It pretty much amounts to the Holy Grail of packaging – managing to align the latest innovative attributes of the industry, combining eye-catching design, eco-friendly materials, incredibly efficient machinery, all the essential elements of safety and security, ensuring sustainability and even attending to the fine details of delivery, all to produce a packaging solution that is truly perfect in every way. But whilst the quest to reach this pinnacle of packaging purity may be never-ending thanks to the manner in which the varying areas of the industry constantly reinvent themselves, their products and the services they offer, it certainly doesn’t appear to stop anyone out there from trying.

This is one of the perks of editing this fine upstanding organ: I get to see all the hot new kit and caboodle that keeps the retail packaging business rolling as soon as it’s announced, across the entire spectrum, and get to learn about how it’s all being employed to make this business even better; a privileged position, indeed.

Which leads me (as though I’d almost pre-planned this) neatly to the content of this very issue – it’s nothing short of a celebration of all that aforementioned innovation, invention and downright ingenuity. Indeed, within these pages lies the very latest information on every aspect of the trade, all the materials, machines and movers and shakers which, while individual entities in the context of the coverage, when brought together form a glorious whole: yes, the perfect package about perfecting packaging!

And if you think that laboured claim is way over the top, well, you’re probably absolutely right.

However, bombast aside, this issue really is chock-full of essential industry news and views, so turn the page and get up to speed…

Industry NewsCANS CANThe Indie Beer Can Festival, the first UK-wide search for the very best independent beer in cans has been launched by the Can Makers in partnership with the Society of Independent Brewers (SIBA). Every independent brewer’s beer, regardless of current pack format, is being offered the chance to be showcased in cans at the Indie Beer Can Festival final and potentially be crowned king of the cans.

Selected judges will decide the 12 Festival finalists based on written entries then each of those not already in cans will receive an exclusive limited production run provided by the Can Makers. In September, at a closed session, influential judges including Chiara Nesbitt, Beer Buyer for Tesco, industry experts Adrian Tierney-Jones and Jane Peyton, President of Cask Brewing Systems Inc, Peter Love and Graham Fenton, Chairman of the Can Makers, will put each of the 12 to the test. The winners will be revealed later in the day at the Indie Beer Can Festival; one beer will take the gold and two runners up silver and bronze, with all winners receiving trophies and e-badges.

Graham Fenton, Chairman of the Can Makers, says: “Independent beer is an increasingly important part of the drinks market. I’m delighted that we’re able to partner with SIBA to offer today’s growing number of brewers a chance to explore the can’s benefits and share the passion they have for beer with a wide audience. I hope that this helps to establish independent beer in cans as a key part of the growing market.”

FINNS ON THE UPRKW, one of the leading manufacturers of plastic films and nonwovens, has been once more singled out by the European Flexographic Industry Association (EFIA) for its excellent print quality. At the awards ceremony for the EFIA Print Awards 2014 in Bolton, the Business Unit RKW Finland won gold in the category ‘International Flexo Print on Film’.

This is the third time that a packaging solution from the RKW-Group has received an EFIA award. This year, the company impressed the jury with an outer packaging design for the Finnish brewery Sinebrychoff and its KOFF Lite brand. The film was printed using the latest Full HD Flexo technology – and the brilliant end product is the result of close cooperation between RKW Finland and Finnish company Marvaco Ltd., one of Northern Europe’s leading manufacturers of repro and printing plates.

What sets the outer packaging apart in particular is its exceptionally efficient implementation, printed using the three colours cyan, magenta and yellow (CMY) instead of the normal four-colour printing (CMYK). Esko Full HD Flexo technology delivers impressive printing results thanks to its unique dot size, fine highlight printing, smooth transitions to zero and an outstanding solid ink lay down.

“We are delighted with the award, which is also an incentive for us to continue setting the highest standards in terms of quality and precision.” said Pekka Saariluoma, Managing Director of RKW Finland.

The Business Unit RKW Finland is one of the world’s first printing companies to receive the Esko Full HD Flexo Certificate. To obtain this

M&H Plastics, part of the RPC Group, has developed a method ofprinting Braille characters directly onto plastic packaging. A high-build varnish is used to print the Braille dots directly onto theproduct using extremely accurate control measures to ensure theheight of the Braille alphabet remains uniform throughout thepackaging run.

Samples of the Braille printing have been analysed by theRoyal National Institute of Blind People and measured against theMarburg and RNIB standards. The RNIB has validated the samplesstating that readability was found to be good as the 0.30mm dotheight is above average. This new technique complies with BS EN15823 as an approved Braille labelling system.

Braille printing directly onto the product also has significantbenefits over labels which can be easily damaged or peel off.

Although developed for Braille, this process can also be used in traditional screenprinting allowing customers to highlight specific design features by using an embossedeffect. 20Tel: 01502 715518 | www.mhplastics.com

RETAIL PACKAGING PRODUCT NEWS

The lowdown on the latest releases, renovations, revisions and revolutions…

Product NewsCHEESUS SLICED: SUPERLIGHTSlimming down to look sexier and up planet-saving credentials, Italian manufacturer Gruppo Francia has reduced the packaging weight of Aldi’s private label ‘Cucina’ mozzarella cheese by half, after switching to the SuperLight pot from RPC Superfos.

Lighter packaging and reduced carbon footprint were the top priorities when the German supermarket giant, responding to customer demand, asked its supplier to source a new pack. Subsequently, the SuperLight pot is less than half the weight of its predecessor, meaning a significant reduction of the total costs for the packaging.

Because SuperLight is made of a single material, polypropylene, it is easier to recycle, and another positive aspect is that SuperLight can be decorated using in-mould labelling to deliver a high quality image.

Fabrizio Francia, owner of Gruppo Francia, explains: “There were two major factors in favour of SuperLight – the opportunity to have the Cucina label displayed immaculately on the pot and the reduced amount of virgin polypropylene per unit.

“We have worked with RPC Superfos for many years and we know that we get quality and innovation. The SuperLight pot allows for substantial weight savings which leads to a more cost efficient packaging solution. Also the CO2 emissions connected to the packaging have decreased.”

Gruppo Francia is a family-owned business specialising in mozzarella and has three factories, including one in Germany. As well as supplying major supermarket chains in Europe with mozzarella products, Gruppo Francia is an official supplier to the Association of Italian Pizza Makers.

Aldi reports that Cucina mozzarella in the SuperLight pot is already delivering good sales figures.www.rpc-superfos.com

Upping the ante in the alcohol sector, Smurfit Kappa has launched its flexible generic design for its Pouch-Up® 3L, ensuring the company’s attractive Pouch-Up packaging continues to draw attention in the wine and cocktails market.

