What is bring your own device (BYOD)? Bring your own device (BYOD) refers to students bringing a personally owned device to school for the purpose of learning. A personally owned device is any technology brought into the school and owned by a student (or students family). 8. e-learning Research around BYOD Improved motivation and engagement Greater independence Personalised learning Improved critical thinkingGreater access to information, resources and experts Greater opportunities for collaboration in wider contexts including international connections 9. Rationale behind choosing BYOD Motivation and Engagement Technology is all around our students outside of school. Students are motivated and engaged when using technology. We want to encapture this motivation and engagement by allowing students to use their device to supplement their learning. Choice Learners are diverse. Learning styles and preferences vary and we wish to recognise this by allowing learners to choose the device and applications most suitable for them. 10. Rationale behind choosing BYOD Anywhere / Anytime Teaching and learning occurs inside and outside the classroom. We want to empower learners to utilise tools for learning no matter where they are. Personalised By having our own devices we can each have the tools, programs and applications that are most relevant to us and our classroom. Students desktops and browsers will be the way they want them. 11. Rationale behind choosing BYOD Preparing for the future Our students will be able to move into BYOD environments at college, university and the work place. We are empowering teachers and students to become digitally fluent and responsible users of technology. Flexible Learning We are working towards creating a flexible learning environment where the teacher is no longer seen as the fountain of all knowledge but rather working alongside the student as we facilitate collaborative and individual learning. 12. BYOD Trial Room 5 13. For the rest of their lives, our students will always have a computer with them. We have to teach them with this in mind!!! 14. Pre trial questions ? How many and what type of devices would we have? ? How would the class run/look with students using devices? ? What work would students use their devices for? ? Security of devices ? What effect would it have on the class with some students on devices and others working as normal? ? How would it effect teaching and marking? ? Would my personal reasons for wanting to be part of BYOD be justified? e.g. student motivation and engagement, increased work output, better presentation etc. 16. Pre trial questions answered How many and what type of devices would we have? - We started with 4 and ended up with 12 over the course of two terms. - A variety of types and sizes. IPads, tablets etc. Should be 9 inches. How would the class run/look with students using devices? - Better than expected. Increased engagement was evident from start. - Students really impressed me with their initiative and knowledge. - Students self managed collecting and putting away devices. - Students using devices in class has now become the norm. 17. Pre trial questions answered What work would students use their devices for? - Devices are now used for everything except maths and some draft writing. Some use for silent reading. How would it affect teaching and marking? - Once boundaries were set things were fine. - Devices have just become a normal part of the class. - Students are emailing work regularly to check or publish - Through Google docs marking and feedback will become much easier 18. Pre trial questions answered What effect would it have on the class with some on devices and others working as normal? - None. After the initial curiosity and novelty wore off students worked side by side as usual. - Those who have had devices take on responsibility and coach those who have just brought in new device. - Those that dont have personal devices have more opportunity to use school laptops. Security of devices - Students self manage and always lock up after use. - Take more care of personal devices. 19. Pre trial questions answered Would my personal reasons for wanting to be part of BYOD be justified? e.g. student motivation and engagement, increased work output, better presentation etc. Students stood up and impressed Obvious increase in motivation and engagement (particularly in boys) Students are taking more risks that they may not take on paper, especially with writing Students are working faster and neater Improved presentation levels Students settle into work quicker Easier to carry on with the learning that happens in the classroom at home Using the syndicate pod of computers the class can be one to one 20. New Buildings/Modern Learning Environments Installed Wireless Network Ruckus Implemented a LMS Ultranet Staff involved in ongoing PD to embrace e-learning and recognise the benefits of this for our studentsInnovative ways to integrate ICT into the curriculum Continued purchase of hardware 80 Netbooks, 3 Mac Books, 15 PCs, Video Camera, Digital Cameras SNUP School Network Upgrade Connect UFB ICT Extension each Term - Friday 24. Google Apps and G-Mail Google - free service which is hosted on their vast international infrastructure which is accessible from anywhere. Google allows for cloud services such as Google Drive with online versions of Word Powerpoint and Excel to be used both in school and away from school, and allowing collaboration between students and staff. Students have Gmail accounts user@fergusson.school.nz When students leave the school they have the ability to transfer their account to a private Google account allowing users to take their account with them to their next school, keeping a record of their learning / activity. A number of leading schools are heading in this direction. 25. Sonicwall BYOD Monitoring and Filtering What is Sonic Wall? It is a high end security management appliance that gives you very detailed control and visibility of exactly what is coming into, and going out of our school network. What can it do?Manage and control exactly what students can and cant do on the internet Monitor and report on current and historical use of the internet, specific pages that were visited Tightens up the overall use of any device using the school networkFunctions as a school wide antivirus, anti spam, anti malware gateway Protects the school from malicious attacks or attempts to hack into the school Allow / deny access to certain types of web pages, but also certain types of content i.e. blocking downloading of illegal movies /music/ applications - Facebook 26. New Server We replaced our existing server with a newer version with more storage, memory and processing power. We have replaced the server environment with a Windows Server environment which is mainstream and the preferred option for the majority of schools nationwide. 27. Educational Focus for BYOD We are aiming to develop the capability of young people as participants in a digital society or as digital citizens. That is someone who Is a confident and capable user of ICT Is literate in the languages, symbols and texts of ICT Is aware of the challenges presented by ICT and can manage them effectively Relates to others in positive, meaningful ways through ICT Demonstrates honesty and integrity in their use of ICT Respects the concepts of privacy and freedom of speech in a digital world Contributes and actively promotes the values of a digital citizen as defined above 28. How will BYOD look in the classroom? Students will have more ownership on how they access and submit work, and how they choose to communicate (be it digitally, on paper, or any mixture of the two).It isn't a case of giving the student access to technology and free reign to do whatever. Rather it is a case of structuring and providing learning opportunities with clear expectations. It is about allow and challenging the students to choose the right tool for the task. As a school we continue to find ways to integrate digital technologies into teaching and learning and BYOD assists us to enable anytime, anywhere access to enhance teaching, learning, collaboration and communication. 29. BYOD Questions How will the devices be monitored? Sonicwall BYOD Monitoring and Filtering. Best method is through teaching personal responsibility and how to be a good digital citizen. Will the device be used all the time?Devices will supplement student learning. There will always be a place for pen and paper. Students who bring a device will have a reduced stationery list. (Maths Book and Work Book) What type of devices? Mixture of tablets and net books (Mac or PC). Have wireless Internet capability. Screen sizes greater than 9.5 inches. (Refer to the device considerations in the brochure) Wireless or Wired? All student devices will be on our BYOD Student wireless network. This network will have time restrictions 8.30am to 3.30pm. InsuranceAll devices brought to school are the students responsibility. The schools insurance does not cover student owned devices. 30. BYOD Questions Security? Students will not be permitted to use devices before school or during breaks. The devices will be locked away during these times. The only exception to this is when students are using their device for the purpose of class work and are supervised by a teacher.Equity? This initiative is not compulsory. Fergusson Intermediate does have a number of devices available for students to access and students without a device will continue to access these school owned devices. The school will continue to purchase devices.User Agreement Students will need to sign a user agreement before bringing devices. 31. Your Questions?
