Traveling Light By Lynn Olcott

Power Up

“You are the light of the world.”

Matthew 5:14 The other day I came home to find my street blocked off with fire trucks. Half of a large tree had split loose from its trunk and fallen on several power lines, knocking out the whole street. My house was dim and still. No email. The phone was out. I couldn’t watch the news. The stove was cold. The refrigerator was dark inside. The clocks were blank.

It occurred to me that when I let myself drift out of touch with God, my life is like this—lonely, silent, dim and blank. I prayed, thanking God for the insight. I asked God to protect the men outside in elevator trucks who were sawing branches free and reconnecting wires. Eventually, the power came back on. I prayed again, grateful to have current restored.

God of all energies, hold me in your amazing light. Thank you. Amen.

LIBRARY NEWS

Once in awhile a book will provide a good story for group discussion. Daughters-in-Law, by Joanna Trollope, will leave the reader with the feeling of wanting to share thoughts with others. What happens to a family when one generation has to make way for the next? How do we move over and move on to a change in our role in the new fami-ly? Anthony and Rachel Brinkley welcome a third daughter-in-law to the family. They don't quite real-ize the profound shift that is to take place. Two daughters-in-law have not been able to resist Rachel's maternal control and then along comes Charlotte. I think you will find hope in the story's ending when everyone has learned what family love means all over again. Mothers and daughters-in-laws, find a comfortable place to read and enjoy. This is truly a story many of us have lived. Want to share your reflection? Charlene Baird

OUR TIME, OUR TURN CAPITAL PROJECT DEDICATED

Rev. Noble On Sunday, July 19th, around seventy-five members and friends gathered in the sanc-tuary to worship God and dedicate the capital improvement project 2010-11, Our Time, Our Turn. The completed project included the Pipe Organ Renovation, a Three-Stop Lift, Sanctu-ary Restoration and Lighting, New Rear Entrance and Addition, Kitchen Entry and Elec-trical Improvements, Parking Lot, Expanded and Resurfaced Driveway, Steeple Light-ing, and Two ADA Approved Bathrooms. The worship service was highlighted with beautiful anthems, "Rejoice, the Lord is King," arranged by Joel Raney, and "Our Hope for Year to Come” by Ruth Elaine Schram. Both pieces were directed and prepared by our Organist and Music Director, Nathaniel De Young with organ, piano, and choir. The Handbell Choir participat-ed throughout "Rejoice, the Lord is King" and accompanied the choir in the Choral Response, "Go Now in Peace." As we dedicated the work accomplished over the last year and a half, at the same time, we rededicated our House of God that it may remind us ever that we shall worship God in spirit and truth.

Have you checked out the church’s webpage lately? I’ve added a new tab for videos.  (www.castletonchurch.org/videos)  If you missed the dedica on service on June 19 you can go to our website and watch and listen to the sermon (except for the first few minutes) and hear the bells and choir give the “Go Now In Peace” Choral Response.  If you have any video of church events you want to share, let me know. I also have established a Facebook Page for Castleton Church and I’ll soon have a link to it on the church webpage.

Using the digital technology and social media tools is just one of the many ways to get word out about what is happening at Federated Church and le ng people know who we are and what we’re about. However, it will never replace old‐fashioned word of mouth, one‐on‐one invita ons, weekly announcements, and our weekly emails. So, if you are not ready to “jump in” and “like us” on Facebook, you will s ll get the informa on you need if you read the newsle er, the weekly emails and the bulle n announcements.  By the way, if you have an email address and are not currently ge ng weekly church announcements via email and would like to, email me at the office ([email protected]) and ask to be added. Don’t worry, you won’t be overwhelmed by email‐usually just one per week unless there is a  rare special an‐nouncement.  ‐Bev

The Pipe Organ renovation (right) was dedicated to the glory of God and in loving memory of Whitney Burr, Grace Mildred Gra-ham, Bill & Elly M. Moesch, and Leva Seely. This beautiful new addition and entryway (below) houses a three stop lift (basement, ground, and sanctuary). The lift was dedicated to the glory of God and in loving memory of David R.
