One of the great privileges of my ministry has been to serve as a member of the General Commission on Communications, one of the

general agencies of The United Methodist Church. The purpose of this commission is to “inform, inspire, and engage the people of The United Methodist Church and the world” with the message of the gospel.

At the commission’s September 23-25 meeting, we spent time in considering a va-riety of proposals for the restructuring of the church—and its agencies—in the coming four years. One of the realities looming before us was a projected reduction of ten per-cent in available revenue for doing the work of the general church, including communi-cations. It would have been easy to get caught up in conversation marked by “doom and gloom.” However, that turned out not to be the mood of the meeting.

Perhaps it was best captured for us in some words shared by Tom Bickerton, bishop of Western Pennsylvania, when he said that he had been sharing some words of advice with people, including new ordinands and commissioned ministers in the Baltimore-Washington Conference.

“Lighten up, loosen up, and have a little fun . . .” “Too many people today sleep too tight, are too intense and unhappy in the way they live,” said Bickerton

“Likewise too many churches today are the same way: too intense, skeptical and afraid. Too many pastors, people and churches have become mechanical and indifferent.” Instead, we need to “lighten up, loosen up, and have a little fun.”

That is good advice—for the General Commission on Communications, for The United Methodist Church, for First United Methodist Church, for me, and—I hope—for all of us.

May God give us the grace to “lighten up, loosen, up, and have a little fun” in the name and for the sake of Jesus Christ.

Grace and Peace, Mark Conard

Thoughts @ First

In this church, in the presence of God; you can be who you are; you can be any way you are; and you can be loved. 3

For one of my bible studies this week, I read Job 42:1-17. This book is about a godly man who underwent some of the most bitter experiences it is possible to meet. At first he says very little about his difficulties, but later in the book he begins to face the reality of what has happened to him and

declares that if he could have an interview with God he would tell Him exactly what he thought of Him. When Job faced the reality of his situation of his situation and how he really felt, then he was ready for God to

speak. But notice, if you will, when that confrontation occurred, God did not give any answers to Job’s questions. What did God do? He gave HIMSELF. Job had an encounter with God that more than satisfied him. I believe this is profoundly significant. We are to bring our doubts and questions before God, but we are NOT to

expect answers; we are to expect His presence. We must face difficult issues, for it is only when we do so, that we are ready to hear God speak. If we refuse to face

reality, then our souls are not alert to hear His voice. We can live without answers, if we know God is there! Blessings, Jeanine Rishel, Assistant Pastor

UMW News

Men Taking a Break The men’s fellowship at First United Methodist

Church is taking a break from the pattern of regular monthly meetings during the school year. This is the decision reached after conversation at their meeting on Thursday evening, September 22.

There have not been any official officers for the men’s fellowship for the past several years. Those providing informal leadership include: Jay Brown, John Krause, Howard Southworth, Lynn Stansel, and Jim Stringer.

The men’s fellowship will host the traditional United Methodist Men’s and United Methodist Women’s thanksgiving dinner and program on Thursday, November 17. Otherwise, there will not be any men’s fellowship meetings for the remainder of the calendar year.

No specific plans were put in place for resuming activities after the first of the year. Men were invited to be attentive to what God might be inviting them to do next to be in ministry as men of the church.

“ . . . I do want you to experience the blessing that issues from generosity.” —Philippians 4:15 (The Message)

In this church, in the presence of God; you can be who you are; you can be any way you are; and you can be loved. 5

Our goal as a United Methodist congregation is the transformation of the world by making disciples. A disciple first must be taught the scriptures, learn how to live as a Christian, and discern God’s love and grace in their lives and the lives of others.

To make disciples successfully, we must first have teachers! We have several openings for teachers in many age-ranges. If you are interested in learning how to teach Sunday School, Bible Studies, or Children’s Ministries like Children’s Church, you can sign up or ask questions after worship with Anna Borders.

Openings by age-range include: • Nursery helper for the 3rd Sunday of the month, • Children’s Church teachers for 1 Sunday per

month • 2 rotational teachers for the Jr. & Sr. High Youth

class, and • a weekly teacher for the adult Revelation Class. Please contact Anna Borders, Youth and Education

Coordinator, if you think God might be calling—or nudging you—to be in ministry as a teacher!

Recognizing the Progressive Class The Progressive Sunday School Class, which

most recently met in Freeman Chapel, has come to the end of its life. The class began, according to the church’s history, in 1928, when “several of the younger couples from the Homebuilders, recognizing a need for another age group, organized the Progres-sive Class with Rev. Gleckler as teacher. In October 1929, Perry S. White, formerly with the Men’s Bible Class, was elected teacher, where he served continu-ously for seventeen years, until 1946. The growth of the class was remarkable, and officers of the school were constantly confronted with the problem of find-ing a room sufficient to accommodate the attend-ance. The slogan from the very beginning, was “Bring the babies.” As a result, the class developed a reputation for attending as families. Other teachers included Mrs. Jack Zerbe. Margaret Brummett taught about 1985.”*

The Progresssive Sunday School Class remained as active as possible for as long as possible. The last teacher of the Progressive Class was Everette Hayes. He served as teacher for the last 25 years.

