Introduction- Presenting The Fiction Factory Program

Term Three of The Fiction Factory has a focus on fairy tales. Fairy tales are a great way to teach young children lessons that are hidden within the narrative. We can take the example of Little Red Riding Hood; don’t stray off the moral path or talk to strangers. This isn’t to say that you need to highlight what those hidden lessons are, kids are pretty good at figuring it out when they are ready. We still start the session with a book each week however it is not paramount that you use one at the end, especially those who present sessions that last only 30 minutes. In fact, I hope that with the inclusion of several new activities and the revisions made from previous years, you’ll find more than enough to do to carry over for a 45min+ session. The activities and movement stories are things that the children would not normally do in day care centres so make sure you do those and if you have time at the end read a book to calm them down.

What is required of me? Using your individual talents, it is your job to bring the program to life. Each theme has been designed to fit in with the key learning areas of pre-schools so it is

important to stick to the written program. That being said, one should never be afraid to expand on the program should they of the children feel inspired to. The script is there to act as the foundation for your presentation that has proven to work in the field. However it is your individual style and imagination that will take it to that next level. As I always say, if you think you can present it better than what is written, DO IT.

Always ensure staff at the centre understands that they are to help you with supervision. This can be as simple as asking at the start of each session “Do you think you will be able to join in today? I’d love your help with some of the activities.”

Don’t hold back when reading the books. Anyone can read a book, but only you can make it exciting and unique. Tempo and pitch changes, character voices, a range in dynamics, and making brief observations that the children can focus and interact with you on will make all the difference.

Try your best to ensure every child gets a turn at doing something. Whether it is answering a question or wearing a costume, even the shyest children like to have a go.

Foot Stories: 10 min approx The introduction to each foot story is the same every week, though this term we begin to stray

away from the foot stories time to time and focus on other activities. Thus will hopefully keep things fresh for both the children and you as a presenter. The general repetition within the foot stories is to help build confidence to contribute to the stories later at around this time of year. You will have noticed by now that the group will start saying parts of the story with you.

If you feel you need to make changes to the start of the story feel free to change the exercises that the mice do. Another option is to mix up what they are doing and see if any one notices. Eg. “Once upon a time there were two little mice and at the start of this story they were playing tennis…making a cake…fast asleep snoring!”

To challenge the children in the older rooms try pretending the alarm clock is broken. What could they use instead?

Before each story you may like to ask the children where they think the mice will go? What would they do there? Who would they see?

Or more specific the mice are going to the park today, what should they play on?

Movement stories: 10-15 min approx

Page 4: Fiction …  · Web viewWeek 7 Far Far Away. Week 8 Environmental Sustainability. Week 9 The Magic Hoop. Week 10 Growing Up. Week 11 The Emperors New Clothes Introduction- Presenting

The movement stories need to be memorized however if they are not memorized word for word it won’t matter. It is more important that you are confident in what you are saying. If the presenter is unsure of the story it is hard for the children to really imagine they are in the story as they move and they will soon get bored.

Establish a word that everyone understands means they have to stop what they are doing and look at you. Eg. “Freeze”

Allow moments for free dance / movement Introduce the movement concepts before you begin the story eg. “Today we are going to move

on different levels. Can you show me with your hands where a high level is? What about a middle level? Low?”

Perform in all rooms. Some toddlers may benefit from a shortened version but don’t be scared to try it with them, they love to move!

Whose House?: 5 min approx While singing the song pass the pictures around the group so they can have a good look at them. Ask who they think lives in the house? What is their favourite room in the house? Does anyone live with them? Is it a happy place to live? Would you like to live there?

Fairy Tale Lucky-Dip Use the Fiction Factory storybook and the lucky dip bags. Each bag has a set of pictures inside. Bag 1 has a character, Bag 2 has a location, Bag 3 an emotion, Bag 4 a reason for the emotion, and Bag 5 an action. Your job is to make it work as a story. An example is; Once upon a time there was a dog. Who lived at the beach. He was feeling sad. Because it was raining outside. So he stayed inside and read a book. It doesn’t matter if they don’t make a whole lot of sense, the kids find it really funny when

there are elephants living in igloos and monkeys having birthday parties. Just be sure the pictures go back into their corresponding bags.

The activity takes a total of about 10 minutes depending on how many times it is repeated. Try for at least two.

Week One – Careful What You Wish For

Welcome SongSit down and take a look, we’re going to read a book.

Sit down and take a look, with stories from ‘The Fiction Factory’

Have you ever wished for something? Or wanted something so much that you kept asking mummy or daddy for it? Today all of our stories are about people who would like something very much but may or may not get it. Let’s see what happens…

Book: Stanley Paste by Aaron Blabey

Draw and Tell Story: No Pets Allowed by Richard Thompson

(The children in both the toddler and kinder rooms love these types of stories however it is important you are quite familiar with the story in order to keep the flow going. You may also want to get them to keep it a secret if they can guess what the picture is. Also be sure to give the picture to the room leader to hang up in the room. An example might be to say):

Our next story is called a Draw & Tell story. It’s a little different so I’m going to need everyone’s help. I’m not just going to tell you a story, but I’m going to draw some pictures to go along with it. What I want you to do is try and guess what it is that I’m drawing – but only at the very END of the story. So if you think you know what it is that I’m drawing, and I’m still telling the story, keep it a secret, keep it inside, and I’ll give you a chance to guess right at the very end. Can you check that you’re listening ears are on for me?

Timmy had a dream. More than anything in the whole world, he wanted to have a pet.

But Timmy had a problem. Timmy and his family lived in a very small apartment building here… [DRAW apartment building (1)] in the city.

When he asked his mother if he could have a pet, she said, “I don’t know, Timmy. I don’t know what the rules are about pets in this building. We will have to go and talk to the landlord…”

They went to talk to the man who owned the apartment building, and he said “I don’t know Mrs Johnson. That doesn’t sound like a very good idea to me. See these plants growing along the walk? [DRAW plants (2)] I worked very hard to get those plants to grow, and I’m afraid that if your boy gets a pet like a cat or a dog, they would dig up those plants. No. I’ll have to say that the rule in this apartment building will have to be… NO PETS ALLOWED. [DRAW the first X (3)]

But Timmy wasn’t about to give up that easily. Every day, he came with his mother with a new idea.

“How about a gerbil, Mum? Could I have a gerbil?” “No, Timmy. Gerbils are not allowed”. [From here continue to DRAW an X for each ‘not allowed’]

“How about a turtle? He would stay right in his turtle dish.” “No, Timmy. Turtles are not allowed.”

What other kinds of pets did Timmy suggest? [Open this up to the group] A bird? Birds were not allowed… a monkey? Monkeys were not allowed… a snake? Nope. Snakes were not allowed either. [At this point take suggestions and DRAW only up to the 6th X]

Poor Timmy! It looked like he was never going to have a pet. And that was very sad. But do you know what made it even sadder? All of his friends seemed to have pets! Every time he went out to play or went for a walk, he would see one of his friends and that friend would have a pet. One day he was walking by the school and there was his friend, Maggie, walking her dog. [DRAW the first section of ‘walking’ (4)]Another time, he was in the park and he met Christopher walking his cat. [DRAW the second section of ‘walking’]Every time he went to the corner store, there would be Sarah out walking her bird. [DRAW the last section of ‘walking’] All of Timmy’s friends had pets, and he didn’t have one!

One day when Timmy was out walking, he found something. He looked down and there on the sidewalk was a shiny gold coin. [DRAW coin (5)]

Timmy picked that coin up, put it in his pocket and ran straight to the pet store. [DRAW pet store (6)]

He ran into the store saying, “Pet store man! Pet store man! What can I buy with a gold coin? I found a gold coin! What can I buy at your store with a gold coin?”

“Well, young man,” said the pet store man, “You came in on the right day. Today we are having a big sale, and for only one gold coin, you can buy this beautiful tropical and this lovely crystal fish bowl for her to live in. [DRAW fish and fish bowl (7)] Both for only one gold coin!”

Now, Timmy knew that fish were not allowed, but this fish was a very tiny fish. And it was very cute. He couldn’t resist. He bought the fish. He took it home. And do you know what his mum said? “NOT ALLOWED…” [DRAW the final X (3)]

Page 8: Fiction …  · Web viewWeek 7 Far Far Away. Week 8 Environmental Sustainability. Week 9 The Magic Hoop. Week 10 Growing Up. Week 11 The Emperors New Clothes Introduction- Presenting

Timmy had to take the fish back to the pet store. But the pet store man would take the fish back.

“I’m sorry,” he said. “All sales are final. You’ll have to keep the fish.”

What was Timmy going to do? He couldn’t keep the fish. He couldn’t bring it back. Eventually, he thought of a plan. He took the fish down to the ocean [DRAW half of the ‘water’ section (8)] and threw it into the water.

“Goodbye little fish!” he called. “I hope you will be happy in the ocean. I really wanted to keep you as my pet, but… pets are not allowed.”

Not long after that, Timmy’s family moved away from that apartment building. They bought a house out in the country. They loaded up all their stuff. They took a ferry across the bay [DRAW second half of the ‘water’ section (9)] and headed off into the country [DRAW line ‘into the country’ (10)] toward their new home.

All along the way, Timmy was saying to himself, “Maybe now I will get to have a pet. Maybe now I will get to have a pet.”

