Majority Of Sodelpa MPS WantedRabuka In

A majority of SODELPA MPs andmembers wanted Sitiveni Rabuka backo help the party earlier this year, it has

    been revealed.

This revelation was contained in anemail from party nancier and co-optedmanagement board member SakiusaRaivoce. The email was sent to MPs and seniorparty members. In it, he said he wasnformed 10 out of the 15 SODELPA

MPs wanted Mr Rabuka to help the partybecause of his leadership experienceas a former prime minister and formercommander of the Republic of FijiMilitary Forces.Mr Raivoce conrmed the email but saidt was out of date.

When asked whether he still held thesame view about Mr Rabuka, he said:“My stand is always clear, I wanted himo come back to the party but it is the

party decision for him not to come backand I respect that.”However, it is not clear where thatparty decision was made unless he waseferring to last year before the general

election. After the election loss andhe post-mortem there was certainly a

groundswell of support for Mr Rabuka.Carrying on from the momentum of

hat support, SODELPA president RatuNaiqama Lalabalavu offered Mr Rabukaa vice-presidential position in the annualgeneral meeting that was originally setfor last Saturday. Mr Rabuka said hewas going to think about it because hewas rejected last year when he appliedo become party leader. Leading the

opposition against him was Ro TeimumuKepa and the women’s and youth wings.Ro Teimumu subsequently was electedparty leader and became Oppositioneader. Mr Rabuka was upset last week

when he saw Ratu Naiqama issuing a

oint statement and pictured with RoTeimumu saying they were united. Hehen resigned from the party sayinghose who disliked him because he ledhe 1987 coups, had not changed their

position.n his email sent last February, Mr

Raivoce wrote: “We need to resolve thessue on Major Gen Rabuka soonest.

For info, I was the one who informedhe Party President Col Waqausa and

members of his interview panel (PMLQ.Tuimalekai, Jim Bulatavo) in the

presence of the Party Leader at ourmeeting in June last year, that Maj

Gen SLR is to step down and not beconsidered as a candidate in the lastelection, because our Youth and WomenCouncil was against his nomination.

“The reason being is that he wasinvolved with the rst military coup of1987 ,all the ex-Army Ofcers now withSODELPA ,was part of the coup of 1987,I see no reason why we should not allowhim to come and help the party at thistime, because the military is still verymuch involved with the current Govt.“The interview panel accepted my

proposal and Maj Gen SLR wasinformed accordingly, that he was nolonger a candidate and later that eveningas protocol demand, the Turaga TuiCakau, Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, who

supported Major Gen SLR to be acandidate of SODELPA, was informed

by the party president Col Waqausa,Savenaca Kamikamica and self.“Ratu Naiqama reluctantly accepted thenews, but did not want to hurt the partyas time for election was against us. Hetold us that we should all support RoTeimumu to be the party leader.“There is a need now to allow Major GenSLR back into party, I need not elaboratehere his experience as a politician andqualications as former PM and military

commander.“I agree as Mere has alluded to, thatthere is no disrespect for Ro Teimumuour Party Leader, she remains PL andLOP. Major Gen is coming to help, he isa Military Strategist can be very usefulwith our Task Force Team.“He has support from inside the partyand outside. Man Gen is a nancialmember of the SODELPA, unless theParty Constitution has changed. I aminformed that 10 of our current MPssupport Major Gen to come and help us.I hope that NEC and the Management

Board will endorse this proposal fromthe Western United Front (WUF) co-ordinator Luke Ratuvuki.”These are excerpts of a phone interviewwith Mr Raivoce:CAVA: Do you still hold that view andthat is for Mr Rabuka to come back tothe party?RAIVOCE:  My stand is always clear,I wanted him to come back to the party

but it is the party decision for him not tocome back and I respect that. That wasthen, we have moved on we don’t want

to come back.CAVA: Why not now? What changed?

RAIVOCE: I don’t know I think better not comment on it because Annual General Meeting is comingand that will be discussed at the AG

we will leave it at that after the AGMThursday.CAVA:  But do you think Mr Rabushould come back?RAIVOCE:  Look I served with has an ofcer and he is a memberSODELPA, if he wants to come backcomes back.CAVA:  But do you want him to co

back?RAIVOCE:  Look I will reserve comment until the meeting because Inot want to pre-empt what is going tosaid at the meeting. I might want him

come back and then he’s not going toappointed so I will leave my commI’ll reserve it.CAVA: But why did you want to invMr Rabuka?RAIVOCE: That was in July or Aphe was my former Commander Prime Minister, I worked close with hand I know his ability and capability it was at that time. We need to moveso the party decided that he is not toreceived by the party so that’s it, he not contest the elections, I don’t th

we should bring back the issue nHe has said it in the paper that you, Sun, reported that he has resigned frSODELPA so I’ll leave it at that, I dowant to comment again.CAVA: During that time did you invMr Rabuka because you saw that

party was not performing and it neehim?RAIVOCE:  No, No there is a lot

people in the party who can perfowell….The phone then went silent.

