This time of year, people often focus on eating better or losing those pesky ten pounds that crept on during the holidays. At Kalamazoo Loaves & Fishes, healthy food is always a top priority. I would like to take a moment, however, to address the issue of obesity and hunger. Hunger is quite often associated with being very thin, and in many cases, this is true. But in the food bank world, we have all heard the occasional naysayer contest that an overweight individual can’t possibly be lacking food. It is surprising to many people that hunger and obesity can co-exist in the same individual or family. The truth is that both hunger and obesity can be consequences of poverty and lack of access to healthy, nutritious food. With tight budget constraints, low- income families frequently buy cheaper, higher calorie foods. Healthy, unprocessed foods are significantly more expensive and often unavailable. Limited access to adequate health care and stress can also contribute to weight gain. Through all of our programs, especially the Grocery Pantry Program, we are dedicated to providing well-balanced, nutritious food. Individuals who visit our pantries make selections from proteins, fruits, vegetables and grains based on the USDA’s recommendations. We continue to foster and maintain relationships with local farmers to secure fresh produce, meat, and eggs. Through our voucher program with area grocery stores, fresh milk is available to those who need it. When you’re striving to achieve something like your New Year’s resolutions, it’s easy to imagine all of the obstacles that can get in your way. For people who experience food insecurity and hunger, every day represents a new obstacle. It is our goal to remove one enormous hurdle for local families. When someone’s basic needs are met, new opportunities are created for them to be better parents, better employees, and better neighbors. If one of your goals for 2015 is to eat healthier, consider helping someone else achieve this goal too by donating nutritious meal items or giving a monetary gift. A gift of any size to Kalamazoo Loaves & Fishes ensures nutritious foods are available to those in need. Good luck with your resolutions and our best to you and your family in the New Year! A NOTE FROM JENNIFERWith 2015 underway, you may have made some New Years resolutions.

But in the food bank world, we have all heard the occasional naysayer contest that an overweight individual cant possibly be lacking food. It is surprising to

many people that hunger and obesity can co-exist in the same individual or family. The truth is that both hunger and obesity can be consequences of poverty and lack of access to healthy, nutritious food. With tight budget constraints, low-income families frequently buy cheaper, higher calorie foods. Healthy, unprocessed foods

are significantly more expensive and often unavailable. Limited access to adequate health care and stress can also contribute to weight gain.

Through all of our programs, especially the Grocery Pantry Program, we are dedicated to providing well-balanced, nutritious food. Individuals who visit our pantries make selections from proteins, fruits, vegetables and grains based on the USDAs recommendations. We continue to foster and maintain relationships with local farmers to secure fresh produce, meat, and eggs. Through our voucher program with area grocery stores, fresh milk is available to those who need it.

When youre striving to achieve something like your New Years resolutions, its easy to imagine all of the obstacles that can get in your way. For people who experience food insecurity and hunger, every day represents a new obstacle. It is our goal to remove one enormous hurdle for local families. When someones basic needs are met, new opportunities are created for them to be better parents, better employees, and better neighbors.

    FEBRUARY 2015

  • Margaret works full-time and receives SNAP benefits, but still struggles to be food secure. Her current SNAP benefit is $16 per month. With those funds, she purchases other important food items, including fresh produce and coffee.

There were months when I could barely pull it all together to pay the bills, let alone have any extra money to put away for savings, said Margaret. By receiving support through SNAP and Loaves & Fishes, I dont have to spend so much of my personal funds at the grocery store. Instead, I can use that money for bills or gas to get to work. I can spend what money I do have more responsibly.

Margaret felt such support from visiting one of our Mobile Food Initiative sites that she spread the word. Now her neighbors occassionally come with her. Margarets neighbors were factory workers at an automotive plant until they were laid off during the recent recession. While maintaining

part-time work where they could find it, they still werent able to hang on to their home. When Margaret visited them one day, she casually asked how they were doing with groceries.

I just used our last potato, her neighbor replied. Now we have to decide if were going to buy my husbands prescription today or dinner.

Margaret invited her neighbors on her next trip to the MFI and they were surprised to find so many other people who were in

similar situationsworking but not quite earning enough to get by; living in an apartment and not in a homeless shelter; and on the verge of poverty, but not yet destitute.

Theres so many people in the same boat as us, Margaret said. I think theres a great need for food. Its so important and no one should go hungry. If people dont have food, it affects every area of their life. Im glad KLF is here to ease other peoples burdens.

MFI dates and locations for 2015 are now posted at www.kzoolf.org.

THANKS TO RUN THROUGH THE LIGHTS FOR FOOD & FUNDS Run Through the LightsGazelle Sports and Kalamazoo Area Runners annual holiday racebrought in 908 lbs. of food donations and $9,200 in event proceeds on Dec. 4, 2014. More than 900 people ran or walked through Bronson Park and downtown Kalamazoo. Sponsorships by various local companies, including Maple Hill Auto Group, helped make this event one of our best yet. Thank you to everyone who participatedrunners, volunteers, local businesses, and supporters. Join us in December 2015 for the next Run Through the Lights!

MARGARETS STORY: HELPING A NEIGHBOR IN NEED

Buying bulk items such as rice, pasta, and flour is a cost effective way to secure much needed items for our pantries. Of course, its not realistic to send 50 lb. bags of rice home with families, so we developed a system of repackaging these items for the households we serve.

When putting this system into place, we began looking for a machine to create labels. Seeking advice and a nudge in the right direction, we contacted Len Boekhaven at local business Cummins Label, Inc. to see what he recommended.

That call resulted in an amazing partnership. Instead of giving advice about what label machine to purchase, Cummins Label offered to customize and print all the labels we needed free of charge. Since May 2013, Cummins Label has provided KLF with over 100,000 customized labelsan in-kind donation of nearly $10,000. For two years in a row, they have also served as a major cash

sponsor for Run Through the Lights, one of our fundraising events.

KLFs Procurement Specialist Marv King said, Cummins Labela real gem for KLF. They make me feel like were doing them a favor when I ask for labels. 2,500-10,000 labels at a shot! A huge cost savings compared to making the labels in-house. Their commitment to

supporting our work allows us to direct significantly more money towards food.

Established in 1972, Cummins Label started out in a 2,400 sq. ft. building which has now grown to a staff of 20 in a production facility of 20,000+ sq.

feet. The facility houses a screen printing department as well as several high-speed flexographic printing presses. Hard work and attention to detail has made Cummins Label a leading manufacturer of custom pressure sensitive labels all over the world and to many nationally known brands. FAST FACTS KLF provided 24,247 food orders during

    November and December 2014.

69% of individuals facing food security must choose between paying for food or paying for utilities a difficult choice during frigid winters. (2014 Feeding America Hunger Study)

Nearly 450 volunteers assist KLF each week, which helps us keep costs low and serve more people in need.

Scheduled monthly giving has become more popular with donors who wish to support KLF year-round and spread their charitable giving over a period of time.
