TOGETHER WE ACHIEVE

As school returns for 2019 and new students eagerly commence their educational pathways, one former student walked through the gate to begin her career pathway at Hedland Senior High School.

After acing her ATAR exams and graduating Hedland Senior High School in 2018 Dana Bell has joined the Hedland Senior High School staff as the V Swans Trainee for 2019.

Dana will work along side Emma McSweeny and Steve Thompson in the Kicking Goals

program and Shooting Goals program as she works towards her Certificate IV in Sports and Recreation, an extension on the Certificate III she completed during school.

Outside of the classroom, Dana spends her time playing netball for the Spectres in the Port Hedland Netball Association and teaching dance at JABAT Dance Group.

We’re all very excited to welcome Dana into our staffing community and have her happy and bubbly personality continue to brighten our school grounds!

IT HAS BEEN A VERY STRONG START TO THE SCHOOL YEAR.

Our 2018 Year 12 results showed a marked improvement from the previous year (our school is now the top performing median ATAR school in the Pilbara). Enrollments are significantly higher than last year. The year 7’s have begun their high school journey full of enthusiasm and optimism and have settled into classroom routines very quickly. All other students have also made positive starts and teachers are really pleased with their attitude and the school tone in general. School uniform compliance and bringing the “toolkit for success” kit with them every day adds to the school’s commitment to develop a “culture of success” across the whole campus.

The Hedland attendance strategy is having a big and positive impact on our attendance rates. I want to acknowledge and thank the local police team, CPFS staff and our local Education Department attendance officers for their contributions to this initiative. If young people are not at school, they will be quickly assisted to turn up and get on with their education.

The Clontarf Academy team have also had a big impact in the first week of school. It is really encouraging to see the enthusiastic response to the Clontarf team from so many students and I look forward to this program becoming an integral part of our school’s educational package. Similarly, the new Follow the Dream coordinator, Simon Thompson, is connecting well with students and this program will link neatly with our other strategies to deliver better outcomes for our students.

There is a lot to be pleased about at Hedland Senior High School as we begin 2019. I look forward to catching up with parents and carers as the year progresses. Please remember that you can contact the school whenever you have any issues or concerns – we believe a strong partnership between school and home is the cornerstone to ensuring each student’s success at school.

While others have been relaxing and adventuring over the summer school holidays the Hedland Senior High School Robotics Club, Pilbara Protons, have been hard at work eagerly preparing for their upcoming competition in Sydney later this term.

For three straight weeks the students participated in workshops and fundraising activities. Their robot has now been designed and built according to the FIRST Robotics guidelines and almost all funds have been raised.

The club has been lucky enough to receive donations of tools and materials from Pilbara Tools and Fasteners as well as a custom made shipping crate from Indigo Cabinets. We’re all so grateful for the generosity of our Hedland community helping us to provide unique experiences for our students.

With only a few weeks to go now, the club is finishing off the final components of their robot and undertaking final fundraising activities for the trip.

The students will compete at Macquarie University in Sydney on March 19. For more information on how to help the club contact Robotics Coordinator on [email protected].

As a parent and guardian, you play a vital role in your child’s learning. Building a positive relationship between home and school plays an important part in the education of your child. Effective communication is the key to success of this relationship. Hedland Senior High School is committed to responding promptly and helpfully to your enquiries, concerns, suggestions and feedback.

At Hedland Senior High School we have a subschool structure aimed at streamlining this communication and ensuring students and their families are gaining the most

relevant information and opportunities available.

For most issues and opportunities, the first point of contact for students and their families is their teacher. From there they can see the Year Coordinator, Student Services Manager and relevant Deputy.

We encourage parents and students to follow this process, showed in the flow chart below. Alternatively, parents and guardians are free to call the school directly if they’re unsure who to direct their query or concern to on 9172 8000.

CHARGES AND CONTRIBUTIONS

Hedland Senior High School would like to thank BHP for their generous donation of Personal Protective Equipment.

As part of the new “BHP PPE Donation Initiative” staff at BHP donated a number of their high vis shirts and pants for students in need. From Work Placement, Work Experience and everything in between, students who are unable to acquire PPE will still be able to participate in opportunities thanks to this donation.

The initiative will see BHP donate PPE to a number of organisations and agencies in need of second hand uniforms for people in need.

We thank BHP for their generosity and continual support of our students at Hedland Senior High School.

We would also like to let people know if they too have second hand uniforms or PPE they would like to donate to Hedland Senior High School please contact us on 9172 8000.

SPECIALIST ARTS PROGRAM

SCHOOL BALL 2019

Hedland Senior High School78 Hamilton Road, South Hedland WA 6722T 08 9172 8000 E [email protected] www.hedlandshs.wa.edu.au

Hedland Senior High School’s Specialist Arts Program has opened it’s applications for 2019.

Hedland Senior High School is the only school that offers this kind of program outside the Perth metropolitan area. It’s designed to extend talents and skills beyond regular curriculum and classroom projects.

In 2019 students will see some structural and operational changes to the Specialist Arts Program, with the overarching goal to grow the program to become much more than an fun extra-curricula activity. The program also aims to provide more industry relevant opportunities for students interested in Dance, Drama, Singing, Music, Media, Photography and Visual Arts. Students will have opportunities for disciplinary focus to further develop their talents in the areas they are truly passionate about.

Specialist Arts classes will take place after school on Monday and Tuesday afternoons from 2.30 – 4.00pm. Students will have the option to participate in the Performance

and/or Production workshops with the opportunity to attend one afternoon a week (or both afternoons) depending on their interests across Arts disciplines.

Students interested in participating in the Specialist Arts Program for 2019 will be required to complete an application. All students will need to complete an application, regardless of whether they have previously been involved in the program or not. Applications are open for students in Years 6-12 in 2019.

Please be aware that engagement in the Specialist Arts Program is an extension for students and will therefore incur an additional cost of $150 per year or $75 per semester to cover the cost of materials and resources.

Applications must be returned to the Hedland Senior High School administration by Friday the 15th of February, 2019. Late applications will not be accepted.

Applications can be found at hedlandshs.wa.edu au.
