    G O '8 8 A n Adven tuNestled at the mouth of th e RiverClyde inScotland's heartland, Glasgow, the nation's

largest city,is home to 1,850,000 souls.

The city ofGlasgow began life as a makeshift hamlet of huts huddled bya 6th centurychurch. Bythe 19th century,Glasgowwas the greatest shipbuildingcentre inthe world. It wasthis industry which caused the city's rapid growth and made itone ofEurope's leading cities.

Glasgow is homeoftwoofScotland's most famous educational centres, StrathctydeUniversity and the University ofGlasgow,as well as twenty-one other institutions ofhigher learning.

Islam has made Glasgow a primarytarget forevangelism. The impressive Muslim mosqueinthe citycentre outshines any ofthe state church's meagerstructures, and is indicative ofthecity's changing religiousdirection.

Also, due toGlasgow's close ties withNorthern Ireland, the city has, unfortunately, developed many of the same sectarian problems.

All of these factors make Glasgow an ideal locationforplanting a thriving NewTestamentChurch. Currentlythe Glasgow area has no independent Christian church/church ofChristwitness! Glasgow isdesperate forsome Good News!

G O '88 will offer a wide range oflearning an d ministry opportunities. Forthree weeks each participant will learn fromOutstanding European an d Americanteachers. Classes will be taught eachmorning on subjects ranging fromBibletoevangelism and Christian Living.Afternoonswill b e s pe nt in evangelisticactivities. Crusade meetings for all ages willb e held in the evenings.

    MISSION TO SCOTLAND UPDATE

    March 1 , 1988

Dea r F r i e nd s ,Be it ever so humble, there ' s no place l ike home. But where exact ly ,

is "home"?A few shor t months ago, Ju l ie and I nearly wept w ith joy as our plane

touched down a f t e r the long t rans-Atlant ic f l igh t in to Boston In ternat ionalAirport . We were f inal ly back "home". But af te r spending a few res t lesshours in the strange airpor t , I realized we had not yet reached "home". No,I decided I real ly wouldn' t be home un t i l I ar r ived safe ly in my hometownof Owasso, Oklahoma (Topeka, Kansas, for Ju l ie ) .And during our t r ave ls across America, many of you have taken us inso graciously and made us feel r igh t at "home". And now, with ju s t a few

weeks l e f t in our furlough (departing March 16), we jus t can ' t wait to getback "home" to Scotland and resume our work! I guess I 'm beginning to fee ll ike the people of the Old Testament who "admitted that they were aliensand s t rangers on ear th" .

The Apo stle P au l summed it up so beau t i fu l ly when he to ld thePhil ippians "But our ci t izenship i s in heaven." We should be longing for andin ve st in g in our t r ue home heaven.

We thank each and every one of you who have shown us such kindhospi ta l i ty . Your encouraging words, wise advice and guidance, and f inancia land prayer fu l commitments have given us concre te evidence t ha t you arevery concerned with expanding God's Kingdom in Scotland. We love you al l !

    VOLUME 3 Apr i l , 1988 NUMBER 1TH E WORD m SCOTLAND

    Dear F r i e nd s ,

    rORWARD in a AQEn i :

    Although we were sad to leave our f r i ends and lovedones back in the Sta tes , we're glad to be back in wet andb lus te ry Scot land! We a r r iv ed in the country on March 17,S t. Pa t r i ck ' s Day. On our f i r s t Sunday back, Sam andA l a t h i a Bu r t o n h e l d a "we l come b a ck " d i n n e r f o r u s afterthe worship s e rv i ce . A t o t a l o f e igh teen people were inattendance.

    It has become apparen t to us t h a t we wi l l be fo rcedto even tua l ly have separa te worship s e rv i c e s . The reasonfo r th is centers around a t ransporta t ion problem. A grea tmany o f the people in Scot l and do no t own t h e i r own ca rs .The major i ty o f these people re ly t o t a l l y upon e i the rwalking or on the publ ic t r anspor ta t ion f a c i l i t i e s (buses ,t r a i n s , t a x i s an d su bw ay ). Since Sam and I l i v e about 20minutes ' drive from one another , we may have to es tab l i shsepara te Sunday meet ings when we reach a po in t where ca r -pool ing i s no longer adequate . You see , the t r anspor tsystem i s almost shu t down on Sundays. Very few busesrun , t r a in s only run in ce r t a in a reas , th e subway onlyse rv ice s a f a i r l y smal l area downtown, and t ax i s a re proh ib i t i ve ly expensive . We pray t h a t having separa te worsh ip s e rv i c e s w i l l be a t empo ra ry mea su re , un t i l some s o r to f bus min i s t ry can be es t ab l i shed .