But when they got to their new house, [DRAW house (11)] Timmy’s heart sank! There were plants growing along the walk! [DRAW plants (12)] It was just like at the apartment building.Timmy wasn’t too hopeful, but he asked his mum just in case. And surprisingly, she said “Why, Timmy! Of course you can have a pet now. We are in our own house. You can have any kind of pet you like.”

Timmy yelled “YAAAAAYYYYYYY!!!” And he went running outside.

He discovered something very cool about his new house…there was a stream [DRAW stream (13)] running right through the backyard.

In that stream, Timmy found something that he thought would make an excellent pet, and he took it home. Do you know what he found?

That’s right! He found a CROCODILE. Do you think his mother let him keep it?

Movement Story: The Riddle adapted from ‘The Story Sack’ Tanya Batt

(For this story you will need an apple. Cut it in half *horizontally with the stem on top* before you get to the centre as it is not safe to bring a knife with you. Keep the apple hidden until the end of the story, and be wary that when you are showing the children the star to make sure they don’t try to take a bite out of the apple!)

Once upon a time a long time ago there were two children who decided that they would like to give their parents a present.

So they found their parents and asked, “We want to get you a present, what is something that you would really like?”

Page 9: Fiction …  · Web viewWeek 7 Far Far Away. Week 8 Environmental Sustainability. Week 9 The Magic Hoop. Week 10 Growing Up. Week 11 The Emperors New Clothes Introduction- Presenting

Their parents thought hard. They scratched their heads. [Scratch the top of your head with one hand]They scratched their tummies. [Scratch your stomach with both hands]They scratched under their arms. [Alternate hands and scratch under both of your arms]

They said, “We would really like a little round house, without any windows or doors, a chimney on top and a star in the middle.

The children wondered. “A little round house, without any windows or doors, a chimney and a star in the middle? I wonder where we should start looking?” First they went to the shops.

Run, Run, Run, Run, Run, Run, STOP! [With knees bent in front of you in a sitting position, run feet along the ground before stopping]Stretch! [Stretch with both arms extended above your head]Run, Run, Run, Run, Run, Run, STOP! [With knees bent in front of you in a sitting position, run feet along the ground before stopping]Stretch! [With legs extended straight out in front of you, bend at the hips and stretch forward with both arms]Run, Run, Run, Run, Run, Run, STOP! [With knees bent in front of you in a sitting position, run feet along the ground before stopping]Stretch! [With legs extended straight out in front of you, alternate arms and stretch over to both sides of your body with arms extended above your head]

When they got to the shops they asked the shopkeeper, “Excuse me, have you seen a little round house, without any windows or doors, a chimney on top and a star in the middle?”

The shopkeeper thought hard. She scratched her head. [Scratch the top of your head with one hand]She scratched her tummy [Scratch your stomach with both hands]She scratched under her arms. [Alternate hands and scratch under both of your arms]And said… “No.”

Maybe we could ask our friends and family suggested the boy. So they went…Run, Run, Run, Run, Run, Run, STOP! [With knees bent in front of you in a sitting position, run feet along the ground before stopping]Breathe [Raise arms above the head on the inhale and down again on the exhale]Run, Run, Run, Run, Run, Run, STOP! [With knees bent in front of you in a sitting position, run feet along the ground before stopping]Breathe [Raise arms above the head on the inhale and down again on the exhale]Run, Run, Run, Run, Run, Run, STOP! [With knees bent in front of you in a sitting position, run feet along the ground before stopping]Breathe [Raise arms above the head on the inhale and down again on the exhale]

When they got to their friends and family they asked “Excuse me, have you seen a little round house, without any windows or doors, a chimney and a star in the middle?”

Their friends and family thought hard. They scratched their heads. [Scratch the top of your head with one hand]They scratched their tummies. [Scratch your stomach with both hands]They scratched under their arms. [Alternate hands and scratch under both of your arms]

Page 10: Fiction …  · Web viewWeek 7 Far Far Away. Week 8 Environmental Sustainability. Week 9 The Magic Hoop. Week 10 Growing Up. Week 11 The Emperors New Clothes Introduction- Presenting

And said… “No.”

They would have to keep looking. They went…Run, Run, Run, Run, Run, Run, STOP! [With knees bent in front of you in a sitting position, run feet along the ground before stopping]Yawn! [Give a big yawn and stretch your arms out]Run, Run, Run, Run, Run, Run, STOP! [With knees bent in front of you in a sitting position, run feet along the ground before stopping]Yawn! [Give a big yawn and stretch your arms out]Run, Run, Run, Run, Run, Run, STOP! [With knees bent in front of you in a sitting position, run feet along the ground before stopping]Yawn! [Give a big yawn and stretch your arms out]

The children were starting to feel tired when they saw Bob the Builder standing under a tree. They asked, “Excuse me, have you seen a little round house, without any windows or doors, a chimney on top and a star in the middle?”

Bob the Builder thought hard.He scratched his head. [Scratch the top of your head with one hand]He scratched his tummy. [Scratch your stomach with both hands]He scratched under his arms. [Alternate hands and scratch under both of your arms]And said “Have you looked everywhere?”The children said “Everywhere!”“Have you looked up?” asked Bob the Builder.

The children slowly lifted their heads up, up, up. [Raise your eyes slowly upwards]On the branches of the tree were many, many apples! [Pull out the apple]The children looked at the apple. A real CLOSE look. [Separate the apples pieces and show the children the inner part of one side]The children realised that they were looking at a little round house, with no windows or doors, a chimney on the top and a star in the middle!

Week Two – Kooky Animals

Welcome SongSit down and take a look, we’re going to read a book.

Sit down and take a look, with stories from ‘The Fiction Factory’

Book: The Wonky Donkey by Craig Smith (illustrated by Katz Cowley)

Foot Story: Two Mice Go To The Farm

Once upon a time there were two mice, and when this story started they were fast asleep, snoring.(Legs stretched out straight in front on the body, toes pointing down to the floor and flexing back towards the chest to the rhythm of the snores)

When one little mouse woke up and said, “Hooray!”(Lift right leg and shake)

She tried to wake up her friend, “Wake up! Wake up!”(Tap left leg and shake)

But her friend was fast asleep, so the little mouse went and fetched her trumpet.(Left leg continues to point and flex. Right leg bends and tiptoes out to the side, level with hip and returns to front centre. Both legs stretched straight in front of the body)

The trumpet went, “Brrrrhhhhh.” (Shake whole body gently)

But still the mouse slept. (Left leg continues to point and flex. Right leg bends and tiptoes out to the side, level with hip and returns to front centre. Both legs stretched straight in front of the body)

So off she went to fetch her pet lion. “Rrraggghhhh.” (Shake the whole body a little more vigorously)

But still the mouse slept.(Left leg continues to point and flex. Right leg bends and tiptoes out to the side, level with hip and returns to front centre. Both legs stretched straight in front of the body)

So this time she went and grabbed some cymbals, “Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang!”(Clap hands with force)

And the little mouse jumped up, “Hooray!”(Lift left foot into the air and return to the floor)

“Hooray!” said his friend. “What shall we do today?”(Turn feet towards each other, and wriggle each foot in turn as it speaks)

Page 12: Fiction …  · Web viewWeek 7 Far Far Away. Week 8 Environmental Sustainability. Week 9 The Magic Hoop. Week 10 Growing Up. Week 11 The Emperors New Clothes Introduction- Presenting

“Lets go visit a farm!”“Good idea! But first, lets do out exercises.”The two little mice went Point and Flex Point and Flex.(Pont and flex feet)

They did their push ups. Up, down. Up, down. Up, down.(Keep balls of the feet on the ground, lifting heals up and down)

They did some star jumps! Star jump! Star jump! Star jump!(In a sitting position jump feet apart high in the air, and then back together again)

They ran on the spot as fast as they could.(Run with feet on the spot in a sitting position)

They even went on their exercise bikes.(Pedal legs in the air with bent knees at different speeds. Repeat 3 times)

And after all their exercises, it was time for them to go to the farm. Off they went. Walk, walk, walk, walk, hop, hop, skippety-hop, hop, hop, skippety-hop, jump, jump, jump, jump, STOP!(Rhythm of different steps performed using the feet in a sitting position, with bent knees)

Once they got to the farm, they were very, very excited. They were going to see lots of animals. What kinds of animals live on a farm?First they saw a barn. Inside the barn were many horses! The horses were shaking their manes “Neigh!” and their tails “Neigh!”(Whilst kneeling on all fours shake your head from side to side on the first ‘Neigh’, before shaking your bottom from side to side on the second ‘Neigh’. Repeat 3 times)

There were also some chickens flapping their wings and making a lot of noise. What kind of sound do chickens make? “Cluck! Cluck! Cluck!”(Sit with legs extended straight in front of you. Inhale bringing your arms out to the side and above your head. As your arms come down exhale and ‘Cluck’ like a chicken. Repeat 3 times)

Inside the barn the mice also noticed two bicycles. The put on a helmet and began to ride out and over the meadow. They cycled slowly up the hills and quickly down the other side.(Mime action of securing a helmet on your head. Pedal legs in the air with bent knees at different speeds. Repeat 3 times)

Skipping and jumping through the meadow were some woolly sheep. Skippety, skippety, skippety jump! Skippety, skippety, skippety, jump!(Sitting with knees bent, skip feet then jump both feet high into the air. Repeat 3 times)

