awards, the MAC Hermann Trophy presentation and

Good Fellowship Day, to name just a few. The MAC rocks and I’m so pleased to be here with you in St Louis. A quick look back and recap, then a fast-forward to today, will bring us all back on the same page. Upon my arrival, the welcome and expectations were beyond amazing. I spent my first 30 days finding my way around the buildings, and meeting as many staff, members, vendors and people as possible. The next 30 focused on who was doing what. The following 30 was spent asking “Why?” and challenging past practices and assumptions. Then we got into our bucket mode, and began developing strategies to turn our membership recruitment efforts positive, to fill our hotel rooms and to get our banquet areas cooking. Several new staff members were recruited, budgets were developed and we were off and running. I love this stuff!! All in all, we had a very solid 2012 finishing December with a positive month in membership growth, and great business in our rooms and banquet areas. Thank you all, so very much, for introducing your friends to the MAC, for using our rooms when the opportunity arises, and for all your holiday parties and ongoing banquet business; 2013 is off to a very solid start as well, so take care of yourself and find a fitness

class, trainer or jump in the pool for a good workout. Next up, we have a number of fun Capital project in the works. I’m happy to report the Gala raised well over $100,000 (pure speculation at this point), and we are putting that money right back into the Club, for your increased enjoyment. Look for the all-new Natulas circuit this March, and all new pool furniture in May, both at West. We are also studying the “clubby” aspects of our West dining experience, which I’m sure will turn up some interesting ideas and initiatives. Our Downtown Clubhouse is not forgotten as we prepare to use some of the money generated, in addition to funds from the Preservation Foundation, to continue working on our life safety improvements, and tackle some deferred maintenance projects on roofs, and the lighting well. The MAC is on the move and the Platinum Partnership membership category is absolutely the best value in the entire universe. Let us help you take advantage, as you help us with the mission. Here is to year number two and tons of fun at The MAC. See you at the Club. ~Wally

JUST IN TIME FOR YOURNEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION…

Page 13: February 2013 issue of the Cherry Diamond

FEBRUARY 2013 13

Most New Year’s resolutions are abandoned by mid February. Here are 10 reasons to stay motivated and keep your resolution to get fit:

• Obesity rates have doubled over the past 30 years. According to the World Health Organization, globally 1.4 billion people are overweight and 500 million obese. By 2030, an estimated 50-60 percent of the population are on target to be classified as obese.

• The annual cost of obesity related illnesses in the U.S. is estimated at $190 billion (nearly 21 percent of the country’s annual medical spending.)

• The American Diabetes Association estimates that the national cost of diagnosed diabetes is currently $174 billion.

• A staggering 53.1 million people are projected to be diabetic by 2025.• Individuals who exercise regularly earn an average of 9 percent higher pay.• Women who consume 30 grams of fiber per day cut their breast cancer risk by 50 percent.• Exercise releases dopamine into the body, creating a natural euphoria that has been shown to decrease anxiety, stress and depression.

• Aerobic exercise has been shown to increase neurogenesis (generation of new neutrons) within the hippocampus. This is the part of the brain that forms memories and processes emotion. By engaging in regular aerobic activity, the memory center in the brain can be increased in size up to 50 percent. Exercise also allows easier processing of emotions.

• Poor nutrition has been shown to increase the risk of most cancers.• People living a sedentary lifestyle have a higher risk of suicide, divorce and addiction.

FOR THE LOVE OF THE GAMEMAC Tennis is an Integral Part of the Meissner Family

Bud and Nina Meissner have been members of the Club since 1947. Both are active tennis players, playing twice a week at the West Clubhouse. Bud, 94, learned to play tennis by taking secret lessons, before work, to catch up his skills to those of his wife Nina, 92. “She grew up with a tennis court at her home. I had to take lessons in secret to catch up to her.” When asked why he took up tennis, Bud joked, “I got married, that’s why.” Nina is a long-time athlete and tennis was something that she really enjoyed. To surprise her, Bud learned how to play at a competitive level. It seems the lessons paid off for Bud. While the two seldom keep score, Nina joked that Bud, “Wins all the time.” Both Bud and Nina are athletic, but the two play tennis to be active, support their camaraderie with each other, stay fit and keep mentally acuity. As Nina put it, “If you don’t use it, you lose it.” She also stays active by swimming and walking. Tennis seems to be a big part of the Meissner’s lives. Well into their 50’s, the two would spend several weeks in the winter time at John Gardiner Tennis Ranch in Sedona, Ariz. The two have been playing tennis at the MAC for several decades and have no plans to stop anytime soon.

