Wellfleet Harbor - basic info and background:
• Very shallow area: see bathymetry map (slide 8)• Benthic substrate includes sand, gravel, mud
and SAV (slide 9);• Historically used for shellfishing and
for aquaculture bringing $1.2 - $2.3 million/year (American Oyster (Crassostrea virginica), Quahog (Mercenaria mercenaria), Soft shell clam (Mya arenaria), Bay Scallop (Agropectin irradians)
• Description GIS maps are on slides 7-11;
Identified four potential activities are planned for the Wellfleet Harbor
(WH):
• Marine sanctuary for shellfish
• Marina
• New Aquaculture site(s)
• Tourist resort (recreational area)
Pre-selected five areas are proposed for placing the identified activities in WH:

Your assignment is to:1. Based on the environmental and socio-economic
assessments of the Wellfleet Harbor area explain and justify where would you place four activities and how did you decide for which activity each site would be suitable for; (‘open book’ research for info and data)
2. Design your suggested management plan and potential best scenario – use given maps to place your uses or any other GIS and software tools of your choice;
3. What type of indicators will you use to monitor and evaluate your suggested plan and management decision? (e.g. select 5 environmental and 5 socio-economic indicators for monitoring and evaluation of your plan)
4. Please cite all used information and provide references!!!!5. Your management plan will be presented as a word
document report with an introduction, background materials, methodology with a described step by step approach of your plan, providing figures, tables and final map design scenario with description in the results; (~ 10 pp)
