PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT (PWD) /

JABATAN KERJA RAYA (JKR)

JKR was established in 1882 during the Rajah Brooke era.

Since its establishment, JKR hasbeen entrusted with the rolesand responsibilities in roadconstruction (MRCUs), bridges,wharves, jetties, river walls,airfields, water supply andbuildings.

From 1980s, the roles of JKR haveprogressively changed from being a“Builder” to a “Manager”.

However, in 2015 JKR is no longertasked to look after water supply inrural areas. This is undertaken by anew water authority, JabatanBekalan Air Luar Bandar (JBALB).This authority is under the purviewof the Ministry of Utilities (MOU)Sarawak.

BUOYS AND LIGHTS BOARD

The Buoys and Lights Boardwas established on 12th

January 1961 under regulation4 of the Merchant Shipping(Buoys and Lights) Regulation1961.

Main functions:a. Care of all lighthouses in

Sarawak;b. Aids to Navigation, e.g.,

lighthouses, buoys, beacons,navigation radio services andso on; and

c. Hydrographic surveys.The Chairman is the PermanentSecretary, MIPD. Theimplementing agency is theMarine Department.

BROOKE DOCKYARD AND ENGINEERING

WORKS CORPORATION (BDEWC)

BDEWC was set up in 1912 aspart of the government’sworkshop for repairs ofgovernment vessels andmachinery as well as privatevessels.

In 1996, BDEWC re-aligned itscore business to oil and gasfabrications.

BDEW is now the No. 1 player inthe oil and gas modulesfabrication in East Malaysia.

BDEW became a statutory bodyon 1st August 1977.

KUCHING PORT AUTHORITIES (KPA)

KPA was established on 1st May 1961 under the Port Authorities

Ordinance,1961.

KPA operates two terminals, namely: Pending Terminals (capacity of

2.9 million tons) and Senari Terminal (capacity of 7.0 million tons).

Total capacity of throughput is at 9.9 million tonnes.

KPA has 2 “Approved Port Operators”:

-(1) IOT - Senari Synergy Sdn Bhd (ASSAR); and

-(2) Tebedu Inland Port.

RAJANG PORT AUTHORITY (RPA)

RPA was established under the Port Authorities Ordinance,

1961 on 1st November 1970 and commenced operations on

17th May 1971. It handles cargo bound for the Central

Region of Sarawak and its hinterland.

RPA has a design capacity of 3.3 million tonnes throughput.

MIRI PORT AUTHORITY (MPA)

MPA was established under the provision of the Port Authorities

Ordinance, 1961 on 1st February 1981 and commenced

operations on 1st March, 1983.

MPA was relocated from the old port site in Miri Town to

Kuala Baram in July 1998.

MPA was designed with 3.5 million tons of annual cargo

throughput.

TANJUNG MANIS PORT AUTHORITY (TMPA)

TMPA was established under the provision of the Port Authorities

Ordinance, 1961 on 19th April 2012 and commenced operations on

2nd January 2014.

TMPA was designed with 3.3 million tons of annual cargo throughput

capacity.

The establishment of TMPA was designed specially to regulate port

activities in Tanjung Manis through its approved port operator, Tanjung

Manis Integrated Port Sdn. Bhd. (TMP).

TMPA is to serve as a planning and coordinating agency for the

development of infrastructure and port facilities in accordance with the

State’s development plan in Tanjung Manis.

SAMALAJU PORT AUTHORITY (LPS)

LPS was established under the provision of the Port Authorities

Ordinance, 1961 on 7th October 2010 and commenced operations

on 22nd April 2014. The interim port facility was completed on

31st May 2014. The port is now completed in May 2017.

LPS was designed with 14 million tons of annual cargo

throughput.

Jalan alternatif atau jalan pintas yang dicadangkan dari Lawas dan

Limbang ke Miri yang tidak melalui Negara Brunei Darussalam

adalah merupakan jalan tambahan kepada Lebuhraya Pan Borneo.

Jalan alternatif ini akan membuka lebih banyak kawasan untuk

kegiatan ekonomi, terutamanya untuk pembangunan pertanian dan

pelancongan.

Jalan Raya Perhubungan Miri - Limbang - Lawas

Memperbaiki dan membina jalan di sepanjang kawasan

keselamatan sempadan akan membantu menghubungkan

masyarakat luar bandar, meningkatkan dan mempromosi

industri pelancongan serta membuka beberapa industri

pertanian sederhana kecil.

Mendalamkan 8m di bawah saluran akses drauf datum carta (semasa 0.7m - 3.0m

drauf) untuk membolehkan kapal sehingga 10,000 DWT masuk berdasarkan justifikasi

berikut:

- Secara teknikal, daya maju komersial serta dapat memastikan keselamatan pelayaran.

- Meningkatkan semula operasi limbungan di Kawasan Perindustrian Kuala Baram

(KBIE).

- Menyokong pertumbuhan dan keperluan industri minyak sawit, minyak dan gas,

pertanian dan perlombongan di wilayah Utara.

Cadangan Kerja Pengerukan Kapital di Kuala Baram, Miri

Inisiatif ini akan menyediakan hubungan antara kawasan luar bandar/penempatan

dengan bandar yang akan membantu mengembangkan kawasan luar

bandar/penempatan dengan bandar, ini akan membangunkan dan mengurangkan

jurang di antara kawasan tersebut.

Seterusnya, kemudahan jalan dan jambatan ini akan memudahkan pembukaan industri

komersial, pertanian dan pelancongan di kawasan luar bandar/kawasan penempatan.

CONCLUSION

❑ To be a developed State by 2030, infrastructural network has to be built

between towns and villages, which will then allow development of various

industries

❑ The vision of Sarawak becoming a developed and high-income State by

2030 can only be realised when it has a Ministry that “Links and Develops”
