A Word From The State Coordinator

The Last Brass Monkey Run was successful again in 2013! Attendance was not what we hoped, but all in all it was a good time and we made some money.. Thanks to all who helped work the event! Even though it’s still a little frosty outside, there are several events taking place. Check out the fliers in the Spoke. We upgrading our database so please contact us with your current contact information.. We have a busy season ahead of us with lots of new ideas.

We are well into the Legislative session. SB14-020 was passed out of the Senate committee so it will move on to the floor and hopefully by the time you read this we are in the House with it. Precinct caucuses are coming up, please get involved! Contact Stump if you need some guidance. Remember we are willing to come to your area to do training if you want us to.

I’d like to briefly address some issues that have been pointed out to me over the past couple of months. First and foremost, if you ever have any questions or feel uninformed, please contact your District Rep or Regional or the State Office. I know many of you are not able to attend meetings, but make sure that your Rep has your email address, or pick up the phone and ask questions. Kristi Truscott 14-12414-1212. Treasurers make sure you have current signature cards for your District. Remember your District Rep or Ass’t District Rep must sign the checks. I’d like to congratulate our Dream Catcher bike raffle winner Lynette Janzen. She is a District 1 member. We appreciate everyone’s support with the raffle. We made some extra money for ABATE. Congratulations to Bill and Belva Smith of District 1 and the recipients of the 2013 Jim Bishop award. Thank you and congratulations to Dave and Carolyn Cawley again from District 1 and winners of the 2013 Volunteer of the Year award.

ABATE is looking for a Metro Region Coordinator. If you have interest in this position, please contact your District Rep to submit your name. We hope to appoint this position at our March SBOD meeting.

We are starting to plan the Best of the West in June. We’ll be getting some info out in the next couple of weeks. A membership committee has been formed and we are planning a contest, stay tuned for details!! We have several State events coming up and I hope you will make a point to attend. Please see the District events happening this month.

I am hoping by the time you read this our Denver Broncos are Superbowl Champions!!

That’s all I have for this month …

Ride Safe and Happy Valentine’s Day!!

RANDY’S RANT

I take my bikes in regularly, both for normal service, and repair work. Obviously I do the things I am able be-cause, let’s face it, I am not made of money, (crap!) If that were the case I probably wouldn’t be writing these rants because I would be out traveling and enjoying life more. I have had good, and very bad experiences with service people. I will start with the bad.

I had some electrical issues that seemed at first glance to be fairly straight forward. I had replaced my battery after about 4 or 5 years on my bike. After about 1 month the bike would not start due to a dead battery. I recharged the battery and tried not using my turn signals for a while and signaling with my hands instead. This seemed to help till about 3 months later when it would not start again. I figured it was something to do with the charging system, and checked out all the things I was conversant with, which admittedly was not much. Not having any success, I sought the help of some of my buddies. One of them suggested that I take it to a place here in Fort Collins. He said he took his Electra Glide there all the time.

I also needed a new chain and rear sprocket so I decided to let these folks handle both these and the electrical issue. So I went and dropped off my bike and proceeded to wait. 1 and ½ months later I was told the problem had been fixed so I went and rode the bike home. The next morning I went out to start it and got the dreaded click click of a very low battery. I called the shop up and was told to bring it back. I did. 2 months later they called and said that they could not figure out the problem and just decided to hard wire the alternator to the battery. When I got to the shop, paid the $670 bill and proceeded to load the bike up, I noticed that one of the rear turn signals was hanging down and asked the mechanic who was helping me load what happened. He said he didn’t know, but they would fix it if I bought the replacement part. (WHAT!) I was super upset and proceeded to cuss out the owner of the place till I could not speak any more.

Needless to say I have never been back to that place. I am purposely leaving out the name of the place to avoid casting aspersions since some other people obvi-ously have had good experiences there. After all they have been in business for quite a number of years.

SERVICE PEOPLE

I was steered to a place in Loveland by a friend of mine and the very first time I went there for service, I met the head of the service department. He proceeded to take very good care of me and after all was said and done, he even offered me a 15% discount on both parts and service. I have been going to this place now for about 6-7 years and I always make it a point to speak to the same guy. We have become friends over the years and he always does me right. He is not bound by his company and will always suggest 1 or 2 alternative ways of fixing an issue or even suggest another place if necessary. I respect him very much and will always take my bikes there.

