These past weeks we have shared with you about our Becoming Disciples Through Stewardship ini a ve. Our parish has so much to offer to those in our community.

We are a beacon of hope for those in need, for those suffering, for those who are hungry, searching, and need our prayers and assistance in a multitude of ways. We are also there for our parish family through the administra on of the sacraments, the celebra on of Mass, and the Holy Eucharist. How blessed we are to be able to serve so many in our parish and community!

We are called by God to con nue to advance our mission and to build up God’s Kingdom here in Phoenix. There are so many more people who need our assistance. There is so much more work to be done. The reality is that we will always need resources to do God’s work. Un l the needy are clothed, the hungry are fed, and the Gospel is spread to the ends of the earth, we will need resources.

Many of you have already submi ed your Commitment Card to the church and have commi ed your offertory support to con nue to advance our parish mission. Thank you! Many of you have not yet submi ed your commitment card. Our goal through this ini a ve is 100% par cipa on from our parish community. Please turn in your Commitment Card this week if you have not already done so. Please pray for our parish. Please become involved in the life of our parish by joining a ministry to help serve those in need. Corpus Chris Catholic Church is a wonderful parish because of YOU and what each one of you make of it!

Thank you for your generosity and your sacrifice. Please feel free to contact the Parish Office with any ques ons you may have. May the Lord con nue to bless us and the work we are doing!

A couple of weeks ago, I, along with 20 Corpus Christi parishioners, Fr. Axline from St. Mary Magdalene in Gilbert, and 20 of his parishioners, returned from a 12-day pilgrimage to Rome and other nearby Catholic sites. I wanted to share some of my highlights from it.

Primarily, we went to support our seminarian, Nathaniel Glenn, as well as Gabriel Terrell from St. Mary Magdalene, and Marvin Soto, as they were ordained transitional deacons for the Diocese of Phoenix in St. Peter’s along with 32 other young men from various dioceses in the United States. Many parishioners said they saw the ordina on on EWTN, and how beau ful it was. For me, one highlight was being in the procession with what seemed like at least 200 other priests from the US – a testament that the Church is in good hands with many young priests and many good seminarians. It was also great to see 10 Phoenix priests there to support the three Phoenix seminarians being ordained – a true witness to the fraternity of our presbyterate. I know that Jeff and Tina Glenn, along with Nathaniel, were greatly honored by the support of the parish, as well as Chuck and Alice Wold and the East Valley Serra Club, and our parishioners who were there in a special way to offer our love, gratitude, and prayerful support.

In the days following the ordina on, seeing and celebra ng Mass in the four major Basilicas of Rome was worth the several miles of walking each day. One highlight in Rome for me, was the Scavi (Excava ons) tour under St. Peter’s Basilica. There we saw remnants of the first Basilica built by Emperor Constan ne in the early 300s. Hearing the story and seeing where they discovered St. Peter’s bones directly under the Altar was a true testament to the history of the Catholic Church and the reality that God really did build His Church upon Peter and nothing shall prevail against it (Mt. 16:18). For those who hadn’t been to Rome before, that tour was quite remarkable. A significant moment for me, personally, was being able to con-celebrate Mass in St. Peter’s on top of Pope John Paul II’s tomb. It was a me of great heart-felt prayer of gra tude. I

also heard many were awe-struck by how beau ful Assisi was, even though we did not have as much

me there as many of us would have liked. A er about a week in Rome, we took a bus to

San Giovanni Rotondo where Padre Pio lived, served, and died. It was an honor for Fr. Chris and I to bless each of our pilgrims with Padre Pio’s cross and a glove that he wore. One aspect of that Church that

stood out to me was all the gold on the walls and ceiling. It wasn’t like the gold in the churches in Rome that had been bought, though. The gold at Padre Pio’s church was from the thousands of pilgrims who would leave gold jewelry and other items in order to show their gratitude for what God had done through Padre Pio. That gold was melted down and then put on the walls and ceiling in a simple but beau ful way (quite the opposite of what Aaron and the Israelites did when they took their gold jewelry, formed the Golden Calf, and started to worship it in Exodus 32).

