Happy February! Let’s all work together to
keep our community as safe as possible!
Remember to not let anyone into the
building that you do not know. When
entering or exiting the building please
remember to let the first door close behind
you before you open the next door. A
reminder that the outer door at each building
entrance becomes fob controlled from 10
p.m. to 6:30 a.m. If at any time you feel
uncomfortable or uneasy about something,
talk to a staff member (Management or
Security). Thank you for your help! Security
Officer on Duty phone number is:
612-290-5860.
Some very excited new is Jeff Robinson is
now the new bus Driver. Jeff has worked at
the Care Center in a variety of roles for
almost 20 years. He has accepted this new
position and will be driving the bus going
forward. Please note that when the bus goes
on grocery shop outings the groceries will be
brought to the business office and can be
picked up at the back of the office by the
library. For safety reasons, please only bring
what is necessary on the bus. Walkers that
have baskets filled with personal belongings
make it very hard to secure properly.
Many of you have inquired about getting
updated phone directories. Going forward
instead of printing and distributing to every
resident, the updated directory will be
available to be picked up in the Business
Office. We have received feedback that not
all residents use their phone directory and
don’t want to be wasteful with paper.

As of January 1, Cassia sites are using the
same satisfaction survey provider,
Pinnacle, for both resident and employee
satisfaction surveys. Pinnacle calls
residents, resident contacts, and staff to
determine satisfaction with care, services
and working environment. This
information is documented in a monthly
report shared with each campus’s
administrator, director of housing, or
program director. Surveys will enable
Cassia to learn more about residents’
unique needs and also learn how the care
and services we provide are enhancing the
quality of life for those we serve. In
addition, Pinnacle will inform Cassia about
how employees perceive their working
environment, as our priority is always to be
an employer of choice. Thank you in
advance for answering the phone and
responding to Pinnacle staff. If you have
questions, please contact Director of
Corporate Compliance Sharon Wilson at
[email protected] or call
612-238-5215.
The mission of Augustana Care is to serve God by fostering fullness of life for older adults and other people in need through the provision of health care, housing and other services in a Christian tradition.

Pastor Lette at 612-238-5283.
Many of us know the story of Mary and Martha. One day, Jesus stops by their
house as he walks from village to village. Once inside, Mary quietly settles at his feet to listen to Jesus teach. Her sister
Martha bustles about, preparing for Jesus, and the inevitable crowd of
disciples who follow him around and are hungry. This annoys Martha, who
pressures Jesus to reprimand her sister for not helping her. Instead, Jesus gently reprimands Martha , for her frustration
with how important she believes her tasks to be.
Jesus gentle reprimand is not about condoning unpreparedness, or sitting
away in inactivity. It’s about balance. We are reminded in this story that while
preparation and activity are very im-portant (as anyone who has ever cooked
a church meal or planned a big family event can speak to), so is sitting in still-
ness to listen and be present to our Lord. We can do this in the form of prayer, spending a few minutes each day with God in the quiet moments of our day. Prayer is a way we can settle at the feet
of God. We can ask, and listen for wisdom, truth, and guidance. Prayer is a
way we can also reflect on God’s love and grace. There will always be much to
do in our days, and spending time in prayer is exactly the best way in preparation for those activities.
I encourage and invite you to spend time in quiet; read, reflect, write or just sit still
and look out the window at the world. May you be blessed with some quiet
“Mary-time” in quiet wonderment and awe at the foot of our Lord.
Blessings on your days. Pastor Lette

Winter Lessons: How to Walk on Ice Normally, when we walk, our legs’ ability to support our weight is split
mid-stride.
Walking this way on ice forces each leg to support the weight of the body at an angle that is not perpendicular to the surface of the ice, resulting in a nasty fall.
To walk on ice, keep your center of gravity over your front leg.
One animal that has figured this out is a penguin. Think of yourself as a penguin and you’ll be all right.

