Rigoletto – Il Trovatore – La Traviata

“On and on, without a break! To do justice to a truth that is frantically changing! Rigoletto, Trovatore, Traviata, composed in two or three years! Hope to have finally found the ultimate. These are the living remains of what no longer is.” This is how the eponymous hero in Franz Werfel’s deeply knowledgeable “Verdi – A Novel of the Opera” visualizes his completed works in a feverish dream. As fatalistic as Werfel’s Verdi sees his tril-ogy: the triumvirate of Rigoletto, Trovatore and La Traviata really is his masterpiece. The plot of these operas differs radi-cally from most other operas in that Verdi sympathizes with society’s outcasts: the protagonists in Rigoletto, Trovatore and La Traviata are a hunchback, a gypsy and a prostitute respec-tively. The “popular trilogy” also stands out because by that time Verdi had reached such an acute understanding of his medium that it allowed him to write the perfect opera using a simple and straightforward musical language. Minimal is also the set at the Festspielhaus. We take serious the compositional and textual unity of these three operas and conceptualized them as an interwoven trilogy.

Nabucco (short for “Nebuchadnezzar”) marked a new epoch in Italian opera. Hadn’t the German composer Otto Nicolai refused to accept the proposal of the libretto, would have Verdi ever written another opera after his personal tragedy and artistic failure in 1841? Suffering from of depression, Verdi was ready to give up music altogether. With Nabucco, his first successful opera, Verdi managed to free himself from the specter of his failure and to incorporate – in a stroke of genius – in this tra-ditional bel-canto style opera all elements of a musical drama, the main aesthetic conception that was going to underlie all of Verdi’s works. Erl’s Verdi production will reflect this combina-tion of bel canto tradition and dramatic truth. The young singer Anna Princeva is probably as good an Abigaile as Giuseppina Strepponi, Verdi’s first Abigaile, was 170 years ago.

Symphony No. 3 in E-flat major, op. 55 “Eroica”

The first chord of Beethoven’s 1st Symphony is pure revolu-tion. How little sympathy Beethoven had left for the revolution can be seen in his rededication of the 3rd Symphony. How-ever, the Symphony No. 1 marks the beginning of Beethoven’s compositional revolution, which was deliberately suspended in the 2nd Symphony to create a contrast, and resurfaces full force in the 3rd.

With the middle part the “Beethoven Plus” concert series is re-starting a double tradition. Firstly, hundred years ago a symphonic concert was unthinkable without vocal recitals or chamber music. ➝

Every day of every year brings plenty of reasons for anniver-saries. Where to start celebrating and where to stop? In 2013 we will perform Verdi in a house that has the ideal acoustics for the composer’s operas. And what a nice coincidence that the world is also celebrating the two-hundredth anniversary of Verdi’s birth in 2013! That Wagner, who too was born in 1813, will not be heard in Erl this summer is obviously un-thinkable. The Festival Orchestra and the Musicbanda Franui (which happens to celebrate it’s 20th anniversary in 2013) will meet at the opening of the Tyrolean Festival Erl 2013 to mix an exciting Wagner cocktail to make sure that the “other” jubilarian, whom the Tyrolean Festival Erl owes so much, will not be shortchanged. Two sound worlds will unite in line with the concept of Gesamtkunstwerk.

According to Franz Winter, the “Heiligenstadt Symphonies” contain a duality that captures the harmony between the expression and the perception of Heiligenstadt’s landscape. Beethoven’s Symphony No. 2 kind of describes the nature of the symphony, of humans and – if you will (in the 6th) – of nature itself. Beethoven’s music is also (not yet) meant to be taken literally.

Just like a sorbet that is served during a multi-course dinner the middle part of a concert serves to cleanse the ear so that the next part may be enjoyed with a fresh perspective. This contemporary middle part is the second tradition that is being revived in 2013. Introduced back in 2001, when all nine of Beethoven’s symphonies were performed under Gustav Kuhn and his “Beethoven Fever”, it was enthusiastically received by the audience. In 2013, internationally acclaimed pianists and soloists will perform during the middle part.