I hope you readers do not have the bad experiences I did, but I am sure there are some horror stories worse than mine and conversely there are some better ones also.

Wheels down and oil pressure up folks,

Randy Mumma, (Squirrel)

NORTHEAST REGIONAL REPORT

Welcome

to 2014! This should be a great year for ABATE of Colorado. There are many events already planned so get them on your calendars and support the district and state events. Speaking of state events, the Last Brass Monkey Run was held on December 31, 2013 with a good turnout. The weather was cooperative which helps as we all know and the attendees had a good time.

It looks like about 370 motorcyclists attended and ABATE showed a profit of just under $3000. The poker walk was the most popular event during the day. That, along with the pool tournament, provided some added entertainment so everyone had the opportunity to enjoy the day even more than in the past. The committee planning and running the event did a wonderful job! It makes things run much more smoothly when there is a lot of help and planning. A special thanks to the Grizzly Rose for hosting the event and the metro area districts for the starting point registration at the old Suzy’s parking lot and at the Frontier Club.

One of the exciting events was the drawing for the Dream Catcher motorcycle that the Helping for Horsepower girls group put together. One of our own District One members and sponsors, Lynette Janzen from A & R Automotive in Brush, CO was the big winner. We look forward to seeing Lynette and Arvin along with the bike at our events this year.

As always the chili cook-off and thee chili-eating contest were popular events. A lot of door prizes were given out and, of course, the popular brass nuts were given to each participant. As we look forward to December 31, 2014 and this year’s Last Brass Monkey Run, the planning committee has already met, reviewed the 2013 event and is working on 2014. If you have any ideas, thoughts, or suggestions for making it better, please let us know. You can contact the state office or email me at [email protected].

Here’s to getting the winter over and riding weather started. Everyone be safe and keep the rubber on the road.

ASMI, is available so keep your eye on the ABATE website for classes. If you want to have one in your area, let us know and we will get something scheduled. Being prepared in case of an emergency is important! Both the Basic and Advanced courses will be offered this next year.

Have a great 2014! Be safe and ride often!

Have a great 2014! Be safe and ride often!

MRF REPORTHey Brothers & Sisters,

On a federal level, a companion bill to HR1861 will be introduced in the senate.HR1861 is the House version of the Stop Motorcycle Only Checkpoint Funding Act.It’s good to see that the Senate will get on board with a bill on their side. HR1462, introduced by Rep. Goodlatte (R-VA) has 53 co-sponsors and will lower the total amount of ethanol produced in the U.S. HR875, introduced by Rep. Sensenbrenner ,(R-WI), has 22 co-sponsors and halts the sale of E-15 until further testing is done on the harmful eff ects to vehicles. HR 2414, again introduced by Rep. Sensenbrenner, is the BLACK BOX PRIVACY PROTECTION ACT. Th is act clarifys who “owns” the info collected in your vehicle. We have “ lost” 2 motorcycle friendlies in Congress. Tom Latham (R-IA) is stepping down and Sen. Max Baucus, is going to be nominated as Ambassador to China. As state legislatures get back in session there are a variety of bills to be aware of. New York: Senate Bill 6114 would amend the administrative code of New York City to prohibit more than 50 motorcyclists from gathering as an assembly without paying for and obtaining a permit from NYCDOT. Also, Senate Bill 6180 would defi ne an “illegal maneuver” as any maneuver that requires the front or rear wheel to leave the ground.Fines would be $2500 and revocation of license. Virginia has a couple bills to be aware of.HB441 would require new policies on known salvage vehicles to have a premium reduction. Many motorcyclists who have wrecked and choose to put their bikes back on the road have had to pay the same premiums as before the wreck. Th is bill makes sure the insured knows that the vehicle is worth less and the insurance company cannot charge the higher premiums for a vehicle worth less. HB542 concerns wearing a mask in public.Currently this is a class 6 felony. Exceptions are mc helmets and masks on certain holidays. Some motorcyclists have been pulled over and forced to remove cold weather face masks.Th is bill would clarify the Virginia Supreme Court ruling that the person wearing the mask must be trying to conceal their identity. Th ere will be much more as bills are introduced by various

