LAST TIME OUT: CASTLETONThe Spartans dropped to 4-3 with a 47-26 loss at the hands of Husson last Saturday. The Eagle defense recorded the first nine points with a safety and interception for a touchdown in the opening quarter. Castleton pulled within 16-13 after a pair of touchdowns from George Busharis to Zachary Howe, but Husson outscored the Spartans 21-7 over the final eight minutes of the second quarter to lead 37-16 at the half. Castleton allowed just 164 total yards in the second half as each team scored ten points for the 21-point final. Busharis finished with a season-high 398 passing yards and two touchdowns while the defense gave

up 348 yards rushing and 521 total yards.

LAST TIME OUT: MARITIME (N.Y.)The Privateers won their second straight game with a 13-6 victory over Becker last Saturday at home. Maritime recovered three fumbles and intercepted a pass in limiting the Hawks to a single touchdown and 225 yards of total offense. The Privateers led 3-0 at the half and pushed their lead to 10-0 early in the third. Becker came back with a touchdown later that quarter but a Maritime field goal in the fourth was the final scoring of the game. The Privateers rushed for 196 yards in the game and committed just two penalties in the win.

RECENT HISTORYCastleton is 1-4 all-time against Maritime, with the lone win coming at home in 2012. In that game the Spartans led 21-9 at the half and then added two touchdowns in the third quarter for a 35-9 lead before finishing with a 35-16 win. They passed for 349 yards in the game and the defense allowed 319 total yards. Last year on the road Castleton trailed just 7-6 at the half but the Privateers scored 31 unanswered points in the second half to win 38-6. They recorded 550 yards rushing while the Spartans were held to 202 yards of total offense.

SCOUTING THE SPARTANSOffense: Castleton has taken to the air in recent games and leads the conference in passing yards (218.7) and scoring (29.3), while ranking second in total yards per game (347.6). Junior George Busharis has come on strong as of late and is averaging 249.7 yards per game through the air in three appearances, while also tossing eight touchdowns with six interceptions. He primary receiver has been Kevin Alberque, who is coming off his first 200-yard receiving game last weekend. Alberque leads the ECFC in both catches (35) and yards (553) while scoring six total touchdowns this year. Zachary Howe has 22 catches, including 14 in the last two games, for 303 yards and two scores. On the ground, Corey Brimmer leads the team with 360 yards rushing, averaging 3.8 yards per rush with a pair of touchdowns.

Defense: The Spartans allowed over 23 points for just the second time this year against Husson and for the season are giving up 22.7 points per game. Teams are averaging 366.7 yards per game, with 190.7 coming on the ground and 176.0 through the air. Castleton leads the nation in both turnovers gained (26) and fumble recoveries (15) while ranking 29th in interceptions (11). Ryan Stanek leads the team with 61 tackles while Darren Callan is right behind him with 59 tackles and two sacks. Nicholas Romeo has 47 stops along with three fumble recoveries, two interceptions and a touchdown. The team also has 16 sacks with six different players recording at least 2.0 sacks.

SCOUTING THE PRIVATEERSOffense: This year Maritime has relied on its ground attack while scoring 18.1 points per game. The Privateers rank second in the ECFC with 197.0 yards rushing per game but conversely are seventh with 79.1 passing yards per game. Quarterback Zack Chilcott leads the option attack, passing for 67.1 yards per game and three scores while also ranking second on the team with 472 rushing yards. He is averaging

3.7 yards per rush and has a team-high five touchdowns. Kyle Gardner leads the team with 74.7 yards per game and two touchdowns while Greg Caneparo has three scores and 318 yards rushing. Caneparo also leads the team in receptions (14) and yards (182).

Defense: The Privateer attack is allowing 23.6 points per game but has given up 12 points or less in three of its last four games. Opposing offenses are averaging 305.6 yards per game, with 186.9 on the ground and 118.7 through the air. The defense has picked off seven passes and has nine fumble recoveries while registering 14 sacks. Hugh O’Brien leads the team with 57 tackles, including 5.5 sacks and 13.5 tackles for a loss. Nick Coffiey is second with 54 tackles and one interceptions while Duke Alvora has 43 stops. Chris Klass leads the team with four interceptions and two blocked kicks.six passes while recovering six fumbles and recording 11 sacks. Stephan Dance leads the team with 46 tackles while Ellis Throckmorton is second on the team with 37 tackles and has a team-high 8.5 tackles for a loss. Three different players have 2.0 sacks, including Matt Pellerin, who also has 22 tackles.

COMMON OPPONENTSBoth Castleton and Maritime are 2-2 in the ECFC this year. Castleton has wins over Anna Maria (65-9) and Becker (24-0) with losses to Mount Ida (26-21) and Husson (47-26). The Privateers have also beaten Anna Maria (40-12) and Becker (13-6), while falling to Mount Ida (7-6) and Husson (40-0).

ECFC Weekly Honors for Week Eight

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEKZach Allen, Norwich(Jr, WR - Boston, Mass.)Allen made the most of his opportunities with three catches totaling 140 yards with two touchdowns to lead Norwich to a 28-20 victory over Anna Maria on Saturday. Allen had three receptions with two of them ending in the end zone, including a 74-yard grab that ended up being the difference in the game with 12:58 left in the fourth quarter.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEKKalyn Smithson, Mount Ida(Sr, LB - Vilseck, Germany)Smithson forced a pair of fumbles that led to all of Mount Ida’s ten points in a 10-6 win at Gallaudet. He knocked the ball out deep in Gallaudet’s territory to lead to a field goal in the first quarter. Then, with the Bison on the Mount Ida one yard line, Smithson forced a fumble and recovered himself, returning the ball 50 yards, which set the Mustangs up for their game-winning touchdown. Smithson also had eight tackles in the win.

SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEKDiogo Dietrich, Maritime (N.Y.)(Jr, K - Rio de Janeiro, Brazil)Junior placekicker Diogo Dietrich set the new program record for field goals made in Maritime’s win on Saturday afternoon against Becker. Dietrich also accounted for half of Maritime’s 14 points on the afternoon with seven on the day. With just under eight minutes left in the opening quarter, he lined up for a 27-yard field goal and sent the ball through the uprights for his 18th career field goal, setting the new program record that had stood for three seasons. He later tacked on a 35-yard field goal late in the fourth quarter to cap of the scoring for Maritime.

ROOKIE OF THE WEEKCraig Hinrichs, Maritime (N.Y.)(Fr, LB - Islip, N.Y.)Maritime rookie linebacker Craig Hinrichs had a season-best four tackles and a forced fumble in the Privateers’ 13-6 win over Becker on Saturday afternoon. The rookie collected his first career sack for a loss in six yards on Becker’s first drive in the second quarter to force a fourth down and a punt. Hinrichs was part of a big play in the fourth quarter, as Becker started the period with the ball but the linebacker was able to force a fumble to give Maritime the ball back.
