The last tip is to constantly get outside of your comfort zone. So what if you have never tried to make endzone stencils for a football field? So what if you have never designed a new pattern on your base- ball field, or so what if you have never rebuilt an infield skin-just do it! Even if it is not major league quality, with a little time and effort you can still do some wonderful things for very little money that the kids and the fans will never forget. 25TH ANNIVERSARYFinal thoughts on STMAs silver anniversaryBy David Minner PhD

Throughout 2006 Dr Dave Minner a turfgrass professor atIowa State University has shared in his ~QampA column Ies-SOllS hes learned as a member of the Sports Turf ManagersAssociation MO~l of those lessons were directly related to

maintaining turf But these final three lessons are more off the fieldand just as valuable

Lesson23 Volunteers whether players parents boostersor other supporters of the athletic prograJn can provide sub-stantial support for the field Let them choose between fundraismgand maintenance on the field Fundraising efforts are usually more effec-tive when they are working towards a tangible item like an irrigationsystem core aerator or mower Actual work on the field requires care-ful organization and supervision but once mastered it can result in sub-stantial pride in those involved and in community development

Le~~on24 Balance your time between field and family tomake you the best person you can be Dont lose yourself andyour family in this job IVe tend La follow the golf course profession inmany ways because of job similarities and the long hours invested dur-ing the sporting season I have often heard the NFL referred to as nofamily life for the managers and crew that take care of these facilities

One golf course survey indicated that nearly 50Uo of the superin-tendents feel that they have little free time Many of you put the fieldsand your profession very high on your list of priorities Just take amoment to consider if you are properly balancing field and family tcmake you the best person you can be Dont forget the players andfans at home

Lesson 25 Invest inthe human resource Provide education-al opportunities by joining the national Sports Iurf ManagersAssociation (800-323-3875) Budget for personnel to aLtend educationalmeetings and hands 011 workshops held by your local STMA chaptersDevelop a library of books videos and training manuals Keep trademagazines in the break room for employees

Are you looking for motivated employees Watch who does the read-ing asks the questions and takes the special interest in the field We allcaught the bug for this profession somewhere along the line Take noticeof your employees and be ready to be a mentor to those that are readyand eager to listen

Budgets are simply numbers on a piece of paper that restrict howmuch money we Gill spend in a given period of time Dont be over-whelmed by numbers on papFr and dont restrict your greatest resourcethe human resource Surround yourself with dependable competentpeople whom often exceed your capabilities and then learn to managethem Empower other-s with your vision and watch as the humanresource grows with the budget you have

Chapter ProfileSTMONY

bull Year chartered 2006 (26th Chapter of STMA)bull Number of Members 240bull Chapter Officersbull Executive Director Kevin Meredithbull President Mike Albinobull Secretary Paul Haagbull Treasurer Mike Hunterbull Commercial Vice President Nick Redantybull Dues Individual $50 or SlOO for 4 peopleeach additional member beyond 452S each students $15

The STMONY chapter has experienced greatsuccess in its first year and predicts strongcontinued growth wheraquo asked about this suc-cess President Mike Albino attributes it to acombination of several things

First their chapter structure capitalizes onlocal involvement vVe bring our events to

our members says Albino STMONY is seg-mented into eight zones and each zone has azone leader We ask the zone leader to set upa meeting place and time and T do the rest11 have a chapter meeting in one of thezones each month says Albino

He schedules the meetings in locations thathave had a particularly tough season Thatway he says the meeting and networkingsessions can help those sports turf managerssolve their problems

Albino and Executive Director KevinMeredith attend each meeting Between thetwo of them they know almost everyone inattendance and for those they dont they wantto put a face with a name ve want La meetface-to-face listen to our members and letthem know about how the chapter can meettheir needs There is no charge for chaptermeetings and Albino gets a sponsor to pro-vide the food and beverage so there are nocost barriers to attending There is one annualmeeting for all the zones

Secondly the dues structure really pro-vides a gTeat opportunity for multiple mem-bers to join Our dues structure applies to allmembers sports turfmanager and commer-cial alike says Albino

Third Albino has a very focused strategyI have identified organizations that wouldbenefit from being members such as thebuilding and grounds supervisors and the highschool athletic directors Albino says and I

direct my efforts to getting them to join I goto every green industry meeting in the state

Early on he concentrated his efforts onreaching every member of the national STMAin his region and all bTeen industry membersWhen asked about his approach he said 1 amrelentless I send multiple emails and 1faxed600 people with letters and applications

Albino credits his company BallardSports for allowing him the time andresources he spends on STMOm I couldntdo it without Ballards support he says_when asked to project STMONYs growthAlbino responded We plan to grow thechapter as large as STltA over the next threeto live years

Budgets are simply numbers on a piece of paper that restrict howmuch money we Gill spend in a given period of time Dont be over-whelmed by numbers on papFr and dont restrict your greatest resourcethe human resource Surround yourself with dependable competentpeople whom often exceed your capabilities and then learn to managethem Empower other-s with your vision and watch as the humanresource grows with the budget you have

bull Year chartered 2006 (26th Chapter of STMA)bull Number of Members 240bull Chapter Officersbull Executive Director Kevin Meredithbull President Mike Albinobull Secretary Paul Haagbull Treasurer Mike Hunterbull Commercial Vice President Nick Redantybull Dues Individual $50 or SlOO for 4 peopleeach additional member beyond 452S each students $15