    Blood-Covered Murder-Accused Was'Proud' Of Killing

An Auckland man who stabbed hispartner to death told the dead woman'sniece "you are too late, she is no more",a court has heardTaxi driver Jiwan Ram,63, is on trial

accused of murdering Bimla Wati inNovember last year.Wati, 47, was found dead at her MtWellington home after suffering six deeptab wounds.

Ram admits killing Wati but is arguingt was manslaughter rather than murder.

The Crown's rst witness, Wati's nieceRangeeta Gounder, told the court thatwhen she arrived home to the scene, shencountered Ram at the front door.

He was covered in blood, she said.He said 'You are too late, she is no

more'... the way he said it, he was proudof what he did, but his facial expressionwas different - he was sad," she told theourt.

Crown prosecutor Dale Dufty said inopening that the pair had been togetherince 2013.

Last year the pair was renting a roomrom Wati's niece who also lived at the

house, along with two other relatives. On November 3 "a normal night" eruptednto violence after the two argued over

when to visit a family member, Duftyaid.

The two relatives heard the argumentrupt between Wati and Ram in theouple's bedroom, which later movednto the lounge. About 9pm the argument

became louder and Wati was heardcreaming.

Dufty said Ram was seen by one ofhe relatives standing over Wati's body.

When he stood up, he allegedly pulled aknife out of Wati's torso. She was stabbedix times, Dufty said, the knife piercing

her lung twice, and cutting a main arterynear her heart.

Ram ordered the two relatives to leavehe house, which they did, and shortlyafter, Wati's niece arrived. He opened the door and said, words tohe effect, 'you were too late, she is no

more,'" Dufty said.Emergency services arrived within 15minutes by which time Ram had slicedhis own wrists. Ambulance ofcerspronounced Wati dead at the scene.During a police interview, Ram said heand Wati had argued over when theyhould visit Wati's new grandchild.

She wanted to go that weekend, while

he wanted to wait until they had more

money, Dufty said.Ram said in the interview that Wati hadapproached him with a kitchen knife

saying, "kill me, kill me" Dufty said.A scufe with the knife ensued and Ramwas nicked, causing him to bleed."That's when I got really wild," Ram told

police."She kept arguing, arguing, arguing.I just stabbed her, stabbed her on theupper body."Ram, of Fiji Indian ethnicity, wasassisted in court by an interpreter. His lawyer, Hugh Leabourn, gave a shortopening address to the jury where he saidit wasn't in dispute that Ram had causedWati's death."It's not a case where the defence issaying Mr Ram was not responsible forMs Wati's death. He was, and you cantake that from me now."

He said his client was guilty onlymanslaughter, because he did not intto kill her.

Police could see blood on the wallsBimla Wati's home before they eentered the house, a court has heard.Sergeant Anthony Joseph said: "I cosee blood on the walls before I eentered the house."Joseph said Wati had stab wounds to abdomen and blood streaming down sides of her nose."She wasn't blinking, she wa

breathing".Senior Constable John Fraser said powere approached by the defendant"He was standing with his arsomewhat outstretched and I could lacerations to the inside of one or barms."The trial continues.

Hot Chilli Receptor May Unlock A NewTreatment For Obesity

THAT burning sensation you get after gulping down a ery chilli has Adelaide scientists hot on the trail of druthat could counter obesity.

The body’s so-called “hot chillieceptors”, known in laboratories as

TRPV1, also block appetite and createa feeling of fullness, according toUniversity of Adelaide researchers whobelieve this natural occurrence could behe foundation of new drugs.

Head researcher Associate ProfessorAmanda Page, of the university’s Schoolof Medicine, said the study revealed adeletion of the hot chilli receptor in miceesulted in a delayed feeling of fullness

and the consumption of more food. The stomach stretches when it is full,

which activates nerves in the stomach

o tell the body that it has had enoughood,” she said.We found that this activation isegulated through hot chill pepper or

TRPV1 receptors.”The researchers also found that the naturalbehaviour of the receptors may be disruptedby high-fat diets, so could contribute toobese people eating too much.n a study of obese mice, the researchersound a high-fat diet impaired the hothilli receptors in the body which signalullness. If we knock out the receptor as well,

here is no change ... which suggests thathe channel is disrupted in high-fat dietonditions,” Prof Page said.

The researchers then tested lean mice, who had the hot chilli receptor removedhrough genetic modication.

Those mice were fed a normal diet andwere found to eat more than usual.“This suggests that the receptor isinvolved in the regulation of foodintake,” Prof Page said.Prof Page said the research highlightedthe hot chilli receptors were involvedin sending signals to the brain and thefeeling of fullness.

