FOREWORD

Th e Texas Gene ral Exhibit ion, now in its fifth year, is stillan infan t in the calen da r of American annual exhibitio ns.Born in the unsettled months followin g th e European beginning of the pr esent war , it had scarce ly begun to walkbefo re the tragedy of Pearl Harbor bid well to stop anyfurther growth if not it s very existence. But it is a lu stychild, and though cri ppled by circ umstance it cont inu esto meet the purposes for which it was instituted.

The Texas General Exhibition is a competit ive exhibit ionarranged and held conjo intly by three Texas museums withthe purpose of showing a gro up of work s representativeof the ar tis ts of the state.

Thi s yea r 171 individuals submitte d 288 work s for the consideration of the jury. From these, 87 works by 71 indioviduals were selected for exhibition. In a measure, the jurywas guided in its selection by th e requ irement s of spaceand transport at ion facilities, but the primary and governingconsi deration was the degree of attainment reached by th evarious arti sts in the particular works sub mitted.

Th e falli bility of art juries is well known, and the jury forthis exhibition mad e no claims for exception. That the exhibi tion is filled with thought-provoking works demonstratesthe artistic matur ity of the artists of Texa s, is a source ofgratification and a pr omise of a rich future.