The chronology of the program goes to show that our philoso-phy is inspired by music alone and not by any dramaturgical/literary theories or extra-musical ideas. With our 2007 pro-duction of Wagner’s Ring cycle in exact chronological order of composition, we demonstrated how important an historic performance order can be. Beethoven’s two symphonies, how-ever, are of equal perfection thus obviating the need for a historically correct order. It is interesting to note that while the Adagio is missing in both symphonies, the introduction and 2nd mo6pmvement of the 7th are divine and even for Bee-thoven unique. The same holds true for the four well-balanced movements of the 8th.

Whether it was fate knocking at the doors in the 5th Symphony or whether Beethoven returned to a more classic style in the 4th is not as interesting as the 4th’s slow and dramatic Ada-gio introduction that has little to do with traditional Adagio introductions, and the genius transition from the 3rd into the final movement of the 5th Symphony. So much has been written about Beethoven’s 9th, that we will keep it short here. The in our opinion right, and with all its repetitions complete, form of the 9th’s second movement is so well balanced that from a musical standpoint it seamlessly follows the 7th and 8th. The cello and bass recitative – which resembles the bass baritone solo that comes later – leads more or less straight to Gustav Mahler. In order to comprehend the musical genius that was Beethoven there is only one thing to say: he was ahead of his time by almost one hundred years …

Originally the “Cabassi & Friends” series had a very simple idea behind it: Davide Cabassi – a “child” of the Festival – was to invite musicians of his choice and perform three concerts with them. The unique idea is in its fifth year now and reveals who the real friends are. Béla Bartók and Leoš Janácek are two names that keep emerging, two friends who have been invited many times and have become steady companions of Cabassi. First-time invitee this year: Karol Szymanowski, the master of Polish impressionism. Additional focus this year: George Gershwin. Cabassi’s curtain-raiser concert features Li-nus Roth, Echo winner of 2006, who will debut in Erl with his Stradivari Dancla.

Two works by Béla Bartók, the Violin Sonata and the Trio Contrasts (officially commissioned by clarinetist Benny Good-man), form the framework around which this concert is built. On his second evening with friends, Davide Cabassi will pre-sent an American in Paris: Geoge Gershwin. Darius Milhaud was one of the “Les Six” Gershwin had asked for composition lesson although by that time he already was the “first-rate Gershwin” who had earned the respect of such luminaries as Igor Stravinsky (“How much money do you make in a year, Mr. Gershwin?”) and Alban Berg (“Mr. Gershwin, music is music!”). Claude Debussy, the third name of the evening, is another musician who had greatly inspired Gershwin. This inspiration culminated in Gershwin’s An American in Paris which begins with a very much Debussy influenced “walking theme” which appears throughout the piece.

Once big names of the Austro-Hungarian late romantic era, Goldmark, Marx and Kornauth are composers that have been largely forgotten today. Michael Kupfer is rescuing them from oblivion by bringing their unrecognized and underappreciated works back into the limelight. With Barber’s Hermit Songs, Emily Righter will make her Erl debut with another rarity. Mé-lodies by Reynaldo Hahn, a remarkable composer whose works capture the carefreeness of “la belle époque”, will serve as an exciting contrast to the Austrian composers of the same era.

With “Ethno Emotions” Paul Engel is paying a musical tribute to the strong cultural individuality and the natural musical power and spontaneity of indigenous people across the globe. Mr. Engel’s “Ethno Performances” are a new creative adventure that combine 30 years experience as a composer with modern ideas and topics. Paul Engel puts to music texts by such per-sonalities as Du Fu, Rabindranath Tagore, William Shakespeare, and contemporaries like Kurt Kreiler and Gudrun Schön-Stoll. This very personal evening will – as is usual at the Blaue Quelle – explore and cross musical boundaries.