Hello D1

Well I hope you all had a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year it was a little different for Carolyn and I were under the weather the last two weeks of the year and that really suck but once in 50 years isn’t a bad average, but we are looking forward to 2014. Dec. 31,2013 ABATE of Colo. held it’s biggest fund raiser, the 26th Annual Last Brass Monkey Run. The weather turned out to be very nice and we had a pretty good turnout. I want to thank all D1 members who showed up for this great event. The Chili cook-off we did have 1 member Carolyn Cawley who came in 2nd Place in the Red Division Congrats. And The Dreamcatcher Bike drawing was done and the winner was Lynette Janzen of Brush, Congrats to our D1 member. I want thank Don Enninga and his committee for doing such a great job. So what’s next for D1 and 2014 well our membership is going up and I thank all D1 members who have put that extra effort in signing up new members, because the membership contest will continue for 2014. Our Jan. monthly meeting like the one we had at Leroy and Penny’s house even with bad weather we had 24 who showed up, the meeting went a little long, but with good

food and spirits the meeting went well Thank You Leroy and Penny for hosting it. After the meeting we raffled a surprise gift which Penny won; a Route 66 sign that will sure look good in Leroy’s Garage. Congrats. We also sign up a new member David Capps of Sterling welcome to our family. We raised another $104.00 towards our Christmas for Kids. MADDDOG DAVE

Hello D-3… I’ve had a rough past couple of months due to the passing of my father just before Thanksgiving. Although his death was not unexpected (he was under hospice care for a few months), the holidays were not the same without him. Last year held many heartbreaking surprises- good riddance to 2013.I’m ready to jump into action here in our District now… Stump has informed me of how many of our members (i.e., constituents) live in various Senate and House Districts right here in Northern Colorado… we can start canvassing these representatives’ meetings and maybe get some items taken care of. For your information, ABATE of Colorado will be hosting the Best of the West (a big inter-state Motorcycle Rights Conference) later this year- please contact me if you would like to attend and/or volunteer. We have our Lobby Day on Friday, March 28th- I particularly appreciate this day to get face to face with our representatives at the State House in Denver and discuss our interests with them.

The February D-3 meeting is noon on Sunday the 9th at Crazy Jack’s Saloon (6520 S. College Ave., Ft. Collins 80525-corner of Trilby and US 287)… hope to see you there.

Hello District 10 members,

As most of you know our district has voted to move our monthly meeting to Noonan’s Sports Bar & Grill at 13521 E Iliff Ave. Aurora Co. at 10 AM. Our first meeting will be on Jan.26 2014. As we move forward as a district, remember that as a member of ABATE your ideas and opinions for the district are very important to those that you have entrusted to represent the district. As your district rep. I feel that it is my duty to represent all the district members in their thought and voices. As the District moves into the next year, we will have many things to look forward to. Starting with the Corn Beef Bash in March, Blessing of the Bikes In May and our first attempt at an IRONAZZ 500 in July. We also have 2 BBQ event’s for the MRA racing team, one in June and one in August. I am looking to have a great year with all of you and many others that may join our district this coming year. For now ride safe and remember ................. CARS ARE EVERYWHERE!

District 11 - ABATE of Colorado

We are planning a poker walk in Leadville on Friday, February 14, Valentines Day. E-mail [email protected] for details; we’ll get the info to you as soon as it is finalized. Discussions continue on how to re-energize our existing membership and bring new members into the fold. Some members feel that any de-emphasis on fund raising will be detrimental to the organization while others are concerned that in trying to plan fun events to bring new folks in we are abandoning ABATE’s primary mission, rider education. I invite all members of D-11 to come to our next meeting on February 3 at the VFW in Johnson Village and share your thoughts and ideas o how to make our organization stronger.

Gary

Hey D-17 Looks like winter is here and hopefully we’ll get a riding day in here or there. That’s one of the things I love about Colorado. I don’t store my bike for the winter, it is ready to ride all year long. I trust everyone had an enjoyable Holiday season with family and friends. I know some years the Holidays can be not so good, I’ve had my share of those and so have you. But, I hang in because there is always hope for a better future. The legislature will be back in session and that is always a source of concern. Our representatives need our input, if you don’t know how to contact them we can get that information for you. If we are going to be relevant we have to stay informed and ready to act. Also, the Governors race will be coming this fall. I saw one tv ad just the other day. I’m thinking a change may be in order. I enjoyed seeing friends at the Last Brass Monkey Run, this makes 14 for me. How about you, how long have you been supporting ABATE with your attendance? Ok, I look forward to seeing you at the next District meeting, third Tuesday of the month, 7:30 pm at the Shack, Mineral and Broadway.

Ride Well,

Mike