    Ju l i e and I have a l so decided to move our Sundays e rv i ce out o f our home. This i s pure ly fo r pragmat icreasons . People in Scot l and seem to see a r en t ed ha l l asmuch l e s s t h r ea t en ing and wi l l be much more wi l l i ng to goto a meet ing in one. We a re n eg o tia tin g with the l o c a la u th or i t ie s r ig h t now and hope to have a f irm choice inj u s t a week o r so .

    Although s ev e r a l peop le have had to back ou t o f th eGO '88 in ternship , we still are expecting around 50pa r t i c i pan t s . Taking a b r i e f glance a t my appointmentca l enda r , I see t h a t th e summer i s almost comple te ly f u l lo f d i f f e r en t ac t i v i t i e s . With such exce l len t programming,a l o t o f hard work and hard pray ing , and with the Lord ' sbless ing , I see no reason why St ra thc lyde Chr i s t i an Churchcou ldn ' t be running a t l e a s t one hundred people in s ixmon t h s ' t im e .

    VOLUME 3 May, 1988 NUMBER 2T H E W O R D m S C O T L A N D

Dear Fr i end s ,One of my favor i te Old Testament s tor i es i s found in Exodus 17 .

    It conc e r n s a battle be tween th e A m a l e k i t e s and t h e Israelites. D uring the heat of the ba t t l e , Moses re t rea ts to the top of a nearbyh i l l and begins to lift h is hands toward Heaven. This may appear tobe a fa i r ly useless act un t i l you read verse 11 of the same chapter ,which says, "As long as Moses held up h is hands, the I s r ae l i t e s werewinning, but whenever he lowered h is hands, the Amaleki tes were winning." I think this i s a wonderful i l lus t ra t ion of what intercessoryprayer can achieve.

Perhaps John Wesley was not too fa r o ff the mark when he proclaimed that "God does nothing but in answer to prayer." Certainlymore i s accomplished through our fe rvent prayers than we wi l l everknow on t h i s s id e o f Heaven. Tha t i s why we ask all o f you to prayfor us. The bat t le is raging over in Scotland, and without God'speople "holding up thei r hands" in prayer, we are in great danger oflos ing the f igh t aga ins t the Enemy. Please , please pray fo r us.

After checking with about twenty di f ferent loca t ions , we havehad only one place agree to le t us use the i r building, but not un t i lSeptember. In th e meantime, we are checking with our l a s t possiblesources and fol lowing up every l ead. Many of the loca l communitybuild in gs a re under the ju r i sd ic t ion of the loca l governmen t and cannot be opened on Sundays. The place tha t has agreed to l e t us uset h e i r f a c i l i t i e s i s a l o ca l high school .

Repairs on our car f ina l ly got to the po in t where they werebecoming a major f inancia l problem, so we got r id of it. In i t s placewe purchased a 15-seat Ford van to use fo r the church. There i s noway we can afford th i s purchase, bu t we f igured i f God wants, us tohave it, He wil l provide the money. Total costs were about $ 3,5 00 ,and i f you would l ike to give a specia l ly designated g i f t , we wouldbe g lad to accep t your he lp .

    Denton and Lisa Fr a z i e r have a r r i v ed as pa r t o f the Gla sg ow Outreach team, and they are s tay in g with us un t i l they can f ind a placeo f t h e i r own. We a re r e a l l y en joy ing them and a lso look forward tothe ar r iva l of Derry and Kelly Gibson next week, and Steve Welch thefirst w e e k o f J u n e .

    FORWARDir iQ AQEMT:

Please allow me to e xp lain why th is issue of The Word inScotland i s so l a te in arr iv ing a t your mailbox. Ju l ie and 1 f ina l lybegan our public church meetings in our community on May 29th. Wedecided it would be nice to delay the new sle tte r fo r a week or soin order to fill you in on the deta i l s !

After checking every other possib le f ac i l i ty in the area , aplace called the Eagle Lodge has agreed to le t us use their premisesfor as long as we want, even though the cost is rather high (about$50 per week). Eagle Lodge is not a masonic f ac i l i ty , but ra ther i thas a few res taurants , lounges, and function rooms for sma ll c on fe rences o r semin ars, e tc . General ly, it i s well-known in the communityas a place to mix socia l ly . I t is practica l ly a landmark. Our f i r s tpubl ic meeting was attended by 17 people.

