Head Lice Checks at Brock
Our school will be providing lice
screening to the students to minimize
the cases of head lice. We have of-
fered this program since last year and
it has been highly successful in reduc-
ing the number of cases. All students
will be checked for lice by an ap-
proved provider.
If you do not wish to have your child’s head checked,
please write a note to your child’s teacher by March 10,
2017.

January Character Recognition Assembly
On February 16, Brock celebrated Fairness, January’s character trait. Ms. da Silva’s class performed a poem called Nine Gold Medals. Its message was how sometimes working together is more important than being a single winner. It told the story of how one athlete tripped and fell and instead of running over him, all his competitors
rallied around him and they all crossed the finish line together.
We would like to congratulated the following winners for their excellent demonstration of teamwork this month:
Ms. B’s Class: Daenerys and Xander Ms. Christian’s Class: Diogo and Mohammad
Ms. Evelyn’s Class: Kyle and Oliver Ms. Pringle’s Class: Kathy and Solomon
Mr. Crifo’s Class: Aliyah and June Ms. Moreiro’s Class: Thomas S.B. and Alishba
Mr. Hong: Sonia and Carson Ms. Smith’s Class: Kian and Karen
Ms. Givelos’ Class: Ema and Brigid Ms. da Silva’s Class: Ilija and Kayla
Mr. Bryers’ Class: Vivian and Jenny Ms. Papel’s Class: Sophia and Lauren
Ms. Barbier’s Class: Michael and Janet Mr. Malolos’ Class: Joshua and Elijahh
Ms. Samuel’s Class: Daniel and Arden Ms. Yannopoulos’ Class: Emily R. and Emerson
Congratulations, winners! We hope that you continue to show amazing teamwork skills throughout the whole year!
Wellness Leaders Update
By Lillian
The Wellness Leaders are now working more with Ms. da
Silva and Ms. Kondo to plan fun events about mental
health and well being. During Wellness Club, the Well-
ness Leaders sometimes meditate and do yoga. There
have also been times when they sat on the carpet and talk
freely about their feelings. The main thing is that they
have been learning about meditation, beliefs, self esteem, and perspective during these
meetings.
The Wellness Leaders have also been planning a lot of very special things for our school.
They remain very secretive about it so it was hard to get more information. They say it will
be very exciting and interesting for the whole school. What they would say is that they have
been planning three events for the school about the topics they’ve talked about. They’re plan-
ning these events now as you read this so stay tuned Brock!
Sports Update By Cathy and Darryl
Volleyball
In early December, the junior and intermedi-ate girls volleyball teams started practising for their tournament.
“We were learning how to serve, spike and set over the net” said Carmen and Sowarima in grade 7. Student have been learning the basic skills to play the game such as how to bump and volley. The team would like to thanks Ms. Barbier for coaching the junior girls volleyball team and players would like to thank Ms. Moreiro and Mr. Malolos for coaching the intermediate girls volley-ball team.
Intermediate Hockey Games On Janu-ary 18 the intermedi-ate hockey players
had a game at Angela James Arena against Highland P.S. They did well in the first period, but then Highland started scoring and scoring and at halftime High-land started passing to kill time. Brock ended up losing the first game but they had their second game a week later.
All of the hockey players then went early in the morning to Larry Gross-man Arena to go play against Cedarvale P.S. Cedarvale started out shooting a lot, and Tomas , our amazing goalie, saved 27 shots by the end. Nolan said “our opponents were very skilled,” and “Brock’s defense was good.” The end score was 6-0 but Brock still had a great morning. We also have to say a special thanks to Ms. Samuel for organiz-ing the games, and all the parents and people who helped carpool the players there. Also, a special shout out to Officer Eric for all of his help and support!
Junior Hockey Games
On Monday January 22, the junior hockey team began their sea-son. Dinis was an amazing goalie who saved at least 30 shots.
Good job Dinis!! Ryan scored 4 goals and everyone played well and had a lot of fun.
The players agreed that the other team was good and talented but they tried their best. The play-ers would like to thank Ms. Samuel for taking her time to coach the junior hockey
team. We are getting better and better!