Valentine’s Day Heart Healthy Fitness Tips
It is February, the month where we celebrate Valentine’s day, a time for expressing your love to those around you, and yourself too. A great way to take care of yourself is through exercising! Everybody should make fitness a priority in their life. For overall health benefits to the heart, lungs and circulation, a proper warm-up, aerobics, and stretching are important. Below are some tips for healthy exercise: 1) Talk to your doctor Before beginning a new routine, ask if you have any limitations and find out if there are types of exercises you should avoid. 2) Find an activity you enjoy There are countless options out there that raise the heart rate. While you want it to be strenuous, keep it at a level where you can hold a conversation while working out. 3) Walk Everyone should be walking at least 30 minutes per day. It does not have to be all at once but can be 3 sets of ten minutes each, or 2 sets of 15 minutes each, but this keeps you moving and less sedentary. 4) Reap the rewards Exercise has more benefits for stress relief as well, and can be a great motivator to stick with your routine. 5) Fit it into your schedule Exercise really makes you feel good the day you exercise, but then the next day, you need to exer-cise again to get the benefits. Laundry Room Reminders
No Canadian coins---the Canadian
money is breaking our machines
You must stay with your clothes
while doing your laundry—too many
clothes are lying around in our laun-
dry rooms
Please don’t be opening up washer
lids as that stops the washer
Please do not add water to the
washers. When you add water, the
computer knows and will end the
wash. It then drains the machine and
spins leaving your clothes not getting
washed or rinsed.
Make sure that you are cleaning the
dryer lint trap after you are done
using it
Pick-up/Clean-up after yourself (If
you make a mess,—clean it up,
Don’t walk away and leave it.)
With everyone doing this---we are all
helping to keep our laundry rooms
up and running and clean.
Thank-you!
Resident Spotlight John Cevette wrote a poem to celebrate his 70th birthday last August.
Mirror, mirror on the wall,
you show me lies; the truth not at all.
I see a man in his twenties, no more.
You show me one of more than three score.
Please put back my thick curly locks
that frame the face you now mock.
With flesh of chalk-like paste,
you lay the color of my life to waste.
So I now powder and lubricate
to counter what you prevaricate.
Now really, mirror, if truth be told,
I can’t possibly look this old.
The awareness that there is no arrest in the flight of time makes John impatient to measure his life contributions. He divides his life into two phases: before and after his diagnosis of Parkinson’s at age 52.
The first half—before Parkinson’s: John graduated with honors from a consolidated high school in rural Pennsylvania. Following a family move west, he enrolled in the University of Nevada. His election as student body president his senior year, and his involvement with the political campaign of U.S. Senator Howard Cannon led to a staff position in the Senator’s Washington office. Attending night classes at Georgetown University at the same time, he earned his Juris Doctor in 1975.
Cevette stayed on at the Senate for three years, fol-lowed by three years of private law practice. His next employment--with an international public affairs firm evolved into leading his own firm for 17 years, until Parkinson’s sapped his energy level, and he retired.
The better half—living with Parkinson’s: After engaging in “why me?” for a number of months following his diagnosis, John felt the need to make his life productive. Parkinson’s, he feels, became a blessing forcing recognition that gifts of time must be used wisely. Before his second retirement, John served six years as the CEO of a financial holding company, and then another six years as chief of staff of the Colorado state senate.
His current dream is an integrated bike program, providing residents with equipment and support to enjoy the benefits of outdoor activity that biking provides.

Planned gifts, which include bequests, trusts and annuities, can greatly benefit Augustana Care and Augustana Apartments. As Augustana Care serves more than 12,000 people annually, your planned gift can provide essential services that help residents live more fully and vibrantly. One type of planned gift, the charitable gift annuity (CGA), is a great way to supplement your income while providing a gift to Augustana Care or Augustana Apartments. When you purchase a CGA, you receive a tax deduction for the gift and regular income based on the current annuity rate.* For illustrative purposes, a 60-year-old who donates $10,000 may receive a rate of 4.4% (paying $440 annually) while an 85-year-old will see a rate of 7.8% (paying $780 annually) for the same gift. Some charities offer higher rates for donors who agree to wait a number of years before starting to receive payments. You may designate these funds to support Augustana Care, Augustana Apartments or a specific program. To learn more, please call Therese Cain, gift officer, at 612-238-5211 or email at [email protected]
