We all know it and the readings we have for this weekend are about this very fact. In the early years of the Church it was thought that the second coming of Jesus was going to be very soon, that Christ would return within their lifetimes, therefore Paul writes about those who have already “fallen asleep” and those “who are left until the coming of the Lord.” The end will surely come for each and every one of us, some sooner and some later. We do not know “the day nor the hour.” The Gospel message is very clear for us, even in the form of a parable, that some of us will be ready as the wise virgins were and some of us will not be ready as the foolish virgins were. This being so, what steps might we take to ensure that we have the “extra oil’ for our “lamps” when the Lord comes for us? It is interesting to note that oils are used in four of the seven sacraments of the Church, with no less than 2 oils used in Baptism alone, our first sacrament of initiation. In pointing to the sacraments we see, as Catholics, an important connection between ourselves and God. What better way to be ready to “meet our Maker” than participating in the gifts that He has given us in order to stay close to Him during our time on Earth? Being faithful to the Mass so that we can receive our Lord weekly in Communion and not just when it is convenient for us, even if it takes a great effort, demonstrates our love of God and enriches our souls with grace. Becoming regular attendees of the sacrament of Penance, not obsessively but regularly, helps us to reorder our lives in a way that moves ourselves away from our sins and toward God. Having regular prayer lives, communicating ourselves with God and being attentive to His responses is another way to ensure we are keeping our lives on the right track. In short, keeping ourselves close to God here on Earth is a very good way to ensure that we will be with Him in eternity. Amen. - Deacon Bill Watzek

PASTOR’S MESSAGE

Each year, on November 11, we celebrate Veterans Day as a National Holiday.

The celebration grew out of the Armistice Day memorial that marked the end of World War I, on November 11, 1918. President Dwight Eisenhower, in 1954, proclaimed Veterans Day a day of remembrance of all who served in the armed services and as a complementary remembrance to Memorial Day, which specifically honors all those who died in military service. Every year, at 11:00am on November 11, at the Tomb of the Unknowns in Washington, a color guard representing all of the military services executes “Present Arms” and the presidential wreath is laid upon the tomb to the sound of taps.

As is the case with all memorials, it is important to keep reminding ourselves why we are celebrating. In the case of Memorial Day, we are remembering and honoring the bravery and courage of all veterans who in wartime and peacetime risked their lives in defense of our country and our ideals and values. I think that President Eisenhower expressed the meaning of this Veterans Day very powerfully when he wrote:

...”it is well for us to pause, to acknowledge our debt to those who paid so large a share of freedom’s price. As we stand here in grateful remembrance of the veteran’s contributions we renew our conviction of individual responsibility to live in ways that support the eternal truths upon which our Nation is founded, and from which flows all its strength and all its greatness.”

Today we are perhaps more aware than at any recent time of the cost carried by the veterans of our country and their families. We read of the many problems with re-entry into civilian life, of health problems, financial problems and family stress. There are also accounts of veterans feeling unappreciated, misunderstood and disrespected. There are also the well-documented examples of inadequate healthcare and benefits never received.

As people of faith and compassion, it seems to me that we have an important responsibility to live our American ideals and values in such way as to insure the strength of our Republic and its role in the world. Our veterans have shown us the way in the past. Soldiers today are responding to terrorism, health epidemics, tyranny, and threats to peace in a similar courageous way. We owe them our support and prayers.

I also encourage us to get behind our Knights of Columbus and their supportive activities for the care for veterans in our community.

FROM THE SJA MARRIAGE MINISTRY DIRECTOR

Rosario Gonzales SJA Marriage Ministry Director

FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION

1) What is cohabitation? Cohabitation means living together in a sexual relationship when not married.

2) What reasons do people express for living together? For some, living together was seen, at least initially, as simply a way of spending more time together. There was little prior discussion about the possibility of marriage. For others, living together was seen, from the beginning, as a way to test out a serious relationship to see if it was “the right one.” Many people, especially those who have been divorced, or who have experienced divorce in their immediate family, are fearful of making a/another mistake. Others, already engaged, found living together to be more convenient and more economical than living separately.