Under a shady tree the farm yard dog was having a rest. He was curled up in a ball snoring. Then he had a nice big stretch!(Curl your body into a child’s pose towards the floor, then extend out into downward dog. Hold the position for a few moments)

Page 13: Fiction …  · Web viewWeek 7 Far Far Away. Week 8 Environmental Sustainability. Week 9 The Magic Hoop. Week 10 Growing Up. Week 11 The Emperors New Clothes Introduction- Presenting

The mice had such a lovely day at the farm but now they were feeling tired so it was time to go home. They waved goodbye to the animals and off they went. Walk, walk, walk, walk, hop, hop, skippety-hop, hop, hop, skippety-hop, jump, jump, jump, jump, STOP!(Rhythm of different steps performed using the feet in a seated position with legs bent)

And when they reached home, they jumped into bed and it wasn’t long before they were safe and sound, under the covers, fast asleep, snoring.(Lower legs to the ground as upper body lifts from the floor into an upright position. Legs resting straight on the floor in front of the body as toes point and flex to the rhythm of snoring)

Activity: Fairy Tale Lucky Dip

Use the Fiction Factory storybook and the lucky dip bags. Each bag has a set of pictures inside. Bag 1 has a character, Bag 2 has a location, Bag 3 an emotion, Bag 4 a reason for the

emotion, and Bag 5 an action. Your job is to make it work as a story. An example is; Once upon a time there was a dog. Who lived at the beach. He was feeling sad. Because it was raining outside. So he stayed inside and read a book.

It doesn’t matter if they don’t make a whole lot of sense, the kids find it really funny when there are elephants living in igloos and monkeys having birthday parties. Just be sure the pictures go back into their corresponding bags.

The activity takes a total of about 10 minutes depending on how many times it is repeated. Try for at least two.

Book: Little Red Riding Hood by Jess Stockham

Movement Story: The Princess and the Frog by Nicole O’Meara (edited by Aljin Abella)

*Music Tracks Required: Mozart’s ‘Eine Kleine Nachtmusik (2nd Movement)’ / Mozart’s ‘Symphony No. 40 in G Minor’ / Jules Massenet’s ‘Thais’ *Props Required: Socks

(Be sure to hand out the socks folded up into their ‘ball’ position before starting the story. It might also be good idea to have a little physical warm up beforehand and using it as an opportunity to explain that when they hear you use a word like ‘FREEZE’, they are to stop and listen. A good track to accompany this movement story is ‘Eine Kleine Nachtmusik (2nd Movement)’ by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, though do not let the music overpower your own voice)

[Play Mozart’s Eine Kleine Nachtmusik (2nd Movement)]

Once upon a time, a long time ago, there lived a young princess. More than anything else in the whole wide world, the princess loved playing with her beautiful coloured ball. [Reveal the sock folded up in its ‘ball’ configuration]

She would pass it around her legs - around and around and around [Whilst standing, pass the sock ball around your knees]She would pass it around her middle - around and around and around [Whilst standing, pass the sock ball around your stomach]And she would toss it high into the air and catch it - up and catch, up and catch, up and catch [Whilst standing, toss the sock ball into the air and catch it]

One day the princess was playing in the garden with her ball. She passed it around her legs - around and around and around [Whilst standing, pass the sock ball around your knees]She passed it around her middle - around and around and around [Whilst standing, pass the sock ball around your stomach]And she tossed it high into the air and caught it - up and catch, up and catch, up and catch [Whilst standing, toss the sock ball into the air and catch it]

The princes was having so much fun, she kept throwing the ball high into the air over and over until suddenly…SPLASH! Her beautiful red ball fell into the well at the bottom of the garden.

Page 15: Fiction …  · Web viewWeek 7 Far Far Away. Week 8 Environmental Sustainability. Week 9 The Magic Hoop. Week 10 Growing Up. Week 11 The Emperors New Clothes Introduction- Presenting

The princess was very, very sad, and started to cry [Toss the sock ball into the air and catch it again a few times. Catch it one last time on ‘Splash’ and pretend to once the ball has fallen into the well]“My ball has fallen into the well, and I’ll never be able to get it out,” cried the princess.

Just then, a frog hopped along [Insert your arms into the socks to transform the sock balls into sock frogs] – boing, boing, boing! Ribbit! Ribbit! [Bend your knees only slightly and jump into the air with each ‘Boing’]

“Oh, please don’t cry princess,” croaked the frog. “I can get your ball back for you.”

“Oh could you?” replied the princess. “I’ll be your best friend forever if you do!”

“Ok!” said the frog. “And since we’ll be best friends, do you think I can come over for dinner?”

The princess had a think [Scratch your head with one hand] and said, “Ok!”

The frog said, “And since we’ll be best friends, do you think I can come over for a sleepover?”

Now the princess wasn’t sure about having a frog over for a sleepover, but she really wanted her ball back, so she had a think [Scratch your head with one hand] and finally, said “Ok!”

The frog was so excited about having a new best friend, that he jumped, and jumped, and jumped, right into the well [Bend your knees only slightly and jump into the air with each ‘Boing’. Bend down completely on ‘Splash’]SPLASH!

When the frog returned, he had the princess’ red ball in his mouth [Remove your arm from the sock, transforming the sock frogs into sock balls as you do. Note that some of the children may need assistance doing this also]. Now without even saying thank-you, the princess snatched the ball back from the frog, and started to play with it.

[Play Mozart’s Symphony No. 40 in G Minor]

Then she ran away as fast as she could, waving the ball in the air, laughing [Depending on available space, run either on the spot waving your arms extended above your head from side to side, or run around the room with your arms extended above your head from side to side]

The little frog gave chase - boing, boing, boing! Ribbit! Ribbit! [Bend your knees only slightly and jump into the air with each ‘Boing’]“Princess, wait!”Boing, boing, boing! Ribbit! Ribbit! [Bend your knees only slightly and jump into the air with each ‘Boing’]

“What about your promise?”

But the princess did not stop. She ran and she ran and she ran [Depending on available space, run either on the spot waving your arms extended above your head from side to side, or run around the room with your arms extended above your head from side to side] laughing all the way back home.

[Insert your arms into the socks to transform the sock balls into sock frogs] When the little frog reached the castle that the princess lived in, he knocked on the door – Knock! Knock! knock! [With one hand, knock on an imaginary door in front of you]

Who should answer the door but the king! The frog told the king all about the promises the princess had made.

The king stroked his beard – "hmmm…" [With one hand, stroke an imaginary beard from your chin downwards to your stomach]The king straightened his crown [Straighten an imaginary crown on your head with both hands]The king cleared his throat, and said “Come on in!”

In the frog went – boing, boing, boing! [Bend your knees only slightly and jump into the air with each ‘Boing’]

When the princess saw the frog she said “Eewwww! Why did you let that slimy frog into the castle?”

The king stroked his beard – "hmmm…" [With one hand, stroke an imaginary beard from your chin downwards to your stomach]The king straightened his crown [Straighten an imaginary crown on your head with both hands]The king cleared his throat, and said “Did you promise to be this frog’s best friend?”

The princess had a think [Scratch your head with one hand] and said “Yes”.

The king asked “Did you promise the frog could come over for dinner?”

Again, the princess had a think [Scratch your head with one hand] and said “Yes”.

The king asked “Did you promise the frog could come and have a sleepover?”

The princess had a think [Scratch your head with one hand] and said “Yes”.

The king said “Well, you must keep your promises.” and with that the frog jump and jumped and jumped [Bend your knees only slightly and jump into the air with each ‘Jump’] next to the princess at the dinner table to share some soup.

The princess sipped her soup [With one hand, sip on an imaginary spoon quietly]The frog SLURPED his soup [Bend your head slightly before sticking your tongue out and bringing your head upwards, slurping loudly]The princess sipped her soup [With one hand, sip on an imaginary spoon quietly]The frog SLURPED his soup [Bend your head slightly before sticking your tongue out and bringing your head upwards, slurping loudly]

Suddenly the princess wasn’t feeling very hungry anymore, so she started heading upstairs for bed.

The king stroked his beard – "hmmm…" [With one hand, stroke an imaginary beard from your chin downwards to your stomach]The king straightened his crown [Straighten an imaginary crown on your head with both hands]The king cleared his throat, and said “Aren’t you forgetting someone?”

And with that, the frog jumped from the dinner table [Bend your knees only slightly and jump into the air], and joined the princess upstairs, in her bed, to sleep [Lay down with your whole body on the ground in child’s pose]

[Play ‘Thaïs’ by Jules Massenet]

The next morning, when the princess woke up, she realised that she hadn’t been a very good friend to the frog. She turned to the frog and said, “I’m sorry little frog, I know I haven’t been a very good friend. I promise that from now on I will be a better friend to you”. And with that she bent down and gave the frog a tiny little kiss [Kiss the tip of the sock on your hand – don’t worry, they’re clean!]

Now we all know what happens when you kiss a frog in a fairy tale…he turned into a handsome prince!

The prince said, “Oh, thank you princess! By seeing me as friend instead of just a frog, you have broken the spell that was cast on me!”And from that day forward, the princess and the frog prince were best friends for the rest of their lives

Book: Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus by Mo Willems

(This book gives the children an opportunity to participate in the story. Take the time to let them decide if the Pigeon should drive the bus based on its and their own reasoning.)

