A Message from your Exalter Ruler… Greetings to all Members of the Westbrook Lodge #1784 The winter season came upon us so quickly. We had great December and January. On December 1st we had our annual Elks Memorial Service to remember all our Brothers and Sisters who passed during 2019. Our Chaplin Marilou Clayton did an outstanding job conducting the touching ceremony. Laurie Davis and her team of Elves made our Children’s Christmas Party a great success. Our Adult Christmas celebration was attended by many; it was chance for our members to get reacquainted and
catch up on good times. The entertainment for both parties was provided and donated by Bear Sounds! New Year’s Eve was another big hit to a sold-out crowd. Chef Paul and his Staff prepared and delivered a fantastic dinner. We started the first day off in the New Year with our Bloody Mary/Mimosa Party that was well supported. January ended with Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin rocking the house. February will start off with “Super Bowl Sunday Bingo” on the 2nd with great prizes; followed by our annual SUPER BOWL PARTY. The game will be broadcast on the big screen in the Main Hall. February 11th Lodge Meeting: we will have Nomination of Officers for 2020-2021. Voting of Officers will take place at the Lodge meeting on February 25th. Chef Paul has a special Valentine’s Day menu planned for Dinner by the Sea on February 14th and 15th. Upcoming for February: • Feb. 2nd Super Bowl Bingo • Feb. 2nd Super Bowl Game • Feb. 14th and 15th Valentine’s Day Dinner by the Sea Menu Available • Feb. 11th Nomination of Officers for 2020-2021 • Feb. 25th Election of Officers We have re-energized our Suggestion Box! It is in our Member’s Lounge, near our sign-in book. In closing: As always, please consider joining one of our teams! Volunteers are always needed and welcome, so please don’t hesitate to get involved, this is your Lodge. May God Bless You and Our Lodge! Fraternally, Ray Smith Exalted Ruler Ray

Veteran’s Corner
Great News for the start of 2020! We have applied for and received a $2,000 Spotlight Grant from the ENF! The money will be utilized to assist veterans who are overcoming homelessness. Partnering with the Columbus House we will allocate 100% of the $2,000.00 to purchase household items to support veterans through the Welcome Home Project. Initial purchases will commence on February 1, 2020. We are very grateful to have received this funding and express our appreciation to the ENF.
Our Veteran Committee members have distributed over two hundred cases of cookies to facilities serving veterans throughout the State of Connecticut. We are thankful to the Girl Scouts of Connecticut for donating thousands of cases yearly for distribution among our Connecticut military men and women.
Five of our committee members participated in a military funeral on Jan. 3rd and 4th. We offered our condolences to the family and continue to honor our departed veteran for his service. Save the Date! March 14th will be our next Westbrook Elks Lodge Veterans Luncheon. Additional event information will be shared in early February.
The Elks Veteran Committee is dedicated to serving our veterans; If you are interested in learning more about our committee, or assisting with our next event, please contact Jenell at [email protected] or 860.301.9173.
Respectfully submitted by, Ivette Garcia-Linares
In 2019-2020, the Elks National Foundation will award $4.1 million in college scholarships, ensuring
a bright future for our nation’s youth. Each Legacy Awards recipient will receive a $4,000 scholarship distributed over the course of their college career. Legacy Awards scholars are required to serve with the Elks once per year. Legacy scholars can get involved by rebounding at a Hoop Shoot contest, assisting with Lodge-run projects or Community Investments Program grant projects. The chances for Legacy scholars to serve with their community and learn about the Elks are endless. For more information about our scholarship programs, and for ways Lodges can get involved with Elks scholars, visit elks.org/scholars.