Sunday has become very busy for us. We have a meeting at 11:00a.m. in Cumbernauld, a sa te l l i t e community of Glasgow, which i s fo llowed by a congregat ional prayer time. Then we load up a l l of theequipment into our Ford van and go over to Bishopbriggs, northGlasgow, maybe grab a quick bite to eat and begin set t ing up for ou rsecond service, a t 2:00 p.m. I t ' s real ly a whole lo t of fun!

Both communities also have t h e i r own separate B ib le stu dy eveni ng sWedne sday and Thursday.

Our working arrangement as a ministry team has allowed us todiversify and offer a wide range of ministr ies for a f ledglingcongregation. Thus far, we have members specializing i n s ingle s'minist ry , Chri st ian education, youth ministry, women's discipleship, and in a few weeks our special is t in ins t i tu t ional ministry will bearr iv ing in the country (whose job will include ministering in thehospita ls , prisons, and homes for the aged).Because of our new Sunday meeting arrangement in a well-knownplace, th e local newspaper has given us some much-appreciated freepublicity for two consecutive weeks. Praise the Lord! And please forgive me for th i s belated announcement, but we aredesignating June as th e month of prayer for Scotland. All other team

    Dear Fr i end s ,

    Summer i s now wel l upon us and, here in Scot land, we areexperiencing the warmest and dr i e s t season in many years . The a i ri s th ick with pol len from a l l of the plants and flowers of thecountryside. Among the more in te res t ing of these plants i s thet h i s t l e , a rugged wild f lower with purple blooms, which i sSco t l a n d ' s n a t i o n a l f l owe r .

    Each year the Queen of England comes to Scot land, and as pa r to f her o f f i c i a l summer v i s i t , s t ays a t the Pa lace o f Holyroodhousein Edinburgh. Each year , magnif icent th i s t l e s are grown in thegardens of th e P alace to celebrate the v i s i t . The t h i s t l e , then ,i s a symbol o f roya l ty .

    The f i r s t time th i s t l e s appeared in Scotland as a roya l symbolwas around 1470, when two t h i s t l e s were s tamp ed on a s i l v e r co ini s sued by James I I I .

King James knew other countr ies which had p lan ts as symbols, sohe decided Scot land should a l so have a symbol ic p l an t , and chosethe thistle.

    Some assume James thought the hardy nature of the t h i s t l e ,coupled with its sp iky p ro t ec t i on , r e f l ec t ed th e na t i ona lcharacteristics o f his f e l l ow S c o t s . I b e l i e v e this is a s a f eassumption. While the Sco t t i sh people are general ly warm andf r iendly people, they often put on a rough exter ior . Although theytend to be reserved, once you make a fr iend of a Scot, yo u've got af r iend fo r l i f e . Contrary to popular be l i e f , they are also generousand hosp i t a b l e .

    However, th i s "spiky protection" also prevents the Scots fromcommitting themselves to the Lord. They are happy as long as theycan keep Chris t iani ty a t arm's length . They wil l accept tha t Jesushas a place as a h i s t o r i ca l f igu re , but are af r a id to t r u s t in Himfo r t he i r everyday needs . Sco tland can cer t a in ly be considered aresistant mi s s i o n field!

    VOLUME 3 October /November , 1988 NUMBER 7TH E WORD IN SCOTLAND

    Dea r F r i e n d s ,

If you did no t receive our October newsletter, don't be alarmed! Please don' t kick your cat or yel l a t the postman. We spent threeweeks of October in America and did not put out a newslet ter .Ju l ie and I came back to at tend the wedding of my s i s t e r , Mary, andspent two additional weeks of vacation time with friends and family.(Incidentally, the money used fo r this trip was not "mission money"or salary; i t was a special gif t for this very purpose.) The timespent was relaxing and rejuvenating to us and we thank a l l of thosewho encouraged us and made i t a very enjoyab le exper ience. We arenow back in S co tl an d w i th our noses se t f i rmly to the gr inds tone .However, we a re enjoy ing a vis i t from Julie 's paternal grandparentsat this time, and they are being very understanding about how we'reworking around th e times we get to spend visi t ing with them. After spending two and a half years in Great Britain doing th e workof an evangelist , I have formed some very firm convictions concerning the relationships between th e chur ch, th e sta te , and the schoolsystems. I would encourage a l l American Christians to activelysupport th e separation between church and state . Most of you wouldagree with me on this point. But I may be stepping into very deepwate r w ith many of you when I say that I strongly oppose rel igiousteaching of any descript ion within th e public schoo l sys tem. Butplease allow me to expla in .Religion enjoys a unique s ta tus in Britain. In part icular , i tenjoys a guaranteed place on th e national radio and television andin t he s ch oo l c ur ric ul um ( a l l th ree i n s t i t u t i on s here a re no t onlygovernmen t- regu la ted, but also government-run). Yet i t remains asad paradox that th e privi leged access of Christ ianity in Britainto such v i t a l means o f communicat ion and educa t ion has had so litt le apparent impact. Each generation is more secular than the la s t ,each year ' s graduating class i s more dismissive of rel igion thanthe previous year's, and each opinion poll charts Britain 's courseof becoming a Post-Christian country. Yet in America, where rel igious broadcasting i s almost universal ly appalling and re l igiouseducat ion in s ta te schools banned by law, the l eve ls of re l ig iousbel ief and practice are far higher than in Britain. The Britishcustodians of re l ig ion sa y it i s not the i r jo b to convince or toconvert , but merely to e xp la in and inform. R ath er th an an invi tat ion to every individual to which the only possible answers are"yes" or "no", Christ ianity has become an objective anthropological