Silver Birch Update
The Silver Birch Club has been meeting twice a week in the li-brary at lunch. The members are in grades 4 to 6, but we even have a couple of grade 7 and 8 students. Ms. Kondo is reading OCDaniel by Wesley King. It’s about a boy struggling with his as yet undiagnosed OCD and his unsuccessful attempts to avoid playing football. Oh, he’s also helping a new and unusual friend solve her father’s suspected murder. The students are really enjoying listening to the book and often shout “nooooo keep going!” when it’s time to go back to class. We recently sent a tweet to Wesley King telling him how much we love the book, and he responded back!
Em thinks that “Silver Birch is a great club to hang out with friends and quietly relax.” She also en-thusiastically states that all the books the club has read so far have been amazing. Students are also reading the other nominated books on their own and are completing their response journals in or-der to earn a new book for their home collection. It’s been great to see so many students excited to read. New members are always welcome!
Grade 7 and 8 Ski Trip
By Ilija and Edward
On January 13th, all the intermediate classes
went to Snow Valley for the day to ski and snow-
board. When we got to Snow Valley we were welcomed by their wonderful staff, who told
us the rules. For example, one of the rules was to stay in a group of at least 4. Then the
staff put us through a series of stations and if they thought we were ready they would give
us our green sticker, allowing us to go on almost every hill there.
Gomes in grade 8 said “My first time was scary but when I got the hang of it I really enjoyed
skiing and would definitely go again”. Everyone either skied, snowboarded or stayed in the
chalet to eat lunch. Most people’s favourite part of the
day was the ski lifts because you are in the
air going up the big hill. Thanks to the
teachers for bringing us. We are excited for
next year!
Red Maple Update
By Hollis
The time for Red Maple is here once more, and lots of great things are hap-pening! There are books to read, and authors to meet! On January 27th, we had our first virtual author visit with Lorna Schultz Nicholson, author of Born With. “I liked how we were able to interact with Lorna, and ask her ques-
tions,” said Aberdeen. “She even answered one of ours!” It was great to see so many people listening in on this author visit. We learned about Down Syndrome, inclusion, and the Best Buddies organization.
We have ordered the tickets for the awards ceremony at Harborfront, and we are all set to go for May 16th! Thanks to everyone who handed in their forms on time! Some recommended books to read for the ceremony are Flickers by Arthur Slade, Lucky Jonah by Richard Scrimger, and the Brock favour-ite, Shooter by Caroline Pignat!
When asked about their favourite books, many people had many different opinions. “My favourite book is Shooter, because there are lots of cliffhangers,, and it’s very hard to put down,” explained Car-men. “My favourite so far is The Hill,” stated Tishiyah.
Well, Red Maple has gotten off to a fantastic start, and we can’t wait to see what comes next!
Silver Birch Spotlight
By Lillian
OCDaniel by Wesley King is about Daniel, who doesn’t know he has OCD (obsessive compul-sive disorder). He’s also the back up kicker for his football team, but he nev-er plays (or so he thinks).
He talks to this girl named “Psycho Sara”
who never talks to anyone. But, they end up going on an adventure to see whether Sara’s father was murdered by her mom’s boyfriend, or if he just ran away.
All the members of the Silver Birch Club really love OCDaniel. If you want to know if Daniel gets help for his OCD and what real-ly happened to Sara’s dad, you should defi-nitely read this book!
Grade 1/2 Trip to Warren Park
By Kayla
On January 18, the grade 1/2 classes
went to Warren Park. Warren Park is a
nature park. Everyone that attended the
Warren Park trip liked it and wanted to
go again. In Ms. Pringle’s class Daniel said
“ We did lead rubbings and we painted
over on the paper and it was really fun.”
Esha said “My favourite part was walking
through the trees.”
In Mr. Crifo’s class, Gerardo said that
they did a scavenger hunt where they had to find animals
that lived in water and land. They also had to scan the
woods with the outline of the animal with the iPad. Stu-
dents in Mr. Crifo’s class saw a huge
salmon that looked liked it was fake but
it wasn’t. It was covered in a coating
that made it look fake. Both classes had
an amazing time on the trip. Special
thanks goes to Ms. Pringle, Ms, Joanna
and Mr. Crifo for organizing this amazing
trip for the grade 1/2’s!!
