Common Core State Standards Engaging in a mathematics curriculum that supports the development of “Persevering Problem Solvers” requires a balance between exploring current topics that create intrigue and developing accurate and efficient skills. We invite you to view the video at http://www.ted.com/talks/dan_meyer_math_curriculum_makeover.html This will provide insight to some of the changes happening in the transition to the Common Core State Standards. Additional information about CCSS can also be reviewed at http://www.corestandards.org/the-standards/mathematics. As always you are welcome to contact your child’s teacher for more detail about a successful year in math.

Need Homework? - Simply email Teachers from Power School When you are going on vacation, it is the students’ responsibility to get homework in advance by using a Pre-Arranged Absence Sheet found online or in the main office.

If your child is ill and unable to make it to school, you may go into your Power School account (student or parent) and click on any teacher to email them if you are concerned about what the student is missing. Students can also very easily email them from their high school google email account. If necessary, you can ask the teachers to bring homework to the office for pick up.

WORLD LANGUAGE STAFF

A Look at University Retro Active Credits Last month, we looked at world language admission requirements at

colleges and universities. This month, we will look at retroactive credits.

Retroactive credits are free credits students may earn by taking an upper

level and earning a grade of B or better. The student earns retro-active

credits for all the lower classes skipped over. For example, a common

layout for university world language classes is: 101, 102, 201, 202, and

303. If a student is placed into a 201 course and earns a B, that student

could receive retroactive credits for 101 and 102. With each class worth

four credits, the student would have earned a total of twelve credits. The

best part, the student only has to pay for the credits from the class s/he

took. This way, the student earned eight free credits!

There is a process which students must follow to determine in which

class they should be placed. When admitted to a University of Wisconsin

system school, students take an entrance exam in math, English, and

world language. From this exam, the university decides which world

language class is a best fit. Students may opt out to take a lower level

class than which is being recommended by the university, but the UW

program has a history of successful student placement.

The economic benefit of long-term world language study can amount to

one semester of free tuition. For example, according to the UW-La

Crosse website, one semester tuition for a Wisconsin resident is $4,629.

If an average student takes fifteen credits per semester, the breakdown

cost per credit is $308 dollars. Now take into account a student placed

into the highest level of world language study (301). After a semester of

study at level 301 and earning a B or higher grade, the student would

earn 12 retroactive credits for the classes skipped. The math is simple, 12

credits at $308 each equals $3,703 dollars of free credits.

There is no guarantee for placing in the highest level of a world language

course in college that why we recommend students take four classes of

world language at Onalaska High School to ensure the best placement.

FACT CHECK

MYTH: You can’t learn two languages at the same time. If you do, you’ll end up getting confused, messed up, and fail horribly. REALITY: Who on Earth says you can’t learn many languages simultaneously? Many people have already proven this wrong. If you can learn Physics while learning Biology or History while Geography, then you can learn French while learning Spanish. It can be a huge mental workout to switch languages on a daily basis. The real answer is yes, oui, si.

ACT Prep Course Options

Preparing for the ACT can increase test scores to gain entry into the college of your choice and receive scholarships.

There are several options that are available each year which can help students prepare for this test.

1. All juniors took the FREE practice ACT test on September 21. This retired ACT test was administered and

timed identically to an actual ACT. Students received their sub scores, a composite score and most

importantly an itemized list of correct answers compared to the student answers. Students should use the

test book they received back with their results to see the questions they answered correctly and identify

content they need to review.

2. There are FREE resources located in the Student Services office, such as practice tests, which can be scored

and timed by the student. Several FREE resources are also available online at sites such as ACT.org,

march2success.com https://academy.act.org/ and https://resources.opened.com/okact/ for interactive ACT

tutorials and activities. Every junior at OHS will also participate in a FREE two-day ACT prep program on

February 5 and 12, 2019.

3. UW-L’s Continuing Education office offers a twice-annual ACT prep course. Students will learn test-taking

strategies, receive instruction in each of the four testing areas, and take a retired pre- and post-ACT test.

Writing strategies to assist you in the essay part of the ACT test will also be provided. This course runs for 7

Saturday mornings in January – February OR February – March. This class includes a pre-and post-test. An

online course is also available. The cost of the ACT prep course is $195.

For more information or to register call 608-785-6504 or visit https://www.uwlax.edu/conted/test-prep/act/.

Career & Technical Education

Child Development Courses—Family and Consumer Ed.

Onalaska High School offers several dual credit courses in Family and Consumer Education (FCE) designed for students who are interested in learning more about child development. The Infant and Toddler Development course curriculum focuses on topics related to newborns through age three. Students will learn about conception, prenatal care, and childbirth. Using a hands-on approach, students will also learn parenting roles and responsibilities. Students will study the development of children during their first three years as well as some abuse and neglect issues such as CPS and Shaken Baby Syndrome.

As a follow-up to Infant and Toddler Development, the Child Development course focuses on children ages three through eight. OHS students interested in a career working with children will want to enroll in this class. As a member of this course, students will examine child development within the context of early childhood education settings. Students will be involved in planning lessons as well as implementing a day care for children of OHS staff members.

Business of the Month – YWCA

The YWCA Child Center is a year-round, full-service child care program that also serves as a four-year-old kindergarten site for the School District of La Crosse. The Center also provides a lab school environment for Western Technical College's Early Childhood Education program. The Child Center is one of only three in La Crosse County Young Star five-star rated child care agencies open to the public serving infants from six weeks old. Research shows that children learn best through play and the YWCA Child Center strives to provide children with the opportunity to make choices and decisions about play throughout their day. We hire professionally qualified teachers and assistant teachers for the Center. An education in Early Childhood Education is preferred but we also train staff as needed. For more information check out our website at www.ywcalax.org. Look for more information about the YWCA in the OHS Commons in later February, and sign up to eat lunch with employees from the YWCA Child Care Center to learn more about their job opportunities. See Mrs. Gamoke or Mrs. Frana for details.

Happy CTE Month!

Eligible for Free or Reduced Lunch? Any student who has participated in, or has younger siblings participating in, the free or reduced lunch program should reapply each year, even if they do not eat in the school cafeteria. Many opportunities are available to students participating in this program such as fee waivers for tests, like the ACT, and scholarship/grant programs. OHS counselors often inform students of these opportunities, but only know who is eligible based on this program. Applications for the School District of Onalaska’s Free and Reduced Lunch Program are available in the Main Office. Names of

students participating in this program are kept confidential.

Class of 2019 - SENIORS: Still Time to Apply to College!

Seniors are encouraged to complete and submit their applications to colleges and universities as soon as

possible. Many colleges and universities will be closing their admissions process in the coming

months. Technical college programs, especially, fill quickly on a first come first serve basis. Seniors considering

applying to college for the fall of 2019 who still need help with the process should stop in to see their counselor

today!

Application Process:

Once a student has completed their application, he or she should:

1. Request a transcript in person in OHS Student Services. Transcript request fee: $1.00

2. Include letters of recommendation, if necessary. (Most schools do NOT require letters of recommendation.)

3. Include check for application fee unless paid online (no cash please).

4. Give all materials directly to Mrs. de Boer in Student Services to ensure that your application is complete.

5. If required bring completed application or counselor sheet from application to Student Services.

6. Applications completed using online programs like the Common Application or Send Edu will request a high

school counselor’s email address. Transcripts for these applications are sent directly to colleges using these

programs and do not require students to pay or make transcript requests in person.

Student Services will complete requested information and all application materials will be mailed out in a

timely manner.