phenomenon to be discussed and analyzed. I t is always about otherpeople, never about oneself. I t is an academic study of a traditionwhich never asks , "What use i s th is to me?" and i t i s , in fact ,professional ly off- l imits to provide answers to such questions.Think fo r a moment. I f American s t a t e schoo l s were to in t roducerel igious studies in the ir curriculum, who would regulate such aprogram? The responsibi l i ty would e i ther f a l l into the hands of th egovernment, th e left-wing education associations, or some ecumenicalre l igious board; none of t he se opti on s are desirable. And in ademocratic society l ike the U. S ., would not ALL re l ig ious persuas ions need to be r epresen ted? Please be will ing to learn a lesson from his tory. In Bri ta in , wherethe casual observer can see re l ig ions t rappings of many va r i e t i e s ,atheism and secular thought are the norm ra ther than the exception.Only the Church can stem th is r is ing t ide of apathy and noncommit -ment. We must show for th a L iv ing S av io r who c an ch ange individua ls ,fami l i es , even whole communit ies and nat ions!

PRAYER REQUESTS:1. Pray that we will preach boldly, and aggressively seek l i f e -

changing dec i s i ons .2. Pray that we can minis ter effec t ive ly to those fr iends of ourswho are in bondage to immoral i ty , apathy, fear , and chemicals .3. Pray for a Spirit-led revival iiyfelasgow.

    TH E WORD IN SCOTLAND

Recently, as I was helping a friend to unloadlarge package from the back of his car trunk, noticed an interest ing l i t t l e symbol on thecar ton. Along with the usua l inst ruct ions to"STORE IN A COOL, DRY PLACE," and "THIS SIDEUP," there was a fur ther one, "BEND KNEES WHENLIFTING," w ith the f igure of a person l i f t i ngan ob j e c t .

The sp i r i t ua l appl icat ion of th is ins t ruct ion, when trying to " l i f t " someone, is clearenough. While prayer is one of the great pr iv ileges of the Christian l i fe , i t is also hard work. But I believe God is looking for men and women who are willing totake the time and ef for t and, l ike Epaphras of old , wrestle inprayer (Col. 3:12). Take half an hour this week and "bend yourknees and l i f t someone up in p ra ye r."On top of preaching, calling and helping to organize and runspecial programs for the church, I am now engaged in leading threehome Bible study groups. One is an evangelistic study for non-Chris t ians , one is a doctrinal-teaching study for a few men in th e

church, and the thi rd is a "Senior Saints" study, which I am leadingun t i l Denton and Lisa Fra ize r a r r ive back from America in January .I am enjoying the challenge of teaching these studies and will hateto give one of them up when the F ra iz er s r e tu r n.For our Christmas act iv i ty , we have planned an open-air l ivenativity scene. This may seem pretty old hat in America, bu t overin Scotland, i t ' s a brand new, exciting idea. All that remains forus to do is to "round up" some small animals from a local farmer and

    make c o s t um e s .We have had to "tighten our bel ts" a l i t t l e

l a te ly , f inancial ly speaking. In th e past threemonths, the in te res t rate has r isen by 2.9% whichra ises our mortgage payments substant ial ly. Not onlytha t , but the weak dollar and th e strong Brit ishpound have pushed the exchange rate up to over $1.80per 1.00 ( i .e . , we pay $1.80 fo r every British poundwe buynot a very good deal for us.) Some economists are predicting an exchange rate of $2.00 perjCI.OO in the near future . But I know we ' l l get byjust fine. The Lord has always taken care of ourneeds through you, our fai thful supporters, and Iknow He s h a l l con t inue to do so . Thanks fo r yourpar t ic ipat ion with us in the ministry!