Chamber music is one of the focal points of the Orchestra of the Tyrolean Festival Erl. Small ensembles that are incredibly versatile and captivating form quickly in between rehearsal periods. If there is no repertory that fits comfortably, the musi-cians simply arrange one. Francesco Iorio is especially fast (and talented) at this. Together with his orchestra colleagues he will perform a roller coaster ride through the history of music that includes everything from Gregorian chorales to Astor Piaz-zolla. Girolamo Deraco also wrote a commissioned work for the musicians of the orchestra that will premiere that evening.

Rhapsody in Blue (Adaption by Jean-Francois Taillard)

Mussorgsky’s most famous piano composition was published some 40 years after the composer’s death. The piece is known today primarily through the orchestral version created by Mau-rice Ravel. Many other musicians have orchestrated Mussorg-sky’s piano suite, including Gomalan Brass, Davide Cabassi and Jean-Francois Taillard, whose arrangement of the Rhapsody in Blue was met with rave reviews. The centerpiece of the program will be the original composition of Leoš Janácek’s Capriccio. We are proud to once more present two new singers who will perform an at least partly very individual repertoire on the third Recital Evening of the season. The bass Yasushi Hirano is well known in Austria for his performances in Vienna; the young Russian Svetlana Kotina, however, is a complete new-comer. What they have in common is their admiration for Gustav Mahlers, whose Farewell from The Song of Earth is a highlight of the entire lieder repertoire. With songs by Rach-maninoff, Rimsky-Korsakov and Tchaikovsky, Svetlana Kotina will present music from her homeland; with the “Ullmann Cycle” bassist Yasushi Hirano will perform rarely heard works.

Five musicians in costumes will play, sing, dance and take on the roles of Aida characters in a fast sequence of music and readings. This unusual performance is designed to introduce Verdi’s masterpiece to new audiences, including children, while at the same time remaining highly entertaining for those who are familiar with Aida. The fourteen delicate arrangements for brass quintet (among them the overture, the triumphal march and the ballet performance) are linked via text and acting, and form the main ingredient of a highly enjoyable evening that is both serious and comical.

In 1986 Gustav Kuhn made his debut as opera director with the Flying Dutchman in Trieste (stage design and costumes: Peter Pabst); in 1993 he developed the “Hall Opera” series for Suntory Hall Opera in Tokyo; Kuhn stayed with the Salzburg Festival until 1997 (1989 Un ballo in maschera; 1992, 1994 and 1997 La clemenza di Tito). From 1983 to 1985 Kuhn served as general music director at the Bonn Opera, followed by engagements as head conductor of the Teatro dell’Opera in Rome and later as artistic director of the Teatro di San Carlo in Naples. From 1990 to 1994 Kuhn headed the music festival in Macerata. Gustav Kuhn has been artistic director of “Neue Stimmen” (New Voices), an international singing competition by the German Bertelsmann Foundation in Gütersloh, since 1987. In 1992 Kuhn founded the Accademia di Montgral, head-quartered at the Convento dell’Angelo in Lucca (Tuscany) since 2000. In 1997 Kuhn founded the Tyrolean Festival Erl. After working on Wagner’s Ring for several years, Kuhn took the production on tour for the first time in 2005 (Santander) and produced the now legendary 24-hour Ring. The same year Dr. Hans Peter Haselsteiner agreed to become president of the Tyrolean Festival Erl; the construction of the Festspielhaus is largely owed to his efforts and commitment. By the end of summer 2012 Gustav Kuhn will have directed and conducted all of Wagner’s grand operas at Erl’s Passionsspielhaus. The opening of the Festspielhaus is scheduled for December 2012.

Gustav Kuhn has been artistic director of the Haydn Orches-tra of Bolzano and Trento since January 2003. In 2010 Kuhn instituted the South Tyrol Festival (Toblach / Dobbiaco) at the urging of Governor Dr. Luis Durnwalder.