Foot Story: Two Mice Go To The Carnival

Page 19: Fiction …  · Web viewWeek 7 Far Far Away. Week 8 Environmental Sustainability. Week 9 The Magic Hoop. Week 10 Growing Up. Week 11 The Emperors New Clothes Introduction- Presenting

“Hooray!” said his friend. “What shall we do today?”(Turn feet towards each other, and wriggle each foot in turn as it speaks)

“Lets go to a carnival!”“Good idea!

And after all their exercises, it was time for them to go to the carnival. Off they went. Walk, walk, walk, walk, hop, hop, skippety-hop, hop, hop, skippety-hop, jump, jump, jump, jump, STOP!(Rhythm of different steps performed using the feet in a sitting position, with bent knees)

When they got to the carnival they were very excited – there were so many rides! First they went on the roller coaster. The roller coaster slowly went up, up, up, before coming down. (From standing swing arms up high over your head before swinging them back down between your legs)

That was a lot of fun, but now it was time to try the dodgem cars. They two little mice put on their seat belts. Taking the wheel, they were careful not to bump into anyone else. (From a seated position, scoot along on your bottom around the floor, avoiding any obstacles)

Now the two little mice decided to test their strength. They flexed their muscles.(Muscle poses)

They picked up the hammer; bringing it up, up, up over their heads, before bringing it crashing to the ground. (Step feet up one at a time higher into the air, before bringing them down to the floor)

The two mice were hungry after all these rides. They walked along until they found a popcorn stand. They watched the popcorn maker making the popcorn going wriggle, wriggle, pop! Wriggle, wriggle, pop! Wriggle, wriggle, pop!(Lying on your back, shake out arms and legs, fully extending out on ‘Pop!’)

The popcorn was delicious and for dessert the two mice had some fairy floss. The fairy floss was made in a big machine.(Seated with legs in a diamond formation)

Page 20: Fiction …  · Web viewWeek 7 Far Far Away. Week 8 Environmental Sustainability. Week 9 The Magic Hoop. Week 10 Growing Up. Week 11 The Emperors New Clothes Introduction- Presenting

The fairy floss machine churned the fairy floss candy around and around until it was light and fluffy.(Using arms, stir around along the shape of the diamond, gradually getting faster)

The two mice ate fairy floss candy until they were full. The mice had a lovely time at the carnival but now it was time to go home. So off they went. Walk, walk, walk, walk, hop, hop, skippety-hop, hop, hop, skippety-hop, jump, jump, jump, jump, STOP!(Rhythm of different steps performed using the feet in a seated position with legs bent)

When they reached home they jumped into bed and it wasn’t long before they were safe and sound, under the covers, fast asleep, snoring.(Lower legs to the ground as upper body lifts from the floor into an upright position. Legs resting straight on the floor in front of the body as toes point and flex to the rhythm of snoring)

Movement Story: The Lion & The Mouse by Aljin Abella (after Aesop)

*Music Track Required: The Lion Sleeps Tonight by The Tokens

(Be sure to hand out the lion masks before starting the story. It might also be good idea to have a little physical warm-up beforehand and using it as an opportunity to explain that when they hear you use a word like ‘FREEZE’, they are to stop and listen. A good track to accompany this movement story is ‘The Lion Sleeps Tonight’ by The Tokens, though do not let the music overpower your own voice)

This is the story of a mighty lion, who was brave, strong, and never needed help from anyone.

Once upon a time all the jungle animals decided to have a big competition to see who would become the king of the jungle. The first part of their competition was a race. Lots of animals entered, including Tortoise, who was very slow [Crawl along the floor very slowly]. Rabbit was a lot faster [Jump around the room at a quicker pace] but none of them could compare to the mighty Lion, who ran faster than lighting! [Depending on the space available to you, you can either run quickly and the room, or run quickly on the spot]

Now the animals wanted to find out who could make the loudest sound. Kookaburra went first. She flew high up into a tree, laughing as loudly as she could [Laugh loudly like a kookaburra]. Elephant knew that he could make a sound much louder than that, so he marched around, lifting his trunk, saying [Swing one arm out from side to side in front of your face before extending it out and upwards making an elephant sound]. Lion just laughed. He didn’t think the other animals were very loud at all. He climbed all the way up, up, up, a rocky mountain, and when he got to the top, made a roar that could be heard all across the land. [Place your hands around your mouth before roaring loudly like a lion]

Only the biggest and strongest animals entered the next part of the competition, which was to see who could push the biggest boulder off jungle peak. Giraffe went first and using her long, strong legs, tried to kick the boulder off the peak [Sitting on your bottom, extend your legs out slowly, pushing an imaginary boulder] but it was no good. Next came Gorilla. Beating his chest and showing off his muscly arms, he tried to lift the boulder off the peak [Beat your chest with your arms, bend down and attempt, without success, to lift an imaginary boulder]. But even he wasn’t strong enough. “Stand aside” said Lion, “and watch me do it”. Rubbing his mighty paws together, Lion slowly but surely

Page 21: Fiction …  · Web viewWeek 7 Far Far Away. Week 8 Environmental Sustainability. Week 9 The Magic Hoop. Week 10 Growing Up. Week 11 The Emperors New Clothes Introduction- Presenting

pushed the huge rock right over the edge of the cliff. [Rub your hands together, before extending your arms out in front of you to push an imaginary boulder]

By now all the other animals knew that no one could match Lion’s strength and cunning, and crowned him the king of the jungle.

Very pleased with himself and after such a long day, Lion decided to take a nap [Lay down on the floor to rest in child’s pose]

[Reveal the Mouse plush]

Now one animal that was never at the competition was Mouse – he was too busy looking for cheese. He searched high and low all across the jungle. And because he was so hungry following his nose, he wasn’t looking where he was going. [Holding the tip of the string, dangle the mouse plush quickly over the body and faces of the children resting on the floor. The may be tempted to stand or grab the mouse plush at this point, so be sure to remind them to continue napping as the lion]

As you can imagine, Lion was very grumpy when Mouse woke him. He let out a very loud roar. [Roar loudly] Lion quickly snatched Mouse up in his paw [Hold the mouse plush between your hands and bring it up in front of your face, ensuring the children can also see it] and said “Don’t you know who I am? How dare you disturb the king of the jungle!” Little Mouse was terrified. “Oh please don’t eat me, mighty Lion. I’m so very sorry. I promise if you let me go, I’ll be your friend forever and come and help you if you’re ever in trouble. The lion just laughed. [Laugh loudly] “How can a tiny little creature like you help me? I’m the bravest, strongest, and smartest of all the animals.

(NB: Should you still have time, an interesting social experiment is to throw the direction of the story in the hands of the children to decide mouse’s fate. They can choose to let the mouse go free, leaving you to continue the story as written. Should they decide to eat the mouse, forgo the next highlighted line, and continue until the lion gets caught in the trap with no one to help him. You’ll return to this section of the story afterwards to expand on the moral of the story)

But you have made me laugh, so I’ll let you go.” Quickly Mouse hurried away. [Tuck the mouse plush away]

A few days later, Lion was walking along through the jungle, very proud of himself, when suddenly he walked right into a hunter’s net. [Crawl along the floor on your hands and knees before lying on your back with arms and legs in the air once caught in the net] Panicked, he used his speed to try to run out of the net [Run with your arms and legs extended in mid-air] but it didn’t work. Next he used his strength to try and push through the net [Slowly extend your arms and legs outwards] but still it didn’t work. Lion was very sad, there was nothing he could do but roar [Roar loudly]. The sound reached all across the jungle and though all the animals heard Lion’s call for help only mouse came to look for him. [Reveal the mouse plush again]

(NB: Obviously if the children chose to eat the mouse earlier, no animal is to come and help Lion as he doesn’t have any friends. Make the point of how they as the Lion chose to eat their only friend and are now trapped in the net forever. Then offer to show them what would have happened should they chosen to save Mouse. Then go back to earlier in the story before the highlighted line and continue as it was originally intended)

Page 22: Fiction …  · Web viewWeek 7 Far Far Away. Week 8 Environmental Sustainability. Week 9 The Magic Hoop. Week 10 Growing Up. Week 11 The Emperors New Clothes Introduction- Presenting

When he found him, Mouse said “Lion! You’re trapped! Stay still, now I can keep my promise and help you.” Climbing all up and down the net and using his sharp teeth, Mouse ate through all the ropes until Lion was free. [Holding the tip of the string, dangle the mouse plush quickly over the body and faces of the children resting on the floor]“Oh, thank you!" said Lion. I thought I’d be trapped in there forever. I’m sorry for thinking you’d be too small to help”. “Don’t worry about it – a promise is a promise” said Mouse.

The mighty Lion learned that even the smallest creatures can have the biggest hearts and the tiny mouse had made a friend for life.

The End.

Draw and Tell Story: One Man’s Treasure by Richard Thompson

There are two pirates in this story. One was named Black Bert and one was named Blue Beard. There were walking through the forest near here one day, when Black Bert stopped suddenly.

Page 24: Fiction …  · Web viewWeek 7 Far Far Away. Week 8 Environmental Sustainability. Week 9 The Magic Hoop. Week 10 Growing Up. Week 11 The Emperors New Clothes Introduction- Presenting

“Hang on a minute there, Blue!” he said. “Look over there. There on the lower branch of that tree… is that a piece of paper stuck up there? Stay here. I’m going to go investigate."