A few miles outside of San Giovanni Rotondo was St. Michael’s cave. In 492, St. Michael the Archangel appeared to the bishop and said that the Chris an city of Siponto would be saved from the a ack of a nearby pagan city. St. Michael asked that an Altar and Gro o be built in the cave, but that he would not need to bless and dedicate it because St. Michael himself already had. Again in 1656, the local bishop invoked St. Michael’s protec on from the great plague that was happening that year. St. Michael said that anyone who would use the stones of this grotto would be

liberated. I got a stone for myself and Fr. Rey and have started wearing it every day for protection. When pilgrims were flocking to Padre Pio for confession, he asked that they first go and pray in the cave before going to confession. Indeed, St. Michael provides great protection from evil in our lives. Somebody recently asked me why we pray the St. Michael prayer after daily Mass, but not after Sunday Mass (reci ng the St. Michael Prayer a er every Mass was a tradition started by Pope Leo XIII. Vatican II established that it was not required, but not forbidden either.) I told that parishioner that I didn’t know, other than that was the tradi on from before I got here. However, there is no good reason not to pray the St. Michael prayer after every Mass, because after Mass we are sent out into the world to proclaim the Gospel (Good News) of Jesus Christ, and so we need St. Michael’s intercession and protec on from evil to go out into the world. Therefore, I would like to begin praying the St. Michael prayer a er Sunday Masses also, immediately a er the final blessing and before the Recessional song.

About an hour or so from San Giovanni Rotondo is Mugnano, Italy where devotion to St. Philomena began. Although I had heard of St. Philomena, I didn’t know much about her. She was a virgin and martyr in the 1st century, but devo on to her spread in the 1800s. Popes and many saints have all tes fied to Philomena’s powerful intercession. For instance, Padre Pio called her the “Princess

of Heaven” and St. Jean Vianney, the Cure (Healer) of Ars, who had a deep devotion to Philomena, attributed all the miracles in Ars to her.

Another fascina ng highlight was visi ng the Veil of Monopello, Italy. It is the veil that was wrapped over Jesus’ head when He was buried. If you remember, Peter and John saw the burial wrappings of the head in a separate place (Jn 20:7). Many people are familiar with the Shroud of Turin, the burial cloth which depicts the whole body of Jesus. The veil of Monopello (head wrapping) was what was put over the Shroud

(en re head and body wrappings). It gives even more fascina ng features of Jesus’ face, which, with the Shroud, we have a very accurate depic on of what Jesus looked like. One can read on the internet about the fascina ng facts that this Veil reveals to us about Christ’s death, burial, and resurrec on.

Finally, the culmina on of the trip for many of the pilgrims, especially those from Corpus Chris , was Lanciano, Italy, where the first Eucharis c miracle took place and is s ll located. What I found fascina ng was the story of how Lanciano got its name (Lanciano means Lance). The town was originally known as Anxanum, but Longinus, the centurion soldier who thrust the lance into the side of Jesus – piercing Jesus’ heart, from which blood and water gushed forth – was from this town. A er seeing the events of what happened to Jesus, Longinus converted to Chris anity (Catholicism). So, the same hometown of the soldier who thrust the lance into Jesus’ heart is the same town in which the heart of Jesus is first realized in the First Eucharis c Miracle. In the year 700, a priest was having a crisis in his voca on and was doub ng the Real Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist. While he was celebra ng Mass, the Host turned into a living piece of Flesh, and the wine had turned into real Blood which thereupon coagulated and split into five globules. The priest “frightened and confused by so great and so stupendous a miracle, stood quite a while as if transported in a divine ecstasy; but finally, as fear yielded to the spiritual joy which filled his soul with a happy face, even though bathed in tears, having turned to the congrega on, he thus spoke to them ‘O fortunate witnesses to whom the Blessed God, to confound my unbelief, has wished to reveal Himself in this Most Blessed Sacrament and to render Himself visible to our eyes. Come Brethren, and marvel at our God so close to us. Behold the Flesh and the Blood of our Most Beloved Christ.’” Amen!!! May all of us do so in every Mass!!!!!

Parishioner Meet & Greet

Whether you are brand new or you have been a parishioner for years, we welcome you to come to the Parishioner Meet & Greet next Sunday, Nov. 3, at 9:30am in the Parish Center!

Each Healing Mass will include a half-hour of Adoration. There is no better way, or place, to surrender all our sufferings, pains, anxieties, and worries than to the Divine Physician present in the Eucharist. During Adoration, the priest or deacon will bring the monstrance to each person to pray for specific healing. Please note, the Anointing of the Sick is not offered during the Healing Mass, as this sacrament is intended for when “anyone of the faithful begins to be in danger of death from sickness or old age” and “just prior to a serious operation” (CCC 1514,1515). If you would like to receive the Anointing of the Sick, please call the Parish Office.

