We Need Our Nausea, Part 10 Ecclesiastes #40 1 Timothy 6:6-11 We all have both intrinsic (the things you do purely because you value them in and of themselves, not because of anything you get out of them, you do it for the joy of it) and extrinsic (the things you do not because you actually want to do them but because you’ll get something in return-money, admiration, sex, status) motives. No one is driven by only one or the other. 1. Thinking extrinsically poisons your relationships with other people. 2. 3. When you are materialistic you wonder if people are judging you. 4. All of us have certain innate needs— What is the remedy? 1 Timothy 6:11-12 One aspect of world that I have been able to identify as harmful to Christians is the assumption that anything worthwhile can be acquired at once. In our kind of culture anything, even news about God, can be sold if it is packaged freshly; but when it loses its novelty, it goes on the garbage heap. Paul gives four commands in 1 Timothy 6:11-12 that are pillars for perseverance (to help ward off slipping into deep sadness): Flee; pursue; fight; and lay hold or take hold. Paul explains that the development of our Christian character (righteousness, godli-ness, etc) requires a daily choice to work out our salvation in fear and trembling.

Dear Lord, If you should remember our iniquities, who could stand before you? But we thank you that there is forgiveness with you so that we may fear and honor you; with you there is mercy, even abundant redemption, for you promised to redeem even Israel from all their iniquities. The sacrifices that you look for are a broken spirit; a broken and a contrite heart, O Lord, you will not despise: Even though you are the high and lofty One that inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy; though the heavens are your throne, and the earth your footstool, yet even to us will you look, upon us that are poor and humble, of a broken and a contrite spirit, and that tremble at your word, you revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones. You have graciously assured us, that those that cover their sins shall not prosper, yet those that confess and forsake them will find mercy. And when any poor repentant sinner says, “I will confess my transgression to the Lord,” you forgive them the iniquity of their sin, and therefore, every one that is godly will likewise pray to you, in a time when you may be found. We know that your word tells us that if we say, We have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us; but thou hast said that if we confess our sins, thou art faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Therefore Lord, we ask that you would help us to confess our sins to you, and that you would indeed forgive us, as you have sworn to do. Amen Hebrews 10:14-18 For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified. And the Holy Spirit also bears witness to us; for after saying, “This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, declares the Lord: I will put my laws on their hearts, and write them on their minds,” then he adds, “I will remember their sins and their lawless deeds no more.” Where there is forgiveness of these, there is no longer any offering for sin.

Life Line Health Screenings at FABC in October Ferguson Avenue Baptist Church is pleased to offer a preventive health event. GUIDELINES FOR DEACON ELECTION - I Timothy 3: 8-13

The minimum qualifications are as follows: · A deacon must be reverent—serious in mind and character, not flippant toward the

work of God. · A deacon is not double-tongued. He must be honest and consistent, discreet, not say-

ing one thing to some people and then another thing to others. · A deacon must not be given to much wine—not preoccupied with drink. His judgment

is never to be clouded by alcohol, or any other chemical. · A deacon must not be greedy for money—does not have a reputation for being preoc-

cupied with gaining material wealth and things. He does not use his position to gain money from others—not covetous.

· A deacon holds the mystery of the faith with a pure conscience. He believes the Gos-pel with no doubts. He is firmly convinced of the truths of Scripture and the trustwor-thiness of the Scriptures themselves.

· Let a deacon first be tested—meaning that he is not new a believer, and he is some-one who has already demonstrated spiritual maturity and a willingness to serve oth-ers, to be inconvenienced without complaint.

· A deacon must be found blameless; no valid accusation of wrongdoing can be made against him.

· A deacon must be the husband of one wife; obviously not polygamous, not a woman-izer. Some think this means he cannot be a divorced man, but there are some di-vorces which God allows and recognizes. Therefore, if there are biblical grounds for a divorce, then we cannot justifiably disqualify that man. Even though it might be best not to seek this position as a divorced man, he is not necessarily eliminated. (As a side—if there has been a divorce, it should be so far in the past that the man in ques-tion has shown a long pattern of solid family leadership.)

· A deacon rules his own house well—he leads his family by example, shows wisdom in handling problems, his wife and children respect him, and his wife and children are not unruly.

· A deacon’s wife must be: Reverent—same as number one above. Must not be a gossip, control her tongue, emotions, and opinions of others and

sensitive issues. Temperate, alert, watchful, and clear-headed—unclouded judgment, not

clouded by alcohol, or any substance. Faithful in all things—absolutely trustworthy in all things and in all situations.

We might add a spiritual maturity that has been proven.