To meet growing demand, Smurfit Kappa now offers the Pouch-Up 3L with a generic design for the wine market. This enables players of all sizes to try this new packaging in small quantities, without having to customise the design. The double gusset on the bottom and on the top gives a more cylindrical shape while the attractive design brings a mix of tradition and modernity, suiting all types of wine. This product features the Vitop Original which can be easily filled by all automatic and semi-automatic machines without any need for adjustment.

The new structure of the quadruplex aluminium film ensures high mechanical strength and an excellent barrier to oxygen, guaranteeing perfect quality and long shelf-life of the wine.

The Pouch-Up fully meets the growing needs of today’s consumer: lightweight, unbreakable and easy to use. The Vitop Original® tap positioned on the outside of the Pouch-Up allows the wine to be easily poured.

With this new format, Smurfit Kappa completes its large range of Pouch-Up both in

It’s all-change over at Ugo Foods, as the UK’s fastest-growing manufacturer of chilled pasta unveils its new packaging design – soon to be present across its entire pasta product range – a 1930s inspired design conveys the brand’s authenticity and provenance as well as highlighting its family values and commitment to sustainability.

The Dell’Ugo Deli range has also been brought closer to the main brand in look and feel. It has been renamed ‘Tipo Artiginale’, an Italian term that expresses the artisan nature of the recipe. On pack, the wording ‘Tipo Artiginale’ is shown in embossed lettering to reflect the premium positioning of the range, which includes ravioli parcels with more generous fillings and special ingredients such as Italian Parmesan and Truffle.

The new packaging designs took inspiration from old railway station signage and advertising posters of the 1930s, the year Ugo Foods Group set up and started production in London. The reverse of the packaging includes a short Ugo family story accompanied by a black and white historical family photograph of founder Luigi Ugo, giving a glimpse into Dell’Ugo’s family history and heritage and bringing the brand to life.

“We finally have a pack which communicates our core values to consumers in a meaningful way,” says Chairman and third generation family member, Paul Ugo. “For example, we’ve been sourcing wild Porcini mushrooms from the same region of Italy since my grandfather’s day and it is these values of heritage and provenance that we are now communicating through our new packaging designs. My Father and Grandfather would be very proud.”

Alongside the redesign, Dell’Ugo has also launched its new consumer website, providing a home for all Dell’Ugo branded products, featuring recipes, cooking advice and company history.www.dellugo.co.uk

PRODUCT NEWS RETAIL PACKAGING

Stylish Tails cocktails are making a huge impact in the drinks world with their premium blends and innovative pack, which combines the design and engineering expertise of RPC Containers Market Rasen and Blackburn.

Launched in early 2010, Tails allows consumers to enjoy bar-quality cocktails in less than 30 seconds and was initially aimed primarily at the at-home market. Now, in addition to being made available through retail giant John Lewis in-store and online, Tails cocktails are being served in London’s West End theatres, where the striking pack is displayed to create visual impact.

The packaging is designed to look and function like an authentic cocktail shaker. Consumers just have to add ice, shake and serve. Designed by Small Fry Design Studios, RPC Market Rasen developed the four-part injection moulded lid, which allows the cocktail to be dispensed just as it would be in a bar. The lid is assembled and then printed with a four-colour design at the Market Rasen factory, using a semi-automated four-colour Tampo printer.

RPC Blackburn manufactures the ISBM PET base, which is decorated with a shrink sleeve. The base is induction sealed after filling to give the product tamper evidence and shelf life.

Tails inventor Nick Wall’s vision was to allow consumers to enjoy high-quality cocktails away from bars without needing lots of skill and a large drinks cabinet. Nick says: “The pack not only allows consumers to experience the rite of creating a high-quality cocktail, it also helps provide a visually-striking point-of-sale feature.”

As well as being available in-store and online at John Lewis, Harvey Nichols and through Ocado, the cocktails are now on sale in Ambassador Theatre Group’s London venues including the Lyceum, Apollo, Piccadilly, Duke of York, Harold Pinter, Playhouse, Trafalgar Studios, Donmar, Phoenix and Fortune theatres. www.rpc-blackburn.co.uk

Recently unveiled at interpack, Rieke Packaging Systems has introduced a new user-friendly, child-resistant closure specifically designed for aerosols with 1-inch openings, targeted at the growing automotive additives market.

The growth of special additives to improve engine performance and protection in both European and Asian markets has led to the requirement of retail pack sizes, pack sizes which, of course, necessitate the need for effective child protection. To that end, the Rieke closure features an easy push-and-turn mechanism which prevents access to the products by children (certified according to ISO 8317) but at the same time is easy to use for all adults, including seniors. In addition, a pull-out plug seal in the closure provides tamper-evidence as well as ensuring a leak-free performance during distribution and while on-shelf.

The 32mm closure is injection-moulded in polyethylene and available in red or white, although special bespoke colours can be specified for large orders. Plus, covering all bases, an optional funnel is also available to help dispense the product.www.riekepackaging.com

SLIP SOME SKINFollowing the creation of the highly successful Mii make-up brand in 2010, Pearlfisher has created the brand strategy, naming, tone of voice, identity, graphic and structural packaging and marketing collateral for Kissed by Mii, the new tanning range from Gerrard International.

Made with marine minerals including coral seaweed extract, Kissed by Mii offers a sophisticated, calm and reassuring experience, in a celebrity saturated world where tanning can be seen as complex, frenetic and full of potential disaster. Designed for use in spas, salons and at home, the Kissed by Mii range includes an exfoliator, mitt, moisturiser and tanning lotion in two shades for all skin tones.

Pearlfisher Creative Director, Sarah Cattle, described the design approach: “When done well and with consideration, a tan makes us feel like we are a better version of our natural selves. Therefore, Kissed by Mii needed to bring to life the positive and emotionally enriching experience that reflects the feeling we have when we’re tanned – making consumers feel great from the inside out.”

She continues: “The illustrative style and colour palette makes reference to the marine minerals that are unique to the brand, whilst the sophisticated touches of gold in the identity and illustration reflect the glow of sun-kissed skin.

“The brand’s tone of voice has been carefully designed to cut through the confusion of the tanning category, quelling previously common worries about the smell, shade and longevity of different tanning brands. Clear brand messaging communicates the three simple stages to ‘prepare’, ‘bare’ and ‘care’ for your skin using the Kissed by Mii range.”www.pearlfisher.com

The Fort Knox of packaging…

Essentra Prism Tape – when security is paramount.

12 www.retailpackagingmag.com

RETAIL PACKAGING PROTECTIVE PACKAGING

Packaging plays an essential role in ensuring the protection of goods through the supply chain and to the consumer, not only in terms of ensuring that products are not damaged and therefore wasted, but in other important areas such as anti-counterfeiting and tamper evidence. Essentra is an acknowledged leader in security technologies, which are used in over 1.5 trillion products worldwide. As well as tapes and labels, these include proprietary taggant systems with reader technology and security inks in all formats. With an in-house technical laboratory, multi-language, highly experienced sales and support teams, and sites in all geographic regions, Essentra can offer its security solutions on a worldwide basis.

