However, the validity of the quote remains. In fact, in our first reading from Isaiah and in our Gospel today, we hear it played out. In both readings, the subject of the call demurs and it is God who qualifies the person. In the case of Isaiah, God calls him to be a prophet. He responds that he is not worthy, that he is a sinful man. God cleans his sin and Isaiah becomes one of the great prophets of the Hebrew people. In the Gospel, Jesus calls Peter as a disciple. He too balks at such a suggestion and claims that he is a sinful man. Jesus encourages Peter (“Do not be afraid”) and Peter soon becomes not only one of the Twelve Apostles, but also a great leader of our Church and our first Pope. As for us, God calls each one of us, every day. First, He calls us all to a vocation – to marriage, religious life, Holy Orders, or single life. These calls can seem daunting at first. We may not feel ready or worthy of such a call. How many brides and grooms have gotten “cold feet” before their wedding? How many young men preparing for ordination or young women preparing to make their religious vows have spent the night before in earnest prayer? As we prepare to accept these great calls, if we listen, we can hear God say to us, “Do not be afraid,” and, perhaps with wobbly knees, we are able to process down the aisle to the altar. As I mentioned in the previous paragraph, God calls us every day. If we enter into our prayer, we will discover that God is asking us to be his hands and his feet, his voice, and his heart in our world today. We may not feel ready; we may believe that we are not worthy, but with a simple touch of God’s hand and the comforting sound of Jesus saying, “Do not be afraid,” I pray that we may all respond as Isaiah did – “Here I am, send me!” - Father Tom Lafreniere We invite all of you who have not registered in our Parish, to stop-by our Parish Office to fill out a Registration Form. THE LORD QUALIFIES THE CALLED

You may have heard the quote, “God does not call the qualified; He qualifies the called.” While this quote is often attributed to Blessed Teresa of Calcutta and others, the author is unknown.

We may not feel ready; we may believe that we are not worthy, but with a simple touch of God’s hand and the comforting sound of Jesus saying, “Do not be afraid,” I pray that we may all respond as Isaiah did – “Here I am, send me!” - Father Tom Lafreniere

PASTOR’S MESSAGE

HOLY DAYS AND HOLY SEASONS: ESPECIALLY IN TIMES OF TRIAL

- Msgr. Michael D. McGraw

Especially in times of international problems and crises, people of faith turn to God for the strength necessary to find answers and solutions. In our world today terrorism, poverty, hunger, disease, and injustice all seem to be intractable with solutions somehow beyond our reach. As members of the great spiritual Traditions of our world, we long for community, common efforts, understanding, dialogue and blessed change. As one effort towards this end, each of the great world spiritual Traditions (Judaism, Christianity and Islam) that trace their origins back to Abraham as a model of faith, have High Holy Days and Holy Seasons: Yamin nora’im, (Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur), Advent and Lent and Ramadan.

Why do we pause during the year to celebrate these sacred days and seasons? We know that a greater than human wisdom is necessary. We know that inner strength and conviction is required for us to marshal the human and economic forces necessary to change our world’s evils. So it is important for us to slow down and become more contemplative at special times like Lent. This is in order to pay attention and honor great formative spiritual events, to discover God’s Will, to re-commit to our beliefs and traditions and to be transformed by the grace of God. Only then can we become agents of the world’s transformation. The world’s transformation depends upon our individual transformations.

This Wednesday we celebrate Ash Wednesday and begin our Holy Season of Lent. We will have the Sign of Cross etched upon our foreheads in ashes from last year’s burnt palms. The Cross of ashes reminds us of the fragility and brevity of life and of our responsibilities to live as faithful disciples of the Lord. The Cross which was a symbol of disgrace and death has been transformed in its meaning and becomes a blessing because it unites us with the death and resurrection of the Lord. So we begin our Lenten journey signed on behalf of the suffering world, with the Cross of our Master and also with Resurrection faith and hope.

Lent has many meanings but one ancient one is that it is a time of purification and preparedness for participation in the Paschal Mystery, the Death and Resurrection of the Lord and all that this miraculous event accomplished--our salvation, the world’s salvation. Throughout our history as Catholics, we have embraced the triad of Lenten spiritual disciplines: fasting, prayer and almsgiving. Here at Saint Joan of Arc it is also a time of stimulating spiritual presentations and of our parish mission.

Finally, it is a good time to make commitments for change that embrace again the Ten Commandments, the Beatitudes and Jesus’ two-fold Law of Love--God and Neighbor. It is also a time to study, pray, commit, and act on behalf of solutions that will bring about individual and social progress. Lent is a time of spiritual progressing and of openness to conversion and to new and marvelous spiritual experiences. May we all set out together in this Holy Season with trust, gratefulness and surrender! The Lord wills for us “fullness of life, holiness and salvation.” We only need to be the world’s clay for the Divine Potter and the world’s fertile ground for the Divine Sower.

