Gary McGilvray Principal:

Principal’s Message We are just finishing another fantastic month at

Pineway. Our parents, staff and students have

shown their spirit by supporting many activities

and events throughout March.

Spring is in the air - the warmth and sunshine that

comes with it just does something to the soul.

Unfortunately with the Spring thaw and the rains

that come during these months, our field area is

quite muddy and parents are reminded to ensure

children have outdoor footwear and a second set

of clothes in the event of falling on the field

outside.

We continue to experience many

students who arrive late to school

in the morning. Supervision

begins at 8:30 a.m. and our doors

open at 8:40 a.m. Please help

our students to be good citizens.

Punctuality is a lifelong skill.

Staffing for 2016 - 2017 has begun and I will report

our school organization for next year at our SAC

meeting on Thursday, April 7 at 6:00 p.m. in our

conference room. Parents are welcome to attend.

We would also welcome any feedback parents

might have with regards to any school-related

issue.

We are excited with the many activities that go on

at Pineway. To help share in our excitement, we

will be re-activating our Twitter account in the days

ahead. Why not follow us on Twitter @PinewayPS

to keep up to date with school news.

Mr. McGilvray-

Junior Firefighters

On Monday morning near first recess we went

upstairs to see the firefighters! When we got to the

room we saw two firefighters. One of them was

called Andrew; I thought he was the fire chief.

We learned what to do to keep safe if there was a

fire. They told us why it is important to have a fire

alarm at home and that we should change the

batteries in the alarm every six months. At home,

we should have a meeting place to go to if there is

a fire.

I got dressed up as a firefighter. When I was in the

suit it felt a little heavy. I was a little hot too. After,

my class took a picture of me in the firefighter’s

suit with Ms. Walters and the firefighters. One of

the firefighters brought a blackish gray blanket.

They used the blanket as smoke and we had to

crawl under it to show how to escape if there was

a fire.

The firefighters were awesome and I had fun

dressing up as a firefighter!!

International Day of Pink

- Wednesday, April 13, 2016

The International Day of Pink is a day of action,

born when a youth in a high school in Cambridge,

Nova Scotia was bullied because he wore a pink

shirt to school. His fellow students decided to

stand up to bullying; hundreds of students came to

school wearing pink to show support for diversity.

We invite everyone to make a difference and

participate. The goal of the International Day of

Pink is to bring this message across the world,

through an international day of action that anyone

can take part in. We encourage groups to not only

wear pink in support of diversity, but to also hold

events and activities that will engage their

community and challenge gender stereotypes.

The International Day of Pink is more than just a

symbol of a shared belief in celebrating diversity -

it's also a commitment to being open minded, to

being understanding of differences and to being

respectful of each other.

March Break Recount On Monday I went to daycare. I played at the Lego Centre with my friends. After I had lunch then I had quiet time. On Tuesday at daycare I played with my friends we played UNO I came in second place. On Wednesday I played with my friends. I made a picture for my mother. After daycare, I went to

Let it Flow! The Importance of Air and Water

The Grade 2 boys and girls had a wonderful

morning with Scientist Angela on March 29th. They

learned about the water cycle, the properties of air

and water, and the importance of saving water.

The students had a great time solving problems

and testing the properties of air and water through

inquiry-based experimentation! Before conducting

each experiment, the students made hypotheses

about what the outcomes would be.

They learned how to turn water wheels most

effectively, how sail sizes affect the speed of land

yachts, and how useful air bags can be when

lifting heavy loads.

Our Grade 2 scientists have learned so much

about the importance of air and water!

What are Wordles? In Mrs. Bisong’s class, the students are using some colourful language! They used adjectives to describe themselves and then turned the descriptive words into Art!

Poster Contest The Eco-Heroes are holding another Poster Contest! The theme of the posters is Celebrating Earth Day. Posters need to be colourful, creative, and have a positive message about protecting our earth. Please use 11” x 17” paper and hand in your poster to the office by Friday, April 15th. All posters will then be put on display in the front foyer. The winning poster designers will be given a part in our next Eco-Heroes production! There will be a winner chosen from each grade and winning posters will also be featured in our next school newsletter! Good luck everyone!

Combining Art, Language and Math! The grade 2/3 students in Mrs. Bisong’s class enjoyed some cross-curricular learning this month. Using graph chart paper, they drew their names using block letters, and then were challenged to figure out the area and perimeter of their names. Names varied from 3 letters, to 10!

Perfect Snow Over the winter months, the Kindergarten students in Room 102 were involved in an inquiry around snow! They asked questions such as “Where does snow come from?”, “Why does snow glitter?”, “Where is the best place to keep a snowman?”, and “What is perfect snow?”. We explored these questions and more, figuring out that snowflakes start from a single ice crystal, they have six sides, and the best place to keep a snowman is in the freezer! The students also noticed that people and animals leave different tracks in the snow. We became track detectives, and used magnifying glasses and track references to figure out who made tracks that we found in the snow! We ended off our inquiry by creating some plasticene snow scene art inspired by the book, Perfect Snow by Barbara Reid.

Recognition Assembly

During the morning of Friday, April 1, we enjoyed

our monthly Character Trait assembly where we

honoured the Honesty Award recipients. We

enjoyed classroom performances by the grade

1/2’s, Ms. Loo’s JK/SK’s and Ms. Young’s grade

5/6 French class.

Throughout the month of April, we will be focusing

our attention on the character trait of Cooperation.

Earth Hour 2016

This year, Earth hour was observed during the

March Break on Saturday, March 19. Across the

world, people were asked to turn out their lights

from 8:30 – 9:30 p.m. as a promise for

environmental change. Students and staff at

Pineway P.S. celebrated early on the afternoon of

Friday March 11th. During the hours of 2 – 3 p.m.,

all electronics including lights were shut off and

the students enjoyed a variety of environmentally

friendly activities. Some classes went for a nature

walk and enjoyed some outdoor play, and others

opted to clean their classrooms or play board

games inside. Earth hour brings awareness to

environmental challenges we face today. We

should all strive to be aware and responsible

about ways to take care of Earth.

Earth Week

The Eco Heroes are looking forward to Earth

Week at Pineway P.S. from April 18th to April

22nd! Each day of the week they will have

activities planned for the entire school to

participate in as we celebrate Earth Day on April

22.

New Technology @ Pineway

We were excited this past week when a big truck arrived at the front of the school. It was here to deliver 14 new computers to Pineway. Ms. Valentine had prepared the computer lab by removing the older, obsolete computers and preparing the monitors to be connected to these newer Dell computers. These new units combined with some Chrome Boxes make up our lab of 24 computers. We used some school funds as well as some donation money and some money from our fundraising to fund the project. Thank you to our families and community for continually supporting our initiatives.

Lunchtime Activities Things are hopping at Pineway during lunch time! We have many clubs that are up and running which our students can join. We have Folkdance Club, Basketball Club, Girls Club, Boys Reading Club, Pineway Soccer Team, Talent Show, Dance Club, Primary Houseleague Soccer and Friendship Circle. Students - be sure to get involved!