Gustav Kuhn’s compositions include orchestra works, mass-es and solo pieces; his instrumentation of Janácek’s Diary of One Who Disappeared met with great acclaim at the Opéra National de Paris (released at Edition Peters). Kuhn has been performing the Delirium concert series in his hometown of Salzburg annually since 2007. Gustav Kuhn’s recording are available at col legno, BMG, EMI, CBS, Capriccio, Supraphon, Orfeo, Koch / Schwann, Coreolan, ARTE NOVA and others.

Born in Salzburg, Gustav Kuhn studied conducting with Hans Swarovsky, Bruno Maderna and Herbert von Karajan at the Conservatories in Vienna and Salzburg and graduated from the Salzburg University in philosophy, psychology and psy-chopathology. Kuhn was only 24 years old when he won the prestigious international conducting competition of the Aus-trian Broadcasting Corporation (ORF).

From 1970 to 1977 Kuhn worked as choirmaster and con-ductor at the Istanbul Opera House, then as 1st Chapel Master at the Dortmund Opera House. During this time he already gave guest performances in Palermo, Naples and Bologna. Later he had engagements as guest director in Rome, Florence, Venice and Zurich. Gustav Kuhn also conducted the Berlin Philhar-monics, the Dresden State Orchestra, the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, the London Philharmonic Orchestra and the London Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the Orchestra Filarmonica della Scala in Milan, the Orchestre Na-tional de France in Paris, the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome, the NHK Orchestra in Tokyo, and, last but not least, the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. In 1974 Kuhn found-ed the Institute for Aleatoric Music in Salzburg; in 1977 he made his debut at the Vienna State Opera with Richard Strauss’ Elektra; only a year later, in 1978, he debuted at the Bavarian State Opera and the Salzburg Festival; the following season Maestro Kuhn made his conducting debut at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden in London and was engaged as General Music Director in Bern; in 1980 Kuhn opened the Glynde-bourne Festival. More debuts followed: 1981 with Fidelio in Chicago; 1982 with Così fan tutte at the Paris Opera; 1984 with Tannhäuser at Milan’s Scala; 1986 with Un ballo in maschera at Arena di Verona. In 1986 Gustav Kuhn started to direct and produce operas to achieve a greater artistic union between a work’s visual and musical components. Choir Academyof the Tyrolean Festival Erl

Founded in 2007, the Choir Academy is on par with the Fes-tival Orchestra. The Choir Academy, too, offers its members a holistic development as artists, and focuses on strengthening the individual voice within the choral setting.

Artistic director of the young ensemble is Gustav Kuhn. The Choir Academy has a base of 32 members but can vary in size depending on the repertoire being performed, which ranges from a cappella music to great concert and opera productions.

The Choir Academy of the Tyrolean Festival Erl places great emphasis on the quality and training of the individual voice. Singers receive significant individual attention, making it pos-sible for singers to expand their musical and vocal potential.

The Choir Academy’s concert repertoire includes Verdi’s Messa da Requiem, Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis, Mahler’s Sym-phony No. 8, Joseph Haydn’s Nelson Mass, and Gioacchino Rossini’s Petite Messe Solennelle. Under Marco Medved, the Choir Academy performed in opera productions of The Mas-tersingers of Nuremberg, Fidelio, Electra, The Magic Flute and The Flying Dutchman, Tannhäuser, Parsifal, Lohengrin and Tosca as well as in a cappella concerts.


Founded in the summer of 1999, the Orchestra generated en-thusiastic audiences and critical acclaim in its first year at the Tyrolean Festival Erl. The Orchestra is an amalgamation of the finest talents, experienced musicians from renowned international orchestras, chamber music specialists and teach-ers who share a passion for classical works and a dedication to musical perfection.

Every summer and winter the musicians meet up at the Tyrolean Festival Erl or for guest performances to perform the magnificent works of Wagner and Strauss as well as romantic and classical concert pieces. With Gustav Kuhn as spiritus rector and musical director, the orchestra has received lavish praise and great international acclaim.

The Orchestra’s repertory is extremely diverse and includes Richard Wagner’s ten dramatic operas, operas by Strauss, Mo-zart, Beethoven and Rossini, Beethoven’s symphonies and a wide range of classical music from baroque to romantic, as well as contemporary compositions and premieres.