Technology, materials and design can work together to deliver many of these benefits, bringing various elements together to maximise security, and ensure an effective packaging solution that’s tailored to the specific brand and pack, for the benefit of both brand owners and consumers.

As an example, integrating pack functionality such as easy opening or resealability with brand protection technologies ensures that trust in the product is maintained. Tamper evidence is demonstrated effectively to the consumer alongside delivering the functional benefit of maintaining freshness through resealability. Combining security technologies, and adding the functionality of tape or labels, builds a cost-effective, secure packaging solution that meets the anti-counterfeit, anti-tamper

or authentication needs of modern brand owners. Protection and packaging therefore works on many levels.

HOLO HELPFor example, a new range of authentication labels from Essentra offers a unique and cost-effective way of building product protection into packaging – enhancing consumer trust, reputation and brand loyalty. It comes as counterfeiting is increasingly highlighted as a key consumer concern, with brands which fail to take heed risking a negative impact on brand image and trust, while for consumers using counterfeit products can potentially result in injury or other serious health consequences.

Essentra’s solution uses the company’s specialist in-house designs to create labels featuring secure

holograms. Marrying sophisticated print with secure holographic base stock means that customers do not have to produce their own bespoke holography, saving time and money and, equally importantly, because the technology and the resulting label are sourced entirely from within Essentra, the supply chain is completely secure, guaranteeing the authenticity of the labels.

Designed for use across a wide range of markets – including food and drink, luxury and consumer goods, pharmaceuticals and medical devices – the labels combine sophisticated holography with security print to protect brands and revenues.

ESSENTRA ESSENTIALSAs well as its standard authentication label offering, Essentra is a member of the International Holographic Manufacturers Association (IHMA), and can also create bespoke hologram designs.

The base holograms contain layered security features that are extremely difficult to copy. In addition, special void adhesives and structures, which leave visual evidence when removed and cannot be reapplied, provide valuable protection for products against tampering.

Security is further enhanced through the use of Essentra’s specialist security print, designed in the company’s state-of-the-art studio and using bank note level technology. At the same time, this enables labels or tapes to be personalised in order to create effective brand identity and on-shelf differentiation.

Holograms – both standard and bespoke – are also at the heart of Essentra’s Prism range of tapes, where the use of holography combined with print offers brand protection, which can be instantly recognised by the consumer and is difficult to copy by would-be counterfeiters.

By blending layered security solutions within its design, packaging can play an essential role in ensuring the protection of goods, simply and cost-effectively.www.essentra.com

reduction of the number of flexible packaging layers being used, in part due to packaging reduction initiatives by many leading FMCG producers, but also because of improved barrier performance and developments in barrier resins and materials. One example is the introduction of styrene-acrylonitrile (SAN), which helps to combat the issue of foil fracturing caused by creases.

Given this wider choice of new design concepts – incorporating pouches, films and laminate foils – manufacturers need to carefully consider their future inspection requirements. Many have successfully used metal detection systems for decades to ensure food is free of metal contaminants. As well as wanting packaging that keeps foodstuff fresher for longer, both consumers and retailers seek product security. Loma Systems is seeing a clear migration towards x-ray systems to ensure food safety remains of the highest standard.

X MARKS THE SPOTGenerally speaking, metal-based packaging is not always compatible with metal detectors; this is when x-ray detection systems come into their own. X-ray systems have no problem seeing right through these packages and are able to detect very small contaminants inside, ranging from metal fragments, glass, stones, bone and ceramic. Plus, they are suited to food producers that handle a variety of different packaging.

Contaminants aside, another benefit of x-ray detection is the technology’s ability to spot missing products, imperfections or low fills. Take the Loma X5 range; as an x-ray system, it can literally see inside the container of a ready meal or box of chocolates, alerting operators if product is missing or broken. What’s more,

The Fresh PrinceTONY BRYANT, UK SALES MANAGER FOR LOMA SYSTEMS, EXPLAINS HOW THE PACKAGING MARKET IS EVOLVING AND THE BENEFITS OF X-RAY DETECTION OVER TRADITIONAL METAL DETECTORS…

Adoption of foil laminates in the flexible packaging market is leading the freshness food agenda, delivering a longer shelf-life, changing how consumers interact with products and presenting new challenges in relation to food inspection equipment.

In 2012, the European converted flexible packaging market was valued at £12.1 billion, reporting a 2.1% growth in consumption. Confectionery, fresh and processed meat and poultry, cheese and dairy, coffee, dried foods and cereals, and baked goods all experienced sales exceeding 1 billion. One area anticipating explosive growth in the next decade is aluminium foil packaging – about 75% of which is used for food.

According to the European Aluminium Foil Association’s 2013 report, thinner gages of aluminium foil, used mainly for flexible packaging and household foils, led the market in the second quarter, with a rise of 2.3% compared to the previous year. This indicates that consumption of aluminium foil in food applications is experiencing stronger gains than the overall flexible packaging market.

Delivering prolonged shelf life to valuable foodstuffs, aluminium foil provides a barrier against air and light. What’s more, foil can have a bright or metallic finish, and can be lacquered, printed or embossed. The ability to add high-end graphics can be more striking in design and appealing to consumers. Plus, when a metallic finish is used, consumers will often perceive it to be a premium quality brand. It’s also much lighter in weight and is more compact compared to rigid packaging.

X-RAY VISIONARYTo put this growth of foil into context, glass packaging is beginning to level off, with European growth at less than 2%, compared with flexible packaging at 4%. There is a marked trend in the

today’s new generation systems can handle product density variations and can memorise up to 200 products. Complying with retailer’s Codes of Practice, they are as robust and reliable as conventional metal detectors.

LOMA ARRANGERFood producers and packers face all types of operational risks, and their ability to demonstrate due diligence to retailers and consumers in relation to contaminant detection and product integrity remains paramount. Although there are many viable detection systems on the market, Loma Systems remain one of the few to offer the full range. Requirements vary depending on individual risks. With all of these developments in food packaging, it’s worth asking the question: is my inspection equipment meeting my packaging needs?E: [email protected] www.loma.com

decisions are made in-store and the Corrugated Packaging Industry is embracing printing technology, such as High Quality Post Print (HQPP), to produce exceptional RRP for promoting goods through multi-functional, colourful packs, without compromising product integrity.