On Jan. 11, 1993, University of North Carolina star Mia Hamm visited the Missouri Athletic Club to receive the Collegiate Soccer Player of the Year Award. Twenty years to the day of her first visit to the MAC, Mia returned the Club as the featured speaker of the annual MAC Hermann Trophy banquet. A record crowd of more than 500 people filled the Missouri Room, and spilled into the Eads Room, to see a soccer legend, and to watch a couple of rising young stars receive college soccer’s top individual honor. The event began with a press conference in the Art Lounge, where Bill McDermott introduced the finalists and announced the winners. Junior midfielder Crystal Dunn from the University of North Carolina and junior forward Patrick Mullins from the University of Maryland captured the 2012 MAC Hermann Trophy, presented to the best female and male players in NCAA Division I soccer. Dunn (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) is the fifth player from UNC to win the award. She played a key role in helping Carolina capture their 22nd national championship, in school history. The three-year starter earned NSCAA First Team All-American honors and was named the ACC Defensive Player of the Year. The first runner-up was Penn State senior midfielder Christine Nairn (Arnold, Md.) followed by Virginia senior forward Caroline Miller (Rockville, Md.). Mullins (New Orleans) led Maryland’s high-scoring attack with 17 goals and 10 assists. He tallied seven game-winners to lead the Terrapins to the best winning percentage in the country (20-1-3). Mullins is the second player in Maryland history to win the MAC Hermann Trophy. Jason Garey received the crystal soccer ball trophy in 2005. The first runner-up was Notre Dame forward Ryan Finley (Lumberton, N.J.) followed by Creighton senior midfielder Jose Gomez (Santa Ana, Calif.). UMB Bank sponsored the Missouri High School Soccer State championship teams that were recognized during the banquet. A broadcast of the awards presentation aired on Fox Sports Midwest. Hall O

f Fame

On Friday, March 1, some of the Missouri Athletic Club’s most distinguished athletic figures will be inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame. A dinner will be held in their honor in the Missouri Room. The Hall of Fame Committee reviewed nominations from MAC members and recently selected the 2013 class of inductees. Bob Gronemeyer is being inducted for handball. Gronemeyer competed in the sport over three decades and won several doubles championships. Tom O’Toole Jr. is entering the Hall of Fame for golf. The United States Golf Association Vice President has been instrumental in growing the sport at the Club. Tom O’Toole Sr. is entering the Hall for Distinguished Service. He played a key role in the acquisition of the West Clubhouse while serving on the Board. The induction of the O’Toole’s will mark the first time that a father and son have entered the MAC Hall of Fame. Brian Rodgers will enter the MAC Hall for basketball. He has been a key member on the MAC traveling team and has been on several March Madness championship teams. An outstanding 3-point shooter, Rodgers has received the Bill

Daake Award in recognition of outstanding sportsmanship. D. Scot Hunsaker will receive the “Dan Barks Award.” Named for the long-time MAC Athletic Director, the award honors an individual who participated in sports in the Club as a child and has gone on to make a mark on athletics as an adult. Hunsaker is the president of Counsilman-Hunsaker where he has been involved with the planning and design of more than 850 pools around the world, including at the Olympic Games. The MAC Athletic Hall of Fame was established in 1993 to honor those members of the Club who distinguished themselves in the field or in the development of athletics at the Club. Portraits of each Hall of Famer are on display in the Sportsman’s Club on the Fourth Floor.

Club members who ate lunch at MAC West, with any frequency, were likely to run into a friendly, famous face. Stan Musial ate lunch in the restaurant, named after himself, almost every day of the week. He even had his own booth commemorating where he liked to sit, and there is a plaque commem-orating his favorite dining spot. Stan’s engaging personality made him a hit with staff and members, espe-cially the children of MAC members. “He was great with the kids,” said MAC West Manager Darrin Harnetiaux. “He always had a kind word and would ask how they were hitting. He was extremely patient and giving of his time.”The staff also formed a strong bond with Stan. His usual server was Debbie Burke. “We were engaged,” joked Debbie. “We were together for 16 years and I have a ring! This past summer he gave me ring that said ‘I Love Stan.’ Stan loved to entertain with his harmonica playing. On Debbie’s 45th birthday, he played her the harmonica, signed it and gave it to her. “It is one of my most prized possessions,” Debbie said.

