l Flooding can be a major concern. Sources of flooding include flash floodingfollowing a heavy rain, ponding related to drainage issues, backwaterflooding and coastal flooding.

l Every resident and business owner in St. John Parish is at some level offlood risk; and flood insurance is available to reduce the financial impact ofa flood. To determine if your property is at risk, visit the Planning & Zoningpage at sjbparish.com.

l While most disasters are covered under a standard homeowner’s policy, flooding is not, and remember, there’s a 30 day waiting period from the dateof purchase before your policy goes into effect. Therefore, NOW is the besttime to buy flood insurance.

l Flood insurance claims are paid even when federal disaster assistance isnot available. You can speak to a licensed insurance agent to get moreinformation.

l Do not return home until Parish is declared safel Do not walk or drive in flooded areasl Do not interfere with rescue and recovery workersl Stay off of the roadsl Use telephone for emergencies onlyl Stay away from loose dangling power linesl Conserve waterl Open windows and doors to ventilate homes
