Our branch fittings meet mandatory design require-

ments for reinforced branch connections. They are pro-

vided with general outlet radius, so that the same fitting

can be used for different pipe sizes which makes them a

solution for many purposes. Design calculations can be

provided upon request.

36 Definitions of selected Technical Terms and Test Methods

Definitions of selected Technical Terms and Test Methods

1. Chemical Composition1.1 Product AnalysisChemical Analysis of the finished product carried out by the manufacturer

1.2 Heat AnalysisAnalysis of each heat carried out by the steel manufacturer to determine the percentages of the elements specified. Samples shall be taken during casting of a heat.

1.3 Chemical AnalysisDetailed chemical composition of material either determined by a spectroscope/spectrometer or obtained by wet analysis in a laboratory.

2. Mechanical testing2.1 Tensile TestFor determination of tensile strength, yield strength, elonga-tion and reduction of area.

2.2 Bend TestBend tests are carried out to ensure that the steel product has sufficient ductility to withstand bending without fracturing.

2.3 Flattening TestMethod for determining the ability of steel pipes to undergo plastic deformation by flattening. It may also be used to re-veal the defects in the tubes.

2.4 Hardness TestHardness is the resistance of a material to deformation, in-dentation or scratching. A number of methods of evaluat-ing hardness are employed. For example Brinell, Vickers and Rockwell.

2.5 Charpy Impact TestingA test designed to give information on how a specimen of a material will respond to a suddenly applied stress, e.g. shock. A notched test piece is normally employed and the two meth-ods in general use are either the Izod or Charpy test. The result is normally reported as the energy in ft.lbs. or KJ. required to fracture the test piece.

2.6 Drop Weight Tear Test (DWTT)This test method can be used to determine the appearance of propagating fractures in plain carbon or low-alloy pipe steels over the temperature range where the fracture mode changes from brittle to ductile. Similar to the Charpy Impact Test.

2.7 Creep and Stress RupturePractise of stressing material at different temperatures over a long period of time. Creep is a measure of long term plas-tic deformation. Stress rupture is the time to rupture at fixed stress.

3. Non Destructive Examination (NDE)3.1 Radiographic examination (X-ray)The use of x-rays or gamma-rays will be applied to detect dis-continuities in material and to demonstrate their images on a recording medium (e.g. film).

3.2 Ultrasonic ExaminationUltrasonic Testing uses high frequency sound energy to con-duct examinations and make measurements and to detect de-fects longitudinally or circumferentially.

3.3 Eddy Current ExaminationEddy current inspection is one of several NDT methods that use the principal of electromagnetism as the basis for con-ducting examinations

3.4 Magnetic Particle Examination (MPE)Magnetic particle inspection (MPI) is a non-destructive test-ing method used for defect detection. MPI uses magnetic fields and small magnetic particles (i.e. iron filings) to detect flaws in components of a ferromagnetic material.

3.5 Dye Penetrant ExaminationLiquid penetrant testing is a non-destructive method used to detect surface breaking defects in any nonporous mate-rial. Liquid penetrant is applied to the surface and is drawn into defects by capillary action. Once a preset of time has passed, excess penetrant is removed and developer applied to draw out penetrant from defects. Visual inspection is then performed. Visible and Fluorescent Liquid Penetrant Exami-nations are Non-Destructive methods of revealing disconti-nuities that are open to the surfaces of solid and essentially non-porous materials, ferrous or non-ferrous.

3.6 Flux Leakage ExaminationThis practice covers the applications and calibration of equip-ment using the flux leakage test method of detection of outer surface, inner surface and sub-surface discontinuities at/or near the surface in ferromagnetic materials. It is useful for preventive maintenance examination.

Definitions of selected Technical Terms and Test Methods

3.7 Hydrostatic testPressure test using a fluid (mostly water) to detect leakage or cracks.

4. Corrosion Tests4.1 Intergranular corrosion testStandard practice for detecting susceptibility to intergranular attack in austenitic stainless steels.

4.2 Hydrogen Induced Cracking (HIC)Test pieces are immersed in synthetic seawater with hydrogen sulphide bubbled through for a fixed duration. The step-wise cracking will be measured and reveals the susceptibility of the material to hydrogen attack in sour service.

4.3 Sulphide Stress Corrosion Cracking (SSCC)Laboratory testing of metals for resistance to Sulphide Stress Corrosion Cracking in H2S enviroments.

5. Metallography5.1 MacroetchControlled etching of the surface of a metallic specimen, in-tended to reveal a structure which is visible at low magnifica-tions.

5.2 Metallographic examinationThe primary objective of metallographic examination is to re-veal the constituents and structure of metals and their alloys by means of the microscope.