He went to the tree, and sure enough, there WAS a piece of paper stuck up there.

“Come over here, Blue!” he shouted. “I think we’ve found ourselves a treasure map! Look at all the lines and squiggles on this here piece of paper… this has to be the map that Old Jack Dunnagan made to show where he buried all those diamonds that nobody ever found!”

“I just had me a great pirate idea!” declared Blue. “Why don’t we follow along on that map? We can dig up those diamonds. I’ll give you half, you give me half, and we’ll both be rich! What do you say?”

Well, his friend thought that was a fine idea, so off the two pirates went.

They followed a long curvy path [DRAW the path (1)] into the forest until they got to a large lake here [DRAW the lake (2)]

They had to get across to the other side of the lake and, being pirates, they did a very cheeky thing: they took two canoes. They paddled the canoes across the lake and left one on the beach… here [DRAW one canoe (3)] and one here. [DRAW the other canoe (3)]

They followed a path that ran along the lake and then took a path that led off into the forest in this direction. [DRAW the path of the lake and forest (4)]

Eventually the path took them past a large tree. [DRAW the tree (5)]

Now those two pirates were busy talking about what they were going to buy with their diamonds when they got them…

“Oh, I know what I’m going to buy, Blue. I’m going to buy myself a new car! It’s going to be shiny red and have automatic transmission, power steering, driver-side air bag, four wheel drive… No! I’m rich! I’m going to get six wheel drive!”

They were so busy talking that they didn’t notice that someone was watching them! Up in that tree two little black eyes were watching as they went by and when they had passed the tree, a little creature came out and started to follow them along the path.

The creature followed them along the path and when they turned and went this way [DRAW the path past the tree (6)] he was right behind them.

He was right behind them they got to a pond… here…[DRAW the pond (7)] and he heard Black Bert say to his friend, “Look Blue! This pond here, that’s the pond that’s on the map. Now we just have to go a little bit further and we’ll come to a rock, and then just past that, that’s where we’ll start digging our hole. Come on! Let’s go! I want to get rich quick!”

And it was just like the pirate said. They came to a rock… here… [DRAW the rock (8)] and a little past that they started digging their hole… here… [DRAW the hole (9)]

They were very excited about getting those diamonds so it didn’t take them long to dig quite a large hole in the bottom of which they found a box. [DRAW the two sides and top of the box (10] Blue Beard

Page 25: Fiction …  · Web viewWeek 7 Far Far Away. Week 8 Environmental Sustainability. Week 9 The Magic Hoop. Week 10 Growing Up. Week 11 The Emperors New Clothes Introduction- Presenting

threw the box onto a flat piece of ground [DRAW the horizontal line for the ground (10)], took out his sword and chopped it right down the middle. [DRAW the vertical line through the box (10)]

He looked into the box and he said, “Wait a minute, Black Bert! What’s going on here? There aren’t any diamonds in this box. There’s some almonds. And some pecans. I see some peanuts and cashews and walnuts… but not a single diamond! This was a cruel trick you played on me, making me come into the forest and dig this big hole, hoping for diamonds when all I got was a box of nuts! I’m pretty mad at you Bert!”

And with that, he stomped off [DRAW ‘stomped off (11)] back toward the lake.

His friend went running after him calling out: “Come back Blue! Come back! It wasn’t a trick! I really thought it was diamonds! Come back!”

Now both pirates were gone but the little creature was still there. He turned around [TURN the page upside down (12)] to make sure there were no other pirates around anywhere. Then he went and looked into the bow with his little black eyes [DRAW ‘eyes’ (13)] and he said, “I don’t know why those pirates were so upset. This looks like a very nice treasure to me…”

And of course to him it would, because he was a…SQUIRREL.

Welcome SongSit down and take a look, we’re going to read a book.

Sit down and take a look, with stories from ‘The Fiction Factory’

Today all of our stories are about some of the things that we can do really well. You may be good at doing lots of things but not so good at other things. Lots of us learn in different ways. Sometimes we think that we won’t be good at doing something, but if we close and eyes, and say ‘Yes, I can, can!’ and give it a try, we may do better than when we first thought

Draw and Tell Story: The Singing House by Richard Thompson

Page 27: Fiction …  · Web viewWeek 7 Far Far Away. Week 8 Environmental Sustainability. Week 9 The Magic Hoop. Week 10 Growing Up. Week 11 The Emperors New Clothes Introduction- Presenting

This is a story about three little mice. Those mice lived right here [DRAW pantry (1)] in the pantry of the McIntyre house.

They had three tidy little mouse holes all in a row. One here for Jesse. One here for Aleisha. One here for Jacqueline. [DRAW mouse holes (2)]

Those mice really liked their home in the McIntyre house. It was warm and dry. And every night just at bed time, Mr McIntyre came down to the pantry to get himself a bed time snack. And when he did, he always dropped a few crumbs on the floor. [DRAW crumbs (3)] And, as soon as Mr. McIntyre went to bed, those three mice came out to collect up the crumbs to eat for their bed time snacks.

The mice were very happy in their home in the pantry, until the McIntyre's got a kitten… Kittens grow up into cats and cats eat mice! The mice knew that and decided that they needed to find a new home before the kitten got much older. So one night, Jesse and Aleisha headed off to look for one.

They left the pantry. They went down the block. They went over once block to where the bus stopped, here… [DRAW to bus stop (4)]

They got on the bus and rode up one street and down another… up one street and down another… until they came to downtown where they got off the bus. As soon as their feet touched the pavement, though, a dog started to chase them! They ducked down an alley to get away from the dog and an alley cat attacked them! [DRAW dog / cat (5)]

They hid behind some garbage cans until the cat went away and then came out and up around the corner here… where they found themselves standing in front of a movie theatre. [DRAW around the corner (6)]

Just then the movie finished and a huge crowd of people came pouring out of the theatre and almost stomped on those poor mice!

"Jesse!" cried Aleisha. "We can't live here. This city is too dangerous for mice! We have to go back the pantry where we will be safe." And back to the pantry they went. [DRAW back to the pantry (7)]

But the pantry wasn’t safe wither. Jacqueline told them: "That kitten almost caught me today! We definitely need a new place to live. I will go out tomorrow night and see what I can find."

The following night Jacqueline went out to look for a new house. She went very quickly across the city, because she knew what a dangerous place that could be. [DRAW across the city (8)]

She went out into the country through the fields and forest. [DRAW through the country (9)]

…until she came to a large lake, right here… [DRAW lake (10)]

Standing on the edge of the lake she could see a long, low building on the far side. [DRAW building (11)] She said to herself: "If no one lives in that building, it could be a very nice place for some mice to live. I'm going to go and have a look."

So she dived into the lake and swam across. [DRAW swam across (12)]

Page 28: Fiction …  · Web viewWeek 7 Far Far Away. Week 8 Environmental Sustainability. Week 9 The Magic Hoop. Week 10 Growing Up. Week 11 The Emperors New Clothes Introduction- Presenting

She went into the building. It looked like it was abandoned. No one lived there. She checked the main floor. It looked warm and dry. She checked upstairs. And then she found some narrow steps going up into the attic. And up in the attic she found something very exciting! It was so exciting that she had to tell her friends about it right away! She didn’t want to stop, not even for a rest or a snack.

Out of the house she ran! Across the lake! Through the country! Back through the city! [DRAW back to the pantry (13)] and back to the pantry!

"Jesse! Aleisha!" she said. "I found the perfect house! It's wonderful! It's just the right size for three mice. It’s a beautiful golden colour. And this is the best part... THIS HOUSE SINGS TO YOU! I found us a singing house!"

The other two mice had no idea what she was talking about. They'd never heard of a singing house. But they did need a new place to live so the next night they each packed a bag… one for Jesse, one for Aleisha and one for Jacqueline [DRAW bags (14)] and off they went with Jesse and Aleisha following Jacqueline across the city.

They followed along and followed along [DRAW followed (15)] until they got to the corner. That’s where Jacqueline got mixed up. She should have gone this way, but she went this way instead.

And those three mice ended up wandering all night long down winding country roads. [DRAW down winding country roads (16)] but they did eventually get to the old building and up into the attic. And what do you think they found when they got there!

That’s right! There was a guitar up in the attic. It was a very old guitar. It only had three strings left on it [DRAW only there strings (17)] but there was a hole in it that the mice could crawl through to get inside and inside there was lots of room for three mice to curl up and be cosy. And it was a beautiful golden colour. And when the wind came blowing through the cracks in the attic it strummed the strings on that old guitar and it sang to them just like Jacqueline said it would do!

As far as I know, the mice are still living in their singing house to this very day. And they like it a lot!

Sit down and take a look, with stories from ‘The Fiction Factory’

“Today all of our stories happen in lands far, far away. Where are some far away places that you can think of?”

Book: Amy and Luis by Libby Gleeson (illustrated by Freya Blackwood)

Foot Story: Two Mice Go Far, Far AwayOnce upon a time there were two mice, and when this story started they were fast asleep, snoring.(Legs stretched out straight in front on the body, toes pointing down to the floor and flexing back towards the chest to the rhythm of the snores.)