3) Why do people who are living together choose to get married? There could be many reasons, or a combination of reasons. Some may be deciding that they do now wish to marry, their fears and anxieties about marriage having lessened since they began living together. Some may have had a change of heart about the morality of their situation, or those feelings have become stronger. One partner may have “delivered an ultimatum” to the other, to either marry or to separate. Perhaps also contributing is a desire on the couple’s own part to be more “socially acceptable,” and to receive the support and encouragement for their relationship which is offered to married couples. Perhaps some external factor- a new job which necessitates a move, someone leaving school – has put some pressure on the couple to change their situation.

Living Nativity

On October 27th, the third-grade classes performed their traditional Saints Program. The students researched and dressed up as the Saint of their choosing. They recited a quick line about their Saint and sang a variety of songs, including, "When the Saints Go Marching In." The students also presented the Beatitudes and reminded the audience how they can become Saints.

Pope Francis on Sept. 20 continue his series of audience talks on Christian hope, giving extensive advice on how to teach people, especially youth, to remain full of hope. No matter "where God has planted you, hope." The following is Pope Francis' guide to hope:• Enemy No. 1 is not out there somewhere, but inside oneself. "Don't make room for bitter or dark thoughts."

• Believe in the existence of the most noble and beautiful truts" and trust that God, through the Holy Spirit, is ushering everything toward the good, toward "Christ's embrace."

• Never believe the struggles here on earth are "useless." God never disappoints and he wants that seed he planted in everyone to bloom. "God made us to flower, too."

• "Wherever you are, build!"

• When life gets hard, and "you have fallen, get up. Never stay down. Get up and let people help you to your feet."

• If you're sitting, start walking!" Start the journey. "If you're bored stiff, crush [boredom] with good works."

• "If you feel empty and demoralized, ask if the Holy Spirit may newly replenish" that void.

• Work for peace among people

• Don't listen to those "who spread hatred and division."

• No matter how different people are from one another, human beings "were created to live together. With disputes wait patiently. One day you will discover that a silver of truth has been entrusted to everyone."

• Love people. Respect everyone's journey–whether it be troubled or down the straight and narrow because everyone has a story behind them.

• Every baby born is "the promise of a life that once again shows it is stronger than death."

• "Jesus has given us a light that shines in the darkness; defend it, protect it. This unique light is the greatest richness entrusted to your life."

• Dream of a world still not seen, but that will certainly come one day. Think of those who sailed oceans, scaled mountains, conquered slavery or made life better for people on earth.

• Ask God for courage every day. "Remember, Jesus conquered fear for us" and "not even our most treacherous enemy can do anything against faith."

• If fear or evil looms so large it seems insurmountable, remember "that Jesus loves in you. And through you, it is he, who, with his meekness, wants to subdue all enemies of humanity: sin, hatred, crime and violence."

• Be courageous in speaking the truth, but never forget, "you are not above anyone."

• Hold onto ideals and live for something greater than yourself, even if it comes at a high price.

• "Nothing is more human than making mistakes and these mistakes must not become a prison for you." The son of God came "not for the healthy, but the sick" so people should not be afraid to get up again and start over when they fall, "because God is your friend."

• "If bitterness strikes, firmly believe in all those people who still work for the good; the seed of a new world is in their humility."

• Spend time with people who have kept a child-like heart. "Learn from splendor, nurture amazement."

• "Live, love, believe, and with God's grace, never despair."

FUNDAMENTAL PLANNING By Janel Esker

At first glance, the well-prepared (including me) might take great pride in today’s Gospel. You know who you are—you whose purses contain everything but the kitchen sink, you who stockpile food and fuel just in case “the big one” hits. I rarely leave the house without food, drinks, tissues, and reading materials and am often the one others come to when they’re less than prepared for a long wait, unexpected hunger, or a surprise runny nose. And I’m hardly humble about my planning abilities—it’s perhaps my favorite topic for gloating.

