POLITICS, RELIGION AND SEX

If the reader is expecting an intellectual dissertation on the titled subject(s), he / she will be disappointed and is advised to read no further. In the Air Force Academy 67 years ago, we teen-aged flight cadets were taught that 'officers-and-gentlemen' must never (R) never discuss 'politics', 'religion' or 'sex' in any officers' mess. The origin for this social injunction was traced to 'Customs of the Service' authored by a Gp Capt Stradling of the RAF in the 1940s. Since the IAF evolved from the RAF, many of the latter's policies on training, tactics and traditions were continued by our air force till we created our own.

One lasting legacy from our ex-colonial rulers is the apolitical nature of our armed forces. As a college student in the late 1940s in Kolkata (then Calcutta), politics was only a word, but …. At that stage most of us lads were football crazy, both on the field and in support of our favorite team(s). A certain 'forward – looking' political party let it be known that members of its youth wing would get free tickets to the forthcoming IFA cup finals. This was incentive enough to sign up. We were required to march up and down College Street carrying banners and shouting the refrain to protest / demand slogans in both English and Bengali. At the end we were given a motivational talk and a coupon for a cup of coffee & a cutlet at the Coffee House. It was great fun but, in a few months, the strict warden of our hostel (a Belgian Jesuit father) got wind of our Sunday / holiday outings and put a stop to some promising political careers! (Thankfully the IFA finals were over).

In the course of my final interview at the Air Force Selection Board in 1950 my IO (Interviewing Officer) casually asked if I had ever been involved in politics. I was unsure how to answer, so decided to share the political experience related above. He merely smiled and advised me to stay away from politics if I were selected. I joined the air force in 1951 and was soon immersed in the joys of learning how to fly and making new friends from communities all over India. Religion per se had always been a personal issue but thanks to my colleagues and new friends, I had the opportunity and privilege of visiting gurudwaras, temples, mosques, a synagogue (in the USA) and various

denominations of churches in many countries. I came to learn and better understand the strengths of differing faiths / beliefs. Almost every pilot has, at least once in his flying career, muttered 'Oh God' when faced with a sudden, unexpected emergency in the air, and this includes declared atheists! This did not make us any more or less religious but it certainly sharpened our flight safety practices.

To the generation of my youth, the word 'sex' related exclusively to gender and certainly not to any activity. Of course, the subject of 'girls' was of great interest to young lads learning to cope with hyper active hormones. However, in those days, having a girlfriend involved no more than holding hands but had the promise of being invited to a home cooked meal – a pleasurable change from mess food! Since we young bachelor officers moved frequently on postings, the quest for home cooked meals had, on occasion, to be repeated periodically!

Our media today (print/electronic and professional/social) is replete with the three topics of politics, religion and sex. Our flight cadets of today, which includes young ladies, are freely exposed to the media and are certainly more knowledgeable than my generation at the same point of time. I sometimes wonder if the prohibited subjects are still under embargo or perhaps, with the passage of time, discarded by default in the Indian Air Force of 2019?

THINKING ON YOUR FEET

Whilst on an article titled "Quirks of Late Alaque Padamsee" I wondered if all successful people have some "quirkiness" in them. Armed Forces have their share too. Recently Vice Adm MP Awati passed away at Pune after living a full life.He belonged to the post-Independence transition phase wherein some officers spoke hinglish with a strong British accent. His turnout was immaculate and his grey well-trimmed beard was the hallmark of his identity.

Around the time we joined the Navy, he was the Fleet Commander of the Eastern Fleet based out of Vizag. The Admiral loved his morning walks. He used to drop into any ship at random and scout for under trainees who used to miss out on morning physical training, yell at them in his booming voice in Queens English and fork them to get out and stretch a limb or two.

My course mate Lt. PK Bajaj was one who would compromise anything for his sleep. In one of his morning walks, the Admiral caught Bajaj under the blanket, and went furious. Later in the day the Commanding Officer was called to the Fleet Commander's office along with Lt PK Bajaj and that too in ceremonial dress for a stern warning. The CO was staying some 20 kms from the ship. He drove 40 kms, gathered his ceremonial dress, got it ironed and went to the Fleet Commander's office along with Bajaj. As ever, such meetings are distasteful, this was no different.

On his return to the ship, the CO decided that henceforth every morning he would ring up the ship after breaking his fast to check if all was well on the Eastern Fleet. His ceremonial dress too found a strategic corner in his wardrobe ready to b e p a c k e d a t s h o r t n o t i c e . At this point, you, as a reader must get an insight into how Lt. Bajaj's brain was wired. He was a peace-loving individual who questioned the logic behind every act. For example, at the time of joining the Navy, he was asked if he knew swimming.... Bajaj wondered "why should I know how to swim; I thought Indian Navy had ships?". Well, this was the way his neurons connected.

Coming back to our situation in hand, after the recent showdown in the Fleet Commanders

office, Lt Bajaj was very active a little after sunrise for exactly three more days. On realising that the Admiral is not coming this side he decided to sleep a little more. Little more became little more till he decided no more to morning runs.