Grade 8 Trip to Bloor CI
By Makenna
On January 18, the grade
8 students in Mr. Bryers’
class and Ms. Papel’s class
went to Bloor Collegiate
Institute. Students and
teachers welcomed our stu-
dents into their school to
give them a tour around the
school, and persuade our students to apply there
for grade 9. Maxwell said that the science room
interested him. The room was full of supplies and
materials to experiment with. Erjon said that he’s
going to Bloor C.I next year though he was consid-
ering other schools too. Maxwell and Erjon said
that the students seemed kind and happy to be
there. Does this sound interesting to you? Are you
intrigued? Just wait until you’re in grade 8 and take
the trip B.C.I. Maybe you will see some of your
former friends there if you decide to go too!
Red Maple Spotlight
By Carmen
Shooter by Caroline Pignat, is
one of this year’s Red Maple
nominees. Shooter is about five
12th graders who are trapped in
an unlocked bathroom during a lockdown. We
get to know the characters while they wait out
the lockdown. Alice is a good writer and has an
autistic older brother, Noah. Isabelle is the
popular girl and the president of the student
council. Hogan is an ex-football player who eve-
ryone is scared of for doing something awful.
Xander is always taking pictures but never re-
ally talks to anyone. During the lockdown, they
learn about each other’s lives and how they are
different yet the same. One of them knows
more about the shooter than anyone else in the
whole school. Could they be the key to surviv-
al? Or will the lockdown end in tragic deaths?

Junior Book of the Month
By Nevaeh
The junior book of the month is A Hand-
ful of Time by Kit Pearson. It is an ethe-
real book. It is a perfect novel, and espe-
cially eye-catching.
Patricia, the main character, is sent to a
cottage in Vancouver because of family
issues. She is quiet and introverted, so,
she doesn’t fit in well with all of the
other kids. Later on, while exploring, she finds an old, bro-
ken watch. The watch allows her to go back in time. With
this amazing discovery, she gets to watch the lives of her
family unfold and becomes drawn to it.
The reason why I love this book is how amazingly detailed
the characters are and how much variety there is to them,
Some are outgoing, some are shy, and egotistical. The end-
ing itself is absolutely breathtaking. Read it now!
Primary Book of the Month
By Sowarima
This month’s primary book of the month is I am Josephine ( and I am a living thing) by Jan Thornhill and Jacqui Lee.
The book is about a little girl who tells us that she and everyone else are living beings. Josephine also explains to us that we are all living things, human beings, animals and mammals. Even though we are all of these things and have all of this in common, we are all unique, different, and special in our own way!
This book is also full of cool facts about mammals, living things, and animals. Check out the book at the library to find out more!!!!!
Intermediate Book of the Month
By: Raquel
The Fault in Our Stars, written by John Green, is about a teenage love story. The book takes place in Indiana, U.S.A , which is one of the character’s home town. Hazel Grace Lancaster is the main character, who has been diagnosed with stage 4 thyroid cancer.
Hazel’s mom is trying to make her go to “support group.” At support group people with or who have had cancer attend and talk about how grateful they are
and share their story. Hazel meets a 17 year old boy named Augustus Waters. His cancer story was that he got his leg amputated.
Hazel and Augustus become really good friends, and are starting to catch feelings for one another. Hazel refuses to date Augustus because she thinks she is going to die and hurt his feelings. There’s a twist, just wait till you find out what happens next!
Personally I would recommend the book to others. It was amazing and emotional. Its filled with great description and every page will get you more interested in the book.
Graphic Novel of the Month
By Chompel
This month’s graphic novel of
the month is Child Soldier writ-
ten by Michael Chikwanine. It’s
also a Red Maple Non-Fiction
nominee. Child Soldier is based
on a true story about Michael’s
life. Everything was perfect for
young Michael. He had friends,
he lived a wealthy life, went to school, and best of all
he had a father to look up to. One day when Michael
was playing soccer with his classmates, a group of
soldiers captured Michael and his classmates. Mi-
chael was then blindfolded, drugged, and was given
a gun and was forced to pull the trigger- Michael had
unknowingly killed his best friend. Michael was then
sent to a place where the soldiers had kept all the
kids they had captured. As the days went by, Mi-
chael and the other kids faced cruel tasks and trau-
matizing events. One day Michael and some other
kids were sent on a mission to invade a school. Mi-
chael had the chance to escape and he did. Find out
if Michael will be caught by the soldiers or be reunit-
ed with his family.
