Fifty-four educators from six school divisions and three higher education institutions participated in a two-day workshop at IALR. The Career ChoICE Expo planning team, Dan River Region Collaborative, and IALR provided the opportunity at no cost for educators to be better equipped with tools and resources to implement Career Pathways in their school divisions. The Virginia Department of Education requires all eighth grade students to have academic and career plans. Scientists at IALR have tested cucumber grafting in the greenhouse and are seeing a 200% increase in yield for grafted English cucumbers (3 to 4 pounds more produce for each grafted plant). In addition to the higher yield, the grafted plants are not being sprayed with any pesticides. English cucumbers are not typically grown in Southern Virginia, however, English cucumbers have significant potential to be a new cash crop for Southern Virginia, selling for approximately $1.00 to $1.50 more per cucumber.