PRINTS CHARMINGFull-colour digital printing in itself is nothing new to the Corrugated Sector, but it is set to be transformed by the latest innovative and exciting technology that will offer low-cost, digital print, on demand, and provide the functionality to add personalisation. This will allow corrugated packaging to support brand owners and retailers with increasing digitalisation to cater for seasonal or event-based on-shelf promotions that require short-run or variable print capabilities, as well as mass customisation. By offering different printing techniques, the industry provides considerable choice for brands.

By working with print specialists, the Corrugated Packaging Industry can also develop the most precise and effective technologies to support the use of interactive tools, such as smartphone apps and Quick Response (QR) codes, to meet the growing appetite for instant access to product information through mobile devices. Corrugated Packaging companies are developing interactive and multimedia RRP that help build greater customer loyalty by providing the platform for a plethora of digital services and information. These enable shoppers to check on the

The UK Corrugated Packaging Industry is investing significantly in new technology in response to a challenging retail landscape, as brand owners seek ever more effective on-pack communications to entice customers to buy their products. Through various packaging innovations, corrugated is providing creative retail-ready packaging (RRP) opportunities, while still delivering the supply chain with a highly functional solution that enables both suppliers and consumers to benefit from improved product marketing and presentation.

In an era of fast-moving consumer goods, where items ordered online often travel great distances, every piece of packaging has to perform at its best in getting the product from the retail outlet to the consumer without any damage. The Corrugated Packaging Industry comes into its own as brand owners need packaging partners that can adapt quickly, if they are to make the most of new opportunities.

UK Corrugated Packaging companies have introduced innovative transit solutions which save on storage space and cut costs across the supply chain. Lightweight papers have resulted in a 7% reduction in weight over the last seven years, with no loss of strength. Additionally, the UK Corrugated Packaging Industry is working hard to reduce its carbon footprint, which fell by 16% between 2005 and 2011.

A new type of flute (between the commonplace B and E) that offers optimum strength with improved space efficiency has also been developed. On the high street, numerous studies suggest that purchasing

latest dietary data, such as the recommended daily quota of fruit and vegetables for a healthy lifestyle, or to provide price comparisons and even to enter competitions.

Branding packaging from source to shelves is an ideal opportunity to add value, create brand loyalty and influence shoppers. Innovative branding to entice consumers to connect with products is what the Corrugated Packaging Industry is becoming renowned for – its flat printable sides making it easy for brand owners to get their message across.

The industry is already a pioneering force in sustainable, lightweight, recyclable packaging that does not compromise the integrity of the goods, while innovative developments in engineering have led to new types of even more efficient corrugated packaging solutions.

CORRUGATED COOLOne of the many food and drink companies benefiting from this type of innovation is Premier Foods. The business reported impressive cost savings and increased productivity at its Ashford plant, following an overhaul of transit and display packaging for its range of Batchelors dried foods. After implementing a corrugated solution, packaging throughput has increased by 50%, while the removal of other packaging materials has enabled the business to reduce its secondary packaging costs.

Another corrugated technology beneficiary is MillerCoors, which has a novel pack design made from corrugated board incorporating a water-resistant inner lining. This enables a cardboard take-home pack of bottled beers to become a coolbox when the consumer adds ice or water.

By developing hygienic liners and coatings, corrugated packaging is playing a significant role in improving in-store shelf life. Liners can reduce the amount of fibres needed in the pack, resulting in lower input costs for produce growers, while coated substrates, such as ethylene absorbing corrugated board, slow down unwanted ripening and help in the battle against food waste.

Thanks to innovative thinking, corrugated packaging is meeting future challenges head-on and has been transformed from a simple brown box for conveying goods, to an attractive, shelf-ready, packaging solution, with eye-catching promotional graphics.www.paper.org.uk

Packaging Mobility...getting packaging containers off the ground.UK packaging component manufacturer Item Products has been granted a European patent for Trundler™ for their PACKAGING WHEELS system with the US patent soon to follow.

Trundler™ comprises a range of plastic wheels that can be easily attached to large, heavy or awkward to carry primary or secondary packaging and provides a benefit to both consumer and retailer. In many cases, such as the Silentnight mattress pack, Trundler™ alleviates the need for separate home delivery therefore encouraging an impulse purchase

and enhancing the product’s “green” credentials. Trundler™ is ideal for use with white goods, electronics and home and garden products.

Trundler™ also works well in the retail environment to mobilise display stands, bulk bins and merchandising units and in the warehouse removes the need for a forklift or pallet truck. Comprising a fixed or steerable wheel with a chassis and connecting clips there is also a foot that can be used to keep product or pack off the floor.

The system is totally reusable and can be applied, without tools or fixings, at any stage in the supply chain from the manufacturer to consumer without the need to open the box or modify the packaging. Trundler™ is also recyclable through the domestic waste recycling stream and is manufactured using recycled materials. For more information visit www.item-products.co.uk and click on the “wheel” tab or call 01582 391898 for samples or brochures.

Film Star – National Flexible can change the way you save on costs…

Looking for a new film solution? It’s in the bag! Food for film thought…

18 www.retailpackagingmag.com

RETAIL PACKAGING FILMS & LAMINATES

What have Burtons, Greggs, Jordan’s, ASDA, Iceland, Kinnerton Confectionery and over 40 other companies got in common? They have all sent delegates to the National Flexible Film & Print Training Workshops.

This question was posed five years ago on the National Flexible website. It was posed to stimulate interest in a Glossary of Film Acronyms in common use throughout the flexible packaging industry from ALU to SIOX. This glossary, along with a guide to what films are used to pack which products, was so popular that it was downloaded no less than 140 times in its first week and hundreds of times more over the next five years.

The success of these data sheets alerted National Flexible to the thirst for technical knowledge about films for packaging and printing and led to the birth of the training programme used today, which covers not only films and printing but origination and graphic design. Today’s emphasis for supermarket and brand owners is on NPD not packaging technology, thus their buyers no longer enjoy the support of the large packaging departments of the past. Many rely on their suppliers for expertise in films, origination or

graphic design, many of whom have little motivation for change. Consequently they utilise the same films and print technologies year after year with little innovation.

FLEXIBLE WORKSHOPSFor some 10 years National Flexible had been running internal training programmes to educate everyone in print and film technology. We recognised that our customers had a similar need, thus the Flexible Packaging Workshops were created.

Initially the focus was on the basics of packaging. The 4 Ps: Performance, Protection, Presentation and Price. However it became evident that many of those attending wanted more information on the latest developments in flexible film, its origination, printing and design. Thus the programme was extended with an emphasis on the practical use of technology to improve quality, save time and/or money. This package, allied to a presentation from NXL Design (a sister company to National Flexible specialising in flexibles), gives a comprehensive insight to delegates of not only the basics of flexibles but also the latest developments.

Some delegates attending recognised the potential for change within their own company operations and as a consequence requested an independent review of their current flexible packaging usage. These projects have in some instances been a remarkable success, due primarily to the reasons outlined above, leading to the conclusion that the majority of companies do not review their film portfolio regularly.