factories caused air pollution so bad that street lights sometimes stayed on all day, to the corporate headquarters of five major, modern producers of coal, the role of coal in St. Louis makes an absorbing story. That story will be told, and illustrated, when Steve Mahfood, who served 40-years an innovator and leader in the environmental, energy and natural resource fields, speaks

to the Forever Young Club. Steve, who served eight years as director of the Missouri Department of Natural Resourc-es and now advises on natural resource and carbon management issues, enjoys sharing his study of the “Role of Coal” in St. Louis. Join us at the West Clubhouse at noon on Friday, Feb. 15. Call Brittney Barton at 314-539-4490, and let her know you’re coming!

OUR MISSION:College Bound provides promising students from under-resourced backgrounds with the academic enrichment, social supports and life skills needed to succeed in college and careers.

FACTS:100% of our first four graduating high school classes earned admission to four-year colleges or universities; 93% re-enrolled for their sophomore year.

College Bound is the only program in the St. Louis region with a year-round curriculum that includes career exposure, community engagement, test preparation and academic enrichment so that students not only get to college, they graduate from college.

College Bound was recently touted in a St. Louis Post-Dispatch editorial introducing the Social Impact 100, an index designed in partnership with Duke University’s Center for Strategic Philanthropy that identifies organizations shown to have evidence of impact. Along with three local charities, College Bound has been recognized as “good bets for your contribution dollars because they are nonprofits that have demonstrated results and the potential to continue to reach more people with the work they do.”

COLLEGE BOUND HIGH SCHOOL PROGRAMS:GET YOUR PREP ON

Get Your Prep On is a yearlong pre-collegiate outreach program that targets 9th grade students and families to provide information and resources about the benefits of higher education. Along with information this program provides step-by-step instructions on how to plan, prepare, pay for and pursue a college education.

MAKING THE GRADEMaking the Grade is a comprehensive academic enrichment program consisting of courses in math, language arts, weekly tutoring, AP study groups and skill-building workshops. The goal of Making the Grade is to give students the academic foundation to succeed in college level coursework at selective four-year institutions.

CULTURE, CHARACTER, CAPACITYCulture, Character, Capacity is a wrap-around program that provides students with exposure to cultural events, community service and an ongoing ‘bank account’ of financial, social service and mentoring resources. The goal of the 3C’s are to provide students with the cultural capital to succeed in diverse higher education settings, to experience the power of service to others, and to mitigate the effects of social, financial and psychological hardship that disrupt students on their path to college success.

ADMISSION ACCOMPLISHEDAdmission Accomplished is a college access program at the heart of which closely-knit cohort groups, theories of action that focus on college completion, guidance from professional counselors, a network of supportive relationships and tools to help students create high quality applications to four-year colleges. The goal of Admission Accomplished is to prepare students for selective colleges that closely match their interests, aptitude and financial resources.

COMPLETE UComplete U begins in the second semester of 12th grade and remains active in students’ lives until they graduate from college. In the high school phase, students prepare for the emotional and psychological challenges of transition; they participate in a financial literacy program, and learn the hidden rules of classroom etiquette and residential life from experienced college advisors. After students matriculate to college, they receive a broad safety net of human and financial resources. The goal of Complete U is to ensure that College Bound students who are admitted to college, graduate from college, and can go on to enjoy the full benefits of living in a community and contributing to a vital and educated workforce.

MAC Women of DistinctionLuncheon

Come and celebrate the 25th anniversary of women members at the Missouri Athletic Club. The second Women of Distinction Luncheon will feature one of the first female members,

Jackie Joyner-Kersee, as the keynote speaker. For Sponsorship, contact Katie Maurer at 314-539-4402.

