General MaintenanceThe shredders are designed to perform consistentlywith a minimum amount of maintenance. This sectioncontains recommendations for external and internalcleaning, inspection, and lubrication.

External CleaningClean the exterior of the shredder with a soft cloth.Moisten the cloth with a mild solution of detergent(such as dish-washing liquid) and warm water. Usedetergent sparingly to avoid contact with electricalparts.

Do not use flammable synthetic oil, petroleum-basedproducts, or aerosol lubricants of any kind. Do not usechemical cleaners, solvents, or aerosol sprays to cleanthe exterior of the shredder.

Internal CleaningThe shredder does not require periodic internalcleaning. However, when the shredder is being servicedperform these maintenance tasks:

Remove any paper strips or pieces thatmay have collected around the cuttingassembly.

If lubricated parts are dusty, wipe away thedust with a soft cloth.

Use a small brush or vacuum to removedust from the non-lubricated surfaces suchas the motor, cutting assembly, housing, and wiring.

Do not use chemical cleaners, solvents, or aerosolsprays to clean the interior of the shredder.

InspectionWhen the shredder is being serviced, visually inspect itfor defects such as loose screws, loose terminals andconnectors, and any other problems you notice.

Correct any defects and test the shredder beforereturning it to the customer.

LubricationOnly confetti-cut shredders (320C-2, 380C-2, C-320C,and C-380C) require lubrication to ensure properoperation. If used at or near capacity, the machinesshould be oiled every time the basket is emptied, whenit becomes noisy, and when it is serviced. Use FellowesPowershred Lubricant (#35250) or other non-aerosolvegetable-based oil in a long-nozzle container. Do notuse flammable synthenic oil, petroleum-based products,or aerosol lubricants of any kind.

To apply oil:

1 Turn off the shredder.

2 LIft the paper entry flap and apply oil over the fullwidth of the cutting cylinders through the paperentry slot.

3 Press and hold the Manual Forward button for atleast 3 seconds.

4 Press and hold the Reverse button for at least3 seconds.

5 Repeat the forward/reverse sequence 3 or moretimes.

OperationThe operator panel is located on the shredder cover. The panel contains control switches and buttons, indicator LEDs, and a Ready light.

TroubleshootingTroubleshooting the shredder begins with checking themachine for possible faults. Possible causes for machinemalfunctions include:

 Paper feed problems

 Electrical problems

 Mechanical problems

Paper Feed ProblemsPaper jams and a full wastebasket are two commonproblems. Indicator LEDs on the shredder cover help toidentify these problems. Both of these are easy to solve. In addition, birdnesting, a build up of paper shreds alongthe underside of the cutting assembly, can be a problemon confetti-cut shredders.

CAUTION!Never attempt to force jammed materialthrough the shredder.

If the paper jam light is on, follow these steps until thelight turns off.

1 Unplug the shredder.

2 Check the wastebasket and empty if full. Replacethe basket and make sure the door ajar switch isfully engaged.

3 Plug in the shredder. Press and hold thereverse (R) control switch to back paper out of thepaper entry slot. Try pulling gently on the paper toremove it from the shredder.

4 Alternate between forward and reverse, asneeded:

a Press and hold the Manual Forward button for afew seconds.

b Press and hold the Reverse control switch for afew seconds.

c Continue alternating between forward andreverse until the jam clears.

CAUTION!The shredder may be damaged if you alternatetoo rapidly between forward and reverse.

Page 12: Fellows Shreddar Manual

6

To clear a buildup of paper shreds from the underside ofthe cutting assembly (also called birdnesting):

1 Unplug the shredder.

2 Check the wastebasket and empty if full. Replacethe basket and make sure the paper full switch isfully engaged.

3 Plug in the shredder.

4 Alternate between forward and reverse to clear thebirdnest:

a Press and hold the Manual Forward button for afew seconds.

b Press and hold the Reverse (R) switch in the fora few seconds.

c Continue alternating between forward andreverse a few times.

5 Feed the maximum cutting capacity (e.g.,14-16 sheets of 20 lb. paper for the 320C-2 andC-320C shredders), at one time, if needed to clearthe birdnest.

Electrical ProblemsThe most common electrical problems result from anopened door, loose wires, or a defective PC board.

Check the basket to make sure it is not overfilled and isproperly positioned in the cabinet. Press theAutomatic (I) switch, then press the Manual Forwardbutton to start the shredding operation.

If the PC board is defective, the shredder may not run atall. Other indicators that the PC board is defective mightbe if the shredder runs in reverse but not forward or theLED lights do not turn off.

Occasionally the capacitor may be defective. Typicalproblems caused by a defective capacitor are that themotor runs but with no power.

Page 13: Fellows Shreddar Manual

7

Mechanical ProblemsMechanical problems can often be identified by listeningto the sound of the machine when it is operating andobserving whether the paper cutting capacity drops.

If a confetti-cut machine is making excessive noise, itmay need to be lubricated. Try oiling the cutting shafts. To do this, apply the lubricating oil through the paperentry slot on the cover. Run the cutting system forwardand backward several times without feeding paper. Thenfeed paper through the shredder. See the Lubricationinstructions in the General Maintenance section of thismanual for additional instructions.

If these simple solutions do not solve the problem, usethe troubleshooting flowcharts to help identify and solvethe problem.

Troubleshooting FlowchartsThis section includes four flowcharts that begin with atypical shredder problem.
