As a community in the model of Christ, we warmly welcome all who have come seeking God in worship at Our Redeemer’s Lutheran Church. We welcome people of every race, gender, ethnic background, social status, physical ability, sexual orientation, and gender identity. Together in our diversity and as a Reconciling in Christ congregation, we seek to embrace the love of God offered to us in Jesus Christ. We gather to experience the presence of God in Word and Sacrament and to give praise to God who loves us unconditionally.

WELCOME

GATHER

Blessed be the holy Trinity, + one God,who looks upon us in compassion, forgives our sin,and heals our lives.Amen.

Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another.

Have mercy, O God,against you, you alone,we have sinned. In your compassion, cleanse us from our sinand take away our guilt.Create in us a new heartand give us a steadfast spirit.Do not cast us away, but fill us with your Holy Spiritand restore your joy within us.Amen.

As tender as parent to child,so deep is God’s compassion for you.As high as heaven is above earth,so vast is God’s love for you.As far as east is from west,so far God removes your sin from you, renewing your life through Jesus Christ.Blessed be God who crowns uswith mercy and love.Blessed be God forever.

WORD

*GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

*FIRST READING Genesis 9:8-17

Listen for the word of God. Our ears and hearts are open.

8God said to Noah and to his sons with him, 9“As for me, I am establishing my covenant with you and your descendants after you, 10and with every living creature that is with you, the birds, the domestic animals, and every animal of the earth with you, as many as came out of the ark. 11I establish my covenant with you, that never again shall all flesh be cut off by the waters of a flood, and never again shall there be a flood to destroy the earth.” 12God said, “This is the sign of the covenant that I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for all future generations: 13I have set my bow in the clouds, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and the earth. 14When I bring clouds over the earth and the bow is seen in the clouds, 15I will remember my covenant that is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh; and the waters shall never again become a flood to destroy all flesh. 16When the bow is in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is on the earth.” 17God said to Noah, “This is the sign of the covenant that I have established between me and all flesh that is on the earth.”

For the word of God in scripture, for the word of God among us, for the word of God within us, Thanks be to God.

THE GOSPEL Mark 1:9-15

The holy Gospel according to Mark, chapter 1. Glory to you, O Lord.

9In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. 10And just as he was coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens torn apart and the Spirit descending like a dove on him. 11And a voice came from heaven, “You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased.”

12And the Spirit immediately drove him out into the wilderness. 13He was in the wilderness forty days, tempted by Satan; and he was with the wild beasts; and the angels waited on him.

14Now after John was arrested, Jesus came to Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God, 15and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near; repent, and believe in the good news.”

The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ.

SONG OF THE DAY "When We Are Tested" (tune: "Be Thou My Vision")

When we are tested and wrestle alone, famished for bread when the world offers stone, nourish us, God, by your word and your way, food that sustains us by night and by day.

When in the desert we cry for relief, pleading for paths marked by certain belief, lift us to love you beyond sign and test, trusting your presence, our only true rest.

When we are tempted to barter our souls, trading the truth for the pow’r to control, teach us to worship and praise only you, seeking your will in the work that we do.

When we have struggled and searched through the night, sorting and sifting the wrong from the right,Savior, surround us with circles of care, angels of healing, of hope, and of prayer.

9

*PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE

After the words, “For what else do the people of God pray?”, the Assisting Minister will offer the prayers that the congregation has brought forward.

We cry to you for help, O God, praying for the church, the world, and all those who arein need.

A brief silence.

We pray for the church in this season of Lent; for our denomination and our full-communion partners; for our congregation and other congregations in our community. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

We pray for the wild beasts, the birds, the domestic animals, and every living creature; for the wilderness areas on this continent; for rain, enough but not too much. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

We pray for those countries, cities, and villages that have been ravaged by floods; for those who provide leadership in times of chaos; for disaster relief workers and aid organizations. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

We pray for people in prison; for those who live in long-term care facilities; for the homeless, the sick; for the dying, and those who will die today. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

We pray for this community; for single people; for married couples, and those who are divorced; for widows and widowers; for children and youth; for those who come here in need of good news. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

For what else do the people of God pray?