FLEXIBLE THINKINGIn 2012/13 National Flexible identified over 30 new films; these were usually presented at exhibitions around the world. The most successful example we have of the effectiveness of the Film Consultancy/Packaging Reduction Service is where one multi-site food company will make annual savings between £500/600K in one year. The replacement films were all extensively trialled and have been successfully integrated into the manufacturing process. And these savings will continue year after year!

Another more modest example is a saving of £30K per annum on just one product line. In this instance the same film had been used since the machine had been installed 12 years earlier! The alternative film had been available for at least five years, thus the cost of this inertia could be said to be £150K!

These may be extreme examples but, to date, in nearly every consultation undertaken, cost-savings or packaging reductions are achieved or productivity simply improved.

So confident are National Flexible that most companies can make ‘beneficial’ change that, subject to a cursory look at the product lines and packaging machines, we will pay a fee for the Consultancy, in return for 50% of the first years savings! Plus, the ultimate offer, National Flexible will also pay the capital cost to install new packaging machines where we know cost can be saved, providing we can share the subsequent cost benefits with the customer for an extended period of time.

RETAIL PACKAGING BLISTER & DISPLAY PACKAGING

Thermo DynamicEVER THOUGHT OF OVERCOMING THEFT WITH THERMOFORMING? PACKAGING SPECIALIST BOB BOLTON OF BARTON GRANGE ADVERTISING EXPLAINS HOW…

Theft has always been an issue for retailers, costing them considerably more than a small fortune every year. The UK Centre for Retail Research published 2012/13 figures for retail crime revealing that customer theft cost the retail industry £2.2 billion. Theft of products presented in thermoformings represents a tiny percentage of this figure but is still sufficiently significant for manufacturers and retailers to sit up and take notice when something comes along that could help minimise losses.

Goods packaged and presented in thermoformings offer excellent product visibility, especially in combination with attractive and colourful insert cards. It’s a key reason why thermoformed packaging is chosen over other pack types; ironically though, it can make products eye catching to more than just the paying customer.

SURE THINGThermoformers have devised various innovative solutions to reduce pilferage over the years, the most effective of which is High Frequency welding. Who amongst us hasn’t endured a battle to get a product out of an HF welded pack before finally capitulating and cutting the pack open with a pair

of scissors? They really are very secure! A downside to welded packs is that they require expensive and bulky machinery to perform the welds, which adds to the cost of the final product. Nothing provides a secure pack quite like a weld, but a newly patented closure system, devised by Stockport-based thermoformer Macpac is arguably, the company says, the most secure alternative yet.

The new closure system debuted at the recent Packaging Innovations show where it was met with considerable interest. They say the best ideas are the simplest and this new closure is no exception. It was designed specifically for clamshell style packs and has been incorporated into Macpac’s new range of retail ready self-locking clamshells known as Surecel. The closure takes the form of a stud fixing that is simply pressed together to securely close the pack. The ingenious stud design means that once closed the pack is extremely difficult to re-open. When the closure is integrated into a Surecel pack the double-side wall design of the pack makes it even harder to compromise. The walls do not give way even under severe pressure, which makes them not just secure at the POS, but also more protective for finished packs in transit. Another feature of the Surecel pack is that double side walls enable thicker crumple free product cavities due to the ‘male forming’ process. This affords the product with greater protection and often enables the pack to be made from thinner gauge material without compromising strength. This more economical use of material has obvious environmental benefits too.

SECURE AS STANDARDSurecel packs are made from RPET, which is predominantly the material of choice for most thermoformed packaging as driven by the retail market. RPET cannot easily be HF welded making this new closure even more valuable. The Surecel Standard range is available in a variety of shapes and sizes attractively designed specifically for retail with clean stylish lines. There is no tooling cost for this range making them competitively priced. The range can be customised with an add-on shape to precisely fit a product, for a modest additional tooling cost, that would be considerably less than the cost of a fully bespoke tool.

Macpac operate from newly refurbished premises that include extensive in-house design and tooling facilities to complement modern energy efficient Illig pressure forming machinery. The company is fully BRC/IOP accredited and offers warehouse capacity to store over 600 pallets of finished goods on behalf of customers. They supply a wide variety of industries of which retail is a specialty.www.macpac.co.uk

HLP Klearfold works with a total different philosophy compared to other packaging producers. We do not look to sell you packaging that is commonly found in your industry, our aim is to supply you with improvements, efficiencies and advantages; essentially the collective benefits of our capabilities and experience.

This concept has been proven to work both ways during this difficult economic climate we are all suffering under. So, when designing your pack, we carefully map your desires and match them to our desires. This way you get exactly what you asked for – something which lifts your product from the shelf, with the necessary needs being fulfilled rather than exceeded, leading to an optimal price/value ratio.

One of our many satisfied customers once said: “Packaging is not like a mobile phone contract where you pay for 100% and use only 10%, every single part of a package must add value.”

DESIGNED FOR LIFEWhether designing a new pack or redesigning an old one, HLP Klearfold’s employees will avoid that 90% extra that your product doesn’t need and, on the contrary, will seek out features which enhance the appeal of your product but do not add cost.

food-related industries, we’ve got the right people able to advise you on how best to achieve your objectives.

KLEARLY BETTERBeing the world’s biggest and most experienced transparent packaging producer, HLP Klearfold has many extras to offer:- Own material production, litho-printing, flexo printing, silkscreen printing, foil-blocking, creasing, HF-creasing, gluing, assembly, thermoforming, tube making and toolmaking – all under one roof.

To maintain our position as leader and innovator in transparent plastic packaging we invest in the latest printing and converting technologies. Our latest purchase is a new state of the art, 13-colour web flexo printing press. The press produces plastic folding cartons with exceptional print quality and which are very cost effective. The wide format press has one rotogravure printing station and 12 web flexo stations, which can be configured to print on either side of the web. In addition, cold foil units and rotary silkscreen stations can be interchanged with any of the web flexo stations. This remarkable new press allows HLP to accomplish in a single pass, what would have required five or more passes using traditional UV offset printing, with off-line silk screen printing and foil stamping.

HLP Klearfold is one of few packaging companies in our field that is BRC and ISO certified. The fact that we produce our own sheet material allows us to recycle all process- and post-consumer waste, in-line with our environmental policy.

In other words: HLP Klearfold is your packaging partner that thinks your way!T: 01684 273 905 E: [email protected]

Instead of receiving your tender and answering it in an unthinking way, we take the proactive approach and talk to the technical people involved in the packing of your products to ensure progressive efficiencies in your factory as well as in ours.