“This is disrupted in high-fat dietconditions (and) it may be why it’s sodifcult to lose weight and maintain thatweight loss,” she said.Prof Page said the study could lead tonew drugs for the treatment of obesity.

“If we target these receptors it could lto a possible treatment,” she said.Co-researcher Dr Stephen Kentish, the university’s School of Medicagreed the ndings could lead to development of new therapies.“The next stage of research will invoinvestigation of the mechanisms behTRPV1 receptor activation with the a

of developing a more palatable theraphe said.“We will also do further work determine why a high-fat diet desensitTRPV1 receptors and investigate if can reverse the damage.”

    Mother's Height Linked To PregnancyLength

SHORTER mothers have genes that increase their chances of giving birth to smaller or prematurely born babies, researhas shown.

A STUDY of 3485 women and infantsrom Finland, Denmark and Norwayound that every centimeter of extra

height increased the length, weight andgestational age of newborn babies by0.05 centimeters, 10 grams and 0.34days respectively.Analysis of 697 genetic variants linkedo adult height showed that the effects

were largely gene-driven.nherited genes related to height had a

direct impact on a baby's birth weight andength, while duration of pregnancy was

determined by conditions in the womb.

A mother's height appeared to be an

important factor that inuenced thewomb environment, said the researchers.Dr Joe Leigh Simpson, senior vice

Steps To Help A Child Stop Lying And TelThe Truth

All kids lie sometimes and usually, ithouldn’t be because for alarm. However,

when kids nd that lying helps themtay out of trouble or helps them gain

attention from their peers, it can becomea bad habit. It’s important for parentso address lying in a straightforward

manner that will promote honesty anddiscourage dishonesty.

. Establish a Household Rule aboutTelling the TruthCreate a clear household rule that stresseshe importance of everyone telling theruth. This will ensure that your children

understand your expectations and valuesabout honesty.2. Role Model HonestyRole model the behavior you want to see

rom your child. This means, telling theruth all the time. Kids can’t distinguishlittle white lies” from other lies. So

don’t let your child overhear you tellyour friend, “I would love to help but Ihave a headache,” if you’re feeling ne.Your child will imitate what he watchesyou do.3. Talk about Telling the Truth VersusLyingNo matter how old your child is, it’smportant to talk about honesty versusying. Young children often need help

understanding what it means to tell theruth. Make sure your child has a goodunderstanding of what telling the truthmeans.Telling the truth versus brutal honestys another skill that children of all

ages can benet from discussing. Forexample, kids need to learn that theydon’t necessarily need to announce totheir friend, “That’s an ugly shirt,” just

because it’s honest. Balancing honestywith compassion is a sophisticated socialskill.4. Distinguish the Reason for the LieThere are three main reasons kids lie;fantasy, bragging, or to prevent negativeconsequences. When you distinguish thelikely reason for the lie, it can help youdevelop a plan for responding to it.Preschoolers often tell fantasy lies. Ifyour child says, “I ew to Disney Worldthis morning,” ask, “Is that somethingthat’s really true? Or something youwish could be true?” This can help

kids understand the difference betweenreality and make believe. If a child lies because he’s bragging, itmay be that he has low self-esteem orwants to gain attention. He may benetfrom learning new social skills and fromengaging in positive activities to boosthis self-esteem.All kids lie to get out of troublesometimes. It’s important that their liesaren’t successful. Instead, make it clearto kids that you will be double-checkingthe facts.

    5. Give One WarningIt can be helpful to give kids one warningwhen you are fairly condent you caughtthem in a lie. For example, say, “I’ll giveyou one more chance to tell me whathappened. If I catch you lying, you will

receive an extra consequence.”6. Give an Extra ConsequenceGive your child an extra consequewhen you catch him lying. For examp

instead of just taking away his electronfor the day, give him extra chores toas well. Take away privileges or restitution as a consequence for lying7. Discuss Natural ConsequencesTalk to your child about the natuconsequences of lying. Explain tas a result of his lying, there wlikely be times that you won’t be ato believe him, even when he’s tellthe truth.8. Provide Positive Reinforcement HonestyCatch your child telling the truth

provide positive reinforcement. Prahim by saying, “I know that must h

been hard to tell me that you broke tdish, but I’m so glad that you chose tohonest about it.”9. Help Your Child Re-Establish TrIf your child has a bad habit of lyidevelop a plan to help him re-estabtrust. Consider establishing a behavcontract that will help you know whe’s ready for more privileges basedhis willingness to be honest.10. Seek Professional Help

There are times when lying can b big problem for children. If your chilying seems to be pathological, ocauses problems for your child at schor with peers, seek professional helpaddress his lying.