Then how, on a recent weeklong trip, did I forget to pack underwear? My family was shocked that The Planner had forgotten something so basic. No gloating that week!

In gospel times, lamp oil was also a necessity—how would a lamp remain lit without oil? Yet five of the women in the wedding procession left home without it. Did they just forget? Did they think the bridegroom would be on time so there’d be no need for lamps after dark? How did they miss something so fundamental?

We too, in our busy lives, often miss the fundamentals. Fundamental 1: Life is short and we will die—at a time we don’t know. Fundamental 2: Nothing is more important than our relationship with God.

Today’s Gospel challenges us to think about how we’re preparing ourselves for the end of our lives. We prepare wills, trusts, and health-care directives, but how about spiritual preparations? What are we doing to deepen our relationship with God every day? How are we living our Christian faith more concretely on a daily basis? These are the fundamentals. How prepared are we?

WHY DO WE SUFFER? By Michael D. Guinan, OFM

Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria, the Mexican and Haitian earthquakes, the Indian Ocean tsunami. Accidents, terror attacks, disease, and death. Natural disasters and those produced by humans bring with them so much suffering. Ancient literature from Egypt and Mesopotamia attests that even then people called out, “Why?” In the lament psalms of the Bible, the psalmist cries out, “Why, Lord?” Our voices join an age-old chorus!

The problem of suffering is difficult. How can we understand a benevolent, just God in the face of such human experiences?

Perhaps the best biblical example of this struggle is found in the Book of Job. Job suffers the loss of possessions and family and is afflicted with a terrible disease. Friends hear of his plight and come to console him. After Job’s cry of pain, the discussion begins.

Why is Job suffering? One easy answer that surfaces immediately is that Job deserves it; he is suffering because of his sins. When Job rejects this, his friends counter, in effect, “Don’t give us that! All humans are rotten sinners!” For them, all suffering is somehow a punishment for sin. Sad to say, Job’s friends have vocal descendants even now. While it is true that our sinful actions have consequences, as an all-purpose explanation, this one is too simplistic.

PROBLEM OR MYSTERY? Even within the Book of Job, the situation is more complicated. As readers, we know from the start that his friends are wrong. Job is righteous, and his suffering is allowed by God to test his virtue. Other answers also appear in the book. Like any good ancient Near Eastern father, God disciplines us through suffering to make us better (5:17–18, 36:15). Or, suffering is mysterious, so who are we to understand God’s ways? (11:7–10, 15:8–9).

Although these responses may give temporary relief, ultimately they are not satisfactory answers to the meaning of suffering. While we seek understanding, perhaps this is not the best approach to the problem. In fact, maybe the problem with suffering is that it is not really a “problem” at all, but a mystery.

What is the difference? A problem is something “out there.” We can see all the pieces, survey its dimensions. The question is, how do we put it together? How do we solve it? Problems are solved intellectually. A mystery is different. It is a situation in which I am so immersed that I can never get far enough away to see it all “out there.” Love and death are mysteries. So is suffering.

Mysteries involve us on the deepest levels of our relationships with ourselves, others, the natural world, and with God. To be human is to be enmeshed in these relationships. When they grow into greater wholeness (through love) or come apart (through suffering), we are in the presence of mystery. We will never solve the meaning of suffering any more than the meaning of love.

“I AM WITH YOU” At the heart of Christianity is the affirmation that, through the Incarnation, Jesus entered into these relationships too. Jesus fully shared in the human condition. When he faced suffering and death, he also called out, “Why?” His final words from the

A WORD FROM POPE FRANCIS Profit and capital are not a good over and above the human person; they are at the service of the common good. When the common good is used only at the service of profit and capital, this has a name: it is called exclusion, and through it the throwaway culture gets stronger and stronger.

cross were, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” (Mark 15:34). We know that God did not forsake Jesus but raised him to everlasting life.

Nowhere in Scripture do we read, “Have faith in me, and you will understand everything, including suffering!” But we do read, whatever the suffering, “Do not be afraid, for I am with you.” We do not suffer alone. Together, we survive all suffering—even death itself!

(No estaban preparadas).