HLP Klearfold’s soft crease folding boxes are proven to reduce handling costs by at least 50%, even when packed by hand. By considering and evaluating all the parameters set jointly by you and ourselves, we offer a fast turnaround in development and even faster use of our packaging in your production.

Trimming the design to its most perfect size reduces wastage, labour-cost, transport, storage and increase efficiency – bringing benefits to all, and our superb printing techniques will lift your product above the average presentation. It’s our goal to let your product sell itself and we help to achieve this by imbuing it with a stimulating and fresh design.

Our local European staff are advisors rather than sales-people, with great knowledge, experience and who speak your language. They are spread across Europe, so there is always someone nearby to help you with your challenging packaging endeavours. RETAIL PACKAGING WRAPPING MACHINERY

The importance of shrink wrapping continues to expand particularly as many manufacturers and suppliers are beginning to make the change from cardboard boxes. Shrink wrapping is much more cost effective than cartons, usually saving between 50-75% on material alone. Proven to be much more efficient as the equipment has the ability to collate products automatically, shrink wrapping also saves space within the warehouse and distribution process as one pallet of shrink film is the equivalent to 15 pallets of cardboard. Plus, it’s even considered to be more environmentally friendly, as less packaging is used and what is used is 100% recyclable.

Yorkshire Packaging Systems, the leading supplier of shrink wrapping machinery and films for almost 40 years, have found that the importance of back up and support within the shrink wrapping industry and the availability of UK held spare parts is often overlooked, and as technology continues to improve, shrink wrapping machines are increasingly becoming faster and faster; which is why YPS supply a wide variety of high-speed side sealers designed to work with high-clarity polyolefin shrink films. For example, one of the mid-range machines that YPS can supply has the ability to wrap up to 130 packs per minute, and we’ve found that fast response, back up and support is more critical than ever as the technology grows ever more expedient.

SPEED DEMONWhen using machines such as these, reducing down-times is crucial, as for every minute that the equipment is not working there are 130 packs per minute missing from production. The high speed side sealers which YPS supply are coupled with energy efficient shrink tunnels with infrared technology which reduces the power requirements needed for the

any film currently available – this in itself has considerable environmental benefits.

VANISHING POINTMany thousands of tonnes of polyolefin shrink film ends up in landfill every year and so the BYO film, through a process of oxidation, disintegrates into components which are ‘bio-assimilated’ by soil micro-organisms, ensuring that the film will completely disappear in under three years, compared to over three hundred years for conventional polyolefin shrink films.

Importantly, BYO is also fully recyclable, as many polyolefin shrink films currently are, and so this important avenue is not lost through the use of BYO. However, statistics show that the vast majority of polyolefin shrink produced today still ends up in land fill and so BYO is the first polyolefin material in the world to address this issue by doing the decent thing and disintegrating.

Designed to cope with the stringent demands of modern packaging, advancements in film technology and the ever-increasing high speeds required to keep pace with production schedules, YPS have the high quality machinery that can do the job. That, backed by first back up and solid support, will keep you maintaining 100% efficiency no matter how fast the world gets.E: [email protected]: 01924 441355www.yps.co.uk

machinery. In keeping with this, YPS also supply high-clarity, low shrink temperature shrink films from Bollore in order to keep the carbon footprint of the machinery at a minimum – yet another advantage of using YPS shrink wrappers over cardboard boxes for packaging.

YPS also supply a biodegradable shrink film (BYO) which has been developed by Bollore. This film shrinks at the highest free shrink ratio of any film on the market, seals and shrinks much more quickly, and does so at considerably lower temperatures than

RETAIL PACKAGING MACHINERY NEWS

Some of the sharpest new tools of the packaging trade…

Machinery NewsPACKAGING SALAD DAYSSouthern Salads is one of the UK’s leading suppliers of freshly prepared salads, vegetables, slaws and fruit to the food service, food manufacturing and travel sectors, and Packaging Automation has been a supplier to said Southern salad suppliers for a number of years since they originally bought a Vision 4000 machine. From that point a good relationship developed and when Southern Salads needed to increase both productivity and efficiency in the packing of their salads they had no hesitation in returning to PA for new machinery. Subsequently, the decision was taken to purchase a high speed eclipse SL6 tray sealer.

The SL6 is a high throughput machine capable of sealing up to 100 packs per minute and has provided Southern Salads with cost and environmental benefits combined with greater efficiency, minimum downtime and a consistent seal on all packs.

For flexibility and long-term value the eclipse SL6 can be easily converted to a twin lane machine to give speeds of up to 200 packs per minutes, and to save on critical downtime, tool changeovers on the eclipse tray sealers can be done manually in two minutes as a result of an inbuilt tool loading system. The ingenious top tool comprises single impression removable cartridges to enable continued operation during repairs and routine maintenance. Quick release cutting blades on these allow for replacement in seconds and spare cartridges are supplied to enable full capacity operation at all times.

Established in 1963, Packaging Automation can offer customers a tray sealer or pot filler for a wide range of applications in the food industry, including fresh produce packing, ready meal sealing and packing, and pot or tub denesting, filling and sealing for puddings and sauces.

PA also has experience in the medical and consumer goods sectors offering machinery for blister packing a wide range of products, truly covering all packaging bases.T: 01565 755 000 www.pal.co.uk

CORR BLIMEY

Lincolnshire Field Products, winner of the vegetable grower of the year award in 2012 and a supplier of fresh produce to several high street supermarkets, has reported major productivity improvements at its 6500ha farm in Spalding after purchasing the FR305, along with Ulma Packaging’s Sienna LSBS box motion machine.

Ulma’s FR305, one of the latest developments from the innovative manufacturer, incorporates a rotary jaw, a streamlined simple to operate console and an ergonomically designed cantilever to reduce debris accumulation, making cleaning and sanitising far easier.

This model, which is currently flowrapping pre-pack courgettes at up to 40ppm for Lincolnshire Field Products, has been built around a state of the art PC processor which stores up to 99 different packaging profiles, enabling a high level of flexibility for different product changeovers.

Key features include two independent motors which are synchronised electronically, easy service access and left to right operating direction. The standard in-feed conveyor is two metres in

Full colour digital printing on corrugated packaging will be transformed following the unveiling of pioneering CorrStream® technology, according to the one of the world-leadets in the supply of corrugated kit, the Sun Automation Group.

Having launched its new three-strong range of high-speed digital, single pass, full colour corrugated printers at a special event in front of an invited audience of packaging professionals at the Group’s EMEA headquarters in Bristol, the new Corrstream 66, 40 and 20 offer the corrugated converting sector unrivalled speed, reduced costs, efficiency and outstanding print quality, bringing inkjet sophistication to mainstream applications as a real alternative to conventional analogue methods.

As well as the key ability to ease the pressure on box makers’ operating costs at the lowest batch levels, compared to flexographic printing, Corrstream allows for increased value added through print on demand as well as the opportunity for convertors to reduce or remove traditional costs such as origination and plate-making.