The “Convento dell’Angelo” near Lucca (Tuscany) has been the artistic center of the Accademia di Montegral since October 2000. The way the Accademia works is that certain topics are chosen which are then discussed and debated by students and renowned experts (e.g. elocutionists, répétiteurs, conduc-tors, directors, etc.) during class. The Accademia also provides practice-oriented information on a variety of topics such as casting, fees, etc.

The Accademia offers its high-level support not only to talented young singers but also to artists from related fields such as instrumentalists, conductors, composers and direc-tors. This way it is possible for the Accademia di Montegral to produce and perform complete opera productions itself. Some of the Accademia di Montegral’s esteemed honorary members include Francisco Araiza, Albert Dohmen, Gertrud Ottenthal, Peter Pabst and Renato Bruson. In today’s competitive free market young professionals like singers, conductors, répétiteurs, stage designers and costume designers often find themselves left out in the cold and there-fore ultimately doomed to fail. What once was the respon-sibility of theater and music directors, namely the support and professional education of young artists, today is often subject to their arbitrariness and the dictate of the entertain-ment industry. In addition, the opera is in the throes of an economic and structural crisis: high operating costs, expensive technology, grand trappings, a sluggish – and sometimes hos-tile – bureaucracy, and incompetent opera makers add to the already challenging situation. As a result there are many poorly trained and easy-to-replace young musicians, and, ultimately, a decreasing interest in opera, especially among younger peo-ple. The Accademia di Montegral sees its purpose in providing support and education as well as promoting the art form of the opera. The groundwork was laid in 1987 when conductor and director Gustav Kuhn founded the Accademia in Italy. Later, sister institutions were set up in Germany (1993) and in Japan (1994; Tokyo Suntory-Hall).

The Accademia di Montegral is located inside the Convento dell’Angelo, a monastery of the Passionists, a Roman Catholic religious order. After hundreds of years at the Convento, which is beautifully set high above Lucca, a shortage of new priests and the dilapidated condition of the monastery forced the Pas-sionists to leave the Convento in the 1990ies and look for a new use of the building. In 2000 Gustav Kuhn’s Accademia di Montegral found its home in the Convento.

The Passionists, who live their faith through commitment to those who suffer, are dedicated to social work and fight-ing poverty worldwide. The Passionists of Brazil have several projects running in Salvador, Itabuna and Jequie to offer street children a better future and an alternative to life on the streets.

Musical diversity, unconventional views and a commitment to art outside the mainstream industry have defined the produc-tions of the Tyrolean Festival Erl from the very beginning. Gustav Kuhn’s quest to create an unmistakable signature style for the Festival led to the formation of a dedicated design studio in 2007. As head of the design studio, Lenka Radecky is responsible for both the technical and artistic aspects of costume design. Mrs. Radecky has surrounded herself with a highly qualified team of costume interpreters, tailors and as-sistants to ensure that no detail is missed.

The design studio of the Tyrolean Festival Erl combines highest demands on quality and expertise with deep knowl-edge, highly specialized work experience, and a passion for (opera) materials. The design studio of the Tyrolean Festival Erl is experienced in all aspects of costume design and produc-tion. In addition to designing for the Tyrolean Festival Erl, the design studio continues to work with other clients and also of-fers bespoke tailoring for private customers, including evening wear, bridal gowns, historic costumes and other handcrafts. All designing and sewing is done by hand and with great attention to even the minutest detail.

Erl’s new festival house has been inaugurated at the opening of the first Winter Festival on 26 December 2012. The Winter Festival, which is scheduled to run yearly from St. Stephen’s Day (26 Dec) through Three Kings Day (6 Jan), will offer operas and classical music at a time when many opera houses in Europe are closed.

