MOLLY BURACK ANNUAL LECTUREThe FaithfulAuthor: Rachel ReubenThe Faithful is The Chosen for a new generation, with Potok’s 1940’s Brooklyn giving way to gritty 1990’s Crown Heights. Well, today, Strawberry Fields is here, a look-alike, sound-alike Beatles tribute, dedicated to bringing you, the audience, as close to a real Beatles concert as you can get. RENOIR, THE SCHOOL OF PARIS AND THE BARNES FOUNDATIONRenoir, along with several other artists who saw the world in a radical way, turned the Parisian art world of the 19th Century on its head. We will examine Renoir’s long and productive life in the context of the Impressionist Revolution. Then we will discuss why, after the turn of the century, it was the School of Paris with Jewish émigrés like Modigliani and Soutine, who defined avant-garde art despite pervasive anti-Semitism in France. The genius of these artists on display at the Barnes Foundation in Philadelphia will astound and delight!

NJJFF EXTRA! EVENTCuba’s Forgotten Jewels: A Haven in HavanaCuba’s Forgotten Jewels explores the little-known story of the Jewish refugees who escaped Nazi-occupied Europe and found a safe haven on the Caribbean island of Cuba. In 1940, Cuba took in 6,000 Jewish refugees, including hundreds of Jewish diamond cutters and their families who, for a few years, turned the small tropical island into one of the world’s major diamond-polishing centers. Through rare insightful firsthand interviews, survivors recall their lives in wartime Havana: the attraction to Cuban food, music and dance, its language and people, as well as the challenges they faced in this unfamiliar land.Wednesday, May 16, 12:30pmTickets: $5; Free for NJJFF Sponsors