Friday, April 19, 2013 at the Downtown Clubhouse11:30 a.m. – Reception (Cash/Signature Bar)

Noon - Luncheon 12:30 p.m. - Program

In 1988, by an overwhelming majority, members of the Missouri Athletic Club voted to allow women to join the then-85-year-old institution. On Sept. 15, 1988, the Board of Governors certified a vote count, 2,768 to 835 (a 77 percent majority), to amend the By-laws and allow female members to join the Club. Then-president William J. Conway wrote the following in his Cherry Diamond column: “Thanks to all of you who exercised your right to vote. With almost 80 percent of your voting, this was a truly remarkable response to this important issue… The vote results are a clear signal from the membership, and I would first like to commend them for making this decision, especially in light of recent U.S. Supreme Court action. The Board must now go to work and adopt new By-Laws that will establish membership guidelines for the wives and daughters of members, widows of former members and female applicants.” Currently, there are two female Board Members,

Mary Frontczak and Judith Hanses, and it is the first time two female Board members have served in the same class. All together, there have been five females who have served on the Board of Governors. The Women’s Initiative Committee was established in 2009 as an avenue to promote the progress of the MAC in regard to women, and to help recruit female members. The Women’s Initiative Committee is coordinating the second Women of Distinction luncheon, on Friday, April 19, at the Downtown Clubhouse. One of the first female members, Jackie Joyner-Kersee, will be the keynote speaker. Because of the high level of interest for the first Women of Distinction luncheon, early reservations are advised for this event. Call 314-539-4470 to make reservations. The Club will also honor women at Club-sponsored events throughout 2013 to commemorate this historic anniversary. Come and be a part of this year’s celebrations at the Missouri Athletic Club!

Run for the Board The Missouri Athletic Club Nominating Committee is seeking 10 qualified candidates to run for the 2013 Club election. Don’t miss this rewarding chance to give back to the Club. If you are interested in running, please contact Linda Van de Riet at 314-539-4448 or [email protected]. Nomination packets, complete with a photo, letter of intent and biography are due by 5 p.m. on Tuesday, March 12, 2013. After receiving all applications, the Nominating Committee will narrow the field of candidates down to 10. These 10 people will appear on the ballot for the Club election on Thursday, May 2. The top five election winners will be announced at 8 p.m. on May 2, in the Missouri Room,V and will serve a three-year term on the Board. Not only is it a way to give back to the Club, but the experience is extremely rewarding. Being a Governor is fun! You get to attend and participate in many Club events. You will also instantaneously make 14 new friends, and meet 10 other new individuals in the two years to follow. Those who serve on the Board are extremely dedicated, hardworking individuals. In other words, they are great people to know. Running for the Board is also a great way to connect with other non-Board Missouri Athletic Club members. You will certainly gain notoriety within the Club, whether or not you win. In fact, running for the Board is half the fun! You will walk away having gained much more out of your membership. Between dinners and other special events, the candidates develop a deep camaraderie that few ever forget. Whether you decide to run for the Board or not, make plans now to be at the Downtown Clubhouse on Election Day, May 2. Experience all of the excitement first hand with a walk through the famed MAC gauntlet.

1948 – The National Water Polo spotlight shone directly on St. Louis, and the MAC, when the U.S. Olympic Committee decided to hold tryouts in St. Louis. The Club’s team was featured in a special story in Newsweek magazine and a photo showed Harry Queenson, Bob Unger ad Jim Quinlivan in action in the MAC pool. 1952 – More than 500 MAC members and their guests helped swell the Golden Gloves final’s night crowd at the Kiel Arena to over 16,000, setting a new record in Gloves attendance. Prior to the final bouts, held Friday evening, Feb. 15, about 100 of the MAC fans

gathered at the Club for an excellent dinner in the Crystal Room. 1959 – MAC followers of the Hawks saluted the nation’s top professional basketball team at the regular buffet dinner in the main dining room on Feb. 12. The addition of the basketball crowd swelled the weekly dinner to capacity and provided a worthy prelude to the Hawks’ victory over the New York Knickerboxers later in the evening. 1987 – The MAC honored St. Louis’ citizen #1, August ‘Gussie’ Busch, Jr. with the Jack Buck Award. In 1953, Busch single-handedly convinced the Anheuser-Busch board of directors to purchase the St. Louis Cardinals, and saved it for the city of St. Louis. At the time of purchase, he vowed to bring a championship team to St. Louis, “come hell or high water” before he died. And in 1964, ’67, ’82, ’06 and ’11, he did just that. Gussie Busch was always known as a man of his word. It’s difficult to say what St. Louis would be like without Mr. Busch’s contributions. Who can imagine St. Louis without the St. Louis Cardinals? Through some of the city’s darkest days when people were giving St. Louis up for dead, the team was a constant source of civic pride. When Mr. Busch kept his promise to bring a championship team to the city, he did more than just win “the big game.” And no St. Louisan, Cardinal fan or not, can ever forget it.