The CMYK digital printers allow graphics to press in hours instead of days, small or large production runs at speeds of up to 8000 sheets per hour, personalisation and graphic changes, data merge capabilities and mass customisation.

Sun’s Global Product Manager for Corrstream, Sean Moloney, said: “This innovative technology, which incorporates new inks and print systems, is the culmination of several years’ development work and will bring a unique print dimension to the corrugated industry. Despite deploying some very sophisticated systems, we’re confident Corrstream is an inkjet printer for mainstream production that users will find familiar.

“Interest from marketers and packaging buyers in digital packaging is growing, due to its ability to provide high quality, variable graphics with short lead-times and lower stock costs. The corrugated industry needs to react and become yet more flexible in offering even greater variety in print to aid sales in an ever more sophisticated consumer space.” T: 0117 940 1777E: [email protected]

length, which is suitable for most food applications. However, Ulma Packaging can also offer bespoke options, for those packaging unusual sized products.

Meanwhile, Ulma Packaging’s Sienna LSBS flow wrapper, developed entirely for the flexible wrapping of various products, was also purchased by Lincolnshire Field Products for packing its range of whole cauliflowers and is currently wrapping around 30ppm of whole cauliflowers.

Ulma has a long and impressive background in the fresh produce for the packaging of a cross-section of products, including tomatoes, potatoes, onions, mangos, avocados, oranges, lemons and even kiwis.T: 01909 506 504E: [email protected]

Label Tec Scotland has invested in its first inkjet label press – the Epson SurePress L-4033A. Based in Airdrie, Label Tec has been printing labels for the spirits, cosmetics, white goodsand pharmaceutical markets for over 19 years. “My mission while visiting Labelexpo lastyear was to find a digital press that would enable us to offer high quality labels on a widevariety of substrates without having to make a huge capital investment,” says Paul Dunne,Label Tec Director.

“Having looked at the main stream offset digital presses and the UV ink jet systemsavailable it became apparent that either the capital investment was too high, or the limitationof printable substrates and lower print resolution was prohibitive. The only machine I couldsee that was different was the Epson SurePress.”

The SurePress L-4033A uses Epson's SurePress AQ ink which includes green andorange to give a wide colour gamut for precise colour matching and accurate reproduction ofspot/speciality colours.

When wrapping confectionery items, display packaging is key. The mostimportant thing is to ensure that the product looks good on the shelf sowrapping in high clarity polyolefin display shrink film providesoutstanding presentation and total flexibility with equipment assize changeovers are quick, easy and change part free comparedto other types of display packaging such as over wrapping.

Another method of packaging for the confectionery market isshrink wrapping. This offers more flexibility to the manufactureras there are no change parts required for the machinery.Confectionery producers wrap multiple box sizes so not havingchange parts is a major advantage for them, making thewrapping process much easier. The machine operators can run all ofthe different box sizes through the machine without having to alter parts. This also saves costs on not only the parts themselves but also down-time from changeovers.

RETAIL PACKAGING ENVIRONMENT MATTERS

With sustainability gaining more column inches in the press than ever before, consumers are getting equally more demanding in the sustainability standards they want in the products they buy and the services they use. Few consumers however are prepared to pay a premium for such ‘green’ products and increasingly the pressure is put on brands and in turn, their suppliers, to act sustainably with the same cost to the consumer. So sustainability is being driven throughout the supply chain, and at Rexam we are seeing three key areas of focus: ■ Carbon Foot-printing (in the supply chain) There has been a definite trend with consumer

goods companies setting carbon reduction targets. Many of these targets started as scope 1 and 2 direct with emissions reduction targets for gas and electricity, however as carbon foot-printing has become better understood, organisations are starting to take a more holistic approach and are looking at supply chain scope 3 emissions. For example, in the soft drinks and beer sectors, around 45% of CO2 footprint is packaging, which puts increasing emphasis on companies to work more closely with supply chains to make a real impact.

■ Product Responsibility There has been a shift with companies taking the

responsibility for products that are used by end-consumers. For example, clothing retailers and washing powder brands are trying to encourage consumers to use their washing machines at lower temperatures. In many cases, this highlights that the biggest potential results on carbon emissions are with the consumer and that this phase should therefore be the key focus. In the beverage can industry, carbon studies have highlighted the significant influence recycling has on the carbon footprint. The metal packaging industry has responded for a number of years with consumer education campaigns such as ‘Every Can Counts’ and ‘Metal Matters’, raising overall recycling rates across Europe.

■ Ethical Standards Another aspect of sustainability which has come

under scrutiny is the wider ethical and social aspect. This has been most apparent in the food sector with MSC and Fair Trade Certification. Rexam and the wider Aluminium industry have responded to this challenge by launching the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI). The ASI’s aim is to devise a standard that can act as a tool for responsible sourcing of aluminium, as well as a material stewardship collaborative framework to improve the overall sustainability performance of the entire value chain of products containing aluminium.

BEST PRACTICEAt Rexam, we try to work closely with all our suppliers and customers on joint initiatives to benefit the whole supply chain. The Carlsberg Circular Community is a recent example which has set up a collaborative platform between Carlsberg and its packaging

see more collaboration and co-operation between companies to jointly address carbon reduction targets. These collaborations are likely to be across a number of organisations within a supply chain to the whole lifecycle of the product, rather than the focus being within one organisation or one part of the supply chain.

We are also likely to see new issues on the agenda, for example, water is becoming the ‘new carbon’ as concern about water availability and the potential effects of climate change grows. There is also a shift from recycling to ‘zero waste to landfill’.

So, with increasing awareness on sustainability issues amongst consumers, brands, suppliers and authorities, it’s vital that the positive role packaging plays in our society is communicated well; and that the stakeholders are fully engaged with what the industry is doing to push the sustainability agenda forward.www.rexam.com

suppliers. It aims to increase the creation of sustainable innovations, create clean materials streams that are optimised for reuse and recycling and support the sharing of knowledge between companies creating resource efficient products. The initial focus of the Community will be the certification of products to the Cradle-to-Cradle® design framework.

LOOKING AT THE FUTUREWith the current focus on carbon and ethical supply chains embedded in organisations, we are likely to

Save the planet? Yes we can!

ENVIRONMENT MATTERS RETAIL PACKAGING

Retailers and growers of fresh produce are facing an ever more picky public. Favouring only the most cosmetically appealing fresh fruit and veg, misshapen produce is often left for waste, (that’s if it even makes it to the shop floor). However, Dufaylite is using its sustainable packaging product, Envirolite, to work with supermarkets and growers in combatting this problem.

