PRAYERArtist: Dvora Barzilai

Barzilai’s Prayer series explores the Hebrew language in prayers, liturgy, songs, contemporary Hebrew proverbs and forgotten texts — brought to life through mixed media including gold leaf, tempera, sand, cement, ashes, oils and canvas.

Originally from Tel Aviv, Barzilai trained with several prominent Israeli artists throughout her early career. In 1992, she and her family moved to Vienna where her husband serves as the Chief Cantor at the Vienna City Temple.

Inspiration is drawn from her life as an observant Jew. Religion and Jewish tradition are at the centre of her work.

Dvora Barzilai exhibits her work and outdoor installations internationally, including Moscow, Romania, Bulgaria, and Austria.

MARATHON Conceived, Directed & Choreographed by Aharona IsraelText: Aharona Israel, Asa WolfsonActors / Dancers / Vocals: Ilya Domanov, Merav Dagan, Gal ShamaiMusic: Udi Berner | Costumes: Liat EzraStage design: Aharona IsraelPerformed in: English & HebrewDuration: 60 minutes

Three figures run in a circle, struggling to continue as they spiral into the depths of Israeli consciousness. As their journey becomes harder and more painful, their stories break down, revealing the wounds of contemporary Israeli society.

Combining dance, text, theatre, and gruelling physicality, Marathon uses the autobiographical stories of three performers to reflect a state of constant emergency. It is an exciting, visceral work that depicts the desperate need to hold onto ideas and ideals in an impossibly unstable world. Who will survive? And how?

Following its Toronto dates, Marathon will tour to Public Energy (Peterborough), Undercurrents festival (Ottawa), and the Chutzpah! Festival (Vancouver).

This is Marathon’s North American premiere.

A dramatic reading:

APPLES FROM THE DESERTWritten by Savyon Liebrecht Translated by Shir Freibach

Winner of Israel’s Best Play Award, 2006

A poignant drama about love and reconciliation adapted by one of Israel’s most beloved authors from her own short story, this hit Israeli play follows the young Sephardic Rivka, a religious teenager, who falls for Dooby, a secular kibbutznik, at a dance class in Jerusalem. She arranges to follow him back to his kibbutz in the Negev Desert, but not before Rivka’s orthodox parents bar her from leaving, forcibly at first, only to chase after Rivka as she flees. A timeless and timely confrontation between tradition and modernity becomes a moving reckoning, as the sweetest of meals is offered and two generations learn to make peace.

“ Savyon Liebrecht is one of [Israel’s] most popular authors… She writes intelligently about ordinary people in situations that reveal the depths and passions of their lives.” – The Jerusalem Post

ASAF AVIDAN with special guests

While Asaf Avidan has drawn comparisons to Janis Joplin, Jeff Buckley and Nina Simone, he possesses a voice that is utterly singular. He shot to worldwide fame when his track “One Day / Reckoning Song,” performed with his band, hit number one in 14 countries as a remix by Berlin’s DJ Wankelmut.

Avidan recently released his debut solo album Different Pulses to much acclaim in Europe. In the new work, he focuses his passion and poetry into a tight suite of songs linked by robust melodies and intriguing psychological ambivalence. Avidan pushes his remarkable voice to its limits. The new album has already sold over 200,000 copies in Europe, where the remix single “Reckoning Day” has sold over 1.5 million.

DIWAN SAZ INTERFAITH ENSEMBLE

Diwan Saz is a multicultural group made up of Jewish, Muslim, Christian and Bedouin musicians, who perform ancient music from Central Asia, Turkey, Persia, and the Holy Land. The melodies and texts incorporate the spirit and music of Sufism and the musical heritage of the Holy Land. Diwan Saz explores this music in depth, playing, composing and transposing texts and melodies from the various ethnic and folk traditions. Promoting peace and understanding through their music, Diwan Saz illustrates another side of Israel, not often reported – a place where diverse cultures have co-existed for centuries in close creative harmony through, among other things, music.

TWO ROOM APARTMENT By and with: Niv Sheinfeld & Oren LaorBased on the 1987 dance work by Nir Ben Gal and Liat DrorMusic: Ori Vidislavski (original music), Elton John, Vains of Jenna, Artistic advisor: Keren Levi, Costumes: Niv Sheinfeld & Oren Laor, Lights: Netta KorenCoproduction with Centre National de la Danse (Paris) and Grand Theater (Groningen)Duration: 50 minutes Best Performance of the Year 2013 –

Israeli Dance Critics’ Circle

Two Room Apartment brings Sheinfeld & Laor to the stage for a duet that reflects on their relationship as partners in life and as creators. The work examines boundaries in various contexts: physical borders such as between territories or between two rooms, but also non-physical borders, such as between life and performance, and boundaries the individual sets for himself. This is a new, contemporary reading of the 1987 performance created by Liat Dror and Nir Ben Gal, which is considered a milestone in independent Israeli choreography.

GETT: THE TRIAL OF VIVIANE AMSALEM

France|Germany|Israel 2014, 116 minsHebrew & French with English subtitlesDir. Ronit Elkabetz & Shiomi ElkabetzCast: Ronit Elkabetz, Menashe Noy, Simon Abkarian, Sasson Gabai

Winner of Best Film at the 2014 Jerusalem Film Festival and Israel’s submission for the 2015 Academy Awards.

Viviane Amsalem (Ronit Elkabetz, The Band’s Visit) desperately craves a divorce from her controlling husband, but since there is no civil divorce in Israel, she is at the mercy of her unpredictable husband and the rabbinical courts. The airtight script balances the indignities that Viviane is forced to endure with moments of Kafkaesque humour that underscore the absurdity of a 21st Century woman whose freedom is curtailed by archaic biblical laws. A powerful critique of faith and gender politics in Israel.

Coffee and tea will be available in theatre immediately prior to screening.
