A Message from the Office
At Beaumonde Heights JMS we continue to reinforce our focus on Character Education. This past month our focus was on empathy. Our staff reinforced the understanding or sharing of the emotions and experiences of another person. For December, we will focus on Kindness and Caring. We will stress that students be kind to each other in the classroom and outside. We will expect that all members of the school community will demonstrate understanding of others by treating them with compassion, generosity, and a forgiving spirit. We will stress the notion of talking positively about others and to considerer the needs of others. This is a theme that is also reinforced when helping students resolve minor conflicts. When you have questions regarding your child, the first step is to contact your child’s homeroom teacher. It is extremely important to establish a positive working relationship with teachers as this is key to preventing issues and alleviating any confusion about program or homework. Our staff at Beaumonde Heights JMS is committed to doing what is needed in the best interests of our students. When a partnership is established between school and home, we are also modeling good communication to our children As schools and communities deal with incidents in school involving bullying, the need to understand the issue is ever more apparent. Bullying is defined as “typically a form of repeated, persistent and aggressive behaviour that is directed at an individual or individuals that is intended to cause (or should be known to cause) fear and distress and/or harm to another person’s body, feelings, self-esteem, or reputation. Bullying occurs in a context where there is a real or perceived power imbalance. [Ministry of Education’s Policy/Program Memorandum No. 144, Bullying Prevention and Intervention, October 4, 2007] There are many factors taken into consideration before disciplining students including age, special needs and a student’s history as well as whether progressive discipline has previously occurred. Progressive discipline uses a continuum of prevention strategies, interventions, supports and consequences that are appropriate to each case and student. While disciplinary measures are taken to correct and support students, strategies to reinforce positive behavior and restore relationship are also enforced.

Grade 4 Presented Kindness and Caring in December
The Grade 4 classes will be presented the Kindness and Caring assembly in
December. However, as we all know, kindness and caring happens all year round.
We can all continue to show that we care with our words, thoughts and actions.
The Beaumonde community shows its kindness in many ways. Some examples
include: being there to listen and help when friends need us; donating food and
other items to the food drive; raising money for worthy causes (e.g. Terry Fox
walk, Jump Rope for Heart); being friendly and playing with our classmates at
recess; helping each other with our learning; volunteering our time to help others.
We hope you enjoyed our assembly in December. The Grade 4 Team

February is Chinese
Heritage Month
The Toronto District School Board is
proud to recognize Chinese Heritage
Month (CHM) during the month of
February. The theme selected by the
CHM Planning Committee for the year
is “Year of the Dog”.
During this month, we celebrate the
energetic culture and traditions of the
Chinese community with students,
staff and community members of the
Toronto District School Board and the
City of Toronto.
The Chinese community is integral to
the growth and success of the City of
Toronto and Canada. Members of the
Chinese community represent
approximately 10 percent of the total
GTA population and form its second
largest visible minority
group. Canadians remember and
appreciate the Chinese workers who
helped build the Canadian Pacific
Railway that united our
country. Chinese-Canadians will
recognize Chinese New Year on
Friday, February 16 with celebrations

National Winter Walk
Day
Wednesday, February 7th is Winter Walk
Day across Canada. It’s the perfect opportunity for parents and kids to get
outside together and stretch those legs! Walk to school for daily physical activity, a
healthier environment, safer streets, making friends and ... having fun! Walking is the
simplest form of exercise and helps kids get those 60 minutes of daily physical activity
they need.
Winter is still a great time to walk and be outside and it’s also a great cure for those winter blues! Dress properly and don't let cold, wind, snow or rain keep you from heading out for a walk. Below are some great winter weather dressing tips from
Green Communities Canada:
• Keep hands and head covered to prevent heat loss;
• Wear warm, waterproof boots; • Wear a warm coat that deflects the wind;
• Woolen clothing helps to retain heat; • On really cold days, wear a scarf over your
face and mouth; • If possible, change wet clothes at school;
• Wear clothing or carry knapsacks with reflective material - it's important to be seen; • Below -25 degrees Celsius is considered
too cold for walking, so move your walk indoors or select another day.
- keeping your child at home when
he/she is ill.

National Day of
Remembrance and
Action on Against
Women - Dec. 6th
On December 6, TDSB
students and staff mark the
National Day of
Remembrance and Action
on Violence Against
Women. Established in
1991 by the Parliament of
Canada, this day coincides
with the anniversary of the
death of 14 young women
who were tragically killed
on 6 December, 1989, at
l‘École Polytechnique in
Montreal because of their
gender.
On this national day of
remembrance, we honour
the memory of these women
and reflect on the ways that
gender violence continues
to affect us. For more
information, visit Status of
Women Canada and
participate in their
#ActionsMatter campaign.
