THE TEXAS GENERAL EXHIBI

FEBRUARYAND MARCH

1940

HELD BY THE DALLAS MUSEUM OF FINE ARTSTHE MUSEUM OF FINE ARTS OF HOUSTON. THEWITTE MEMORIAL MUSEUM OF SAN ANTONIO

FOREWORD

The Texas General Exhibit is the out come of a desire on thepart of the Art Museums of Dallas, Houston and San Antonioto show a group of art work s which would be representativeof the entire state. Collective action would avoid duplicationof effor t as well as dilution of quality, which ar e naturalresults of exhibit ions of similar nature held during the sameseason in the three cities.

Moreover , by showing the exhibit successively in eac h city, not only a wider audience should be reached but the practical limitations imposed by transportation should aid in thedevelopment of a high standard of excellence.

Th e idea of cooper ation between museums in planning exhibitions is no new one but it has been applied but rarelyto a competitive exhibition and for Texa s, it is a new venture.

Like all new ventures, its greates t development and fulle stvalu e lie ah ead , but alread y the effort is ju stified by theready resp onse given by the artists. Th e nin ety-eight exhibitscarefully selec ted by Paul Gardner ar e the real "proof of thepudding," and if th ey are the cau se for present congratulation , even more ar e they the pr oph ecy of a rich future.

JAMES CHILLMAN, JR.

At th e invitation of th e three Mu seums. th e Exhibit wa ssel ec ted and Awards made by PAUL GARD NER, Direct or ofth e William Rockhill Ne lson Galler y of Art, Kansa s City,Missouri.