The construction of the Festspielhaus and all necessary infra-structure (parking garage etc.) was made possible largely by the Haselsteiner Family Private Foundation who covers the lion share of the estimated 36 million Euros in construction cost. The Foundation also pays for all working expenses as well as the cost arising from programming in the winter. In October 2011, the Tyrolean Festival Erl received eight million Euros in funding from the Tyrolean State Government to help finance the project. The Federal Government also granted eight million Euros in support of the Festival.

Festspielhaus

Set like a solitaire to the right of the Passionsspielhaus, the new Festspielhaus is an architectural stroke of genius for Erl. Despite its extraordinary architecture and unique aesthetics, the new festival house is not competing for presence with the white Passionsspielhaus, which is still dominating the scene in the summer. The buildings form a unity despite their dif-ferent appearances. While the Passionsspielhaus seems to be disappearing into the mountain, the Festspielhaus seems to be escaping from it. The new house has a very distinctive person-ality, which is especially evident in the winter. This is when the white Passionsspielhaus fades into the surroundings and the dark Festspielhaus stands out against the white landscape. The staircase leads visitors inside and to the asymmetrical and dynamic-looking foyer whose large windows open the dialogue with the surrounding nature and the neighboring Passionsspielhaus. Despite the openness, the house seems also comforting and offers private spaces for communication. A second staircase that is not immediately visible to the entering visitor leads to the second foyer located above the box office and cloakroom. Both foyers give access to the auditorium. With its beautiful wood paneling, warm colors and unique structure, the auditorium keeps the audience focus on the stage. Every seat enjoys full view of the stage. The 160-square meter orchestra pit is the world’s largest and offers plenty of space for

Erl (pop. 1,450) is located in the North-Tyrolean Unterinntal Valley, on the border with Bavaria and about 15 kilometers from Kufstein. Tyrol’s northernmost and lowest town once was a Roman estate known as Praedium Aurelianum. A Mithra stone with the inscription “DIM PRO SALUTE” was found dur-ing excavations at the parish and shows that Romans settled here as early as 300 AD. The first time Erl was mentioned in an official document, the Notitia Arnonis, a list of the pos-sessions of Salzburg’s archbishopric, is 788 AD. Erl and Erl’s parish, which is dedicated to Saint Andreas the Apostle, were destroyed several times during the course of history. Under Emperor Maximilian Erl, together with Rattenberg, Kitzbühel and Kufstein, was finally ceded to Tyrol in 1504. Erl is one of the Inntal Valley’s oldest villages.

Erl’s main attractions include the “Blaue Quelle” (Blue Spring) which has an average flow rate of 700 liters per second, Trockenbach waterfall, the legendary “Erler Herz”, a heart-shaped mountain pass, and the Calvary overlooking the Inntal valley. Great and easily accessible vista mountains are Kranz- horn (1,367 m) with its two summit crosses, and Spitzstein (1,596 m). The former Gasthof Zollhaus Inn at the wooden Inn bridge boasts a memorial plaque for Adolf Pichler, the famous geologist and local historian who was born here in 1819.

Erl – The Passion Play and Festival Town in Tyrol

The tradition of performing religious plays can be traced back to 1613 when pilgrims on their way from Munich to Altöt-ting stopped by in Erl to see an Easter play. The oldest text was written by the Augsburg mastersinger Sebastian Wild and dates from the 16th century. Built between 1957 and 1959 on plans by Robert Schuller, a student of Clemens Holzmeister, the Passionsspielhaus has a tiered stage and is Austria’s largest orchestra theater. The Erl Passion Play, which is acted by six hundred local villagers, has been staged every six years since the theater’s completion. To this day some 800,000 visitors have come to see the unique performances in Erl. The music, which has changed several times in the course of the Play’s history and included everything from religious chants to the wonderful compositions of Cesar Bresgen and Wolfram Wag-ner, is always performed by local musicians.

In 2013 Erl will celebrate the 400th anniversary of its Pas-sion Play. For this occasion the famous Tyrol-born writer Felix Mitterer was commissioned to write a new text. Director will be Markus Plattner from Schwaz, stage design will be by Annelie Büchner, costume design by Lenka Radecky.