When one little mouse woke up and said, “Hooray!”(Lift right leg and shake)

She tried to wake up her friend, “Wake up! Wake up!”(Tap left leg and shake)

But her friend was fast asleep, so the little mouse went and fetched her alarm clock.(Left leg continues to point and flex. Right leg bends and tiptoes out to the side, level with hip and returns to front centre. Both legs stretched straight in front of the body)

The alarm clock went, “Bbbrrrrrriiinnnngggg.” (Shake whole body gently)

But still the mouse slept. (Left leg continues to point and flex)

So this time the alarm clock rang louder. “Bbbrrrrrriiinnnngggg.” (Shake the whole body a little more vigorously)

But still the mouse slept. So this time alarm clock rang as loudly as it could, “Bbbrrrrrriiinnnngggg!”(Shake whole body with force)

I think that worked. The little mouse jumped up and said, “Hooray!”(Lift left foot into the air and return to the floor)“Hooray!” said his friend. “What shall we do today?”(Turn feet towards each other, and wriggle each foot in turn as it speaks)

“Lets read our big book of fairy tales!”“Good Idea! But first, lets do out exercises.”The two little mice went Point and Flex, Point and Flex.(Pont and flex feet)

Page 30: Fiction …  · Web viewWeek 7 Far Far Away. Week 8 Environmental Sustainability. Week 9 The Magic Hoop. Week 10 Growing Up. Week 11 The Emperors New Clothes Introduction- Presenting

They did their push ups. Up, down. Up, down. Up, down.(Keep balls of the feet on the ground, lifting heels up and down)

They did some star jumps! Star jump! Star jump! Star jump!(In a sitting position jump feet apart high in the air, then back together)

They ran on the spot as fast as they could.(Run with feet on the spot in a sitting position)

Finally they were ready to read their book, but first they would have to find it! They looked over this way…they looked over that way…they looked up on the book shelf and down under the bed. But they couldn’t find their book of fairy tales anywhere!(Run feet from left to right and back again. Lie on your back and run feet up into the air and down again)

They would have to go far, far away to the land of fairy tales to find it. So off they went. Walk, walk, walk, walk, hop, hop, skippety-hop, hop, hop, skippety-hop, jump, jump, jump, jump, STOP!(Rhythm of different steps performed using the feet in a sitting position, with bent knees)

When they got to a land far, far away they saw all of the characters from their stories. There was Little Red Riding Hood, the Three Little Pigs, and Thumbelina. Sleeping Beauty didn’t look busy so they asked her. “Excuse me, have you seen our big book of fairy tales?” (Move one foot as if it was talking)

But Sleeping Beauty was fast asleep snoring!(Lay down in child’s pose with your head resting on ground, making sleeping sounds)

Not wanting to wake her up the mice tip-toed away. Shhh! They quietly went walk, walk, walk, walk, hop, hop, skippety-hop, hop, hop, skippety-hop, jump, jump, jump, jump, STOP!(Rhythm of different steps performed using the feet in a sitting position, with bent knees)

The Mice continued looking. They made their way down to the river and started to cross a bridge. Walk, walk, walk, walk, hop, hop, skippety-hop, hop, hop skippety-hop, jump, jump, jump, jump STOP!(Rhythm of different steps performed using the feet in a sitting position, with bent knees)Suddenly a big hairy ogre jumped out and shouted “Who’s that crossing my bridge?!?”(Stamp both feet down to the ground in front of you with legs bent)

“It's us, the little mice. Have you seen our big book of fairy tales?” (Move one foot as if it was talking)

But the ogre simply shook his big hairy arms and legs and head.(Shake arms, legs and head)

I guess they would have to keep looking. The mice made their way through the forest. They went walk, walk, walk, walk, hop, hop, skippety-hop, hop, hop, skippety-hop, jump, jump, jump, jump, STOP!(Rhythm of different steps performed using the feet in a sitting position, with bent knees)

In the forest the mice saw Little Red Riding Hood. They asked her, “Have you seen our big book of fairy tales?” But just before Red could answer the Big Bad Wolf jumped out from behind the bushes!

Page 31: Fiction …  · Web viewWeek 7 Far Far Away. Week 8 Environmental Sustainability. Week 9 The Magic Hoop. Week 10 Growing Up. Week 11 The Emperors New Clothes Introduction- Presenting

The mice began to run!(With legs bent run both feet along the ground)

The Big Bad Wolf ran after them opening his jaws wide and then bringing them down with a SNAP!(With legs bent, run both feet along the ground before extending your arms and legs out wide; bringing them together on ‘Snap’. Repeat 3 times)

The mice ran all the way to a tall beanstalk.(Stretch both arms high above your head)

Up they went, all the way to the top. (Lie on your back and run both feet up in to air, extending both legs)

At the top of the beanstalk was a big giant; he had huge arms, huge legs, and an enormous head! They asked him “Have you seen our big book of fairy tales?”(Move one foot as if it was talking before standing up. Stretch your arms and legs, making yourself as big as possible)

The giant stamped his feet crying “Fi Fie Fo Fum! Fi Fie Fo Fum! Fi Fie Fo Fum!”(Stamp your feet on each syllable the giant makes. Repeat 3 times)

He nearly stood on the mice! They scurried down the beanstalk and into a house next door where Cinderella was busy doing house work. She swept the cobwebs off the ceiling. Swish, swish, swish.(Sit back down with your leg extended out in front of you before stretching your arms up high above your head, moving your hands from side to side on each ‘Swish’)

She swept the dust off the floor. Swish, swish, swish.(Stretch forward from your hips and sweep your hands across the floor with each ‘Swish’)

That was when the fairy godmother appeared. Ping! The mice asked her. “Please fairy godmother. Can you use your magic to send us to where our book is?”(Move one foot as if it was talking)

The fairy godmother twirled her wand three times first one way, and then the other way.(Mine the action of twirling the wand high above your head)

Ping! The mice were magically transported into their bedroom! Their book was sitting next to their bed; it had been there all along! They sat down and began to read but it wasn’t long until they were fast asleep…SNORING!(Legs resting straight on the floor in front of the body as toes point and flex to the rhythm of the snoring)

Week Eight – Environmental Sustainability

Welcome SongSit down and take a look, we’re going to read a book.

Sit down and take a look, with stories from ‘The Fiction Factory’

“Today some of our stories have the colour GREEN in them. What are some green things you can think of? How about foods we eat that are green?”

Book: Peas by Andrew Cullen (illustrated by Simon Rickerty)

Draw and Tell Story: Farmer John by Richard Thompson

Farmer John was a very good farmer. Every day, he walked about to make sure that everything was as it should be on his farm. One morning, he was walking along the very long field on his farm…here… [DRAW field (1)] and he made an exciting discovery!

Growing in the ground there at the end of the field was a huge turnip… [DRAW the turnip (2)]…the biggest turnip that farmer John had ever seen. The turnip was growing in the ground, but farmer John knew that it was a turnip because of its shape, colour, and because of the leaves growing out from the top of it… [DRAW leaves (3)].

Page 34: Fiction …  · Web viewWeek 7 Far Far Away. Week 8 Environmental Sustainability. Week 9 The Magic Hoop. Week 10 Growing Up. Week 11 The Emperors New Clothes Introduction- Presenting

Farmer John was very pleased. Turnips were his favourite food in the whole world. He loved boiled turnips, steamed turnips, fried turnips, roasted turnips, sautéed turnips, and turnips in soup. He loved turnip salad, turnip chips, turnip lollipops and pancakes, turnip cookies and turnip ice-cream.

So, naturally, he grabbed onto the leaves and started to pull to get the turnip out of the ground. He pulled. And pulled. And pulled. But the turnip didn’t budge.

“I’m going to need some help.” Thought Farmer John, and he ran back to the farm house here [DRAW farm house (4)] to get his wife.

Farmer John and his wife grabbed hold of the leaves and started to pull. They pulled. And they pulled. And they pulled. But the turnip didn’t budge – not one centimetre.

“We need more help” said the farmer’s wife. “I’ll go and get our daughter Rosie.” She walked all the way to the other side of the farm where their daughter Rosie was feeding the ducks by the pond. [DRAW the path to the pond / DRAW the pond (5)]

She was more than happy to help. Together they all grabbed onto the leaves of the turnip, and pulled. And pulled. And pulled. Do you think it worked? No, it was no good. The turnip didn’t move – not an inch, not a tiny little hair.

“We need more help,” declared Rosie. “I’ll go and get the horse.”

The horse was eating grass with the cow in the meadow over here… [DRAW the path to the meadow / DRAW the meadow (6)] but he was happy to come and help.

They tied one end of rope around the horse and the other end around the leaves of that gigantic turnip. Farmer John, his wife, and their daughter grabbed onto the rope as well. Together they pulled. And they pulled. And they pulled. But still, no luck. The turnip was well and truly stuck in the ground.

“We need more help” thought the horse. So off he went to fetch the cow. Clippety-clop, clippety-clop, back to the meadow.

But when he got there, the cow was gone.

“Maybe she went to the barn” thought the horse, and he went to check. Around the bend, around the corner… [DRAW the path to the barn (7)] until finally he found her [DRAW the barn (8)] fixing up her stall, sweeping out the mess, and putting down some new hay. [DRAW the hay (9)]The cow was also happy to help, so together they took the shortcut back to the field. [DRAW the path back to the field (10)] But even with the cow helping, they couldn’t begin to move that turnip.

Realising they needed more help, off the cow went to fetch the chickens.

Now Farmer John had about 40 chickens living inside the chicken coop next to the farm house, here [DRAW chicken coop (11)] but even with 40 chickens, the cow, the horse, his wife and their daughter, Farmer John still couldn’t pull that turnip out from the ground. It was looking pretty hopeless.