CELEBRATING 30 YEARS OF INTERFAITH WITH TEMPLE BETH ELINTERFAITH MASS AT SAINT JOAN OF ARC

TEACHERS’ NIGHT WITH BOTH COMMUNITIES

FROM THE DIRECTOR OF SOCIAL OUTREACH MINISTRIES

Deacon Bill Watzek SJA Director of Social Outreach Ministries

With Lent just around the corner, I am sure that we are all looking for a new or interesting practice that we could engage ourselves in that would make this the best Lent ever. It just so happens that seven families in our parish have participated in a wonderful practice the last four Lenten seasons, that gave them many graces and allowed them not only to grow in their faith together, but to give of themselves for the good of the community. Parishioners, Connie and Craig Hudson have spearheaded a group of families from their neighborhood to participate in a program called “Meager Meals.” During Lent, on every Sunday, the seven families would gather at one of their homes for a shared a meal. The catch was that the cost of the meal could not exceed $2.00 dollars per person. The meals would start with prayer and or a Bible reading that may focus on the readings for that Sunday. One may want to even expand this with a sharing of how the readings of the day struck you or gave you some insight into your faith. To participate in the alms giving spirit of the season each guest offers a minimum donation of $5.00 for the meal which, at the end of the Lenten season, would be donated to the St. Joan of Arc Care Ministry Food Pantry. Combining prayer, table fellowship and a spirit of generosity, it would seem that this type of Lenten practice would be ideal for a group of friends that would like to deepen their Lenten experience in a spirit of community! Whatever form of Lenten practice that you choose to engage in this year, we hope that you have a blessed spiritual experience and that you come closer to Christ throughout this Lenten and Easter season. If you have any questions regarding this beautiful Lenten practice you are welcome to contact Connie Hudson at [email protected]. for more information.

Deacon Brad Reed IV Theology, Diocese of St. Petersburg“I have been assigned to St. Joan of Arc as a seminarian since last January, at which time I was an assistant catechist

for 8th Grade Confirmation prep. Then I was re-assigned to St. Joan’s as an assistant in the RCIA program. I was ordained a transitional deacon for the Diocese of St. Petersburg on December 20th. Now, I am back at St. Joan’s this spring semester serving in my third role: as a deacon! I enjoy being at St. Joan of Arc because it is a large parish with a very diverse group of parishioners and a wide array of ministries. I have found the people of St. Joan’s to be friendly and welcoming, and I look forward to concluding my time as a seminarian at the parish. From my experience at St. Joan’s, I have learned the value of unity in diversity, collaboration, and charity.”

Seminarian Troy Fulford I Theology, Diocese of Pensacola-Tallahassee“Hello, my name is Troy Fulford and I am a seminarian at St. Vincent de Paul.

This year I have had the honor of teaching confirmation this school year at St. Joan of Arc. I cannot express the joy this class has brought my life. The realness in how they dialogue with me and engage the material has probably been what I have enjoyed the most. While I am certain the kids must get tired of hearing me talk and teach, and I don’t blame them, what I have been truly grateful for is how much I have learned from them in the process. I am truly thankful to the St. Joan of Arc community for this opportunity and for the amazing experience I have had and will have the rest of this year.”

Deacon David Keegan IV Theology, Diocese of St. Augustine“I’m currently in my second year at St. Joan of Arc. Last year I had the

privilege of working with the RCIA program along with Sr. Vivian. Being here in this amazingly vibrant parish has been a true blessing for me. I am learning so much about parish life and ministry. I really am enjoying getting to know the wonderful people here and am constantly humbled by how open and welcoming you all are. I truly feel that I am being well-formed for my future ministry as a priest for the Diocese of St. Augustine.”

Seminarian Christopher Knight I Theology, Diocese of St. Augustine“Assigned to teach in the Religious Education Department has been a

blessing for me this year for several reasons. First and foremost, it gives me the opportunity to engage in the parish life, reminding me of my vocation to serve the people of God. Second, having to teach 5th and 6th grade challenges me to really understand what I am learning everyday here in the classroom. These kids have great questions keeping me on my A game. Most of all my time at St. Joan of Arc has given me an opportunity to grow, to be part of a community different than where I grew up and I am very thankful for this chance.”

Recently St. Joan of Arc has received a new Deacon in training. Deacon Bradley Reed, will join Deacon David Keegan in helping out in our parish as they prepare for their priesthood ordination. We also have two other seminarians serving in Religious Education as Catechists. We are currently

hosting men in formation from four of the seven dioceses that form the Miami Province.

Let’s keep them in our prayers as we get to know them and help them in their journey of faith.

STEP 1 Gather your information about your assets, including retirement funds, bank accounts and real property.

STEP 2 Choose the type of bequest you’d like to make.1. Unrestricted bequest. This is a donation to be used for St. Joan of Arc general funds. This donation would be used where it is most needed.2. Restricted bequest. This donation specifies how the money is to be used. (This could be restricted to go into the endowment, a specific ministry, or the building fund.)A bequest can be made in a number of ways:• A specific dollar amount.• Specific assets, such as securities, real estate, or tangible property.• Retirement account assets, consisting of any benefits remaining in your retirement plan.• A residuary bequest, St. Joan of Arc receives all or a percentage of your estate after all other obligations are met.• An existing will or trust can be easily amended to include a gift to St. Joan of Arc without rewriting the entire document. Your attorney can prepare a simple document, called a codicil, which adds a new bequest while reaffirming the terms of your will. Similarly, an attorney can prepare an amendment to a revocable trust to add St. Joan of Arc.

STEP 3 Meet with your estate planning attorney. If you need to create a will or just update your existing document, you’ll want to get advice from your estate planning attorney.

An attorney can advise you as to the best way to structure your will in order to take care of your loved ones first and then your charitable interests while assuring the best tax benefits.

As a charitable, not-for-profit all bequests to St. Joan of Arc are fully deductible for estate tax purposes.

STEP 4 Contact us.We acknowledge and welcome donors into our Arc Angel Society. Members are invited to special member events and receive special mailings. (We also recognize and respect the wishes of anyone that wishes to remain anonymous.)

Please contact Wendy Horton in the Development Office at (561) 952-2838 or [email protected].

DIRECTOR MINISTERIO:Constanza Preble [email protected]
