Welcome to the 5th Underground Cinema Film Festival. A champion of emerging filmmakers, Underground Cinema has the belief that no matter what the film’s budget or the director’s vision it’s the filmmakers passion that drives a film. This year presents a new generation of adventurous independent filmmaking, in which boundaries are explored, pushed and often broken. The creative means employed in these films will take audiences on a wild ride towards the future of cinematic storytelling. As technology allows greater access to short and feature films as well as filmmaking tools, an increasing number of people are turning to filmmaking as a form of expression and an opportunity to explore creative freedom. The fact that we received 200 more submissions than last year is proof of this. Within these films we saw a wave of truly original and outrageously distinctive films united by their uncompromised spirit.

One again we are delighted to bring you another action packed film festival to the beautiful seaside town of Dun Laoghaire. The line up this year is incredibly strong with shorts and features in from all over the world. This years festival will also see the introduction of Underground Cinema’s new Drive In Cinema which will be located in the Ferry Terminal in Dun Laoghaire. The Drive In will begin on September 11th and will run throughout the festival and onwards until December 8th . This years opening film is the wonderful ‘A Nightingale Falling’ directed by Garret Daly. It truly is a beautiful piece of filmmaking and we are delighted to say that it will go on nationwide release directly after it’s screening in Dun Laoghaire. Our closing film this year is Jeff Doyle’s hilarious Jack and a Ralph Plan a Murder, a great film to end the festival with. For the second year we will be bringing back the Underground Cinema Expo. This is an excellent chance to meet and make contact with some of the film industry’s service providers. The Expo will run from 2pm to 5pm of the opening day of the festival and admission as usual is free. Our festival wouldn’t be the same without our various different workshops and panel discussions. This years workshops will be held by Ciaran Creagh, Len Collin, Debs Leonard, Stunt Media Services, Sean MacGabhann and Paco Torres and once again all our work shops are free of charge. Our panel discussion will take place in the Laurel Suite this year at 230pm. Joining us on the panel this year is Garret Daly (A Nightingale Falling), Ciaran Creagh (Parked), Terry McMahon (Patricks Day), Conor Horgan (One Hundred Mornings) and Mark O’Connor (King of the Travellers). The subject being discussed at this years panel is ‘low budget doesn’t not mean low quality film making. It promises to be a really interesting discussion and all are welcome. One of the highlights at this years festival will be the 20th Anniversary Screening Interview with the Vampire with special guest Neil Jordan. We are delighted to welcome Neil along to the Festival this year and we look forward to talking to him directly after the screening about his career over the past 30 years right the way up to his new film Byzantium. All that is left for me to say is to enjoy yourselves and I look forward to meeting you all over the next four days of the festival Is mise le meas David Byrne Festival Director

They endure eternity in some way because of a choice, or something that’s happened to them. That’s why they’re so popular; they come out of the repository of fairy tales.’ Neil will talk to us in the Martello Suite directly after the Interview with the Vampire screening

First off, I have been a skin care and beauty junkie since the age of sixteen and I can honestly say I never went to bed with my makeup on, even when I stumbled into bed slightly tipsy I would drag myself out of it and clean my face. The thoughts of waking up with a mucky pillow and dirty face never appealed to me. I tumbled into the industry in my early twenties. After waking up one morning at the desk of my then 9 to 5 office job, with my face in a pool of saliva, and clumps of legal documents stuck to my face I realised office life was not for me, so off I stumbled to find something more to my liking. My penchant for the creative and the idea of making a living drawing on people’s faces really appealed to me, and so it was I went about learning all there was to know about becoming a makeup artist and/or beauty professional. Presently, my job as a makeup artist and skin consultant is flourishing and considering the times we live in I am eternally grateful for my work. I also write and research and I am now the Beauty Editor for the Irish Wedding Diary Magazine as well as there online Blog. Deb’s makeup workshop will take place at 12pm in the Laurel Suite. Workshops, Expo and Panel Discussions

The Workshop Scripting a short story. As most writers know scripting a short film is quite difficult as such a film has all the characteristics of a feature but everything is condensed down to a tenth of its size. A hands on discussion with real scripts written by the attendees will give the participants the opportunity to get feedback on the writing, the story, the characters and hopefully will contribute to the skill and ongoing development of the writer. The class is limited to ten attendees and all are encouraged to submit a short film of their own. The idea will be that Ciaran will pick a number of the scripts to review and discuss with the group. This will be a discussion group and all attendees will be expected to participate. Ciaran’s workshop is limited to 10 and will take place in the Dargan Suite on Saturday September 13th at 11am. Places can be reserved on the festival website www.ucff.ie

Ciaran Creagh Irish playwright and screenwriter Ciaran Creagh rose to attention in the film industry last year when his screenplay ‘Parked’ was made into a cinema-released feature film starring Colm Meaney (The Snapper) and directed by Darragh Byrne. Picking up numerous awards internationally, ‘Parked’ came after Creagh had three of his plays publicly performed.

Just recently I have just taken up the position of Senior Lecturer in Screenwriting and Media Production at Northumbria University. The Workshop - ' Running the Room' - A Screenwriting Workshop The best TV shows run writer’s rooms. A place where creativity is king, writers are listened to, and no idea, no matter how outlandish, is discarded. Whether you are a new writer, or an experienced writer “Running The Room” is a crash course in creative thinking that can be applied to any screenwriting project, be it a movie, TV series, serial or webseries. This two hour workshop is run by Len Collin an experienced TV and Film writer with experience of running the room. “In this two hour workshop we will go from the blank page to creating something new and original. It’s an accelerated process that is designed to help writers re-engage with their creativity., and interact with each other.” Along the way you’ll learn Len’s approach to story, character and dramatic truth. Just bring your ideas and enthusiasm. Len’s workshop will take place in the Laurel Suite on Saturday September 13th at 2pm. Places can be reserved on the festival website www.ucff.ie

Len Collin I guess I’m best known as a writer, though if you recognise the face it’s either because you saw re-runs of A Touch Of Frost – or you rented out High Heels and Low Lifes. I started out as an actor and I still get in front of the camera on occasion. Mostly however I write and direct film, TV or internet productions. Some of the productions I have written for include The Bill, Ultimate Force, Londons Burning, Thief Takers, Soldier Soldier, Holby City and Eastenders.