Who Decided What Books to Include in the Bible? 5 Principles. By Sean McDowell How was it decided what books would become part of the Bible? This question relates to canonicity. The word canon comes from the root word reed. The reed was used as a measuring rod and came to mean “standard.” Canon thus refers to the officially accepted list of biblical books. We are going to briefly consider five guiding principles for canonization from the up-dated Evidence that Demands a Verdict. But first, realize that the church did not create the canon; it did not determine which books would be called Scripture. Instead it recognized, or discovered, which books had been inspired from their inception. Some people think the early church created the list; that they sat down and asked which books fit their dogma, and threw out the rest. It didn’t happen that way at all. In the end they recognized, or discovered, which books had been inspired from their inception. Here are five ways they could tell:

1. Was the book written by a prophet of God? If it was written by a spokesman for God, or commissioned by an apostle, then it was considered the Word of God.

2. Was the writer confirmed by acts of God? Miracles frequently separate true prophets from false ones. Moses performed miracles as proof of his divine calling (Exodus 4:1-9). Elijah defeated the prophets of Baal (1 Kings 18). The apostles per-form miracles at the start of the early church (Acts 3:1-9).

3. Did the message tell the truth about God? God cannot contradict Himself (2 Co-rinthians 1:17-18). And God cannot lie (Hebrews 6:18). Thus, Church Fathers re-jected any book with false statements about God. In fact, according to Geisler and Nix, they maintained the policy, “If in doubt, throw it out.”

4. Does it come with the power of God? Church fathers believed the Bible was “living and active” (Hebrews 4:12) and thus should have transforming power for edifi-cation (2 Timothy 3:17), sanctification, and evangelism (1 Peter 1:23). Thus, if a book did not have the power to change a life, then it was not divinely inspired. The pres-ence of God’s transforming power was a strong indication that a given book had His stamp of approval.

5. Was it accepted by the people of God? In his letter to the church at Thessalonica, Paul said, “And we also thank God constantly for this, that when you received the word of God, which you heard from us, you accepted it not as the word of men but as what it really is, the word of God, which is at work in you believers.” Church Fathers considered whether or not a book was accepted by the first believers as Scripture. If so, then it was regarded as canonical. This practice was seen in the Bible itself. One instance is when the apos-tle Peter acknowledges Paul’s writings as Scripture on par with the OT (2 Peter 3:16).

Discussions about what books to include in the canon are complex, of course, and go beyond the scope of this article. Some books were accepted in the canon much earlier than others. Orthodox, Protestant and Catholics differ over a few books too. Neverthe-less, these five principles help clarify that the process of deciding what books were in the Bible was not left up to chance or happenstance. The Church Fathers were very inten-tional about what books they recognized as divinely inspired, and the common ground across Christian traditions far outweigh the differences.

Missionary of the Week

Pascal and Becky Grenade are missionaries to the island of Mauritius, Pascal’s home country. They are raising four young chil-dren, Liam, Adrien, Ashlen, and baby girl Haava. We received an email update from them this week! God willing, Pascal will be here to share in the morning worship service on October 28. Dear friends, We would like to thank all of you who took the time to pray for Jeff last month. At the time there was a bit of a time crunch for him to obtain an interview at the embassy and book his flight to the US in time for matriculation. We are happy to let you know that he was able to obtain a timely interview and that he made in to the US in time for international student orienta-tion. We would appreciate your continued prayers for him as he adapts to living in the US, being on his own and the educational system as well. Two Sundays ago, following the morning service at church, the congregation went to the seaside for a baptism. A man named Lainsley made a profession of faith several months ago, and he was baptized. This past Saturday he moved to the UK. He really wanted to be baptized before moving to the UK as a testimony to his family members and friends that he has placed his confidence in Christ alone. We are thankful for the past months during which he attended church and was able to get some grounding in the scriptures and in Christian doctrine. We would appreci-ate your prayers for him that his faith will endure that he will continue to grow in his Christian walk. Please pray also that he will find a church family that is centered around the scriptures and that desires to honor Christ in all things. This past Saturday after I got home from kids club with our boys, I saw someone whom I have not seen in many years. His name is Eddy Molière and he was a clerk at my high school. He is a Jehovah’s witness and he was making visits in the neighborhood. We talked about the scriptures and I shared Acts 4.12 with him em-phasizing the importance of understanding biblical truths concerning Jesus. If Jesus is the name by which we must be saved, then what we believe about Jesus is cru-cial. Please pray that his spiritual understanding might be enlightened. We appreciate your prayers for us and for the ministry in Mauritius. Please feel free to share requests of your own with us. Blessings, Pascal and Becky
