HOW SINCERE ARE YOU? Just how sincere are you? How honest, how pure, how reliable, how trustworthy are you? Think about those important characteristics and consider the original meaning of the word “sincere.”  Sincere is an old Latin word that meant “without wax.” It origi nated when ancient Romans needed a word to verify that a piece of porcelain or pottery was whole, without cracks or flaws which had been covered over with hot wax. Those wanting “sincere” pieces would hold the object up to the sun to let light shine through them to make certain they were not defective. One suspects that the light of Christ shining through most of us might reveal embarrassing flaws in our character, yet no doubt we would also discover that there was a lot of soundness as well. The goal is to move away from insincerity and hypocrisy and allow Christ to help us become completely whole and sincere. PASTOR’S JONATHON’S WORD OF THE WEEK

The other day, Ray Lewis played his last game inBaltimore’s stadium. After 17 wildly successful years,he’s retiring. At the end of the game, he took off his jersey to reveal a shirt that said, “Psalm 91.” I smiledat that. But deep down in my heart, I thought, “Yeah, but that guy was part of a double homicide.Whatever.” And there it is. I don’t believe in grace. Or,I believe in it for me, and people who have sinned likeme. But there’s a whole lot of people I don’t thinkdeserve grace. The problem is that, when we talkabout grace, we often don’t use one of the mostimportant words to describe it. We say, “Grace ispowerful and free and beautiful and amazing.” But weleave out one of the key descriptions of grace. Thetruth is, grace is offensive. Grace offends in its’generosity. Grace offends in its’ availability. Graceoffends in its’ depth. Grace offends in its’ willingnessto be controlled or own or manipulated. Grace isoffensive, and when I see people who I think don’tdeserve it, I am reminded of ultimately how

desperately I still need it. ---Jon Acuff