The doomsday arrived. It was a Friday, weekend looming large, the Admiral felt an itch to visit some ship. He entered INS Androth and walked straight to the officers sleeping quarters. He saw a civilian bearer polishing a pair of shoes, he asked in his booming voice", Saab log kidarhai"? Without looking up the civilian bearer replied. “Saab Log subah subah PT ke leye chale gaye” The Admiral commented, "Bhahuth Ache Bache. Kaam karthe raho"and walked away nursing his beard!!

The Commanding officer was called by the Duty Officer of the Day and informed that the Fleet Commander had come only to hear a shaky voice ask, "Did all the officers go for PT?” The duty officer said, "Yes sir, all except Lt. PK Bajaj". Now, sweat beads accumulated on his forehead. He quietly took his ceremonial dress and came to the ship; just in case he gets a call.

On reaching the ship all looked good. He hauled up Bajaj and asked him to get his ceremonial dress ready. Bajaj found it funny. When asked if he went for PT he said "No",when asked how the Admiral missed him; he said" I was polishing my shoes when I heard the Fleet Commanders footsteps. I quickly wrapped a towel around my forehead”. The Admiral came and asked"Saab log kidar hai?"I replied "Saab Log subah subah PT ke leye chale gaye"Admiral said," Bhahuth Ache Bache, Kaam...something something”, and walked away nursing his beard. So, saying he helplessly gave away a wry smilethat was perhaps the last time Lt. PK Bajaj twitched his muscles against his wishes!!

MAGICAL MISHMASH – VARIETY ENTERTAINMENT PROGRAM – 01 DEC 2018

The month of December was kickstarted in style by the Palmette Dramatics Society, which staged a unique Variety Entertainment Program intriguingly named “Magical Mishmash”. The evening began with a fusion Kathak dance by Ena, Lovely and Sherry to different tracks. This was followed by a soulful rendering of two Sufi songs sung by Manjushree and Neelam.

Kamesh, Smita and Shaan regaled the audience with a short skit, and this was followed by a medley of melodious Hindi film songs sung by Shyamla, Seema, Ramu and Riyaz. Then an exotic Fashion show based on the five elements and called 'Shunya', was presented by Neelam, Reena, Shobha, Indira, Rohini, Suhasini, Sneha, Nisha, Sunita, Kavita and Sapna. Choreographed by Sunita, the script and narration were by Smita, who also chose the theme music.

Two duets, one in Hindi by Seema and Riyaz and one in English by Shyamla and Daru, were followed by the grand finale. This was a fusion dance by Ena, Sherry, Lovely, Olive and Vandana Vijay, to the iconic song by the Eagles, “Hotel California”. Both the opening and the closing dances were choreographed by Ena and Lovely.

The program was anchored by Ramu.

In the end, the artistes were introduced to Mrs Gayatri Narayanan, wife of Maj Gen TSA Narayanan, Deputy Commandant of MCEME, who presented mementoes to the artistes and the three member band from MCEME.

The Palmette Dramatic Society is indebted to the Chief Patron, Patron, Chairman, Secretary and Assistant Secretary RSAOMI for their unstinted support in the conduct and organization of this event. A special word of thanks to Ms Priyanka Prasad for her help with the publicity material and mementoes, and to all the unsung backstage staff of RSAOMI who made staging this event possible.

HONESTY

When you show honesty you earn someone’s trust. When you earn someone’s trust that they cant trust you. Instead of dishonest how about honest because it’s better to be honest than dishonest. You should be honest to your good friends, parents, teachers and all adults. Not just your good friends but to everyone that you trust. When you lie once you have to lie 1000 more times till the truth spills cut. Sometimes you feel guilty after you lied a long time ago.

When you’re honest you are fair and accepting to the people that you love and trust because they can help you when you’re having a bad day or when times are hard. Like if a hurricane hits, or sometimes when you’re scared may be when you tell them lie real thing that’s scaring you and maybe they can comfort you. You should also be honest at school so that your teachers can keep you safe and they can trust you when you go out of the classroom or on a school electronic. Having trust can be fun because you get to have privilege to do fun stuff, like play video games with your friends unsupervised by an adult or guardian.

So be honest and have fun!!!

Honest is the keyIt helps you to succeedTell the truth and you will be safe from troubleHonesty is the best way to solve a problemTruth is the bestBe honest every dayBecause it is good for you and it is going to help you

FRIENDSHIP

I rarely miss the midnight mass of 24 December. My son was born on Christmas and my two nephews were born on 24 December. We celebrate Christmas like any Christian with Christmas tree, stockings and Christmas Star. I lived in Vishakhapatnam for eleven years during my college days and my best friend those days was Mr Yusuf Khan, who met me incidentally when I was rehearsing a song in an Orchestra at Jamshedpur many decades ago. When Yusuf Khan started his own orchestra, I was included and I used to perform for few years in Commercial Orchestra but later had to stop it due to family pressure. Yusuf used to start his Eid always with me. Incidentally, I was very close to Gurmeet Singh my classmate in intermediate and those days I used to sleep in the Gurudwara which was located opposite to Police Barracks near Choultry, Vizag. Till date, I can recite entire Japji Saheb without any reference. If all of us start respecting other religions, our world can easily become a real heaven.
