Empire MagazineThe Empire magazine is possibly one of the best know film magazines in the UK. Its fame allows them to have a bigger readership enabling them to benefit big-budget films in need of as much advertising and promoting they can get. Thus, Empire is known for their promotion of the big-blockbusters of the season and big-budget films. They feature films such as Iron Man, I Am Legend, Wolverine, etc, which are all more action-related and if not, are definitely all of bigger budgets and mainstream. This is not to say that they never feature lower-profile films, but never as their feature film.As most film magazines, it features reviews about films coming out soon and behind the scenes perspectives into their “front cover” film.

Sight & Sound Magazine Covers

Sight & Sound MagazineThe Sight & Sound magazine differs from magazines such as Empire and Total Film however. It is a more “serious” magazine which discusses other aspects of the film industry. It is published by the British Film Institute (BFI) and it is known for its high-brow reputation, providing its readership with much more of a critic’s insight into film-making.Unlike Empire, its does not feature its feature film on the front always and it is recognised instead for featuring famous or break-through directors. It tends to focus on films as “creations” and sometimes “artistic pieces” rather than just visual entertainment. Its cover designs are normally not too bright and distracting, and more simplistic.

Little White Lies Magazine Covers

Little White Lies MagazineThe Little White Lies magazine is the newest out of these magazines I have researched, after only releasing its first issue in 2005. It is based on a much more different concept than both Empire and Sight & Sound as it uses artistic illustrations and photography to promote their feature films. It can also be assumed that this is their unique selling point as no other film magazine as famous and with as big as readership as Little White Lies has such artistic illustration intertwined with critiques and behind the scenes perspective of their films. Each issue they release has a different artistic design, generally relating to their feature film, a design which follows through the entire magazine layout inside.
