Concept& Research

My Idea is to re-brand the British Independent Film Festival. This ‘Mod’ look is a little but old a cliche and a fresh approach with a more solid concept and more unique identity may be just what they need. I have emailed the founded of the festival who is interested in my ideas. They are working on a small budget so thinking about low-budget unique products and ideas is vital.

I also looked into some of the most iconic British Independent Films. Films such as Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, This Is England and Trainspotting. I thought about how these can be used to promote an event, both inside and outside of our country.

I researched into British Independent Film and how it is portrayed in the UK and also to other countries. Most Independent Films are fairly low budget with most of the funding coming from The BFI (British Film Institute) of the UK Film Council, both of which are funded by the government, but work on very tight budgets.

I also looked at working Film Festivals across the world to get some inspiration but to also see what they are doing right and wrong, and what hasn’t been done before. This will help push my concept to it’s boundaries.

Branding & Research

I chose neon pink and black because this relates to British Heritage within the Punk and Mod history which is a massive part of the British Independent Film Industry. It is also a colour that is unique, making the festival stand out and leave a lasting impression on people.

I feel that colour is important to consider. It has to has some meaning to the ideologies of the festival but also be unique enough to be instantly recognisable and create a solid identity that goes beyond a logo.

There in generally a lot of meaning behind the branding and logo’s behind Film Festivals. This could be cultural or directly related to !lm such as the !lms bars in the second image and the RGB colour scheme in the third image.

I researched into existing Film Festival in the UK and worldwide to see what worked well and what didn’t. This also give me a clear idea of possible product range, and larger scale concepts and products that haven’t previously been achieved.

Product Range

I will also include tickets, schedules and way!nding maps into the range. I will experiment with this through the use of papercraft and perforation/binding techniques.

The editorial aspect of the product range will be introduces through promotional booklets, features, schedules and reviews.

The product range will be extended further though the use of popular products found at a festival. This will help build up an identity through the use of colour and branding.

I wish to create a range of posters and other promotional material. This could be in the form of stickers, bags, t-shirts etc. The poster will be paper craft to help them stand out and keep costs down.

Product Range

I want to start thinking about creating a much stronger concept. Crating an event and an experience as appose to just design. The ‘Paint Party’ idea is just one possibility that is fairly inexpensive and helps promote the brand through colour in a unique event that leaves a lasting impression.

Fitting with the colour scheme, working out how this can work in favour of way!nding systems on a much larger scale.

As this is an exhibition/festival, It is important to portray a clear idea of how the brand and identity can be applied to a wider range of products. I’ve been looking into interiors and set designs to see how this can make the design into a unique experience.

Here are some examples at how pink black and white can be transferred across web based deliverables. Both websites and Iphone Applications.

Projection is a big part of cinema and anamorphic design !ts in with this idea perfectly, whilst also creating a low-budget, last-ing impression for promotional purposes.

Black ink on neon pink stock is a cheap and effective way of portraying the idea of the brand across a range of products whilst dealing with a low budget. There are also interesting techniquees that are failry cheap to achieve such as hole -punching or laser cutting to create type and perferation.

UV Glow in the dark paint is something that I have been researching into. This !ts seamlessly with my concept that !lms are shown in the dark. This is faily expensive to apply in screen printing inks, but there are cheaper alternatives such as spray paint.

I’ve been looking into some paper craft and formats that may be suitable for my concept. Things that are able to achieve on a low budget but that leaves a lasting impression. 3D tpye, paper craft posters or interesting and innovative folding techniques.