Page 35: Fiction …  · Web viewWeek 7 Far Far Away. Week 8 Environmental Sustainability. Week 9 The Magic Hoop. Week 10 Growing Up. Week 11 The Emperors New Clothes Introduction- Presenting

“We need more help,” said Farmer John, “professional help.” I’m going to see my friend Old Macdonald. Now Old Macdonald had a… that’s right, a farm, and Old Macdonald knew about everything agricultural.

So Farmer John headed down the road to Old Macdonald’s house. [DRAW the road to Old Macdonald’s (12)]

He told Old Macdonald the story of the turnip, and at the end said, “Now Old Macdonald, I’ve got a question for you. [DRAW the question (13)] How am I going to get that turnip out of the ground?”

Old Macdonald scratched his head and said, “It sounds like you need some help”.

“No, I don’t think that’s the answer,” said Farmer John, “I’ve got lots of help. I’ve got my wife and daughter, the horse, the cow, and the whole flock of chickens”.

“I can help!” came a tiny little voice from the corner of the room.

Farmer John looked over and saw a tiny, little mouse there.

“That’s a kind offer, Mouse,” he said, “but I don’t think someone as small as you would be of much help”.

‘Now don’t be too hasty,” said Old Macdonald. “You never know when you might find good help in unexpected places. Farmer John, you go back home. You and your family and all your animals wait out in that field tomorrow morning. You might get a surprise”.

Farmer John headed home. [DRAW path back home (14)]

Early next morning, they were all standing by the turnip, waiting. Suddenly they heard a loud sound behind them…Vrrmmm, Vrrmmm, VRRMMM!!! They turned around…[TURN the page upside down (15)]…and what did they see coming across the field?

A tow truck! And who do you think was driving that tow truck? You’re right! The little mouse was driving the tow truck! [DRAW the mouse (16)] He backed it up to the turnip, let down the hook and hooked it onto the leaves that were growing out the top. He pressed a lever and…rrr…POP!...out came the turnip.

They took the turnip back to the house, washed it off, chopped it up, and had themselves a turnip feast.

And the guest of honour was…THE LITTLE MOUSE!

The End.

Week Nine – The Magic Hoop

Welcome SongSit down and take a look, we’re going to read a book.

Sit down and take a look, with stories from ‘The Fiction Factory’

“We’ve seen all sorts of magic in our fairy tales: frogs turning into princes, magic carpets, magic wands and beanstalks in the clouds. But have you ever seen a magic hoop before?”

Book: Zoe & Beans: The Magic Hoop by Chloe and Mick Inkpen

Activity: The Magic Hoop

*Music Track Required: Circus Theme*Prop Required: Hula-Hoop (2 if you’re feeling adventurous)

“Today, I have a very special surprise for everyone. I’ve brought along a very special hula-hoop. But this isn’t an ordinary old hoop. This is the same hula-hoop from our story with Zoe and Beans. Meaning that anyone that goes through this hoop will turn into his or her favourite animal. Who has a favourite animal? Don’t tell me just yet, because right now we’re going to play a little game – who likes playing games?”

(Start everyone in a circle. Explain that we’re all going to take turns going through the hoop and coming out the other side as our favourite animal. You can take some suggestions from the children at this point. This activity can be done with either 1 or 2 hula-hoops depending if you have enough adult help and supervision to hold the second hoop. Sometimes you may even employ the help of one of the children to hold the hoop. One way to attempt this activity is to ask each child to enter the circle and go through the hoop and having the rest of the children guess or imitate the animal they have turned into. You’ll need to keep an eye on children as they enter and re-join the circle to ensure everyone is allowed an opportunity to participate.Another way is to follow you though 1 or 2 hoops – a la a conga line – and change animals each time you pass through a hoop. You’ll have a variety of animals this way.)

Activity: Fairy Tale Lucky Dip

Use the Fiction Factory storybook and the lucky dip bags. Each bag has a set of pictures inside.

Page 38: Fiction …  · Web viewWeek 7 Far Far Away. Week 8 Environmental Sustainability. Week 9 The Magic Hoop. Week 10 Growing Up. Week 11 The Emperors New Clothes Introduction- Presenting

Activity: Who’s House?

There’s a house with a wall,With a wall, with a wall.

There’s a house with a floor,With a floor, with a floor.

There’s a house with a roof,With a roof, with a roof…

Week Ten – Growing Up

Welcome SongSit down and take a look, we’re going to read a book.

Sit down and take a look, with stories from ‘The Fiction Factory’

(If everything has gone according to plan, many of your children would have come dressed up as what they would like to be when they grow up. Spend a little time having a look and asking questions e.g. Why have they decided to be a fireman? Do they know what an astronaut does?)

Book/Discussion: Jobs – All Change! by Angela Lambert

(This is essentially a very short book and is included just to accentuate some of the things the children can be or what they’ve already come dressed as. It might also overcome perceptions that only boys or girls can do certain jobs. All this can be done as you’re going around observing costumes)

Book: I’m Big Enough Now by Pamela Duncan Edwards (illustrated by Rebecca Harry)

Movement Story: Superheros – Evil’s Spawn by Aljin Abella

(It might be good idea to have a little physical warm-up beforehand and using it as an opportunity to explain that when the group hears you use a word like ‘FREEZE’ they are to stop and listen. There are three tracks that accompany this movement story, so read below to find out where to make the changes in your midi player. Obviously be wary of the volume of the music so it doesn’t overpower your own voice)

Do you remember our superhero friends Freddy Fast and Suzie Stretch?

Freddy Fast could run faster than the speed of light simply by yelling “Freddy Fast, GO!” [Whilst standing, run on the spot quickly] and Suzie Stretch could stretch her arms and legs as far and as wide as you can imagine by simply shouting “Suzie Stretch!” [Whilst standing, extend and stretch outwards your arms and legs]

One person that could never forget about the superheros was their arch-villain, Mr Evil [Whilst standing, place your hands on your stomach and laugh an evil laugh]. He had been very grumpy ever since Freddy and Suzie caught him and threw him in jail all those months ago. But Mr Evil had a secret. A secret that no one else knew. Mr Evil had two children: Scream McQueen and Tough Buff. They had always wanted to be like their father when they grew up, and they weren’t happy that the superheros had put him in jail. Scream McQueen had her dad’s evil laugh [Whilst standing, place your hands around your mouth and laugh an evil laugh] and could turn invisible by waving her hands [Weave both your hands from side to side across your face]. Tough Buff was a hulking figure, who would beat his chest [Whilst standing, beat both hands on your chest and let out a masculine sound] and was as tough as nails. Together they hatched a plan to get back at all the superheros that caught their dad.

One night after a long day saving the world, Freddy and Suzie were at getting ready for bed. Their bedtime routine was a little different from other people. They liked to exercise before bed to make sure that stayed nice and strong. They did 10 star jumps [Standing star jumps]. They did 5 push-ups [Lie on the ground for these]. They kept their balance by standing one leg [Whilst standing, bend one knee back and hold onto your ankle with one hand. Hold this position for a few moments] and then the other

Page 40: Fiction …  · Web viewWeek 7 Far Far Away. Week 8 Environmental Sustainability. Week 9 The Magic Hoop. Week 10 Growing Up. Week 11 The Emperors New Clothes Introduction- Presenting

leg. [Whilst standing, bend your other knee back and hold onto your ankle with one hand. Hold this position for a few moments] And after all their exercises they said goodnight and started to go off to bed. But before they could get there, an alarm went off [play ‘Alarm’ track]. Someone had broken into their hideout – Scream McQueen and Tough Buff. Before the superheros could do anything, Tough Buff beat his chest, stamped his feet and began punching the roof! [Whilst standing, beat both hands on your chest and let out a masculine sound, then begin punching high above your head into the air, and stamp your feet on the ground] He was creating an earthquake! [play ‘X-Men Theme Song’ track] Freddy Fast yelled out “Freddy Fast GO!” quickly pushing Suzie out of harm’s way and dashing away from the falling ceiling [Whilst standing, push your hands out in front of you before running on the spot quickly]. He ran and he ran and he ran but Tough Buff kept stamping and punching, stamping and punching [Whilst standing, beat both hands on your chest and let out a masculine sound, then begin punching high above your head into the air, and stamp your feet on the ground]. Freddy did his best, but eventually, the falling building was too tough, and soon he was completely covered and trapped by bits of debris [Look upwards as you raise your hands to cover your face and collapse to the ground and let out a yell].

Seeing what had happened to her poor friend, Suzie stretched her arms out as fast as she could to try and grab Scream McQueen [Whilst standing, extend and stretch outwards your arms and legs]. But before she could reach her, Scream McQueen turned invisible and ran off laughing [Weave both your hands from side to side across your face whilst standing, and place your hands around your mouth laughing an evil laugh as you run on the spot]. Suzie could no longer see her, but she could hear Scream McQueen. Scream McQueen laughed, and Suzie stretched an arm out this way [Milk the silences before laughing an evil laugh and stretching one arms out across your body in front of you] but it was no good. Scream McQueen laughed again, and Suzie stretched another arm that way [Milk the silences before laughing an evil laugh and stretching one arm out across your body in front of you], but she still couldn’t catch her. Scream McQueen laughed again and Suzie stretched a leg out this time [Milk the silences before laughing an evil laugh and stretching one leg out across your body in front of you] with still no luck. Another laugh and another leg went out this way [Milk the silences before laughing an evil laugh and stretching one leg out across your body in front of you]. Things were not looking good for Suzie Stretch. She stretched out her following the laughter only to have them end up in a mess [Stretch out your fingers as you extend out your arms and cross and wrap them around your chest]. She stretched out her eyes following where she thought Scream McQueen was, but ended up crossing them instead. She even stretched out her ears to help, but soon Suzie was all caught up with her own body parts. She started to wobble [Wobble on the spot whilst standing] and fell to the floor, trapped [Collapse to the ground].