The class was recognized during worship on Christian Education Sunday, September 25, with ap-preciation for their long and faithful service in the church. The last members of the Progressive Class were:

Chlois Buhrle Ryan Buhrle Amy Graber Grace Hessman Everette Hayes Margaret Hayes Hazel Jasper Wilma Maynard Jonetta Spence

Electronic Giving Opportunity

Starting October 1, members and friends of First United Methodist Church can make regular contribu-tions in support of the church’s ministry by means of an automatic withdrawal of funds from a checking or savings account.

Contributions can be for “General Budget,” “Mission and Ministry,” or a defined amount for each. Contributions can be made monthly on the 1st or on the 15th (or both, if desired).

Electronic contributions can begin (or end) at a date chosen by the donor. They can be from a check-ing account or a savings account. There is no addi-tional cost to the donor for using this service!

To begin electronic transfer of funds, donors need to complete an “Authorization Agreement for Automatic Withdrawal of Funds.” These are availa-ble in the narthex or in the church office. They will need to attach a voided check or voided savings de-posit slip to the completed authorization form.

Electronic contributions save time, and they help the church stabilize its budget.

Thank you for time and consideration!

Welcome New Members! Eight persons were welcomed into the member-

ship of First United Methodist Church on Sunday, September 18. They were:

Micheal Crowe, coming by transfer of member-ship from the Coldwater United Methodist Church;

Will (Bill) McCue, coming by transfer of mem-bership from the South Hutchinson United Methodist Church;

Jerry Schussele, coming by transfer of member-ship from Grace United Methodist Church in Wichi-ta, KS;

Dale Snyder, coming by transfer of membership from the Lyons United Methodist Church;

Debi Thompson, coming by reaffirmation of faith;

Kathy Thompson, coming by reaffirmation of faith

Shawn Wyatt, coming by transfer of member-ship from First United Methodist Church in Abilene, KS

Sheena Wyatt, coming by transfer of member-ship from First United Methodist Church in Abilene, KS.

It is an honor and privi-lege to welcome these persons as members of First United Methodist Church! Please ex-tend a personal welcome, as you have the opportunity to do so!

Sanctuary Sound System Funds Raised! We have now raised the entire amount needed to update the church’s sound system, including the radio

room! The total adjusted cost is $28,599. There have already been improvements that cost $4,000. The original funds for this purpose came as part of the gift “in memory and honor of Ida Jane White Mur-ray,” given by Ralph Murray, who was a boy attending church here in the 1910s.

Special gifts and memorials added to the funds, and the Chancel Choir led a “March Madness” fund-raising drive last spring.

The Donation Bake Sale on Sunday, August 21, resulted in contributions amounting to $1,088.00, and the offering for the Special Music Sunday (August 28) brought in $4,037.25! That put us over the top in terms of what was needed.

The work will be done by Sparks Music. It will be done the third or fourth week in October. We anticipate a “thank you” concert sometime in November or December.

Thanks to everyone who shared in making this important project possible! We look forward to improved sound in our sanctuary, as we praise God to-gether!

9 In this church, in the presence of God; you can be who you are; you can be any way you are; and you can be loved.

World Communion Sunday World Communion Sunday will be celebrated

this year on Sunday, October 2. This is one of our Churchwide Special Sundays, observed in The Unit-ed Methodist Church throughout the year.

It is an opportunity for us “to be in communion with Christians all over the world and to enable us to ‘press on toward the goal’ of serving God in life-changing ministries.” The special offering received that Sunday supports:

• World Communion Scholarships, administered by the General Board of Global Ministries, with at least one-half of the annual amount for minis-tries beyond the United States; and

• Ethnic Scholarships and Ethnic In-Service Train-ing programs related to the General Board of Higher Education and Ministry. Our participation in World Com-

munion Sunday is one of the ways that we are about the business of “Changing the World. One Life at a Time.” In 2010, members and friends of First United Methodist Church contributed $133.00 for this Special Sunday with Offering.

School Supplies Delivered

School supplies collected by the people of First United Methodist Church were delivered to the Early Education Center, Avenue A School, Lincoln School, and HMS-7 on Tuesday, September 20

The supplies were contributed for the use of teachers and staff. Along with the supplies donated by members and friends of the church, a case of 8 1/2” x 11” multipurpose paper was also delivered.

The supplies and paper were re-ceived gladly!

First United Methodist Church who are currently em-ployed in a school system were recognized during morning worship on Sunday, September 18. They were invited to come forward and introduce them-selves. There was the presentation of a “flexible ap-ple” and a “Winner” medal, followed by a prayer for their year.
