Elevating Our Outdoor Gardens

At the helm of innovative thinking and implementation across our outdoor gardens is our Director of Outdoor Landscapes Andrea Brunsendorf. Brunsendorf came to Longwood in March 2018 from The Honorable Society of the Inner Temple in London; previously served as a gardener at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew in London; and has studied and trained at gardens across the globe, including South Africa, Germany, France, Botswana, Jerusalem, and the US … including a stint as an international ornamental horticultural trainee at Longwood.

Since her arrival, Brunsendorf and her team have worked to elevate our outdoor gardens, lending her imaginative, far-reaching perspective to their approach and design. Brunsendorf’s initial work has included the recent addition of a container display at the Main Fountain Garden’s Rectangular Basin to complement the infrastructure of the fountains and serve as a visual bridge between the Main Fountain Garden and adjacent Hillside Garden. Among many other efforts in the works, Brunsendorf and her team have also started work on introducing a multi-layered border and new ornamental features in the Idea Garden … an approach that will come to beautiful fruition in the coming seasons.

JULY

It’s go time. The long, lazy days of summer are upon us … which means even more time for new discoveries, especially with our nighttime offerings and Festive Friday event. Cool off with new fountain shows and find respite in gardens that not only provide shade from the summer sun, but invigorate the summer soul.

12

Page 23: Festival of Fountains SUMMER...Beyond the Season Enjoy our new approach to Summer Seasonal Highlights with pages dedicated to the very best of each month of Festival of Fountains

New Fountain Performances this Month

Pay tribute to our beloved Philadelphia with To Philly, With Love (July 5) and boogie down with Dolly Parton, Hank Williams, and more legends with Straight Up Country (July 6). See the complete fountain performance schedule at longwoodgardens.org/illuminated.

Keep Your Cool

While the season heats up at Longwood, keep cool in a number of shaded, tucked-away spaces that provide a beautiful respite from the summer sun. One such place for rest and relaxation is among the towering trees of Peirce’s Park, a woodland stretch dotted with benches that leads you to the peaceful Sylvan Fountain. A huge stand of Aesculus parviflora (bottlebrush buckeye) behind the fountain blooms with candelabra-like inflorescences in July. Look carefully and you’ll find a narrow mulch path through the grove, where you can stand within a shaded bubble of blooms and hear the splashing of the fountain jets.

Take a Hike

From shaded woodland paths to sunny wildflower-lined trails, our Gardens provide perfect spots for relaxed strolls as well as more energetic treks. Spanning 86 acres and three miles of walking and hiking trails, the Meadow Garden is not only a fantastic place for a walk … it’s also a shining example of best practices in ecological garden design. While it’s stunning year-round, the Meadow Garden and its native wildflowers awash in its layered terrain of fields to wetlands are breathtaking this month. Take in the view from the fully accessible, partially shaded Meadow Boardwalk; the serene Meadow Valley Walk past an old quarry and spring house; the East Meadow Hike to Hawk Point, an ideal vista for bird viewing; and the all-encompassing Outer Meadow Hike that winds along the outer edges of the Meadow Garden with panoramic views and quiet corners for contemplation.

Explore the Meadow Garden and examine its natural lands during Meet Us in the Meadow on September 21. Learn more on page 17 of this brochure.

Join us as Longwood and The Greater Philadelphia Dahlia Society host the Greater Philadelphia Dahlia Society Show on Saturday, September 21 from 1–9 pm and Sunday, September 22 from 9 am–6 pm. Brilliant dahlia blooms of many types, sizes, and colors fill the Conservatory during this competitive show (free with Gardens Admission).

The Bounty of Our Idea Garden

All summer long, you’ve enjoyed fresh seasonal fare in The Terrace … but did you know that many of the herbs, fruits, and vegetables we serve come from our very own Idea Garden? Using as many organic practices as possible, we grow and harvest seasonal goodies from blackberries to beets. While crops can be harvested throughout the year, September is an especially fruitful month, as we harvest such late summer crops as okra, peppers, and Asian pears, and then transition to such fall crops as cabbage and brussels sprouts.

All of the produce harvested from the Idea Garden, which amounts to about 4,000 pounds a year, serves as just one example of our commitment to reinforcing the concept of locally grown food … with delicious results.