Our poor superheros had lost their first battle with Scream McQueen and Tough Buff. The place was ruined, with Suzie all caught up on the floor and poor old Freddie buried somewhere beneath the rubble. The children of Mr Evil had gotten the better of Freddie and Suzie and ran away laughing, satisfied that they had won. But even they weren’t expecting that somewhere in Australia there were a bunch of little superheros ready to save the day. What do you think everyone, can you be a superhero and save Freddy and Suzie? Well, if you’re going to be a superhero, you’ll need something to protect your secret identity.

[hand out the superhero masks]

They were many superhero friends who were ready to save Freddy and Suzie. Some of the superheros could fly, some could turn into fire or ice, and some could jump higher than the tallest buildings. Together they made their way to the ruined hideout of Freddy Fast and Suzie Stretch. [Lead the group around whatever space is available to you with arms extended as though you were flying]

Page 41: Fiction …  · Web viewWeek 7 Far Far Away. Week 8 Environmental Sustainability. Week 9 The Magic Hoop. Week 10 Growing Up. Week 11 The Emperors New Clothes Introduction- Presenting

[Action set to the ‘Indiana Jones Theme Song’ track]

When they got there, they found Suzie all tied up with her own body parts on the floor. They quickly stood her up and started to untangle her, round and round [Whilst standing with your arms wrapped around your chest and your legs crossed, slowly spin around on the spot, unwrapping your arms and legs] slowly at first, then faster and faster. Suzie was grateful, but was more concerned about her partner Freddy. Now came the hard part. Freddy Fast was buried under lots and lots rubble, and it would take all the superheros working together to help him out. Some superheros used their strength and dug with their hands [Bend down to mid-level as you dig through imaginary rubble with your hands]. Others picked up a shovel, and dug as best they could [Whilst standing, dig through imaginary rubble with an imaginary shovel]. Others used their mind to lift the rocks and bits of ceiling off from the ground, high into the air, around and around and off to the other side. [Place your hands against your head, before waving your arms up and then out to the side. Repeat 3 times moving your arms in different directions] They dug and dug and dug, not knowing the fate of their friend until, Freddy was finally found, bruised but safe! “Hooray!” shouted Suzie and the superheros. They had done it. But Freddy Fast cut the celebrations short. “We can’t celebrate just yet. Looks like there are some new super villains in town”. “Freddy’s right,” came Suzie, “Tough Buff and Scream McQueen are the son and daughter of Mr Evil. They’re super smart and super strong. We all need to be extra careful from now on superheros.” Do you think we’ll be ready for them next time little superheros? Yeah! “I don’t think this day could get any worse” thought Freddy. But just then, the phone rang…[Pick up an imaginary phone]

“Hello? Yes, this is the league of Superheroes…what?!? What do you mean Mr. Evil, Tough Buff and Scream McQueen have escaped?!?”

[play ‘Back To The Future Theme Song’ track]

The End?

Sit down and take a look we’re going to read a bookSit down and take a look at stories from ‘The Fiction Factory’

Book: Grandpa and Tom(Ask the children what sort of things they like doing at the beach. What can they see at the beach? What can they hear at the beach? What sound does the ocean make? Practice making the swish sounds of the ocean.)

Foot Story: Two mice go to the beachOnce upon a time there were two mice and when this story started they were fast asleep, snoring.(Legs stretched out straight in front on the body, toes pointing down to the floor and flexing back towards the chest to the rhythm of the snores.)When one little mouse woke up and said, “Hooray!”(Lift right leg and shake.)He tried to wake up his friend, “Wake up! Wake up!”(Tap left leg and shake.)But his friend was fast asleep, so the little mouse went and fetched an alarm clock.(Left leg continues to point and flex. Right leg bends and tiptoes out to the side, level with hip and returns to front centre. Both legs stretched straight in front of the body). The alarm clock went, “Brrrring.” But still the mouse slept.(Shake whole body gently.)So the alarm clock rang louder. “Brrrring.” But still the mouse slept.(Shake the whole body a little more vigorously.)So the alarm clock rang as loud as it could, “Brrrrring.”(Shake whole body with force.)And the little mouse jumped up, “Hooray!”(Lift left foot into the air and return to the floor).“Hooray!” said her friend. “What shall we do today?”(Turn feet towards each other, and wriggle each foot in turn as it speaks.)“Lets go on to the beach”“But first, lets do out exercises.”The Two little mice went Point and Flex Point and Flex.(Point and flex feet)Round and around, and around and around, then the other way.(Rotate ankles forming small circles with the feet.)Then in and out, in and out, in and out.In a sitting position jump feet apart then back together. And off they set. They went; walk walk, walk walk, skippity-hop, skippity-hop, jump jump, jump, Stop! (x2)(Rhythm of different steps performed using the feet in a seated position with legs bent.)The beach was big and white and sandy. The sea was wide and blue and deep. It was the biggest thing that the mice had ever seen. They ran as fast as they could along the sand, jumping over the pieces of driftwood.

(Using your feet keep the rhythm of a run on the floor without travelling. Keep your knees bent and lift your right leg, move it in an arc to the right of centre. Return to the floor. Left foot follows. Repeat three times on each side.)

When they couldn’t run any more they started to dig a sandcastle. (Stretch forward towards the feet with alternate arms as if reaching for something. Stretches should move progressively upwards until arms are reaching above the head.)

They built it as high as they could and then they knocked it to the ground and built another. (Shake upper body and arms down towards the feet. Repeat three times.)

“Look over there!” squeaked one of the mice. Resting on the beach was a row boat. The two mice scampered over and put on the life jackets, zipping them up.(Sitting in an upright position with knees bent. As zipper is fastened straighten your back and move your shoulders backwards.)

Then taking hold of the oars they started to row:Row, row, row, your boat

(Reach forward towards your feet with your arms as if rowing, as you pullback, engage stomach muscles.)

Gently over the sea(Raise arms alternately out to the side in a side stretch over the head.)

If you see a great big shark(Open legs wide into a scissor stretch, then snap shut.)

Don’t forget to scream(Spring arms and legs open)

The little mice didn’t see any sharks but they did find two fishing lines in the boat. They cast out their lies and waited for a bite. SNAP. (From an upright sitting position with knees bent, open legs out again into a scissor stretch. Arms Stretch down towards feet, keeping legs straight and ‘SNAP’ on toes.)

Then slowly, slowly, they pulled in their lines an there was a great wobbling jellyfish, which went wobble, wobble, wobble.(Creep fingers back up legs. Shake body and arms to the rhythm of wobble, wobble, wobble.)

So they cast out their lines again and waited for a SNAP.From an upright sitting position with knees bent, open legs out again into a scissor stretch. Arms (Stretch down towards feet, keeping legs straight and ‘SNAP’ on toes.)

Then slowly, slowly they pulled in their lines and there was a stingray, which went flap, flap, flap.(Creep fingers backup legs. Bring soles of feet together with bent knees, making a diamond shape with your legs gently pulse legs to the rhythm of the flap, flap, flap.)

So they cast out their lines for the last time and waited for a bite. SNAP.From an upright sitting position with knees bent, open legs out again into a scissor stretch. Arms (Stretch down towards feet, keeping legs straight and ‘SNAP’ on toes.)

Then slowly, slowly they pulled their lines and there was a big clump of floppy seaweed that went flippity, floppity, flippity, floppity.

(Creep fingers back up legs. Release spine and allow body to fall and gently pulse over left leg and then right leg to the rhythm of flippity, floppity.)

Suddenly the waves began to grow larger. The boat rocked this way. The boat rocked that way. The boat rocked forwards. The boat rocked backwards and it nearly tipped over! But it didn’t.

(Extend right arm out on your right side, press hand in to the floor as left arm stretches up and over the head, lengthening the left hand side of the body. Repeat on left side of the body. Crossing legs, stretch forwards towards the floor with both arms. With knees bent, lift feet off the floor, and lean backwards. Move into the balance and engage stomach muscles. Hold and relax.)

The two mice rowed home:Row, row, row, your boat

(Reach forward towards your feet with your arms as if rowing, as you pullback, engage stomach muscles.)

Gently over the sea(Raise arms alternately out to the side in a side stretch over the head.)

If you see a great big shark(Open legs wide into a scissor stretch, then snap shut.)

Don’t forget to scream(Spring arms and legs open)

Back on the dry sand They went; walk walk, walk walk, skippity-hop, skippity-hop, jump jump, jump, Stop! (x2)(Rhythm of different steps performed using the feet in a seated position with legs bent.)

It wasn’t long before the two mice were at home safe in bed…SNORING!(Legs stretched out straight in front on the body, toes pointing down to the floor and flexing back towards the chest to the rhythm of the snores.)

THE END!