Rest in Peace

Virginia E. Obispo

Eternal rest grant unto her O Lord and perpetual light shine upon her. May the souls of the faithful

departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

Mass of Remembrance Our Bereavement Ministry, cordially invites you to join together at a special Mass of Remembrance and candlelight ceremony on Saturday, November 9, 2019 at 9:30 am. This Mass is offered so that those who grieve a loss, through death, may experience the healing comfort of God through their faith community at Corpus Christi. During this Mass, the names of parishioners who died within the past year (between November 1, 2018 and October 31, 2019) and had their funeral Mass at Corpus Christi, will be read. When

your loved one’s name is read, approach the altar to receive a lighted candle that you may take home with you. An informal reception will be held in our Parish Center immediately following the Mass. All are invited to gather and feel the loving support of others who are also coping with the loss of a loved one.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I register? All Catholics living in the Parish area and regularly participating in the liturgy are invited to register in the Parish. Church attendance alone does NOT make you and your family registered members. Registration is required for Baptism, First Communion, First Reconciliation, Confirmation, Marriage and Catholic Education programs.

Adults 18 and over need to be registered separately from their parents in order to get married, have their own children baptized, or be Godparents or Sponsors.

In order to be a Godparent or Sponsor or to receive discounted tuition rates at Catholic Schools, one must be a registered Catholic and active in the parish, which is indicated by use of contribution envelopes or the Online Giving program.

Registration forms can be filled out in the Parish Office or via our parish website. How do I have my child Baptized? Before scheduling the date, please call the Office for a welcoming conversation with the priest. A preparation class is also required for parents prior to the child’s Baptism and are offered once a month. How do I request a Communion Call or Anointing of the Sick? Please call the parish office at 480-893-8770 DO NOT WAIT until someone is near death to have the person anointed! Although Anointing of the Sick was once known as “Last Rites,” waiting until a person is near death could risk that person not being able to receive the Sacrament if he or she should pass away prior to the priest being able to arrive. Anointing of the Sick can only be administered while the person is still alive. How do I get married in the Church? The Diocese of Phoenix requires a NINE MONTH marriage preparation process. John Deg, Director of Married Life Ministries, will meet with you to explain the process, including when you will meet with the Pastor to set a date. Do NOT set the date prior to this meeting as it cannot be guaranteed until then.

At Beyond the Parish Expo on Nov. 16-17, we are bringing in organiza ons from outside our parish to raise awareness of the services that they provide, so if you or someone you encounter is in need, you know where to go. These organizations also provide many volunteer opportunities for us to serve others, as well as ways for us to offer our financial support.

Fun! Food! Football! Join fellow parishioners on Sunday, December 1 for tailga ng and hanging out as the Arizona Cardinals

host the Los Angeles Rams!

11 am: Tailga ng begins! 2:05 pm: Kickoff!

Tickets are $40 each which helps cover our cost of the ckets (which was $35 each) and some of the tailgating supplies. We do have a limited number of ckets, so get yours before they are gone!

We also have a few free parking passes which will be given out to the first families who register! Otherwise you will need to purchase a Black Lot parking pass separately for $20 (more details will come later).

Important note: Please know that it is a LONG walk from the parking lot to the stadium, and another long walk up to the seats at the very top. Please consider this ahead of me. Thank you!

The Seven Sisters Apostolate: A Way for Women to Support Their Priests

"In strengthening the priest you strengthen the whole Church…"

One concrete way to do this is through the Seven Sisters Apostolate. The apostolate's call is to strengthen the Church by ensuring that a Holy Hour is prayed each day of the week for the sole inten on of a specific priest or bishop — a lavishing of prayer for that priest’s deeper conformity to Christ.

For more informa on, go to sevensistersapostolate.org or contact Tina Glenn at az [email protected].

Parish Center and a er dinner we enjoyed a variety of ac vi es, as well as dessert and snacks.

An average of 20 volunteers helped each evening - an increase from 15 in July! All volunteers were very important and a special thanks to those who signed up as Overnight Hosts!! Our set-up crew, take-down team, and lovely laundry ladies were also essen al to this ministry's success of making the families comfortable while they stayed at our parish.

We will be hos ng families again! SAVE THE DATES: May 17 - 24
