was donated. We hope to use some of these funds to do some capital improvement projects
as well.

Summer’s End Highlights Help a Child Learn!
Friends Learning in Pairs (FLIP) is seeking volunteers 55 and older to tutor students in
reading at these Madison area schools: Amqui Elementary, Taylor-Stratton Elementary and
Bellshire Elementary. Tutors are also needed for Hermitage, Donelson and East Nashville
elementary schools. Tutors spend two hours a week during school hours tutoring at a
school near their homes. Training, materials and staff support are provided. If you are
interested, contact Michele Clark, FLIP coordinator, at 615 860-7180 or
[email protected]. FLIP is a program of RSVP and FiftyForward.
Understanding the Ballot - Monday, August 4
The August 7th ballot will be particularly confusing and long. The Election Commission
anticipates that it will take voters 8-9 minutes to complete the ballot! The judicial retention
votes, in particular, need more explanation in order for people to be prepared to vote. The
League of Women Voters is committed to educating voters about elections and the
election process in a non-partisan way. Come and listen as they help you better understand
your voting choices on Monday, August 4th at 10:30 a.m. Please sign up at the front desk.
A Conversation with Cora - Thursday, August 7
Cora is back! Come visit with Cora Lavin, our previous Program Director, as she regales us
with tales of her experiences in Venezuela this last year. She’ll have a presentation of
Pictures and Q&A. She’ll also introduce us to someone special who will give us a cello
concert. Sign up at the front desk to join us for fun, fellowship and refreshments on
Thursday, August 7th at 1:30 p.m.
Tasty Tuesday Café - Tuesday, August 19
You may remember how you asked for JJ Kent to come back after her performed for us at
Celebration of Culture Month in February. Well, we got him! Celebrate American Indian
Heritage Month with JJ, Native American singer, guitarist and flutist on Tuesday August
19th at 11:30 a.m. Beforehand, indulge in a tasty trifecta of chicken salad, garden salad and
Jell-O salad. Purchase your $5.00 ticket by Friday, August 15th.
Luau - Thursday, August 21
What’s a better way to finish out the summer then by hulaing in fine, grass-skirt style?! We
expect you all in your Hawaiian finery to join us on Thursday, August 21st from 5:00 to
7:00 p.m. Dine on island-inspired grilled, pineapple teriyaki chicken breast, rice pilaf, sweet
potato dish and Hawaiian sweet roll. Then shake out those grass skirts as Melanie Ching,
Hula Specialist, demonstrates and gets us all hulaing to the Native Island sounds. Purchase
your $5.00 ticket by Monday, August 18th.
Back to School September will be “Back to School”
month at the Center. We want to know what kinds of classes, programs, arts, etc. that you
would like to participate in!
Please see the front desk to make your
suggestions.