We thank you for the everlasting covenant you have made with all flesh, and we remember our ancestors and loved ones, who know the fulfillment of your promises. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Now is the acceptable time to offer our prayers to you, God of grace and truth. Receive them in your mercy, and grant us all that we need, in Jesus' name.Amen.

May the peace of the Lord be with you always. And also with you.

*GREAT THANKSGIVING

The Lord be with you.And also with you.Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the Lord.Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.It is right to give God thanks and praise.

Holy God, mighty and merciful, your people praise you, saying:Your mercy endures forever.Your mercy endures forever. By your promiseyou bound yourself to earth and all its creatures, granting them life and calling them to flourish, setting the sign of your bow in the clouds, the colors of your love and faithfulness.Your mercy endures forever.Your mercy endures forever.

By your promiseyou bound yourself to your people of old, blessing them with family outnumbering the starsand calling them to be a blessing to others, showing them steadfast love in every generationand calling them to be a light to the nations.Your mercy endures forever.Your mercy endures forever. By your promiseyou joined us to Jesus, your Beloved, grafting us into your living Vine, and calling us to bear the fruit of your self-giving love. In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks;broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying:Take and eat; this is my body, given for you.Do this for the remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying:This cup is the new covenant relationship in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin.Do this for the remembrance of me. With this bread and cupwe remember his life laid down and lifted upas we proclaim the mystery of faith.Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. Send your Holy Spirit upon usand these gifts of bread and wine.Bless us to be a blessing.Make us a sign of your faithfulness.Send us to tend and cherish the earthand to serve the world with mercy and love. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen.

An Invitation to Lent:

Teach Us

to Pray

We aren’t alone! The 40 days of Lent call us to make ourselves available to God, through repentance, prayer, sacrificial giving, and acts of love. Why? Because we are created for oneness with God, to love one another and to live in harmony with creation...and that takes intention, practice, and belonging to a community moving together in that same counter-cultural direction. Join in. Make use of your emptier calendar during the pandemic. Experience the difference Lenten practices can make.

We invite you to take part in “The Journey”. • Get acquainted with members and ministries that make up Our Redeemer’s. • Learn how Our Redeemer’s’ understanding of God and the Bible may or may not be

what you’re familiar with. • Ask questions and share experiences and figure out where you’d like to be involved. • Spend time with God’s vision for Our Redeemer’s’ future: What’s planned? What’s

still being shaped? • Start to feel more like you belong. Let Pastor Kathy ([email protected]) or Pastor Gretchen (pastor.gretchen@ ourredeemers.net) know, if you’d like to be a part of the Journey or if you have any questions.

his instructive prayer by orienting the disciples to the creative origin of all life and blessedness, the Father in heaven.

• MMaarrcchh 11:: “Thy Kingdom Come, Thy Will Be Done, on Earth as It Is in Heaven.” The disciples are to prayer for God’s heavenly authority and power to come to earth.

• MMaarrcchh 88:: “Give Us This Day Our Daily Bread.” Moving downward to the very nitty gritty of human existence, the prayer recognizes God as the source of earthly, embodied, existence.

• MMaarrcchh 1155:: “Forgive Us Our Debts as We Forgive Our Debtors.” Human beings cannot live by bread alone but by the Word of God taking root deeply within our spirits where ongoing forgiveness is essential.

• MMaarrcchh 2222:: “Lead Us Not into Temptation but Deliver Us from Evil.” The prayer moves down deeper into the place where the issues of life come up again and again.

• MMaarrcchh 2299:: “For Thine is the Kingdom, the Power and the Glory Forever, Amen.” This phrase was probably added to the prayer to make it suitable to formal worship. But we might also understand this phrase in light of Irenaeus’ wonderful phrase: The glory of God is humanity fully alive.”