Households contribute to half of the 15 million tonnes of food that is wasted annually, according to a report from the UK’s Global Food Security programme, with statistics showing that up to 40% of Britain’s fruit and veg never reaches the shelves because it doesn’t look good enough. Last year, Tesco revealed that around two thirds of its food is unsold and goes to waste, with approximately two out of five apples

going uneaten. Pressures over food wastage now mean that retailers are having to become more savvy as to how they market what is deemed by the public as ‘misshapen’ fresh produce, and consider how to educate consumers that shape doesn’t affect quality or taste. Tesco has since tried to use unconventionally shaped produce in its value ranges as it believes that customers are less likely to be choosy about how the product looks.

However, despite efforts to raise the profile of ‘ugly’ fruit and veg, pressure is still on growers to produce food that meets supermarket standards. In addition to the shape of the fruit, which is required to fit into the rigid, pre-moulded fibre trays that only accommodate certain sizes, supermarkets are now turning away produce that is damaged or blemished.

MAKING FOOD FITRecognising the issues that both parties face when it comes to tackling fresh food wastage, we at Dufaylite have been working with growers and suppliers to develop a simple solution using our 100% recyclable packaging product, Envirolite. Using our paper honeycomb technology, we have created flexible fruit dividers that provide pre-assembled compartments to separate individual goods within boxed trays. Unlike the pre-molded fibre trays that are rigid, our dividers provide a greater level of protection for produce of any shape, moulding to fit the individual piece of fruit without applying the downward pressure that can sometimes occur with other tray dividers. As the solution is made from paper, it also helps to keep produce fresh by allowing it to breathe.

Working with companies such as Alfred Harrold Containers Ltd, we regularly tailor the solution to work for different types of produce including fruit like apples, pears and oranges. The box dividers can be easily made using different paper grades and to different sizes, allowing them to provide solutions for any number of heavy or different shaped items.

An issue that is always considered when it comes to retail solutions is the

effect packaging has on the environment. With pressure being applied to retailers to

reduce their carbon footprint when it comes to packaging

disposal, the fact that our dividers are 100% recyclable is a great way

for both growers and retailers to help support this drive. Using less material to create than regular tray dividers, the Envirolite solutions are specifically designed to also take up less storage space. Many growers have limited facilities to allocate to storing product transportation packaging, so we used our honeycomb technology to make the dividers completely collapsible – one pallet load of packed dividers is sufficient to pack 45 tonnes of apples alone!

SHALLOW ABOUT SHALLOTSThere is still work to be done to get past the prejudice that consumers have towards produce that doesn’t fit the ‘catalogue’ image of fruit and veg, however by protecting and supporting perfectly tasty yet misshapen produce effectively as possible, we’re hoping to help growers dispense their products more efficiently and safely, and help retailers to continue the drive for consumer awareness with products that may be misshapen, but are perfectly intact thanks to packaging that effectively supports them.www.enviro-lite.co.uk

KEEP YOUR EYES PEELEDFOR THE NEXT ISSUE OF RETAIL PACKAGING

INDUSTRY INSIGHTCURTIS PACKAGING

Curtis Packaging has been around for some time. Could you start with a brief history of how it all began?Curtis Packaging was founded in 1938, initially set-up to produce paper bags for the grocery trade. During World War II Curtis was drafted in to help in the war effort and when the war finished the company moved into producing labels and record sleeves for LP’s. Years later Curtis progressed to carton board packaging, and staying in the industry we moved into the high-quality sector which we maintain, enjoy and are thriving in.

Now in its third generation of ownership, we’re still a family run business with John Curtis as chairman, Ben Curtis as Commercial Director, James Williams as Managing Director and myself as Sales Director, although staff now numbers 42 and turnover is in excess of six million.

The company has recently made some monumental changes by purchasing a new six colour printing machine, expanding the factory and most recently purchasing a window patching machine.

Sustainable packing is Curtis’s thing, so how is your approach to achieving environmental excellence better than the competition? In 2007 James and I realised that whilst business was successful, the print and packaging industry was changing and that we needed to adapt and change with the times; changing the name to Curtis Packaging was the first step. Next was to focus on the environmental issues, with this came our mantra: “Packaging that doesn’t cost the Earth”.

By taking this approach, the company worked towards receiving a full FSC accreditation and becoming a Carbon Neutral company. We have also been certified with the internationally recognised IS0 14001 standard for effective environmental management systems, including changing inks and varnishes to vegetable/soya based inks and water-based coatings, and chemical-free plate making.

We were asked to become associated with the World Land Trust back in 2012 which is something we are proud of – the first print and packaging company in the UK to be associated with this international conservation charity.

Do you specialise in producing packaging for one particular industry or market area? Our largest share of the market is the beauty industry, covering approximately 70% of business. We are involved in other areas such as healthcare, organic and pharmaceutical industries. Some of our clients include automotive, drinks and luxury fine foods.

Walk us through commissioning Curtis, how does the service go from start to finish? There are seven steps of service we commit to our customers: 1) Consultation – to understand is to listen; 2) Design – having established your needs, our design specialists will bring your ideas to life; 3) Pre-production – each project is minutely examined and reviewed before production; 4) Production – nearly all our production is in house; 5) Quality Control – we have our own Curtis Quality assured level (a programme strictly adhered to derived from years of experience to ensure best results); 6) Logistics – whatever the challenges, we pull out all the stops to ensure delivery gets there by the promised date; and 7) Aftercare – we hope a Curtis customer is a customer for life, and to that end we keep customers up to date with the latest developments to ensure they stay ahead of the game, and also run reviews to ensure packaging needs are kept in-line with the latest trends and solutions.

At the Packaging Innovations show earlier this year you showed us the awesome Video Box. Care to explain what it is, what it does and how it’s a game-changer?The video presentation box has been specifically designed and produced for use on almost any product. Many months were spent researching and developing a unique system that allows four different videos to be uploaded, complete with volume and a pause control, allowing the brand to engage with the consumer on a completely new, thrilling level.

The first to take advantage of this product was world-renowned make-up artist Charlotte Tilbury, launching her latest eye make-up range ‘Bigger, Brighter eyes’. When the lid opens a tutorial automatically plays featuring Charlotte Tilbury herself explain how to create bigger, brighter eyes.

This product enhances our ability to produce innovative yet stunning packaging whilst keeping with our environmental policies and credentials.

So, 76 years on, Curtis Packaging is stronger and even more innovative than ever; so what’s next?Last year was a monumental year for us. By winning Small to Medium Enterprise of the Year at the Packaging Awards we were imbued with even greater ambition to expand and keep moving forward. We are currently looking at bigger premises as the team continues to grow, and our intentions for the year ahead are to build our sales team further along with researching new technology in view to investing in a new digital press.

We will continue to provide innovative award-winning solutions for both customers and employees alike!www.curtispackaging.co.uk
