Secretariat was one of the greatest Thoroughbreds of all time. His heart was over 2.5 times larger than normal. It was his gift, enabling him to exceed all racing expectations and setting race records that still stand today.

Secretariat also had heart. He had the right attitude. He gave all of himself in his racing and in life. This is what endears us to these animal legends. Our hearts to their hearts. From horses, to our dogs, cats, birds, even little hamsters … we develop a bond through our hearts for our non-human friends.

Even when they have heart and give it their all, we have to remember to care for their physical heart as well as their spiritual heart. Structurally, our pets' hearts can develop disease, often very similar to the heart diseases of humans. Issues that contribute to heart disease can include obesity, lack of exercise, dental disease – a key factor in congestive heart failure in dogs and renal disease in cats. Nutritional deficiencies are also contributors to heart disease.

Congestive heart failure is common in older dogs, as a result of valve disease from recurrent injury or infection from bacteria in the blood. These bacteria get in via gum disease and dental infection. Our pets’ lives are shortened by up to two years from the effects of dental disease. The heart is the main target.

Strokes are not common in dogs and cats, but can occur. Cats develop showering blood clots when they have cardiomyopathy, a disease of the heart muscle. Most often there are no signs until the heart is failing and the cat has difficulty breathing or has a paralyzing clot.

We can think of all the bad things that can happen to our pet’s heart, but there are many good things that can happen! • Exercise and play are always fun for us and our pets. Let’s be sure to get some of this together every day! • Omega 3 Fatty Acids are beneficial for heart health and function.• Proper nutrition with good quality pet foods. Feed the right amount to maintain ideal body weight.• Proper dental maintenance with full cleaning and assessment as indicated. This can ONLY be done under anaesthesia to reach all areas of

the mouth, above and below the gumline. • Annual health examinations to ensure that hearts are beating beautifully. We can all agree that our pets’ lives are far too short.

Let’s work together to stretch those lives to their maximum happy, healthy potential by keeping them healthy. We can do it if we put our hearts into it!

More information can be found at www.breadnervet.com.

Tiger Lily Events and Sidney Meet Up Network of Women in Business invite you to their upcoming fundraiser event, Sea of Love Sip & Bid, a benefit for the Shaw Ocean Discovery Centre. The Centre, a not-for-profit, is recognized as the award-winning Aquarium of the Salish Sea and a leader in environmental education.

The event will be held February 28th from 6 to 9 p.m. at the beautiful aquarium. This will be an evening of sipping local wine from Muse Winery and micro brewery beer from Vancouver Island Brewery while bidding on local art pieces in a silent and live art auction. Artists include: Craig Arthur Benson, Taryn Brown, Jim Gilbert, Graham Giles, Jonathan Gleed, Suzanne Heron, Colette Hopkins, Pauline Olesen, Chris Paul, Wendy Picken, Wendy Pierson, Judy Redfern, Monica Reekie,

Sea of Love Sip & Bid: Supporting Shaw Ocean Discovery Centre

Helen Stewart, Grant Warrington and Romaine Windley. The evening will also include delightful music, tempting appetizers,

wine tastings provided by Muse Winery and beer tastings by Vancouver Island Brewery, a no-host bar featuring the wine and beer from the tastings and the opportunity to network and greet people from the community.

There will not only be an art auction, but also a silent auction showcasing products and services from many local businesses and people: Sea Cider Farm & Cider House, Cabin 12, Bastion Management Ltd, Thrifty Foods, Pharmasave, Platinum Floral Designs, Salish Fusion Knitwear, Waterlily Shoes, Pebbles at Mineral World, Shaw Ocean Discovery Centre and much more. Christmas tree ornaments from the

Sidney Meet Up’s tree they decorated at the Mary Winspear’s Christmas Tree Festival will be included in the auction and Monk Office Supply has kindly donated the printing needs for the event.

Keynote speaker, Adam Olsen, candidate for the Green Party of BC in Saanich North and the Islands, will be speaking on the importance of the Salish Sea. Last month Adam was on CBC’s The Dragons’ Den pitching the knitwear products from the family business Salish Fusion Knitwear located in Brentwood Bay.

Funds raised at the Sea of Love Sip & Bid will help support the Centre’s many programs (behind the scenes tours, monthly lectures and Oceaneer enrichment events) as well as school programs which are directly linked to grade-specific B.C. Ministry of Education Prescribed Learning Outcomes.

The Centre offers weekly programs such as Tots Tuesdays and Senior Sessions Thursdays. The aim is to engage the community in the fascinating world that exists just below the ocean’s surface.

For more information visit www.oceandiscovery.ca.Tiger Lily Events, a wedding and event management business new to the community, has partnered with Cheryl Young, president of Sidney Meet

Up, for the fundraiser. Tara Keeping, founder of Tiger Lily Events and member of Sidney Meet Up, knows the value of belonging to a local business networking group. Sidney Meet Up was founded in March 2012 and has over 60 members, which includes local MP Elizabeth May. Members range from photographers to publishers to doctors.

The group has planned numerous events and fundraisers since they began: Spring Fling Fashion Show at the Sidney Pier Hotel & Spa, a Woodwynn Farms fundraiser, Church & State Raptors for Victoria Adoptables, a Sea Cider fundraiser for Coen Wallace and a fundraiser for Star Cinema, just to name a few. Shop local / think localPart of what makes our neighbourhoods special are the businesses that thrive within them. As Saanich Peninsula entrepreneurs we strive to meet the needs of and give back to our diverse community. We ask that you please take a minute to think about the large potential of your consumer dollar.

You are investing in your community by supporting its unique businesses. Appreciate what makes our neighbourhoods different. Our one-of-a-kind businesses are an inherent part of the distinctive character of our neighbourhoods; that is what brought us here and will keep us here. Shop local and stay connected to the merchants in your community.

put your

money where

your houSe iS

When you shop local, three times the revenue remains in your community, supporting parks, schools and more! For every $100 spent at a locally owned business, $45 goes back into the community and our tax base. For every $100 spent at a chain store, only $14 comes back.

live local / give localCommunity involvement works both ways. Many retailers believe in being involved: giving back to their communities is the right thing to do and they cheerfully donate to a variety of local causes, charities, fund raisers and sports teams. When businesses “give back,” communities appreciate the support and reciprocate.

help the environmentIndependent businesses make purchases requiring less transportation and are usually located in the heart of small communities rather than “on the fringe,” meaning less impact on the environment.

get better ServiceLocal businesses often hire people who have a better understanding of the products they’re selling and take more time to get to know their customers.

our future iS nowBy supporting independent businesses today, you are investing in a unique and sustainable future for the Saanich Peninsula community. Small business owners live locally and are therefore more invested in the future of our neighbourhoods. Local entrepreneurs are also the largest employer nationally and they provide the most jobs to new residents.

If you have a favourite business in your community, please continue to support it all year round. This will ensure we are all here for the long haul!

More information can be found at www.breadnervet.com.
